00:13agenda that included the definition of strategies to help face the challenges of current geopolitics,
00:19climate crisis and the unilateral coercive measures.
00:27And the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly continues
00:32as world leaders discuss world challenges.
00:39In Lebanon, death toll from Israeli attacks rose to 72 in less than 24 hours.
00:55Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:57My name is Belén de los Santos.
00:58I'm from Telesfor Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:01We'll begin with the news.
01:02The Political Council of the ALBA-TCP met this Thursday at the United Nations with an
01:07agenda that included the definition of strategies to help face the challenges of current geopolitics,
01:13climate crisis and unilateral coercive measures.
01:16This way, leaders of member countries agreed that the meeting served as a new opportunity
01:20to analyze the achievements reached by the integrationist bloc.
01:26In this context, the Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Ivan Gil, stressed that the country remains
01:31undefeated in defending its right to build a new social order to live in peace and stability.
01:38In addition, Foreign Minister Gil also denounced the imperialist onslaught faced today by the
01:43nations of the regional bloc and highlighted the United's response to the unilateral
01:49coercive measures imposed against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
01:59The implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the United response to the unilateral coercive
02:05measures imposed against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are a testimony to our determination
02:11to confront and overcome these obstacles.
02:13We are not content to resist.
02:15We are building, with strategic vision, a new stage of cooperation that will allow us
02:20to advance in economic, agricultural and financial development.
02:24The creation of the ALBA-TCP Development Cooperation Agency will allow us to carry out a multilateral
02:30offensive to allocate resources for integral development projects in our countries, hand-in-hand
02:35with Petrocaribe but also with extra-regional allied countries.
02:45And at the United Nations Headquarters, the third day of the 79th session of the UN General
02:58Assembly is underway.
03:00We've been closely following the speeches made today by the representatives and heads
03:04of state of Palestine and Sudan, among others.
03:07To bring us the latest on this and the highlights from this day, our special envoy Jorge Gestoso
03:12from New York.
03:17In this third day of the general debate here at the United Nations, this morning we heard
03:24the presentation of the President of the Authority of Palestine, we're talking about Mr. Mahmoud
03:31Abbas.
03:32He put emphasis that he was not here to respond to the lies, as he mentioned in that term,
03:40and has been doing and saying, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, about
03:45the situation.
03:46He said that definitely he's asking the international community to stop right away, immediately
03:54he says, the crimes, and then he go even further, the genocide that is being victim, the people
04:03of Palestine.
04:04He said that 70% of Gaza has been destroyed.
04:09He's asking, for example, the United States and international community to stop sending
04:16arms and weapons to Israel.
04:20He's asking the release, and it's pretty interesting that he's asking the release of both sides,
04:26for both sides of the prisoners, of the Palestinian side and also of the Israeli side, according
04:35to his words and terms, 7,000 prisoners in the hands of Israel.
04:43He's asking a full stop, he's asking the beginning of the authority in terms of helping the humanitarian
04:54aid that is needed desperately.
04:56He said there's nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing in Gaza and definitely they need the
05:04support of the international community.
05:07As we were coming on the air, we were hearing the beginning of the speech of the transitional
05:13president of Haiti, and curiously, he mentioned the issue of the Haitians living in Springfield
05:22in the United States, that it says that he saluted and congratulated that community because
05:29of his trajectory of being perfect, enviable citizens in that country, opposite of what
05:38has been used by the candidate Donald Trump, the presidential candidate, that he tried
05:45to criticize the Haitian community, saying that the Haitian community on that town is
05:54eating cats and dogs.
05:56So he said, definitely we do not accept that our community of Haiti in the United States
06:04has a perfect record, is being used in the political campaign.
06:09And definitely he said that there is a situation in Haiti that is very, very delicate, as you
06:14know, that it has been sent 1,000 policemen from Kenya to try to restore security, a country
06:23that is, at least in its capital Port-au-Prince, is being managed or ruled almost in a big
06:31percentage of gangs.
06:34So in the rest of the morning, we expect the president of Uruguay to take his turn.
06:40In the afternoon, we expect the representatives of Costa Rica and Peru also having turns in
06:48this third day of the general debate.
06:53We get back to you now.

07:23Welcome back from the South.
07:28In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro affirmed that the country is a part of a new world
07:32geopolitics and condemned the destabilization attempts of the global far-right against the
07:38nation.
07:39In an exclusive interview on our multi-platform Telesur, the president pointed out that Venezuela,
07:44together with countries such as China, Iran, and India, are forming a new defense bloc
07:50against the hegemonic colonialist nations.
07:53In this sense, the Venezuelan head of state considered that together with the BRICS and
07:57the efforts of the people, the Bolivarian Republic will achieve a historic victory against
08:02the fascism of the global far-right.
08:05The president assured that Venezuela is being an example to the world of an admirable nation
08:10that fights in favor of the people, despite the multiple threats and obstacles imposed
08:15by Western nations.
08:20We are building the new world's geopolitics.
08:27We are part.
08:28We've been protagonists for many years of the new world's geopolitics.
08:32Modestly, we can say from Venezuela, the land of the liberators, not by chance.
08:40Here arose Francisco de Miranda, Simón Bolívar, Antonio José de Sucre, a generation of virtues,
08:48Simón Rodríguez, Andrés Bello, Josefa Joaquín Sánchez, Luisa Cáceres de Arizmendi,
08:56born on a day like today, Rafael Urdaneta, among so many, let's say, leaders and top
09:03leaders of the world.
09:06Venezuela today is a world's reference in the political, moral, and spiritual spheres,
09:13because we are in the center of a huge battle.
