00:00Venezuela is preparing to host the 24th Summit of Heads of State and Government of ALBA-TCP.
00:20In Palestine, Israeli strikes killed dozens of Palestinians and injured several others
00:24in the Gaza Strip.
00:28And in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, a voracious fire has destroyed around a hundred
00:33small stores in Las Americas market.
00:41Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Delicious Studios
00:45in Havana, Cuba.
00:47We begin with the news.
00:59And this Saturday, the ALBA-TCP 24th Summit of the Heads of State and Government will
01:04take place in Caracas.
01:05For more information, we are going live with our collaborator Garfield Burford for all
01:10the details from the ground.
02:11the event.
02:12In fact, we can speak with a representative now from one of those social movements.
02:37We can now join Candice Sebre, who is the Research and Education Officer for the Oilfield
02:43Workers Trade Union in Trinidad and Tobago.
02:45Candice will join us right here live on TELUS or English.
02:49Candice, we're going to start a little bit this way.
02:52How is it for you being here as part of this 24th Summit of ALBA-TCP?
02:57This is a very, very important moment, not only for ALBA-TCP, which would have set the
03:03stage for the movement, which I'm a part of, ALBA Movimientos, because the oilfield
03:09workers has been mobilizing throughout the Caribbean.
03:12And through that, we would have created the Assembly of Caribbean People that we have
03:18had for the past over 25 years.
03:21And we're also part of ALBA Movimientos since its inception.
03:24And this is also an anniversary for ALBA Movimientos.
03:27And it's been quite symbolic because there's a rejoining and a rekindling of the agenda
03:32between ALBA Movimientos and ALBA-TCP.
03:37And this is very important because if you look at the geopolitical context right now,
03:40there's so much happening within the Caribbean, all of the things that we still need to defend
03:45that Fidel would have spoken about Cuba.
03:48We have the reality that's happening in Haiti.
03:50We even have the breakdown and the shift and the attacks on the trade union movement that
03:56we obviously are personally affected by that is happening.
04:01And we have all of these movements that are coming together here in Venezuela, which is
04:04so very important.
04:05There are very important things happening within Venezuela to counter this geopolitical
04:09shift that's happening.
04:11And we look forward to see more things, more vanguard things coming out of here and more
04:16vanguard things that are happening, as Fidel would have done so many years ago, as Chavez
04:21would have continued to do.
04:22And it was very important for Chavez and Fidel to always include the English-speaking Caribbean.
04:27As you can see within ALBA-TCP, they do include these Caribbean islands.
04:32They've always placed us on the forefront and recognize the importance of the contributions
04:36that we would have made over the years.
04:38And so I'm very happy to be one of the many representatives.
04:40I happen to be the lucky one who got to be here, but I represent so many more persons
04:45that are really happy for this very important moment and who would have liked to be here
04:49today.
04:50Excellent.
04:51So we're celebrating the 20 years of ALBA today, marking 20 years to the day when ALBA
04:57was formed by, of course, with that famous hug between Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.
05:02How does it feel marking 20th anniversary of the movement?
05:08For me, it feels quite symbolic.
05:11Recently within ALBA Movimientos, there was a huge study, a large study about what it
05:15was like to be a revolutionary at the time of Fidel, what she meant to all of us, if
05:20we could be like Fidel, if we could be like Che.
05:22And so this is a point of rekindling that history, of understanding the principles and
05:29all of the values that they would have stood for, and to try and bring that back and to
05:33regather our forces to counter that geopolitical context that is affecting us all very dearly
05:39today.
05:40Candice, really appreciate it.
05:41Candice Sebrell there, who is a research and education officer for the Oilfield Workers
05:46Trade Union in Trinidad and Tobago.
05:47Thank you so much.
05:48Really appreciate it.
05:50Thank you very much, Candice.
05:51Candice there, speaking with us about the extraordinary summit that is taking place
05:53here today.
05:54Of course, in just a few hours now, the leaders will come in to this building.
05:59They will walk on this red carpet.
06:00They'll go through a tunnel of all the glitz of the occasion, all the majesty of the occasion
06:06marking 20 years.
06:07And of course, they'll be taking a family photo on an image not dissimilar to the one
06:11behind me here, Luis, as they gather for, of course, to mark 20 years.
06:16This is the 24th summit of ALBA.
06:18I was here in Venezuela earlier this year, in April, when, of course, the 23rd summit
06:24was held.
06:25Since then, so many things have happened, so many geopolitical developments that will
06:29take center stage here today.
