00:00:00We are back once again. Welcome to the All 32 pod. Mike Giardi, Will Parkinson alongside.
00:00:18Just another massive week and we're varying because we've been doing sort of the news
00:00:23of the day and then we've been doing division previews. We're going to pack in the AFC North
00:00:27and the NFC North later in the week, but we just wanted to react to the games that we
00:00:32saw this weekend. In particular, I mean, this is a fast flurry of football games. It was
00:00:36like a normal NFL Saturday or Sunday. In fact, maybe even beyond that because you usually
00:00:41get some games during the course of the weekend. It just kind of had that vibe again. We keep
00:00:45talking about getting closer and closer, but now we're into the last week of the preseason
00:00:49and then it's preparation for the regular season. Cut down day. All those good things
00:00:53are coming our way. Well, I just feel like I was watching the town. You just did it up
00:00:57North and that was awesome. That was awesome. It happens every once in a while. It's there.
00:01:03That got me fired up. Yeah, no, it's it was awesome. Just getting kind of back into like
00:01:08during the weekend. Nice weather out and had football on and like it was. It was. It was
00:01:13a cool. It was a cool energy. We have a lot to talk about. Obviously, as you mentioned,
00:01:16we'll get into some of the divisional previews. We'll hit two divisions at once on Wednesday,
00:01:21but want to make sure we kind of get into this regular season mode here. We're coming
00:01:24off a big weekend. Lots of talk about. We want to make sure we hop operate into it.
00:01:27Absolutely. And as a reminder to you, the show is brought to you by prize picks. The
00:01:32exclusive daily fantasy part of the CLNS media network. And of course, game time. Best tickets.
00:01:37Best prices to get you in to see any events you want to see. I'd say it all the time after
00:01:42every time I do this, will and I use it. You should use it as well. It is outstanding.
00:01:46But well, I'm going to let you lead us off today because we decided what we're going
00:01:49to do with all these games. There's 15 games that we all took a look at here. Want to break
00:01:54down for you a little bit. Things that stood out to us. You're going to start us off.
00:01:58Yeah, there's there's quite a bit to kind of hop into. So I'm going to start with kind
00:02:03of probably the news of the weekend, realistically, and that's Caleb Williams and the Bears. You
00:02:07know, we're taking on the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously, there's a lot of news in Bengals
00:02:11land and we'll be getting more into this a little bit when we do the AFC North. There's
00:02:14a lot of sort of hold ins and holdouts we've talked about one. We have not talked a lot
00:02:18about Jamar Chase and you know, we're kind of getting to the point where I'm not sure
00:02:21Jamar Chase is playing. It's playing a game for the Bengals until that contract. We saw
00:02:26Chad Ochoa's anchor Chad Johnson talk about that. So I just want to throw that in there
00:02:29that he's like, hey, I wouldn't be surprised if Jamar dug his heels in here and wouldn't
00:02:33practice again until he's got the new contract, let alone play the Bengals. We didn't see
00:02:37a whole lot. Shout to Cole Burgess. Let's say both Courtney and alums, one one of which
00:02:41Cole had a couple of receptions, you know, for the for the Bengals and his, you know,
00:02:46his first edit book catches Cortland D3 national champions. Chris Jenkins of the Bengals, you
00:02:52know, a rookie who I think a lot of guys liked and obviously really successful all pro level
00:02:55player in his dad and national championship player at Michigan. Yeah, with not too many
00:03:00guys in the Bengals playing that are going to be let alone active on game day, guys that
00:03:05will contribute. Chris Jenkins is one of them and I felt like getting his first sack and
00:03:09it's had a tackle for loss as a guy who impressed in college, really stat run defender, super
00:03:14strong player, really hyper athletic. Could you get more in the pass rush? We got to see
00:03:18him, you know, kind of get off the Schneid, you know, there with with his first sack.
