00:00Cody and Moran. Hi Cody. What's up?
00:03Hey, what's up guys? How you doing today man? Happy New Year to you as well
00:08Hey right on so a couple things. Um, I was uh, I'm in for the Jerry Rice caller man
00:14Interesting take um, I don't know about coach, but I never think it's a bad idea to have more champions in the building
00:21No, you gotta have some champions hanging out in the rooms. Cool, man
00:27I don't know. Don't you already feel like like I don't think Jerry Rice is not in the building. Do you know what I mean?
00:33He's there
00:34Yeah, he can go talk to whoever he wants to talk to as far as a more official role. It's just my perception
00:41I don't know if that fits Jerry but but whatever I got no problem with him being around the players
00:48Exactly. Yeah, and then as far as the coaches for players, I didn't hear two names that I really thought I would hear out here
00:54John Madden, right NFL career cut short right really knee injury, but he played but then Don Shuler
01:01Yeah, didn't sure play like a bunch of years of the Redskins or not one year with the Redskins
01:06I think with the Colts and the Browns
01:09But yeah, I know he was a pretty good player. No doubt a greater question was like great players Cody Hall of Fame
01:15Level players because even like Mike Vrabel for example future Patriots coach
01:20It seems was and D'Amico Ryan's wasn't another guy who played
01:24Yeah, like a lot of these guys long way to go there in the league
01:28Sure, I was thinking about Superstar Hall of Fame caliber players who then went on to coach and it's there's not many right
01:36football in football
01:38Joe Torrey, he's a great player, right? Oh, yeah, baseball. You get a lot more. I think great player great manager Pete Rose
01:44Certainly the hit king
01:46Rest in peace. I don't know if he was a great manager. He was good at figuring out what was about to happen
01:51He was a manager. He was a manager great player who managed. Yes, he was
01:56Let's go to let's go to Ray in the city. Hi Ray. What's up?
02:02Ray you there. How you doing? Can you hear me? Yeah, we got you man. I
02:07Sorry about that. No, I just wanted to throw in the mix my dick. How could you guys forget my dick?
02:11Well, we did we we did forget and then we mentioned him later. Yeah, that's probably the best example in the NFL
02:18Yeah, three Super Bowl rings to his credit. Yeah, I think he was a hell of a player in a coach. That's all
02:24Thanks. Thanks, man. Appreciate it. No doubt and an original at that as far as the coaching angle
02:31Let's go to Morgan in Morgan Hill. Hi Morgan. What's going on?
02:36I
02:37Guys, thanks for taking my call. I had two two points. I wanted to make about the 49ers season
02:44first I
02:45Mean, I understand that the sentiment around the season is pretty depressing with a lot of people saying we should kind of tear it down
02:52but this season makes me think about kind of like the Giants San Francisco Giants 105 win season where
02:59Everything went right and at some point in the season, you know the mojo just you know
03:05there's some something happens where the the Sun starts shining down on the team and
03:10pinch hit homers and everybody starts believing and then you know next thing, you know
03:14you got your hundred and five win season and I kind of feel like this season Niners is the opposite of that where at
03:20Some point of the season probably it'd be even before the season with the IU called out a black cloud
03:26Just started to kind of form over the season and the team and I mean we can go on without injuries
03:32Then there was the char various Ward's a young daughter
03:36And then Trent Williams stillborn. I mean just so many things went wrong and at some point
03:44You know, it's almost like a mysterious force happens and there's no denying it and you just all succumb to it
03:50but the point I'm trying to make with that is I think this is a bit of an
03:55Aberration of a season and I think if the Niners keep it, you know
03:58Most of the personnel together that there's another
04:02Playoff run in this team and I don't have too many doubts about that. So that's point number one
04:09I'm number two Brock Purdy
04:12You know kind of an up-and-down season
04:14I'm not as down on him as I think a lot of people are in terms of how he performed this season
04:19I think this was a good year for him to kind of take a certain step in his game in that
04:25He started to take more
04:28You know more deep shots or more air yards
04:31I remember at some point this season he was like leading the league and air yards thrown or something like that
04:37And I think you know when he looks back at this season
04:40He's gonna see that he probably overdid it with that
