00:00On the impact of S&P Outlook on the business sector of the country, we will discuss it with Sir Joey Concepcion,
00:09GoNegosyo founder and private sector lead for jobs.
00:14Sir Joey, good afternoon to you.
00:17Good afternoon.
00:20To understand the effect of S&P Credit Rating on the business and private sector, what is it?
00:34Well, of course, the rating of the Philippines is also important.
00:40It gives somehow that the country is doing well if it has a good rating.
00:48I think under the administration of President Marcos, things have been doing much, much better.
00:59I can see it for myself. I'm in the front line and helping MSMEs.
01:05That's the first thing we're doing. This sector is very important.
01:11If this sector is not going to do well, the growth of our country will not move higher.
01:21We have to have what I call an inclusive growth economy.
01:26How do you think the business sector improvements and tax reforms in the rating of S&P in the Philippines helped?
01:37Well, I think all of the incentives that the government has given, it's helping definitely big business.
01:49It's also moving down to the medium-sized businesses.
01:55I think the support of the government of all of these tax incentives will definitely help.
02:04But I think more than that, it's really pushing for a very inclusive economy.
02:13And because of digitalization, many MSMEs are able to become content creators and influencers.
02:29Social media has really changed the game for breaking the barriers.
02:34Before, only big corporations are able to advertise.
02:39But the small ones, they cannot promote their product. They don't have access.
02:43But with social media, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc., the world has really changed.
02:51And so, our MSMEs are happy because they have a new avenue of promoting themselves or promoting their products or services.
03:04The only thing missing here is we really have to upskill our people.
03:09That is very important.
03:11If they want to become a successful entrepreneur, we always suggest take employment first, improve your skill, define your talent,
03:19and eventually, down the road, you can start a business.
03:23So, that's more or less our model.
03:26What we do is we go out and do business.
03:30And we have DTI here.
03:32In almost all provinces, we're hitting the grassroots.
03:36That's what's really hard here in doing business.
03:40And almost 100 to 150 mentors come with us.
03:45We set up either in SM Malls or Robinson Malls or Ayala Malls.
03:50And that's all every week.
03:52So, this coming December, the first week of December, we have our Balikbayan Summit.
03:57This is one of the biggest events.
03:59Close to 5,000 have registered in Balikbayan.
04:03So, we want our OMWs.
04:05We supply a lot of workers overseas.
04:08Yes, there are sacrifices in their families, but at least it helps with their children's tuition fees.
04:16And they are able to have some capital to start a business so that eventually, when they retire here in our country,
04:24they will have enough money to sustain themselves.
04:29So, I think this is the way forward.
04:33DTI is a very strong partner of GoNegosyo.
04:36So, the private sector, the mentors, the top entrepreneurs,
04:41and we have the regional directors of DTI,
04:45including Secretary Chris Rocket.
04:49I think this partnership is the right formula so that we're able to reach every Filipino out there.
04:58And that was my goal for the last 19 years, to really help our MSMEs.
05:03At least, if we have negotiators that are doing well, of course, our economy will start to grow.
05:11It's not just corporations like ourselves that should grow.
05:16We really have to scale up our MSMEs so that they can become medium and large,
05:21and eventually, people like our companies.
05:25So, I've seen it.
05:26Many of them, I can see that they're moving up.
05:29So, basically, what we do, we provide mentors, we provide access to funding,
05:33and we provide access to market, which we're teaching them now to learn social media,
05:38learn the platforms that you should be in,
05:40and we're teaching them how to become influencers and content creators.
05:44So, this is the upcoming Balikbaya Summit, Sir Joey.
05:49You're encouraging our OFWs, the big earners in the country,
05:55to eventually invest in our country and maybe start their own business
05:59so that they don't have to live in another country forever.
06:04Yes.
06:05And come back.
06:06Because they have to have a roadmap.
06:10Eventually, these people, either some of them will be lucky enough to,
06:15if they're working in Europe or the United States,
06:18they may have the chance to become citizens, may have the chance.
06:21But many of them here in the Middle East countries, of course, that's not accessible.
06:27So, many of them are, of course, getting much better pay.
06:32Because now, the dollar is strong.
06:35So, people are saying, the dollar is strong.
06:38Yes, for us who live here, that is negative.
06:41But for the OFWs who are working overseas, that is positive.
06:46So, that will help them.
06:49Of course, we don't want our Philippine peso to depreciate.
06:53But, of course, when the peso depreciates, it also makes us more competitive.
06:57But, again, it has to be a balance.
07:00So, I am really, really passionate in really helping our OFWs.
07:06Eventually, we'll eventually retire in the Philippines.
07:09And we want them, after sacrificing being away from their family,
07:14to have the chance to provide for their family a better life.
07:17And that is sustainable.
07:19If they come back, they can be employed or they can at least start a business.
07:24But, most of them, if they really took care of their money,
07:29they will have enough to provide for starting a business.
07:32And this is where we're trying to help them.
07:34We will be very careful.
07:36Those who have no skill or who don't know what to do should not even start a business.
07:43Okay.
07:44Sir Joey, these are the political talks of the past few days.
07:49Even though this is an internal issue, how do you think this is also affecting our economy, our businesses?
07:56Well, unfortunately, of course, you have this situation now.
07:59But, I think, regardless of that, we should remain focused on our economy.
08:04I think all of these things will eventually pass.
08:08And what's important is that this Christmas season, we have to celebrate.
08:16Celebrating Christmas in a happy environment generates more spending.
08:23So, the more that people will spend to buy gifts, to have parties, that helps a lot in increasing the economy.
08:32As of this point in time, our company is in the ice cream, the pasta, and all of that.
08:36At this point in time, what we see is we're running out of stock.
08:39So, this is one of the best holiday seasons that we see that the demand is quite high.
08:45It's unusual that we produce enough for the next three months.
08:50But, you can see the surge in people wanting to celebrate.
08:54So, that's a good sign.
08:56And last question, Sir Joey.
08:58How do you think we can sustain or upgrade the credit rating outlook of the Philippines?
09:06I think the President is doing a great job.
09:11He has got the government to partner with the private sector.
09:16I am part of the Private Sector Advisory Council on Jobs together with Fred Ayala.
09:21And there are different sectors, the health sector, infrastructure, and all of that.
09:24So, all sectors of the Private Sector Advisory Council is advising the President.
09:29We are also doing our own thing.
09:31In my case, we are upskilling our people to have more jobs.
09:35And we're creating more negotiators to put up their own negotiations.
09:39So, each sector is doing what they think they should do to make the lives of our people more comfortable, more progressive.
09:49Then again, what I'm trying to say is that what is important is that the economy should grow.
09:56Okay, it's very important that the economy should grow.
10:00But, what we have to see is that the people at the bottom of the pyramid are able to really prosper much more.
10:09Because that bottom of the pyramid is where a lot of people are having a hard time.
10:16And the private sector, big business, is now realizing that together with government, we definitely can make a great impact.
10:25And I can see it happen.
10:27So, this administration is really pro making this country more inclusive.
10:34Thank you very much for your time, Sir Joey Concepcion, Go Negosyo founder and private sector lead for jobs.