00:03:21So not a ton to touch on with the Bengals in terms of on field for four inch. First
00:03:24of all, they got killed on the field and again, not too many players of notable presence playing
00:03:29there. Obviously, kind of, again, as I mentioned, the story of the weekend at the bury the weed
00:03:33here, Caleb Williams, you know, six to 13. I know a lot of people that don't like Caleb
00:03:38Williams will point to all 50% completion percentage and stuff. We saw a couple of plays,
00:03:43three in particular, one that got called, you know, that was not a touchdown. The other
00:03:46one, a touchdown running the ball. And then obviously the throw that kind of broke the
00:03:50internet on Saturday afternoon, second week in a row. Yeah. Second week in a row, Caleb
00:03:56did what Caleb does. And I think the biggest thing there's kind of touch on here is that
00:04:00a lot of the conversation about Caleb coming out of college was we almost got bored of
00:04:04how insane some of the throws. And I always point to this throw against UCLA where his
00:04:08entire body was off the ground, rolling to his left and through it probably 98 miles
00:04:14an hour on a, on a seed, 40 yards down the field. And like, we saw that again on Sunday
00:04:19on an NFL field and whether it's against starters or backups or whatever it is, we're seeing
00:04:24it on the NFL field and he holds the ball for a really long time. That's not ever going
00:04:28to change. Patrick Holmes holds the ball for a really long time. A lot of guys, Aaron Rogers
00:04:33notoriously holds the ball for a really long time. Obviously it's a quick release and can
00:04:36get the ball out and that'll, we'll see that continue to develop, but ceiling Caleb go
00:04:40out there and in front of the home crowd gets to kind of show just a little bit of
00:04:44what is going to make this rookie year. I think so special just that those highs was
00:04:49really cool to see again, not too much other things to take away from a doomsday, obviously
00:04:52in the bears looking good, a couple of interceptions, but I feel like Caleb's obvious kind of the
00:04:56story of the weekend.
00:04:57Yeah. Interesting too, that the doomsday connection is popping up and look, they came in both
00:05:02top 10 picks, obviously Caleb one doomsday nine, but they have Keenan Allen, they have
00:05:06DJ more. So you kind of look at Cole commit who they paid a good amount of money to play
00:05:10tight end for them and when they re-upped them, but you can sort of see some synergy
00:05:15develop between these two guys already, which, you know, when you look down the line, this
00:05:20is great for the bears. If those two guys are, you know, their cornerstone quarterback
00:05:24and wide receiver and with the way the league is obviously become more and more about the
00:05:28past less and less, you can touch the quarterback, but I always do wonder, uh, it's just the
00:05:33way my brain works, like that trickle down effect. If you're week eight, nine, 10 doomsday
00:05:37becomes the guy, how does everyone else around him feel? Maybe because, maybe because Chicago
00:05:43hasn't won for so long, he just, and DJ coming from Carolina where was a great and Keenan
00:05:47obviously the last couple of years where we kept talking about the chargers and the chargers
00:05:51not doing it. Maybe they just, Hey, this is great. Let's eat. But I always wonder.
00:05:56Yeah. Do we, before we move on to the next game here, we buy anything that's the Keenan
00:06:01Allen weight stuff. Like, do we see it? Have you seen some of that on your Twitter? I have
00:06:05seen it. Um, it's hard for me when you're not in person cause you get this all the time.
00:06:11I know he wears the hoodie and the whole thing. So it's kind of hard to tell, but he does
00:06:14look a little bigger. He does look maybe a little puffier, but who, you know, who knows?
