00:16of justices of peace in criminal districts throughout the country.
00:23In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from hospital following
00:28an emergency surgery.
00:34And in Gaza, injured people and dead bodies were transported to the Baptist Hospital after
00:40overnight district strikes targeted the Abu Iskander area.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:55We begin with the news, stay with us.
00:57In Venezuela, polling stations began to close for the election of justices of peace in criminal
01:01districts throughout the nation.
01:04Precisely, Venezuelans voted for 15,000 justices of peace in a process that highlighted the
01:10power given by the Bolivarian government to communes and which constituted a celebration
01:16of the popular consultations that were held nationwide prior to election day.
01:21Since early morning on Sunday, citizens went to the polls, which were meant to close at
01:264 p.m. local time, but remained open for four additional hours amid massive voter turnout.
01:32In this regard, voting centers have started to close in the state of Zulia and the capital
01:37district of Caracas.
01:39Criminal justices of peace will be mediators in matters such as family and neighborhood
01:44conflicts, among other situations.
01:46In addition, their functions include promoting conciliation and preventing violence in the
01:51communes.
01:57In Bolivar State, Venezuelan citizens also go on Sunday to voting centers to cast their
02:01ballots and elect the justices of peace that will represent their communities.
02:07The opening of the center was at 8 o'clock in the morning without any inconvenience.
02:12Thank God we have had enough people coming to the center.
02:15So far there are no problems at the voting center.
02:19I'm a candidate for the elections that are being held today because I consider them very
02:25important for justice and peace in our nation and in our homeland commune of Bolivar, in
02:31the state of Bolivar, here in Bolivar City.
02:36And in Valera Municipality, Trujillo State, citizens are also exercising their right to
02:41vote to elect justices of peace while calling on their fellow citizens to join the process.
02:49Today we are very happy and grateful to God because since very early in the morning we
02:53are here in the voting center to exercise our right to vote, and thus, continue to ensure
03:00the peace of our country, Venezuela, as our President Nicolas Maduro has indicated.
03:09From here, we can show the whole world that we are a symbol of peace, Venezuela is a symbol
03:14of peace, and that is why I exercise my right to vote on this beautiful Sunday.
03:24I invite the whole country to join our process.
03:29It is quick and simple.
03:31It is easy to vote.
03:35The invitation is for everyone over 15 years and older.
03:40And in this context, we go now to our correspondent in Caracas, Gladys Quezada.
03:45Hi Gladys, tell us, the letter is over there.
03:47Yes, thanks for the time and the contact here in Telus or English, and with from the South
03:54to our audience, and the opportunity to tell you what is going on here in Venezuela.
03:59Now we have been doing this report all over the day with the consultation and the voting
04:05for the peace justices here in Venezuela.
04:08The peace justices are an instance of the communal state, of the communal justice, and
04:13are part of the construction of a new way of enhancing the democracy and the government
04:19here in Venezuela.
04:20This is the first time that this is being done in Venezuela and in the world, because
04:25the structures are also renewing under this new form of governance.
04:31I have to say today, December 15th, is not only the voting for the peace justices, it's
04:35also the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the constitution that was enabled and enacted
04:42by the then president and now late commander of the Bolivarian revolution, Rafael Chavez
04:47Frías.
04:48And also, I have to say that the election of the peace justices is one of the many ways
04:54to ensure that the justice, the peace, the concord, and the agreements come from the
05:00people to the people and for the people.
05:03Because those who are being elected today, they have no formation on the legal matters.
05:07They have the goodwill, they have the approval of the people, and they have the know-how
05:13of the territories, the communes, the municipalities, and the regions.
05:17I have to say also that Venezuelans are going to choose among 15,000 justices of peace.
05:25And out of those, they are going to choose also the substitutes to ensure the continuity
05:30of that legal process.
05:32The justices are going to intervene in minor legal matters, that's to say, minor robbery,
05:39familiar disputes, territorial disputes, and other neighborhood conflicts that could appear.
05:45And they have now the authority to intervene and to decide on these cases.
05:50Also, they have the most representation and the most backing of their people because they
05:55are respected subjects of these communities and these communes.
05:59This, as I was saying, is the way, is the acme, is the top of these consultations of
06:05the people and a way to enhance, to construct the communal future and the communal state
06:12for Venezuela.
06:13Also, this is one of the last consultations because now coming into the end of the year,
06:19this is a moment for reflection, is a moment for review and for summarizing what has been
06:24done in favor of the people, and this is the last one.
06:27So, for today, the opening hours was 8 a.m. and the closing hours was programmed for 4 p.m.
