00:00In Venezuela, it will host the 24th Summit of Heads of States and Governments of Al-Batistipi.
00:18In Palestine, Israeli strikes killed dozens of Palestinians and injured several others
00:23in the Gaza Strip.
00:27In Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, a ferocious fire destroyed around 100 small
00:31stores in the Las Americas market.
00:38Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:43Cuba.
00:44We begin with the news.
00:56The Bolivarian Alliance for the People's of America People's Trade Treaty, Al-Batistipi,
01:00a by-product of the political will and the integrationist vocation of Commander-in-Chief
01:04Castro and Hugo Chavez, turns 20 years old on December 14.
01:08In these current times, when renewing the flag is more necessary than ever, it is paramount
01:13to know its origin.
01:14Let's see in the following word.
01:37Next morning, at the Simón Bolívar House Museum, Fidel Castro sits in the front row
01:41to listen to Chavez's keynote address on the emancipated project of the Liberator,
01:46adding how it could be realized in the new times.
01:49Later, in the Great Hall of the University of Havana, Chavez attached importance to integrating
01:54Latin America and the Caribbean as a single nation.
01:57The century that is coming for us is a century of hope.
02:01It is our century.
02:02It is a century of the resurrection, of the Bolivarian dream, of Martí's dream, of the
02:09Latin American dream.
02:13Ten years later, on December 14, 2004, the two commanders founded ALBA, the Bolivarian
02:18Alliance for the Peoples of America, an integrationist, historical and unprecedented organization
02:24which changed the history of Latin America and the Caribbean.
02:29An integration mechanism grounded in new principles of solidarity, reciprocity, respect for asymmetries
02:36and differences in our economies and societies, respect for the sovereignty of our people
02:42and for integration of Bolivar and Martí styles.
02:48The scenario was difficult by that time.
02:50In 2005, Mar del Plata was under the world spotlight.
02:53The memories of the historical Fourth Summit of the Americas live on many.
02:58There, Chavez spoke loud and clear.
03:01Free trade won't sort out our problems of employment, poverty or misery.
03:06Those who still believe that story forget about it.
03:10The conclusion of the summit was the rejection of the bloc of South American countries belonging
03:15to the FTAA, the free trade area of the Americas boosted by the United States.
03:27Concurrently, Chavez overshadowed the FTAA by charismatically hosting the counter-summit
03:32that is the third Albatizipi edition, generating a positive buzz among the 40,000 participants.
03:45Since here, in Mar del Plata, it is the tomb of the FTAA.
03:54The tomb of the FTAA.
04:03Let's say it.
04:05Let's say it.
04:07FTAA, get stuffed.
04:13FTAA, get stuffed.
04:1820 years later, millions of Latin Americans and Caribbeans have benefited from Alba's programs
04:23of Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua.
04:2620 years later, millions of Latin Americans and Caribbeans have benefited from Alba's programs
04:31of Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have been declared illiteracy-free territories.
04:36A miracle mission has restored sight to millions of people free of charge.
04:40And thousands of youngsters in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa have been trained as doctors.
04:48Many presidents have passed by here in Venezuela, but there have never been such commitments to other countries.
04:54Fortunately, Chavez's side-by-side Fidel Castro made it happen.
04:58Chavez was able to provide free eye surgeries for us with eye diseases.
05:02No government had done such good action before in Venezuela.
05:11And in my community, there is a lot of poverty.
05:14Reality surpasses my expectations what I thought before arriving.
05:18I learned not only to be a doctor, but also to be a poet, to be cultured.
05:22I feel that I am different from what I was since I came here.
05:25The Cuban teaching doctrine is very deep, very humanistic,
05:28which is what is missing in our Latin American countries.
05:36We are really grateful to the president of Cuba, Fidel Castro.
05:40So on behalf of all the people of Olentepec, I would like to thank you for all that you have helped us out.
05:47And we hope that you will continue providing your help for us to be able to survive.
05:52Today, the right wing is trying to revive the neoliberal agenda.
05:56The challenge is not easy. Chavez and Fidel warned us of it.
06:00Our independence is now or never, and Alba is that independence.
06:11In Cuba, we say homeland or death.
06:18Here I dare to say Latin America united and justice or death.
06:22But there will be no death. We will be ever onward to victory.
06:33In the framework of the Bloc's 24th Albatizibi Summit, let's now learn more about Venezuela,
06:38one of its member countries and host of the event.
06:42Located on the northern coast of South America, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela occupies a total of 916,445 km2
06:52and has a population of 32,778,230 people, living among its 23 states and a capital district, Caracas,
07:02which is also the country's most densely populated city.