00:06:18I, it's one of those things. Yeah. When you stand next to someone, you know, all these
00:06:23years doing training camps, whether it be Patriots or anywhere else. And you stand next
00:06:26to somebody, you just have a better feel like, Oh, that guy is like, he looks like he's this
00:06:31on the field. But then you're standing next to him and you go, no, he's leaner or, or
00:06:34no, he looks bigger than I thought he did. Whatever the case may be. So yeah, certainly
00:06:38something to pay attention to. I want to talk about Detroit and Kansas city. And for me
00:06:45again, sort of a similar thing. Detroit didn't play a ton of guys, but Kansas city, it's
00:06:50Xavier worthy. And we mentioned him in the preview and my fear about these skinny, fast
00:06:55receivers. I just, I'm don't, I don't love them as a whole. Like Darnell Mooney was out
00:07:00there and you know, where I, the Patriots, when I was looking at them in free agency,
00:07:03I said, well, maybe I would consider Mooney just because I look at their room and say
00:07:07they don't, they don't have anybody. Maybe he becomes the cut above everyone else. And
00:07:10what he was a few years ago, but Xavier worthy. It seems like if not every day, every other
00:07:16day, there's something that comes from camp about him and my home's hooking up on something
00:07:19deep. And then you saw it in the game where, and I think this is going to be key for him.
00:07:26stationary, get him moving motion. And we know that Andy and Matt Nagy, who's his offensive
00:07:31coordinator in title only as Andy calls the plays, they'll want to get guys moving like
00:07:37that. And to have someone with that sort of speed, get it going before he actually turns
00:07:42up the field. And they're trying to be a little bit more careful with that, right? The league
00:07:45is saying they're watching that more because we've seen more and more guys coming in motion
00:07:48and already starting to turn up field before the ball is snapped. But to get him and his
00:07:52legs going with that speed, it's really going to stress the defense, you know, make Rasheed
00:07:57rice better, obviously create more space for Travis Kelsey. I just we'll see, but I'm already
00:08:03starting to hedge a little bit on how I felt about worthy coming out. And, you know, again,
00:08:08he'll have to take the contact and that'll be a big thing for me is one of the reasons
00:08:11why I don't like it. You're going to eventually run a slant and someone's going to stick their
00:08:15helmet between your rib cage or stick it in their sternum. And that's, you know, does
00:08:18he get up? Some bigger guys can absorb that. Keep playing. He's 165 pounds, Willie. I,
00:08:23you know, I don't know, but there is there is an element to this, I think, leads to the
00:08:28potential for some great excitement. If you're a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Yeah, no, I'm going
00:08:33to sit on the same page. Obviously, the play the weekend outside of Caleb was, you know,
00:08:37was the Mahomes behind the back pass. And it's kind of comical and it's awesome to watch.
00:08:42And, you know, it's even if you don't like the Chiefs or don't like Mahomes or whatever,
00:08:45it's you can appreciate how insane that is. The Chiefs have taken an interesting approach,
00:08:49which we've seen across the league, either the we're playing absolutely nobody,
00:08:53which is probably two thirds of the league. And the other third of the league is saying we're
00:08:57playing everybody and we're playing them a quarter, a half, whatever it may be.
00:09:00So just it's been an interesting approach from the Chiefs that Andy Reed City has always
00:09:04believed in that. So I just want to point that out. It's just interesting to Chiefs who
00:09:08coming off a Super Bowl, coming off a 20 plus game season, the whole nine yards,
00:09:12been playing everybody, you know, canaries. Tony continues to be hysterically inept.
00:09:17But, you know, other than that, I didn't hook her from the Lions.
00:09:20I thought he played a lot better this week than he did a week prior.
00:09:23He's somebody that I think, again, a lot of hype around the draft.
00:09:27I've had a really nice senior year. What was he? I remember Mike Tannenbaum.
00:09:30I believe Daniel Jeremiah were like really high on him coming out. He has a big injury.
00:09:34Didn't look great. I thought week one, week two, much more efficient.
00:09:37I believe 11 or 12 to 15 at some rushing yards. So just someone again to watch.
00:09:41He's either a long term backup. Are they going to groom him with Jared Goff and the whole thing?
00:09:45So just another name, you know, for it for Lions fans to kind of appreciate a little bit there.