06:30There are, of course, the unilateral coercive measures against not just Venezuela and Cuba,
06:35but also Nicaragua as well.
06:37There's also the situation in Gaza, which continues to dominate the attention of the
06:42world.
06:43ALBA taking that on as well.
06:44The state of Palestine will be represented here as well.
06:46CELAC will be represented.
06:47It's the community of Latin American and Caribbean states.
06:50All in all, it promises to be an extraordinary summit.
06:54The leaders are gathering here, and, of course, the anticipation is building for that.
06:57Back over to you in Havana, of course, for, of course, keep you across all the developments
07:03here on TELUS.
07:04We're back to you, Luis.
07:06Thank you, Garfield.
07:07Of course, we'll stay tuned with you guys, with you and with Belén de los Santos as
07:11well to everything that is happening in this paramount summit that is being held in Caracas
07:16of ALBA-TCP in its 20th anniversary, the 24th Summit of Heads of States and Government.
07:22Continuing on topic, let's now see about the origin of this important Bolivarian alliance
07:27in this following work.
07:30On December 13, 1994, Hugo Chávez arrived in Cuba for the first time.
07:39I think that the ALBA began with that embrace.
07:42It was that day of that embrace.
07:44My humble life was sealed forever by the side of the giant that is Fidel.
07:50Next morning, at the Simón Bolívar House Museum, Fidel Castro sits in the front row
07:54to listen to Chávez's keynote address on the emancipated project of the Liberator,
08:00adding how it could be realized in the new times.
08:02Later, in the Great Hall of the University of Havana, Chávez attached importance to
08:07integrating Latin America and the Caribbean as a single nation.
08:10A century that is coming for us is a century of hope.
08:15It is our century.
08:16It is a century of the resurrection, of the Bolivarian dream, of Martí's dream, of the
08:22Latin American dream.
08:24Ten years later, on December 14, 2004, the two commanders founded ALBA, the Bolivarian
08:32Alliance for the Peoples of America, an integrationist, historical and unprecedented organization
08:38which changed the history of Latin America and the Caribbean.
08:43An integration mechanism grounded in new principles of solidarity, reciprocity, respect for asymmetries
08:50and differences in our economies and societies, respect for the sovereignty of our peoples
08:55and for integration of Bolivar and Martí styles.
09:01The scenario was difficult by that time.
09:03In 2005, Mar del Plata was under the world spotlight.
09:07The memories of the historical Fourth Summit of the Americas live on many.
09:11There, Chávez spoke loud and clear.
09:14Free trade won't sort out our problems of employment, poverty or misery.
09:20Those who still believe that story, forget about it.
09:23The conclusion of the summit was the rejection of the bloc of South American countries belonging
09:28to the FTAA.
09:30The free trade area of the Americas boosted by the United States.
09:40Concurrently, Chávez overshadowed the FTAA by charismatically hosting the counter-summit
09:46in the third ALBA TCP edition, generating a positive buzz among the 40,000 participants.
09:52Since here, in Mar del Plata, it is the tomb of the FTAA, the tomb of the FTAA.
10:22Let's say it, let's say it, FTAA, get stuffed, FTAA, get stuffed.
10:39Twenty years later, millions of Latin Americans and Caribbeans have benefited from ALBA's
10:44programs.
10:45Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have been declared illiteracy-free territories.
10:49The Miracle Mission has restored sight to millions of people free of charge, and thousands
10:54of youngsters in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa have been trained as doctors.
11:02Many presidents have passed by here in Venezuela, but there have never been such commitments
11:07to other countries.
11:08Fortunately, Chávez's side-by-side Fidel Castro made it happen.
11:12Chávez was able to provide free eye surgeries for us with eye diseases.
11:16No government had done such good action before in Venezuela.
11:25And in my community, there is a lot of poverty.
11:28Reality surpasses my expectations what I thought before arriving.
11:32I learned not only to be a doctor, but also to be a poet, to be cultured.
11:36I feel that I am different from what I was since I came here.
11:39The Cuban teaching doctrine is very deep, very humanistic, which is what is missing
11:43in our Latin American countries.
11:50We are really grateful to the president of Cuba, Fidel Castro.
11:54So on behalf of all the people of Olentepec, I would like to thank you for all that you
11:59have helped us out.
12:01And we hope that you will continue providing your help for us to be able to survive.
12:06Today, the right-wing is trying to revive the neoliberal agenda.
12:10The challenge is not easy.
12:11Chávez and Fidel warned us of it.
12:15Our independence is now or never.
12:17And Alba is that independence.
12:25In Cuba, we say homeland or death.