07:05The Republic of Venezuela was born on July 5, 1811, the signing of the independence from Spain,
07:11obtained after the Patriot Army led by the liberator Simón Bolívar
07:15defeated the royalist forces thus freeing the nation from the colonial hold.
07:19Despite numerous idiosyncratic measures imposed by the United States,
07:22Venezuela currently has a diversified economy that boasts small and medium-sized local companies.
07:28Its largest export product is oil.
07:31The head of state of the Bolivarian Republic is President Nicolás Maduro,
07:35from the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.
07:37The nation is one of the founding Alba members, with Commander Hugo Chávez
07:40coordinating the Bloc together with Cuba's Fidel Castro on December 14, 2004.
07:45Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba is one of the 13 countries of the world
07:50in the world's membership of the United Nations,
07:53and has been a member of the Federal Republic of Venezuela since 2007.
07:57The Republic of Cuba is one of the 13 countries in the world to be included in the UN Security Council.
08:03The Republic of Cuba is one of the 13 countries in the world to be included in the UN Security Council.
08:10Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, is one of 13 countries that make up insular America.
08:18Cuba is a total area of 190,884 square kilometers and has a population of 11,193,470 people
08:27living throughout its 15 provinces and one special municipality.
08:32Capital of the country is Havana, which is also its most populated city.
08:36The Cuban War of Independence against Spain began in 1868, initiated by Carlos Manuel
08:41de Céspedes after freeing his slaves.
08:44In 1898, the Treaty of Paris was signed between Spain and the United States, under which the
08:49U.S. received absolute control of Cuba.
08:51Then, on January 1st, 1949, dictator Fulgencio Batista was defeated by the rebel forces commanded
08:57by Fidel Castro.
08:59For more than six decades, Cuba has been subject to an economic embargo imposed by the United
09:04States, which has had a significant impact on the country's economy.
09:08This action has limited Cuba's access to international markets and has hindered its
09:13ability to engage in financial and commercial transactions with other countries.
09:17Despite the Cuban government's efforts to diversify its economy, the embargo remains
09:21a significant obstacle to the country's economic growth.
09:25The country and its government maintain close ties of friendship with Venezuela and its
09:29people.
09:30This friendship allowed commanders Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro to found El Bautista Peak
09:35on December 14th, 2004, the dream of a united Latin America.
09:45We now have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on Tiktok at Telescoop
09:49English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
09:54We'll be right back, stay with us.
10:31Welcome back.
10:32In Palestine, Israelis strike killed dozens of Palestinians and injured several others
10:36in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
10:38Bafa News Agency reported that four citizens of the Sadala family were killed after the
10:43occupation shelled their house in Jabalia town, north of the Palestinian enclave.
10:47In addition, civilians were injured in an attack on the Jaffa School, northeast of Gaza
10:52City.
10:53After 14 months of siege that has left much of the enclave destroyed and uninhabitable,
10:59thousands of Gazans are taking refuge in schools that are still standing.
11:03At least 44,875 people have been killed and more than 106,000 wounded in Gaza since Israel
11:10began its genocide in October 2023.
11:18And in South Korea, the National Assembly approved on Saturday a motion to impeach President
11:23Jun Suk-kyo over his martial law order.
11:26South Korea's news agency reported that the motion presented by the opposition received
11:32204 votes in favor, 85 against, plus three abstentions and eight invalid ballots.
11:38President Jun will be suspended from his duties while the Asian country's constitutional court
11:43makes the final decision.
11:44Meanwhile, Prime Minister Han Duk-soo will lead the country.
11:48It's the second time that the National Assembly has held a vote on the impeachment motion
11:52against Jun for his short-lived introduction of martial law on December 3rd.
11:56In this context, thousands of people have gathered to demand the President's impeachment
12:00outside the National Assembly.
12:22We go now live to Caracas as President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro is receiving all
12:32the different heads of states of governments that have gathered here in that city in Caracas
12:36for the 24th Summit of ALBA-TCP Heads of States and Governments.
12:41We're seeing live images as President Nicolás Maduro welcomes all the different high-level
12:48authorities and heads of states and governments that have gathered here in Caracas on the
12:55occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of America.
13:16We continue to see images in Caracas as President Nicolás Maduro, as we were saying, continues
13:23to welcome different authorities that have come here, that have come there to the venue
13:30in Caracas where the 24th Summit of ALBA-TCP Heads of States and Governments is going to
13:34start very shortly in just a couple, in just a few minutes.