00:09:49Yeah, the backup battle there is between him and Nate Sudfeld.
00:09:52And look, if the way Goff has played for them for the last two years,
00:09:56you would imagine that if something happens to Jared, that's going to be a big drop off for them,
00:10:00for a team that obviously doesn't just have division title winning aspirations,
00:10:04but has aspirations of going a step further than it did last year,
00:10:08playing for and then winning a Super Bowl. They believe they're that kind of team.
00:10:14They couldn't probably withstand at this point of their build and what Goff means to them,
00:10:18any sort of injury that kept him out long term. All right, I'll let you hit next here.
00:10:22Yeah, we're going to go Broncos Packers. We saw this game last night.
00:10:26I was very active on Jeff's Twitter because, you know,
00:10:29Zach Wilson playing and took a safety and a couple of sacks that they were touching at the end.
00:10:34So people think I'm just hating on Zach. I'm not. It was a screen passing, you know,
00:10:38in the fourth quarter of a preseason game. But nonetheless, I'll go.
00:10:42I think the biggest story is both quarterback related.
00:10:45The Packers backup quarterback situation is a bit odd.
00:10:48Yes, they've drafted guys back to back years. I thought Sean Clifford.
00:10:52I shout to Mike Renner, who eventually, you know, throughout the year,
00:10:55probably around draft time, will have on the show. I know him and Kyle Long have their new show on CBS.
00:11:01Mike's reaction, Mike's a Packer season ticket holder and, you know, and whatever.
00:11:05Mike's reaction while doing a draft for Bleach Report last year, two years ago,
00:11:08and they drafted Sean Clifford's. One of the funniest clips ever is Sean F.
00:11:11and Clifford. Are you serious? And yeah, Sean Clifford's very bad.
00:11:16And, you know, it's crazy because he had that good camp and they're like, oh,
00:11:19the Green Bay has done it again. They've sort of found this developmental guy.
00:11:23And then everything that you you talk to people that are there that have watched it.
00:11:28You read these people that are there and watching it like, boy, him and Michael Pratt, not good.
00:11:33Yeah, no, not good. And I think the one thing with Michael Pratt that's interesting is a guy
00:11:37who part of the reason that you he kind of became this draftable guy.
00:11:40And, you know, could he go as high as the third round?
00:11:43And he obviously went much later than expected just because, you know, precision,
00:11:47accurate passer, a ton of starts, took the two in program and great leader, all this stuff.
00:11:52I think he'll get better and he'll grow in the long term.
00:11:54He will be the backup there. But again, it's not been pretty in Green Bay.
00:11:57You know, from that perspective, all eyes are focused on the regular season over there
00:12:00and building off that momentum. Again, they're not playing anybody.
00:12:03And that's their approach. And they didn't play anybody when Aaron was there either.
00:12:07It's like that's just the way they've done things. So I don't take too much stock into that.
00:12:10It just is interesting watching both the backups really struggle.
00:12:14Bonick's is obviously the kind of storyline in Denver.
00:12:18I think all the rookie quarterbacks, most of these games that will hit here.
00:12:21As we mentioned, Kayla, we talked about Drake May and we'll talk about some of these other guys here in a moment.
00:12:25You know, obviously J.D. must be named the starter.
00:12:27Bonick's will likely be named the starter maybe by the time this podcast comes out
00:12:30in an hour or two, you know, on Wednesday afternoon or Monday afternoon.
00:12:34I thought he's been good. And again, I want to state I stated this in our AFC West preview.
00:12:39I stated this in our week one recap. I'm not surprised.
00:12:42I think Bonick's, this offense is tailor made for him.
00:12:45I think that a million college starts a million, you know, a million different reps.
00:12:50He is one of the oldest, if not the oldest rookies in this class.
00:12:53I don't remember exactly if he's specifically the oldest, but one of the oldest rookies in this class.
00:12:56So, again, not super surprised, but he has distinguished himself.