12:32Here I dare to say Latin America united and justice or death.
12:37But there will be no death.
12:38We will be ever onward to victory.
12:47We now have our first short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok
12:51at TELUS for English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
12:55We'll be right back. Stay with us.
13:08Welcome back.
13:35Pakistan-Israeli strikes killed dozens of Palestinians and injured several others in
13:39the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
13:41WAFA news agency reported that four citizens of the Sadala family were killed at the occupation
13:46shelter house in Jabalia town, north of the Palestinian enclave.
13:49In addition, civilians were injured in an attack on the Jaffa School northeast of Gaza
13:54City.
13:55After 14 months of siege that has left much of the enclave destroyed and uninhabitable,
14:01thousands of Gazans are taking refuge in schools that are still standing.
14:05At least 44,875 people have been killed and more than 106,000 wounded in Gaza since Israel
14:11began its genocide in October 2023.
14:19Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has ordered the military to remain occupying throughout
14:23the winter the Golan Heights bordering Syrian territory.
14:27The Golan Heights is located in the UN patrol buffer zone separating Israeli and Syrian
14:31forces.
14:32Israel seized the demilitarized zone on the Strait of Qatar on Sunday, just hours after
14:37Syrian terrorist forces swept President Bashar al-Assad from power.
14:42The move drew international condemnation, including from the United Nations, although
14:46close allies, the United States, said Thursday it was consistent with Israel's right to self-defense.
14:55Israeli forces launched Friday several airstrikes against Syrian army facilities in the provinces
15:00of Latakia and Tartus.
15:02According to the Arab multinational TV channel Al Mayadeen, the Israeli forces continued
15:06their incursion into the south of Syria, towards the capital Damascus.
15:10On Thursday, the Syrian regime announced it had achieved total air superiority in Syria
15:15and it had destroyed 86% of the Arab nation's air defense systems.
15:18However, it clarified that some air defense complexes are still operational but are not
15:22considered a major threat to the Israeli air force.
15:24And also in Syria, the new government led by the terrorist group HDS, formerly Al-Qaeda,
15:34affiliate Al-Nusra Front, has called for demonstrations to celebrate the overthrow of President Bashar
15:39al-Assad.
15:40Various sectors of the population responded to the call and took to the streets with banners
15:43supporting the new government.
15:46Demonstrations took place in the provincial capitals of Homs, Hama, Aleppo, Idlib, Deir
15:50and Latakia, and in dozens of cities in this Arab nation.
15:54These calls come in the midst of the configuration of the control of the country by terrorist
15:58groups that are now in power, supported by Western countries, mainly the United States
16:02as well as Israel.
16:08In South Korea, lawmakers voted Saturday to impeach President Jun Suk-kyo for his failed
16:13attempt to declare martial law last week.
16:15Out of 300 lawmakers, 204 voted to impeach the president on charges of rebellion while
16:2085 voted against.
16:22Three abstained and eight votes were cancelled.
16:25Jun is now suspended from office while South Korea's constitutional court considers whether
16:29to uphold his impeachment.
16:31Police estimate that at least 200,000 people filled the streets of Seoul ahead of the vote
16:35to demand Jun's impeachment and arrest.
16:38It was the second such motion to impeach Jun over his failed attempt to impose martial
16:42law early last week.

17:58In Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, a voracious fire destroyed around a hundred
18:02small stores in last America's market.
18:04Fire department spokesman Oscar Triminio said the fire broke out at about 1 a.m.
18:11local time on Friday.
18:13However, the alert came hours later when the fire had already spread.
18:17Flames were brought under control in the early hours of Friday morning with no fatalities
18:21but there was considerable loss of merchandise.
18:23Authorities say electrical installations had not been supervised and that wooden structures
18:27adjacent to the building helped spread the flames.
18:35When we arrived at the site we saw a large fire in an area with a surface floor and three
18:40lower levels where there were shoe stores, clothing stores and other kinds of stores.
18:46Chilean experts from the National Seismological Center reported prior tremendous earthquake
18:51measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale which shook Guadalparaiso in the central-southern region
18:55of the country.
18:56The quake had its epicenter 48 kilometers south of Curico in the Maule region, though
19:01it is assured that the earth tremor did not meet the conditions for a tsunami to be generated
19:05on the coast.
19:06The natural phenomenon has hit several regions from Coquimbo to Araucanía with its greatest
19:12intensity in the downtown area.
19:14So far, no major damages have been registered.
19:17Likewise, the official briefing is awaited after the respective assessments in the affected