13:39The heads of states will have first a private meeting among themselves.
13:44They will discuss different topics, especially also the issues that are going to be proposed
13:50by, that are going to be proposed, that were proposed yesterday, Friday, that the social
13:56movements of the alliance also hold their own council meeting.
14:01And this is how it works.
14:02The people are a strong part of the whole process.
14:07It's not a group that is only the ruling class, the ones that have disabled have a
14:13deep touch with the social movements which are a centerpiece of the ALBA-TCP and they
14:19can bring their concerns, their propositions and what's going on directly to the authorities
14:27that they can have a rich exchange in order to together find the alternative and the proposals
14:35to be able to overcome all different obstacles and challenges.
14:41So we are having live images in Caracas as the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro,
14:48continues to receive all the different authorities that have gathered here for this 24th ALBA-TCP
14:56Summit in a special occasion today as is the 20th anniversary.
15:00Twenty years ago, December 14, 2004, is when the then president of Cuba, Fidel Castro,
15:07the other one of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, in a historical hug as has been described
15:12in many occasions, gave way to this paramount integrationist mechanism that has the main
15:19objective of bringing prosperity for the whole region and to ensure the true development
15:25of the peoples of the region, of its member states, in taking into account the key sector
15:31that is the people, the social movement, the core, the grassroots of the citizens
15:36of the different nations to hear what they need, to see what the problems are and to
15:41find ways that together they can move forward.
15:44This, we must remember that it came in contrast, it came in contrast to face the free trade
15:52agreements that were being promoted back in the days with, by the United States through
15:59the region, Hugo Chávez pretty much denied this because he refused to sign these agreements
16:04because he saw in them that it was not in the best interest for the region, it was very
16:11detrimental for the development of the nations of the region and that's when this idea of
16:16a new done, how we call it, back in the days, because alba in Spanish means done.
16:45So we continue watching live images in Caracas as the president of Venezuela continues to
16:51receive all the different authorities that have joined here for, as we were saying, this
16:57important summit.
16:58The free trade area of the Americas is a project that ALBA came in response to as it was seen
17:04as a failure and that it would not help the nations of the region to be able to develop
17:11and prosper, especially in equal conditions for the self-determination, sovereignty of
17:16the people.
17:17Now, over these two decades, the alliance, so far over these two decades of life, it
17:23has promoted regional integration and strengthened ties of friendship and cooperation among its
17:29member states and with this meeting, with this upcoming summit, what the alliance seeks
17:36is to continue consolidating its role as a reference point in Latin America and Caribbean
17:42integration.
17:43It's also a way, a path to continue reaffirming the commitments to the sustainable developments
17:53and solidarity amongst its members.
18:01As we were saying, the progressive social movements, they gathered yesterday, Friday,
18:08to see what could be done as they were marking the 20th anniversary of the Bolivarian Alliance
18:15of the Peoples of America People's Trade Treaty.
18:17During this session, the Council of Social Movement discussed actions, discussed actions
18:28to broaden international solidarity with the peoples of Venezuela, Cuba, and Haiti.
18:40Now, in this alliance, this is a space where solidarity prevails over profit, as has been
18:53one of the core tenets of the alliance, that the idea is not to make the most profit, the
18:59most money, but the idea is to be able to develop hand-in-hand together all the member
19:04states of the region, taking advantage of the strength and facing the weakness of the
19:12other states, so in a way they can come and join in complementarity so that one is not
19:19left behind.
19:21So through solidarity, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of America has solidified
19:26cooperation projects in key areas, such as education, health, and the economy, while
19:34strengthening commitments to regional integration and multilateralism as a path forward towards
19:40the future, and as the only real possible way for the region to be truly independent
19:48again.
19:49As was said recently during the meeting of the Council of Social Movement, the Executive
19:55Secretary of Alba de Cepillo, Ariasa, that the true independence of the countries of
20:02the region is when in the near future, hopefully, he said, the great homeland of Latin American
20:09Caribbean is finally created.
20:16So two decades after its creation, Alba de Cepillo has achieved numerous milestones
20:21stemming from solidarity among nations going beyond mere commercial ties.
20:27The Alliance remains today a transformative project for Latin American Caribbean and has
20:34set short, medium, and long-term goals for the complete development of its member states
20:42and the sustainability in the development of all the nations of the region.
20:50Among its most notable initiatives is the declaration of Venezuela, Bolivia, and Nicaragua
20:57as territories free of illiteracy, a goal achieved through educational programs like
21:04the Yes I Can method, which transformed the lives of millions of people by enabling them
21:10access to written information.