00:12:59He has looked like the best option for the, you know, the Broncos going forward.
00:13:03I would temper the expectations, but Bonick's, it seems like we're getting a little out of whack here where,
00:13:08you know, I thought, you know, Nate Tice did a really nice breakdown on him and just saying like,
00:13:12hey, he uses athleticism to get a pick up the first down, but he missed multiple guys
00:13:16in a match concept that like for a guy that's got 50 college starts should be hitting.
00:13:20So he's likely being the starter. He's obviously the number one priority in Denver.
00:13:24And people are much higher on Denver nationally than I was expecting.
00:13:27But those are the two things quarterbacks on either side.
00:13:30I felt like with the story of, you know, last night's game.
00:13:32Yeah, I mean, the only thing I would add to that is Nix was very smartly taking what was there.
00:13:37And you said, yeah, he did miss some stuff.
00:13:39But Stidham and Zach, obviously, as you've seen Zach up close and personal,
00:13:44there's a wide range of outcomes.
00:13:46There are some balls that get thrown that you're like, why would you do that?
00:13:49And it just seems like if Bo doesn't see it, well, he's not going to throw it.
00:13:53And that is, in the short term, the best thing probably for him
00:13:58and for that team as they try to build forward.
00:14:00You know, eventually he's going to have to push the ball down the field.
00:14:03Eventually he's going to have to let it go a little bit.
00:14:05You're going to have to throw into tighter windows.
00:14:07Like that's I think that's always a hard thing for some of these quarterbacks
00:14:10when they come out, because sometimes their programs and obviously Oregon
00:14:13was pretty dominant the last couple of years where, you know,
00:14:16it's the Marcus Mariota thing where the windows are so huge in college
00:14:19and then you come to the pros and the windows are minute.
00:14:23But that's open and you have to be able to put it there accurately
00:14:26and you have to put it there on time.
00:14:27And that's, I think, part of the learning process for him.
00:14:29But it does feel like he has moved ahead in that race.
00:14:33And I guess, Zach, maybe, though, based on the way people have talked the last week
00:14:38or so, playing a lot better and that maybe there's a case for Zach versus Stidham
00:14:42as the backup.
00:14:43I still feel like that's a Stidham move.
00:14:45It's a little agent play.
00:14:47Little coach agent play.
00:14:48Hey, will somebody trade us a seventh pick for this guy in the end of August?
00:14:52Or if we cut him, can he get on a roster spot?
00:14:55That's my inclination.
00:14:56Doesn't feel like he's really the backup.

00:16:14Listen, he has to really step it up.
00:16:16Aaron Rodgers for more than 3,750 passing yards.
00:16:21Yeah, I think both of those can happen.

00:16:37Let's go to Minnesota and Cleveland.
00:16:39And to me, the big news had nothing to do with the game.
00:16:43It had to do with Minnesota giving $10 million, $7 million guaranteed
00:16:47to Stephon Gilmore.
00:16:49Which, look, I think a lot of people, and now J.J. McCarthy being out
00:16:53for the season, which happened as we were doing the pod last time,
00:16:56and now the news is official.
00:16:58He is done for the year on IR.
00:17:00But the Gilmore thing to me signals the fact that Minnesota still thinks
00:17:04they're a fringe playoff team.
00:17:06And adding a veteran like him who, look, doesn't run the way he used to,
00:17:10he's not the same player he was even two or three years ago,
00:17:13but he's still a good player, still a serviceable cornerback,
00:17:17says to me, and has the experience, obviously,
00:17:19with Brian Flores from their time together in New England,
00:17:22that they think that they're in the mix.
00:17:24And if Gilmore can get up to speed quickly,
00:17:27and I know he's keeping in shape, he's always keeping in shape,
00:17:32that there's a chance that he's hitting the ground running,
00:17:34I don't know, we'll see.