04:43But he was able to kind of see what that was like and maybe he'll find some more balance moving forward
04:49So even though it was a horrible season all around. I'm still optimistic for next year Morgan
04:54Thanks, I like and I think that's your larger point your reference to the season for the Giants
04:59You actually undercut him a couple of wins is 107 win. Yeah season, but I get I get the comp and
05:06Like I okay was this year the reverse of that in other words everything went right that year everything went wrong this year
05:14Here's the larger point with which I agree
05:17I
05:18Don't think that this year is indicative of anything going forward
05:23I really don't that doesn't mean I'm making a prediction that they'll be awesome next year
05:27It also does not mean that I'm telling you that they don't have some things they need to address
05:32I just think that every team has things that they need to address going into a new season
05:37There are players getting older. There are holes that need to be filled
05:41There's a draft that needs to be conducted free agency contracts and beyond like any other offseason
05:48But the mere idea and I think this is a good discussable thought the idea that this year is
05:56indicative of things to come I
05:58Would say firmly no, it's never that in the NFL. I don't think you can look at any year and
06:05Rightly say going into the next year that what you saw this year is automatically gonna be what you see
06:11next year and the Niner season this year is a good example of it because
06:14He came back with all of the pieces in place that you had from the Super Bowl the year before with the exception of Eric
06:21Armstead right
06:22Offensively you had everybody you had Brock Purdy coming off a Super Bowl appearance in a year healthier
06:28You had Iuke and Deebo you had McCaffrey you thought and then we get to the Jets game
06:34And well McCaffrey's not gonna play and then he didn't play for a couple of months and Iuke then got hurt and everything else
06:40Happened and we all know what happened and it's the reality of football and along the way
06:46You gave away a game against the Rams you gacked a game against, Arizona
06:50You coughed one up against Seattle and next thing
06:53You know
06:54You're sitting in five and five and you're going to Green Bay and Buffalo and now where you should have been probably eight and two
06:59Or seven and three now you're in a difficult spot playing in the difficult portion of your season
07:06So some of it was happenstance. Some of it was just outright off-the-field tragedy
07:12Some of it was self-inflicted
07:14Some of it was the schedule you take all of it together and that's why you wind up six and eleven
07:19but the one thing I will look at for next year, and it makes me think you absolutely should bounce back is
07:26you do bring back the majority of your core guys and
07:30Your schedules and out now Joe gosh, it's unbelievable. It's unbelievable
07:35Percentage of 339 in your 11 non-divisional games. I
07:41Can I can say it like this of?
07:44all NFL teams and the schedule they have next year based on this year's winning percentages
07:53Do you want to know what the 49ers where they rank in terms of schedule?
07:57Ease or difficulty gotta be the easiest number 32. Yeah, it has to be they play
08:04By this year's winning percentages the easiest schedule of any team in the entire
08:11National Football League next year
08:13Tell me that team's not going to the playoffs. They better a team's going to the playoffs or else
08:18Yeah, Super Bowl or bust or or or they'll have to try again
08:22If you look at their 11 non-divisional opponents
08:26They combined this year for 64 wins total the 11 of them
08:29That is less than six wins per team
08:33And if you look at those teams, not a lot of them are trending toward necessarily being great next year
08:38You're listening to 95 7 the game KGM Z FM and HD 1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station always live on the free odyssey
08:44App twitch and YouTube powered by first NorCal Credit Union for a low rate auto loan apply online or just ask for first NorCal
08:50Financing at the dealer. Yeah part of it is is just
08:53Circumstantial luck they're matched up with the AFC South next year. So in the NFC South, so you get Texans
08:59You get Colts you get Jags you get Titans you get the NFC South you get Panthers you get Saints you get Falcons and you?
09:06get Bucks and
09:08In there though the Bucks and Texans
09:10represent the two hardest opponents that you'll have unless you want to also count the Rams and Seahawks who are also 10 and 7 you
09:16Get to do all those division games and then what are the other ones? What are the throw-ins?