21:12Similarly, the Miracle Mission, a humanitarian project that was born following the idea of
21:21Commander of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, whose humanitarian project aimed at providing
21:27free surgeries for individuals with various eye conditions.
21:32So far today, over five million patients have recovered their sight.
21:38All these operations being done free of charge, prioritizing, of course, those from low-income
21:44backgrounds who lack access to eye doctors.
21:51We continue to see live the images in Caracas as President Nicolás Maduro continues to
21:55welcome the heads of states of government, in this case, Ralph Gonsalve, the Prime Minister
22:00of San Vincente and the Grenadines, as people continue to arrive here at this venue where
22:07they will have the meeting.
22:09First, they will have a closed-door meeting among themselves.
22:12Later on, they will walk the grounds, they will see an exposition about the 20th anniversary,
22:17the achievements that have been achieved during these 20 years of ALBA-TCP, and then they
22:22will have the photo op for the event, and a few moments later is when they will gather
22:28and each of these authorities that are gathered here, all the heads of states of government
22:33and representatives of different nations, including Haiti and Palestine, that even
22:38though they are non-member states of the ALBA-TCP, they are long-standing invited guests to this
22:46kind of meeting because also ALBA seeks to find solidarity with these nations, with these
22:52peoples in order to be able to confront them, and Haiti and Palestine are also going to
22:56be key on the agenda, a way to face the crisis, the security crisis that Haiti is experiencing,
23:02and of course, the condemnation of the Israeli genocide that is happening today as we speak
23:09in Gaza and in the West Bank, but mainly in Gaza.
23:13Now we are seeing live images again in this venue where the ALBA-TCP summit is going to
23:18be held, as President Nicolas Ortega of Nicaragua just arrived and is being welcomed by President
23:27Nicolas Maduro, as all the heads of states and government of member nations, and in some
23:34cases representatives, high-level delegations have come here to take part in these discussions
23:41and continue on the growth of the alliance and strengthening its pillars since its foundation,
23:49the core basis on what they function to continue ensuring and fighting for the self-determination
23:56of the peoples of the region.
24:11So those are the live images we are getting from Caracas, President Nicolas Maduro is
24:16welcoming all the different heads of states of government, we've seen Rafa Gonzalez, Ortega,
24:22we've seen Prime Ministers also from Caribbean Islands, Dominica, St. Louis have all gathered
24:28here.
24:29All the member states have come here, and shortly, in just a matter of hours, the meeting
24:35is going to be held.
24:36We will have, of course, the statements of the different heads of states and government
24:40live here on TeleSource, so stay tuned with that first.
24:43They will have a closed-door meeting that will last for over an hour, and then they
24:47will walk the grounds, they will see the exposition, about the 20-year anniversary
24:53showing all the achievements that have been gained during these two decades of history
25:00of ALBA-TCP, and later on they will have the photo-op, and of course the intervention,
25:05the speeches of each of the heads of states and government that are present here, and
25:10the representatives not only of the ALBA member states, but also of Haiti and Palestine as
25:15special guests to this summit.
25:19We are going back to Caracas as President Luis Arce of the Provincial National State
25:25of Bolivia is also arriving, entering the venue, and is about to be received.
25:32We will have very shortly the images of President Nicolás Maduro welcoming the President of
25:41the Provincial National State.
25:47Luis Arce is being welcomed by President Nicolás Maduro.
26:02As we were talking, ALBA-TCP in these 20 years of history has many achievements.
26:07We were talking about the literacy campaigns that free the regions of Nicaragua, Bolivia,
26:11Venezuela of illiteracy, and we were lastly talking about the Miracle Mission, which has
26:19returned the sight of over 5 million people in the region completely for free.
26:26In social inclusion, another important achievement that ALBA-TCP strives for, the psychosocial
26:33genetic clinical study of people with disabilities has identified and assisted over 1 million
26:39vulnerable individuals, actively integrating them into society, training of community doctors,
26:45the Latin American School of Medicine, with campuses in Cuba and Venezuela, which reinforces
26:53a humanistic and solidarity-driven approach to healthcare, which these are all key aspects
27:00of ALBA-TCP.
27:01The tenants, the key axis of how it works, always taking into account the people from
27:09the ground up.
27:10That's also why the people have a very important participation in all these events.