00:17:36I just think it was an interesting move for a team that once the McCarthy
00:17:39thing happened and the way people kind of had talked about them,
00:17:42like, oh, they're going to step back this year.
00:17:44They're saying, no, no, we don't believe that.
00:17:46I think that's a good message to send to their players,
00:17:48whether it's the right one, I don't know,
00:17:50but in terms of can they actually be that.
00:17:52But I think it's the message that's certainly well received
00:17:54by the locker room.
00:17:56Yeah, I just look at this game and, you know, again,
00:18:00you mentioned the Gilmore thing.
00:18:01I think, you know,
00:18:02we talked a little bit about it texting back and forth and texting some
00:18:05people around the league.
00:18:06It was kind of a similar sentiment, a good scheme fit.
00:18:08Gilmore's an awesome dude.
00:18:10He still loves to play.
00:18:11He talked to any of those guys that play with him in New England.
00:18:13They adore him.
00:18:14I know Jason McCourty,
00:18:15Devin McCourty had been on my pod multiple times and again,
00:18:18we'll have them on at some point.
00:18:19And they just talk so glowingly.
00:18:21Gailey used to do this.
00:18:22I could trust him to do it.
00:18:24I just think, you know, again, veteran leader in there,
00:18:27they needed another corner.
00:18:29This team's improved a lot.
00:18:30We haven't talked a lot about Minnesota on defense improving.
00:18:33They were much better last year than they expected.
00:18:35And then I know they lose to Neil Hunter, but Van Ginkle is a nice pickup.
00:18:37Like Cashman.
00:18:39I thought I had a really nice year last year,
00:18:40especially in coverage for Houston.
00:18:41And they had him.
00:18:43I just think that this, you know, this unit and this team.
00:18:47If Sam Darnold can at least be.
00:18:49Okay.
00:18:50Solid and eliminate a little bit of the highs, but a lot of the lows,
00:18:53which again, that's part of Sam's game.
00:18:55It's a lot of Ryan Fitzpatrick, you know, backup quarterback, Josh jobs,
00:18:58all that stuff who will, you know,
00:18:59we'll probably talk about here in a moment,
00:19:00but that's just kind of what I look at there.
00:19:02The only other things in this game.
00:19:03And there's not a ton.
00:19:06I just look at, you know,
00:19:08Tyler Huntley somehow like almost made a pro bowl a couple of years ago.
00:19:11And I don't, that was, that was kind of a joke, but like,
00:19:13he was pretty awful and Nick Mullins kind of is who he is.
00:19:16Jaron hall last year, got a chance to start, you know,
00:19:19as a rookie last year as a guy who, Hey,
00:19:21we have a little Zach Wilson PTSD from BYU guy, but like,
00:19:24what's going to happen four or five, two touchdowns.
00:19:27Again, let's see what happens,
00:19:29but Minnesota is going to need a backup quarterback because Sam,
00:19:33unfortunately has never been able to stay healthy for 17 and he's going to
00:19:36be there guys. So there's, there's not too much.
00:19:38I think that was more of an off the field situation.
00:19:40As you mentioned, this game was kind of, you know, no McCarthy,
00:19:44Minnesota and Cleveland apparently went at it big time with joint practices.
00:19:47Everything you heard was like,
00:19:48these teams are beating the F ever living blank out of each other all week.
00:19:52It'll be interesting to see what happens, what happens there.
00:19:55Minnesota thing keeps Sam up right for 17.
00:19:57They have a decent shot at being a French playoff team.
00:19:59Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:00I think the other thing I kind of take away from this is the way Jim Schwartz
00:20:04is continuing to sort of push the envelope with Cleveland's defense.
00:20:08And obviously we know what Minnesota did last year.
00:20:12Flores was throwing blitzes and simulated pressures like never seen before.
00:20:17And I feel like Jim Schwartz might've looked at a little bit of the tape and
00:20:20not that, you know,
00:20:21Schwartz has obviously been around longer and has this great reputation and
00:20:24did a phenomenal job with their defense last year,
00:20:26but they throw a lot of stuff at Cleveland, I mean,
00:20:29at Minnesota.