09:20They get to play the Bears and the Giants correct, right and then they get to play the Browns. That's it
09:25That's the third one good lord and those teams are a combined 11 and 40 this year
09:31So your three add-ons because you were last place team 5 and 12 3 and 14 and 3 and 14
09:37Yeah, so go ahead and sell your Niner stock do it. I'm buying seriously
09:42I mean if what do you want to offer it to me for I will buy it if you set the
09:47Vegas win total right now at ten and a half next year
09:50Over and it probably won't be much higher than that. No, I don't know it probably might be nine and a half
09:56I don't know about that six and eleven dog
09:59Yeah, but remember how many people are really going deep into it what they need is they want people on both sides of it
10:05You're probably right. It's probably ten and a half. It's probably ten and a half nine and a half is a little soft to me
10:11Yeah, especially when you look at the Sharpies. Oh, no, right
10:15Yeah, don't think about what the Niners have coming back and I was looking at the free agent list again
10:20and
10:21Even if all these free agents go elsewhere, the big losses would be Hargrave. You don't love him
10:27He played 10% of the snaps this year Mooney Ward
10:30Dre Greenlaw
10:32end of list
10:33That's pretty much the list of guys that like I could hit you with
10:37Rakia sin and Ben Bartsch, they're all free agents Patrick Taylor who showed out a little bit yesterday
10:44Okawanu and Jake Tonga, so those are all your throw-ins you get exactly
10:48Yeah
10:49you get new throw in the point is of your core guys the one-name guys if it's Nick and Fred and George and Debo and
10:56Brandon and Christian and Brock and Trent they're all back
11:016 5 0 on the text line would like me to retire the Super Bowl or try again phrase
11:05I would too. Yeah, but I won't yeah, and here's why me a long year
11:09It's not a phrase and I know that it's like it's purposely built to try at least from my
11:17Perspective to get people to sort of rethink the way they approach seasons like this actually went
11:23I'm not gonna say this went the way I thought it would but it is the absolute perfect
11:29Encapsulation of what I'm trying to talk about. It never was Super Bowl or bust
11:33That's just a that's just a fan mentality, which is fine
11:37I don't have any issue with it, but it's not it's not reality
11:42It's not real Super Bowl or bust would mean either this or else off with your head
11:49No, no, everybody's back
11:52quarterbacks gonna get a fancy new contract and you're gonna try again and I and I would
11:59Suggest you take a look at a bunch of the things that happen this year and
12:04realize that every single year is its own entity and
12:09has its own pitfalls and
12:12challenges and all of these things and
12:14You can look at the Niners this year and you can blame them for a lot and then you can also have
12:18compassion for a lot and that's all in there and it's baked into the cake and
12:24When you have achieved what they've achieved whether or whether it's a ring or not
12:28You give that group Super Bowl or try again, but not every year. Yes. No, but this year
12:35I was talking about this year. Well, you are going to not a threatened the people here
12:41No, and you're not gonna threaten the coach and you're not gonna probably threaten the quarterback
12:46Although some people would like the quarterback to be removed
12:49you're gonna look at the next year and you've got guys who underperform this year who are older and
12:56You may have some hard choices to make as you start to allocate your resources and you realize you need of your 22 starters
13:03You probably need
13:05Six of them for sure replaced going into next year. If not more who are the six?
13:10Well, I would say the center and the left guard. Okay, the right tackle. I mean, that's banks, right?
13:17Right. He's a free agent if you resign him, I like banks. I like Aaron Banks. He's alright. Yeah, I mean, he's okay and
13:25Poonie was great. One of only ten Niners to play all 17 games. You're right tackle McKivitt's
13:30You would love to upgrade that and if you draft the tackle, maybe he becomes your right tackle till Trent leaves
13:38Defensively both of your interior defensive linemen
13:41You need another linebacker whether it's Drake Greenlaw comes back. Then you don't you need another corner. You need a corner and
13:48You know, we've reached about and you're starting 22
13:51Yeah, and you know you could look for other upgrades I do think that you might be looking for a deep safety
13:57It feels like who Funga and Mustafa are kind of the same player and you've got two
14:04Essentially, I might be off by a number two. Essentially. You have two of the top 40 players in the draft in theory
14:10You could should be able to get starters right there
14:13If you do it, right, you should be able to get starting players with those two picks depends on what you're looking for
14:19You're probably not gonna get a starting edge rusher and a starting tackle
14:23You'll have to get one of the you could get a starting tackle in the second round. You could it
14:29No, I mean second rounders looking at the mocks. It does look to be a little bit of a deep edge rusher draft
14:35Yeah, I don't know if it's a tackle deep draft
14:37But a lot of times when you look for a starting tackle, it's a guy in the first half of that first draft