06:35But because of the long lines and the coming up of people, they decided, the authorities
06:41decided to extend the voting hours until 8 p.m., four more hours, so everyone who wants
06:47to vote can do so and can come to the voting centers and cast their ballots here.
06:52Those are the main topics of today.
06:54Those are the main issues of this news topic here in Venezuela.
06:59And now I'm giving the signal back to you.
07:05Thank you, Ila, for all the information on this paramount event.
07:08From Caracas, we were talking to our correspondent Gladys Casada in the framework of the elections
07:12being held in Venezuela to choose justices of peace in criminal districts.
07:17And with this report, let's take a short break, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok
07:21at TELUS or English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
07:25Wilber, Valparaiso, with us.
07:43Welcome back to From the South.
07:45The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, arrived in the capital of Quintana Roo aboard
07:50the Mayan train on Saturday night.
07:52Accompanied by members of her cabinet and several governors of the area near the train,
07:57the president highlighted that the work is a legacy of former President López Obrador.
08:02According to the Mayan train management, during the first year, 603,082 passengers traveled
08:09on it, which represented an improvement in the living conditions of Mexicans and visitors
08:14to the country.
08:15The head of state congratulated the workers who made the construction of the train possible,
08:20as well as the national defense, which was responsible for the project.
08:33Thank you very much, Chetumal.
08:36Thank you, Quintana Roo.
08:38Thank you all, the World Team, governors.
08:45Today marks the one-year anniversary of the first trip on the Mayan train, and also the
08:55opening of the southern section of the Mayan train from Escarcega to Chetumal.
09:05First of all, I would like to congratulate the construction workers who made this historic
09:09feat of the Mayan train possible.
09:15They are the mind, body, and strength of Mexico's transformation.
09:25In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from hospital following
09:29an emergency surgery.
09:31Let's see what a correspondent from Sao Paulo, Ignacio Lemos, says in this regard.
09:36In his ex-account, Lemos informed, Lula has just been discharged from the hospital and
09:41is expected to leave the Syrian Lebanese hospital today.
09:45The president had a very good post-operative process within the expected range.
09:50He will remain in Sao Paulo at least until Thursday and then return to Brasilia with
09:54a slower pace of work for the next 15 days.
09:58He cannot do physical activities for now.
10:06After being discharged from the hospital, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
10:10assured that he will soon resume his governmental activities.
10:17I'm returning home now, at ease.
10:19With certainty that I'm healed, I hardly need to take care of myself.
10:26I can't run on the treadmill with athlete speed because I'm not an athlete.
10:30I have to stop weight training for a while.
10:35I need to stay about 60 days or so quiet, but I can go back to normal work.
10:42I will only stay at home until Thursday here in Sao Paulo.
10:45I will do the last tomography and then I will go back to work.
10:49Meanwhile, Brazilian President Lula da Silva reiterated that he will not accept disrespect
10:56for democracy and the constitution while emphasizing the Braga Neto case.
11:05What happened this week with the order of General Braga's imprisonment?
11:08I'm going to show you that I'm more patient and democratic.
11:11I believe he has every right to the presumption of innocence.
11:19What I did not have, I want them to have.
11:22I have every right and every respect for the law to be enforced.
11:25What if those guys did?
11:32What they tried to do, they will have to be severely punished.
11:35This country had people who did 10% of what they did and died in jail.
11:44It is not possible that we accept this violation of democracy, of the constitution, and it
11:49is not possible that a generous country like Brazil has people of high military rank plotting
11:58the death of a President of the Republic, of the Vice President and of a Judge President
12:03of the Supreme Electoral Court.
12:08The Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Bolivia began on Sunday, the voting day, where people
12:12will elect for the third time the high authorities of the judiciary and the plurinational constitutional
12:17court.
12:18More than 7,335,000 Bolivians were summoned to elect 19 high court judges.
12:25The Supreme Electoral Tribunal enabled at least 5,597 voting presence in the nine departments
12:32of the state and 33,000 polling stations.
12:36In this sense, President Luis Arce exercised his right to vote and assured that this is
12:40the only constitutional and democratic way for the nation to have new judicial authorities.
12:48In Guatemala, meteorological authorities warned about 16 earthquakes registered in
13:05the country in the last 24 hours, some of them perceptible in several points of the
13:10territory.
13:11According to a report issued by the Department of Research and Geophysical Services, the
13:16National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology informed that the
13:22earthquakes registered magnitudes between 2.1 and 4.8.
13:26The seismic movements originated in the western department of Esquintla, in Quetzalcóatlango,
13:33Santa Rosa and Jutiapa.