00:20:30And I'm curious if that's something that, you know,
00:20:33he trusts as they go into the season,
00:20:35because I don't know if there's another level for their defense to get.
00:20:38They were that good last year.
00:20:39In fact,
00:20:40you normally would think there'd be a little bit of regression here,
00:20:42but maybe this is his way of sort of, you know,
00:20:45adding something to the mix and maybe getting the guys again, Hey,
00:20:48we got a little something different last year was great.
00:20:50This is a little something different that we feel like we can use and
00:20:53create more pressure for you guys and, and,
00:20:55and create more turnover opportunities. So that's interesting to me.
00:20:58No, 100%. I'll move to the Baltimore Atlanta. Again,
00:21:01some of the news was off the field, you know, from this situation, you know,
00:21:05it was cleared up today.
00:21:06Rahim Morris spoke with Kay Adams during her, you know,
00:21:08the up and Adams training camp tour about the reason they announced
00:21:11Michael Pennix will not play the rest of the preseason.
00:21:13Neither will Kirk. They, you know,
00:21:16Rahim talked a lot about injury prevention,
00:21:18getting all the reps in practice, these joint practices,
00:21:21they have a big team scrimmage coming up, you know, in the next week.
00:21:23And how that's where he feels like the reps are going to come from for
00:21:27Pennix. They don't want to risk anything. I took that in two ways.
00:21:30They obviously have a lot of confidence,
00:21:32as we've mentioned with Pennix in terms of on-field ability to get it out
00:21:35there and he could play right away.
00:21:36I think that was the biggest appeal of Pennix to a, to a giants, to,
00:21:39to Minnesota specifically who from all reports were desperate to go up and
00:21:44get, you know, Pennix in the draft.
00:21:45It's almost slightly weird that like,
00:21:48they're so concerned about him getting hurt as a backup quarterback. And
00:21:51again, I'm not saying they're wrong.
00:21:53I just think that was the biggest knock on Pennix coming out of the draft
00:21:56was like, he's 24 and has both ACLs, both shoulders.
00:22:01And they're already concerned about him getting hurt in a preseason game.
00:22:04I think they hinted a little bit of like,
00:22:06if he's not going to play with the starters,
00:22:07we don't want to play him because we don't want to risk it,
00:22:09which does make total sense. Again, it was just a bit,
00:22:11just an interesting quote. I thought it was, you know,
00:22:14I just found it interesting. Rahim's obviously in guy.
00:22:17He said, coaches don't get mulligans.
00:22:18We've got to prevent these guys from getting hurt. And again, I,
00:22:21I liked the thought process. I just raised my eyebrow a bit. It was like, Oh,
00:22:24you're already concerned about Pennix potentially getting hurt.
00:22:26If he's already your backup,
00:22:27that's kind of interesting that you're concerned about more of your backup.
00:22:29Then I don't know. I just went back and forth. Did you,
00:22:32did you take anything away from that?
00:22:33And I'll just sit on a couple of the Ravens points.
00:22:35Well, I mean, I just, again,
00:22:36it just ties into the weirdness of drafting him in the first place, right?
00:22:39Like now you're treating him as if he is a starter.
00:22:44And what does that say about Kirk who you invested all that money?
00:22:46And what does it say about the decision to spend the money on Kirk?
00:22:49And then you're already in this mode where, well,
00:22:51we have to protect him too. Like very interesting. I, and look,
00:22:56he's been, as we said, he's been, he's been excellent by all accounts.
00:22:59So what you, what you saw, the little, you saw them look very good,
00:23:03but I think all those kids need to play. I mean, he's not,
00:23:07comparatively speaking, he's not a kid.