09:17And Venezuela is the object of great admiration in the whole world, because we have known
09:24how to fight this battle, and we have known how to obtain great victories in spite of
09:30being a besieged, persecuted, threatened, unblockaded country.
09:38President Nicolás Maduro affirmed that, from the Casa de Nariño in Colombia, attacks
09:43with the Pegasus system against Venezuela were conceived in order to harm the country.
09:49The Nariño Palace was a machine of crime, a murder, an espionage.
09:57So we have been victims.
10:00Today I've seen the scandal in Colombia about the Pegasus system.
10:06Many of the things I've read are true.
10:09And Colombia, Venezuela, we are all asking ourselves, in whose hands is this espionage
10:16system?
10:18What is it being used for now?
10:20I do know.
10:21It is being used to try to overthrow President Petro simultaneously, and try at the same
10:28time to harm us in Venezuela.
10:33And we now move on to other topics.
10:34In Lebanon, death toll from the Israeli attacks rose to 72 in the last 24 hours.
10:41The death toll in Lebanon since last October 8th has reached 1,247, and the number of wounded
10:49has reached 5,278.
10:53Lebanon's Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday that the death toll from Israel's
10:57bombardment of southern and eastern Lebanon has risen to 72, while the number of wounded
11:02has reached 392.
11:05Israel began massive attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday morning, believed
11:10to be the most violent, widespread and intense since the fight it began nearly a year ago
11:16and since the 2006 war.
11:23And Japan's campaign for the election of a new prime minister comes to a conclusion on
11:27Thursday as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party finalizes details for the election of
11:32the party's new leader, who will assume the charge of prime minister.
11:37The Liberal Democratic Party primaries are scheduled for September 27th, when its members
11:43and parliamentarians vote to elect the new president of the organization, who will replace
11:49Fumio Kishida, the current leader.
11:51Kishida announced on August 14th that he would retire from office, motivated by the
11:57need for a change in the party after being immersed in political financial scandals and
12:02an economic crisis that caused increasing increases in the costs of living and worries
12:08in the Japanese people.
12:15And also in Japan, Iwao Hakamada, the longest serving man on death row, was acquitted by
12:22a court on Thursday after spending 47 of his 88 years in prison.
12:28Hakamada, a former professional boxer, was imprisoned in 1966 and two years later was
12:34sentenced to death for the murder of the owner of the fermented soybean factory where he
12:40worked and the owner's family.
12:43A new investigation in 2014 showed that the DNA found on the bloody garments did not match
12:49Hakamada's.
12:50The Japanese citizen was released to await a retrial.
12:55By the time the case was reopened, Hakamada had already entered the Guinness Book of Records
13:00for being the man who spent the longest time on death row.
13:09The ruling was what we expected and should be given.
13:13It's been a very long fight.
13:16Our next action is to demand that prosecutors not appeal.
13:25Hakamada was not treated with dignity for half a century, so that is why I am here to
13:30support him with this real, innocent verdict.
13:35I hope he will spend the rest of his life with dignity.
13:39And we have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our YouTube

14:05Welcome back from the south.
14:29In Cuba, authorities in the province of Pinar del Rio reported significant damage to electric
14:34service and agricultural after the passage of Hurricane Elaine.
14:38The main damages were concentrated in the municipalities of Mantua, Guayna and Sandino,
14:43where damage to vegetable and tobacco crops were also reported.
14:47Brigades from three Cuban provinces are expected to arrive on Thursday morning to support the
14:51repair of the affected infrastructure.
14:54Due to weather conditions, about 800 people are expected to return to their homes starting
14:59next Monday.
15:05And in Mexico, the National Meteorological Service reported this September 25th that
15:10Hurricane Elaine, Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, remains near the northern coast of
15:17the state of Quintana Roo in the Mexican Caribbean, and in the next few hours will intensify to
15:23a Category 2 as it moves away from the territory.
15:27In its most recent report, the National Meteorological Service informed that Elaine's cloud bands
15:32originate in tents to occasional torrential rains, strong wind gusts and high waves in
15:38the Yucatan Peninsula.
15:39The municipality of Benito Juarez is so far the most affected by this impact, with reports
15:44of heavy flooding in the city and hotel zone, downed trees, flight cancellations, as well
15:50as problems with the electric power supply.
15:53For now, we can confirm that Isla Mujeres, Benito Juarez, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel and
16:02Lázaro Cárdenas are under rail alert.
16:05Maximum danger.
16:06Everyone at home without moving.
16:08Everyone at home.
16:09No moving.
16:11And meanwhile, in Argentina, residents of CĂłrdoba affected by the fires protest while
16:16Millet flies over the area to assess the damage.
16:20Local residents protested against the government's management of the fires that have devastated
16:26the central region of the country while President Javier Millet flew over the area on helicopter
16:31to assess the damage, but did not make any public statement or approach the firefighters.
16:37More than 200 firefighters are working with the support of Hedron Plains to extinguish
16:43the main outbreak located near Capilla del Monte, 100 kilometers north of the provincial
16:49capital of CĂłrdoba.
16:51According to records, in the last six days, more than 52,000 hectares of vegetation were
16:57burned.
16:58Authorities maintain the extreme fire risk alert throughout the province.
17:02I'm here today to support the local people because the way this fire has been handled
17:12is terrible, incredibly unprofessional.
17:15People have lost their homes, their livelihoods.
17:19It's not good enough.
17:20The response is not good enough.
17:22I'm here to make some noise and support my local community.
17:30The reality is devastating.
17:33The fire has destroyed everything.
17:36I have never seen such devastation, despite the amount of fire this place has suffered.
17:44The economic and environmental losses are enormous.
17:48We have dead animals.
17:50We don't know the exact number.
17:53And like this, we've come to the end of this newspaper.
