00:00This is what struck me and I wonder how we could you and I can kind of compare and contrast this
00:07Because we did the show together and then off we all head through the parking lot of Levi's Stadium
00:13You went to the press box. Yep. I ended up in some seats and
00:18Therefore that made you drier than me
00:21but what struck me is
00:25The vibe of this fan base right now
00:28It really struck me I
00:31Have now been in the stands twice this year and listen to Brandon. I yuk
00:37get sort of kind of booed and
00:40Listened last night to Debo Samuel
00:43Sort of kind of get booed and I also listened to Kyle Shanahan
00:49essentially get heckled for
00:52the entire night after
00:54Every single play call by one guy behind you. No, it was multiple
00:59There was one who was excessive and sir, if you're listening, you're not that funny
01:05It's not that funny to cuss on every single sentence at the top of your lungs
01:10I'm not a prude my kids weren't there. It's fine. You're not that funny
01:15Anyway, he probably should have been on what's bugging you but I don't spend too much time on that
01:20Kyle Shanahan is getting heckled on the regular and on a night when the 49ers score six points. I
01:28Completely get it. I totally get it
01:30I think we need to be open to all comments and all thoughts and everything on a day like today
01:38but I
01:39Really would love if we can collectively take the temperature of this fan base
01:47because I am struck by
01:50Where we find ourselves
01:52This is a very
01:54Angry place right now. This is a very friend. That's for me
01:59That's the only way that I can put it into words. I am so bummed. I don't get angry at
02:07Sports teams. That's not the word I would use
02:10If you do, that's great. That's fine
02:13But I'm just so bummed
02:16Because this experience I had sort of at least marked down with ballpoint ink
02:21That that something was gonna something something fun something special
02:26Potentially was was on the schedule this year
02:30Yeah, and something fun head has happened
02:33But not when you've needed it to happen and you look at the last five games and they've lost four of those games and you could
02:39Look at every game
02:40Individually Seattle, well, you know Smith drove down and beat you. Well, that's not supposed to happen in Green Bay
02:46You had a backup quarterback fine. You go to Buffalo and it's a blizzard. Okay. It was a scheduled loss
02:51Anyway, they were coming off a bye you beat Chicago big whoop and then you come out and you play the Rams and you get
02:57Greenlaw back and you get Bosa back and your defense is pretty damn nasty for the majority of the game
03:03And I know that the Rams did have a couple of long drives in the second half and the defense was kind of worn down
03:09And Drake Greenlaw wasn't there and Devon Drake Campbell had decided he didn't want to play football anymore
03:15And you had Demetrius Flanagan fouls who was already injured and he had to go out there and play
03:21And so yeah, the defense stood up the defense was great almost all night long
03:26And yet you scored six points and you talk about the fans and the one thing that struck me
03:31Even before Debo got booed is when that game kicked off
03:34It was about 65% full and I don't know where your seats were
03:38but I was up in the press box and looking across at the
03:42Sunny side which turned out to be the rainy side by the second quarter and the majority of that upper deck
03:48was kind of empty which told me that a lot of fans were either turned off by the weather or
03:54Turned off by the fact that this team is six and seven
03:57So probably a lot of both even though fans were
03:59The ones who did show up and shout the faithful who were there and they stayed till the end
04:04Those fans who showed up and you have every right to boo. Whoever you want to boo. You're a paying customer
04:09I get that but what I saw from the crowd was general disinterest even going in
04:15Well the crowd the thing was not even close to sold out
04:18Yeah, I like I am it's hard for me to put a finger on that because I'll give you this example
04:23The United Club last night, I'll look at you just to just mm-hmm the whole time
04:29So like people who were out in the crowd
04:32Yeah
04:32I chose to be in a job and I guess I because it was raining and and and you know for about a quarter
04:38Yeah, um, I mean it was light rain in the first quarter. The second quarter was hard
04:42It was pretty intense and I don't mean intense other than like it rain hard
04:47Yeah, if you're sitting dark if you're just in a chair sitting in it, it was incredibly wet
04:53And so I do think that that a lot of fans made that choice and that's fine. I get that
04:59I'll also say that even inside some of those clubs and underneath overhangs
05:03Um, it was not like the group was intensely screaming at television sets
05:08Totally locked into the game. It might have been much more locked in on
05:13You know big Bud Light or or whatever else they may had in their right or left hand
05:18You know what? I mean? Like it like that's you're not wrong with what you're saying
05:23I don't know where everybody's belief was and and sure they were already in a bad spot before this game started
05:29But I remember the last thing I said to you before we left for this for the game last night
05:33I'm so excited to see what this feels like if they can win tonight and
05:41Really put together a late-season charge and for Kyle Shanahan who's got a reputation of late-season runs
05:50sparkly November in December record
05:52for him to come out there last night and
05:56Have this be the product where we all thought
06:00Season on the brink and what the fans were delivered in that moment were two things
06:08six points and
06:10one of your players who basically
06:14Flipped you off and left
06:16It's stunning
06:18it's
06:19absolutely stunning and
06:22It was a boring game
06:24Very hard to watch and I I really think if there is one thing that Kyle Shanahan
06:31Needs to review so many people want everybody in these situations to review themselves, right?