13:41damages after these seismic events.
13:48On Saturday, at least two people were killed as fierce winds from Cyclone Sido lashed French
13:54Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte.

13:59Two deaths have been confirmed so far in Petite Terre, the smaller of the two main islands
14:04of Mayotte.
14:05The acting transport minister said the Pamdatsi airport suffered major damage, especially
14:10to the control tower.
14:12Cyclone Sido is reported to be the most violent and destructive storm in the territory since
14:171934.
14:19On the other hand, acting Interior Minister Bruno Retailleur posted that 140 fresh troops
14:26and firefighters would be sent to the scene to help with the recovery effort, doubling
14:32the deployment sent earlier in the week.
14:40On Sunday, a sand and dust storm hit southwestern Iran, resulting in the closure of schools
14:46and public buildings and the cancellation of flights due to poor visibility.
14:50A thick yellow fog shrouded the Iranian provinces of Kuzestan and Bushred, where buildings were
14:57barely visible and residents had to protect themselves with face masks.
15:02As a result of the storm, schools and public services were closed in southwest Iran and
15:07all flights were suspended until further notice.
15:10In addition, in the city of Abadan, in Kuzestan province, the air quality was considered hazardous,
15:16exceeding by more than 25 times the pollution indexes considered acceptable by the World
15:21Health Organization.
15:22Dust and sand storms have long affected the region but have become more intense and frequent
15:28in recent years, mainly due to climate change.
15:37Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique, bringing strong winds after passing through
15:41islands in the southeastern Indian Ocean.
15:44According to local authorities, Cyclone Chido made landfall near Pemba, in the province
15:49of Cape Delgado, on the north coast of Mozambique.
15:52It brought strong winds and rains that also affected the province of Nampula.
15:57A preliminary report indicates that there was damage to buildings and power outages
16:02in several parts of the country.
16:04Cyclone Chido hit Mozambique after passing through the French department of Mayotte,
16:09where it left more than 14 people dead and material damage.
16:13The nearby islands of Comoros and Madagascar were also affected.

16:54Welcome back to From the South.
17:04In southern Palestine, an Israeli attack on a United Nations school that housed displaced
17:10people killed at least 20 civilians, among them women and children.
17:14According to local media, the aggression against the education center from the United Nations
17:19Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, took place near the Nasser Hospital,
17:25located west of the city of Kanchanis.
17:27Furthermore, sources informed that the majority of the victims were children attending school
17:32at the time of the attack.
17:34In addition, the Israeli army reportedly destroyed several residential buildings in the Jabalia
17:39camp, the largest of the refugee camps in the Gaza Strip.
17:48The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel's expansionist policy, warning about
17:52the escalation of Israeli violence in the territory.
17:55The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates warned through a communiqué about the escalation
18:01of violence of the Zionist entity in the region and accused the armed forces of that country
18:07of perpetrating an ethnic cleansing.
18:10In this sense, the Ministry explained that the expansionist measures include the seizure
18:15of lands and the installation of Israeli surveillance and communication towers, in
18:20addition to increasing the number of military checkpoints.
18:23Moreover, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry criticized the lack of concrete actions by
18:28the international community to stop Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
18:37In Syria, the new regime ordered to disband all the bases of the Palestinian resistance
18:42factions in Damascus and to disarm them.
18:45In a statement, the regime reported that it sent a senior official from its Military Operations
18:50Administration to the Yarmouk Palestinian Refugee Camp to inform that they would no
18:55longer be allowed to carry weapons or have training camps.
18:59Following this, local media reported clashes between the Popular Front for the Liberation
19:03of Palestine and HTS terrorist groups in Osaja village, west of the capital.
19:10The new regime's orders state that factions must disband their military formations as
19:15soon as possible in exchange for political and charitable engagement under the flag of
19:22the new Syrian state.
19:28The Prime Minister of Ireland, Simon Harris, has addressed Tel Aviv's decision to close
19:32its embassy in Dublin after the European nation showed its support for South Africa's genocide
19:38case against Israel at the International Court of Justice for the Zionist regime's
19:42actions in Palestine.
19:43The Irish Prime Minister took to his social network X to state,
19:48This is a deeply regrettable decision from the Netanyahu government.
19:52I utterly reject the assertion that Ireland is anti-Israel.
19:57Ireland is pro-peace, pro-human rights and pro-international law.
20:02It wants a two-state solution and for Israel and Palestine to live in peace and security.
20:07Ireland will always speak up for human rights and international law, nothing will distract
20:13from that.