27:17As we were saying, before getting to this day, this Saturday, that the heads of state
27:21and governments are going to meet, yesterday, Friday, the social movements held their own
27:26council meeting in Caracas, and it's a way that many of our guests that were here from
27:33the South, in different spaces of our news multi-platform, they were referring, they
27:38were saying how it's something that, in some cases, for the people that were newcomers,
27:42it's something that they had not seen in other places, the way that this works, that the
27:47people have a direct impact in the decision-making of the authorities.
27:53They have a direct contact with their authorities, and it's not as in the case of one person,
27:59one of our guests from India, was referring that when you see all these other summits
28:03of other international groups, they only listen to the people when there are protests.
28:08In this case, there's no need to protest because the space is open for the people to have their
28:12opinion, have direct contact to bring what their concerns and their proposals to find
28:18a way to get solutions to the numerous obstacles that the region and the world as a whole faces
28:24in a context today that is very complicated, as we are living in different crises, not
28:29only in the Middle East, and in different also aspects, the climate crisis, the financial
28:36crisis, different things happening, coming from, especially the recovery of the economy,
28:43coming from the pandemic, coming from the COVID-19 pandemic, which pretty much harmed
28:51very seriously the different economies of the region as well, and developing countries,
28:58of island countries, most of the Caribbean island countries also here present in this summit.
29:05We continue to see President Nicolas Maduro welcoming heads of states arriving here for
29:15the summit, ahead of the summit.
29:28So we are seeing images as the president of Venezuela welcomes Gaston Brown, the prime
29:34minister of Argentina and Barbuda, and they're coming here.
29:38So as we were saying, the alliance, the Bolivar alliance is a space where solidarity is always
29:45going to be prevailed because it's at the basement, at the grassroots of what was created
29:49from the beginning by the commander of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro, and the then
29:56president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, Rafael Fría.
30:01Through solidarity, they continue to work and to express the things that we're going
30:07to start working together.
30:09We were saying here, we were talking about the different achievements that have been
30:14gained during the process.
30:15We were talking about the medical mission.
30:17We were talking about the end of illiteracy in numerous countries.
30:20We were talking about a different approach to healthcare through the training of doctors
30:25in the different international Latin American schools with campuses in Venezuela and Cuba.
30:31And these doctors would then go to treat people in low-income neighborhoods and places where
30:37they never had access to a doctor before.
30:39But all that is happening today thanks to this humanistic work of ALBA-TCP, the way
30:46it was envisioned by Fidel Castro and Rafael Chavez Fría.
30:52As we were saying, today is not only just a regular meeting, because today ALBA-TCP
30:57celebrates two decades as a pillar of Latin American social movements.
31:02Two decades after its creation, ALBA-TCP has achieved numerous milestones stemming from
31:08solidarity among nations and going beyond mere commercial ties.
31:13Today, the alliance remains for the region, a transformative project for Latin America
31:18and the Caribbean, and it has in place short, medium, and long-term goals, and long-term
31:25goals for the sustainable development and for the equality of its people and for the
31:33coming on, the strengthening of a united Latin America, as Jorge Arreaza said during his
31:39speech in the meeting of Council of Social Movements that was held on Friday, the meeting
31:47where he said that the multilateral integration of Latin America is the true way of a true
31:53independence, that is, the creation of the great homeland, as is also said in the Charter
32:00of Jamaica, which is kind of like the backbone from which this ALBA-TCP was later created,
32:07following the ideas of the great leaders of the region, as Simón Bolívar, José Martí
32:12Sucre, all these ideas of creating the great homeland of a united Latin America and Caribbean.
32:29So ALBA-TCP is also taking care of the economy, not only, as we were saying just in a moment,
32:38health, but also the economy is a way to tackle the inequalities of the different
32:47peoples of the region, as with the creation of the ALBA Bank, in order to fund projects
32:54for the development and for the proposals of new development areas in different regions,
33:01so that continue to create wealth and continue to create prosperity in the different countries
33:06of the member states, but also always taking into account the social aspect of the people
33:13in order not to leave anyone behind.
33:28Now, in the field, as we were saying, of international economics, ALBA-TCP has promoted
33:32the creation of a space of sovereignty and solidarity among the peoples, based on the
33:39foundations of this institution, which promotes a post-liberal and anti-imperialist approach
33:45aimed at strengthening the national sovereignty of its members. The initial alliance between
33:50Venezuela and Cuba was later joined by Bolivia in 2006, Nicaragua in 2007, Dominica in 2008,
33:57Antigua and Barbuda in 2009, San Vicente and the Grenadines in 2009, San Vicente and San