06:37And I think that's fair if Kyle wants to review himself
06:41He's got to look at that
06:43He has got to look at the effectiveness of his team in the second half
06:49When it when it calls for points
06:52You can't just get your 10-point lead in the first half every time and then pound people into submission and win the game
07:00That's it's been very effective. You've been very good
07:03I'll be the first one obviously always have been to point that out. I don't want Kyle fired
07:09I don't want that we don't need to go there
07:11But I think there's a fair conversation to happen about whether or not in
07:172024 with all rules set for quarterbacks and passing game if you can be effective
07:22When when you're down by three in the fourth quarter, it usually feels like you're down by ten
07:27I can honestly say they're not built for this. Yeah, what it feels like
07:31It's the way it is and look at the two different offenses and look at what Kyle does
07:36Throughout the entirety of the game and all you have to do is look at their formations and it's bunch formations
07:41It's everyone tied to the line of scrimmage and they try to do everything off of that
07:46And then you look at the Rams on their 17 play drive
07:48Where they took the lead and they slowly but surely went down the field. Everything is spread out wide
07:54They're either going empty or they're going 11 personnel with the tight end and the one running back and the three wide receivers a lot
08:01of times they went to four wide receivers and they spread the defense out and they let the quarterback go out there and
08:06Make plays and make choices and kind of pick the defensive part and that's not what Shanahan does
08:13Schematically as an offense. What's the emotion? What's the emotion you're feeling?
08:17Like it's not up. It's frustration and emotion. Sure. Absolutely. That is the biggest emotion is frustration
08:24Okay, it's not just about one thing
08:26I'm frustrated by Shanahan and his play calling and you go back to the first half where it's third and six and you are
08:33Across the 50 and you go to
08:3621 personnel with Debo Samuel as you're running back third and six and you give him the ball
08:42You run the ball on third and six and he goes nowhere and now you're gonna go ahead and kick a long field goal
08:47Moody made it great
08:48but that is not a very aggressive play the fact that he continues to try to run Debo Samuel as a running back is a
08:56failed
08:57Scenario it continues to fail. When was the last time Debo as a running back broke off a big run?
09:03I'd have to go back through all my notes
09:07It doesn't work and so he can you continues to try to do the same thing over and over and over again
09:14Did you feel like cuz I heard this from a lot of people
09:17Did you feel like they were force-feeding Debo Samuel especially early in the game?
09:22I don't feel that way and our show thread had that as an idea and
09:26Grandy and Lucas both thought that and I watched the game again this morning and the first play from scrimmage was a play-action
09:32They went to Debo. It was incomplete
09:34Yeah
09:34and as I mentioned on that third and six they brought Debo in as a running back and they handed it to him and he
09:40Got two yards and it didn't work. I don't think that they quote force fed him
09:44But my issue in the frustration was more with Brock Purdy where there were a lot of plays that weren't designed for
09:51Certain players, but he went there. Anyway, he was forcing balls
09:55Unnecessarily when the check down was available. Well, I think when a quarterback starts forcing things
10:01I mean we could psychoanalyze but I would argue
10:04I've always likened it to the and you know this the way that I play Madden when you're force-feeding it
10:10Right, and it's big and it is in some way
10:13baked in fear
10:15Like in other words if you're not trusting and he didn't he did not have a clean pocket last night
10:21If you're not trusting that you're gonna have time to go through your progressions, then I think you're vulnerable to sort of
10:29Make a decision early about where you're gonna go with the ball
10:31And and that's when you force something and I saw that especially with his deep throws last night. The one to Jennings is just
10:40Whoo, that's mind-boggling
10:42That's mind-boggling lack of awareness to throw that football. He was never open, right?
10:48He was never open for a moment and you were in field goal range wall down by three
10:53That's the drive that Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy rarely pull off and the truth of the matter is
11:00They were pulling it off. They were in the process. They had converted a few third downs
11:06Ricky Pearsall was allowed to touch the ball. It was crazy once
11:11They were moving the ball and that throw is exactly I would argue what Brock Purdy
11:17Has made his reputation for not doing exactly and it ended their season
11:24That's just wild to me. So I I think that like let's play with this for a little while
11:30Miner fans. What are you feeling? I
11:34Was so struck by the the vibe in the stands last night
11:38It's very very struck by it and that's the best. It's not a great word
11:42So when I come up with I'm just so bummed. I'm so bummed that this
11:47Is the season we got