00:23:09It's compared to say a Drake may or JJ McCarthy,
00:23:11but I do think you need those NFL reps. It's, it's, I hate to go back there,
00:23:16but I have to like the Drake may six snaps in the opener made no sense.
00:23:19And then they let him play in the second game. And it's like, Oh,
00:23:21he can do some things. Well, yeah. You know what you,
00:23:24if you had played him maybe in the first week,
00:23:26maybe you're already a week further along in this process of him feeling
00:23:29better and more comfortable with what he's doing as opposed to, Oh, now,
00:23:32Hey, he looks better. The decisions are coming quicker. Yeah.
00:23:35You let him play. You let him, you reminded him that he's good at football.
00:23:38He's good at football, right? And I think like, not that Michael Pinnock's,
00:23:41none of these guys don't know it,
00:23:42but sometimes it's nice to go out there and show it. And that,
00:23:44that is interesting to me. The other thing I will say quickly, Roger,
00:23:48Roger Rosengarten, who I, I really like coming out.
00:23:50It looks like he's going to be the starting right tackle for Baltimore.
00:23:53Baltimore has met a habit over the years of drafting and drafting very well and
00:23:58finding guys that have become impact starters for them right away.
00:24:01And it feels like Rosengarten is about to be the next in a long line of,
00:24:06of picks. Did you go, they got them where they got them in the second round?
00:24:09Like, man, all those teams, let them get by. That's how it feels to me.
00:24:13No, look, they got back on the winning track.
00:24:15Obviously historically under Harbaugh,
00:24:17they've been like just insanely good in the preseason. Josh Johnson,
00:24:21Josh Johnson, legend of about 15 NFL franchises. Perfect. 11 of 11,
00:24:26Emory Jones on drafts, the rookie interesting. What, you know,
00:24:28when seven and nine at a hundred yards and a touchdown,
00:24:30just something to mention there, you know, long-term do they view him as someone
00:24:34that can, you know, potentially stick on the roster. Other than that,
00:24:37I didn't date and wait at, you know, big, you know,
00:24:39obviously the big 56 yard touchdown trying to take too much of Saturday,
00:24:42Malik Cunningham. I found interesting that he's, you know, obviously now,
00:24:46you know, he's a playing receiver who was the Louisville, you know,
00:24:49he's a Louisville quarterback who actually did move to receiver that played
00:24:53for the Ravens, but had a couple of catches. So yeah. And again,
00:24:56nothing too much out of Baltimore. I think status quo, they're going into there,
00:24:59you know, they always seem to win the preseason and, you know,
00:25:02it's fun and they seem to develop guys without getting anybody hurt. So,
00:25:05you know, and also the other news,
00:25:07Mark Andrews was involved in a non-serious car accident. I believe on Friday,
00:25:11nothing really there obviously to hit on, thankfully any further,
00:25:15but just does some Ravens, you know,
00:25:17news over the weekend that came out off the field.
00:25:20Let's do a San Francisco and New Orleans next. And I have to stick with
00:25:26quarterbacks, quarterbacks, quarterbacks, right? First of all, Brock Purdy,
00:25:29without his guys looked like, yeah, he wasn't, you know,
00:25:35like that. We know he's a, he's a, he's a great fit for the system.
00:25:40And when you call someone a system quarterback,
00:25:43some people get very upset about that. Well, he's a great fit for that system,
00:25:47but that system relies on having some playmakers around him.
00:25:51And what they rolled out this weekend was not, was not that they didn't have
00:25:56his guys and it kind of looked that way. He looked rusty. Josh Dobbs comes in,
00:26:00Josh Dobbs, I think led three scoring drives and, you know,
00:26:03making a case to be the backup quarterback there. It's Josh Dobbs has been on
00:26:07about 47 teams here. He says we were joking before he came on the air.
00:26:10He's becoming the Josh Johnson of this, not that Josh is still going,
00:26:14but Joshua Dobbs is now becoming that guy where every year he's on a couple
00:26:18teams and he ends up starting games because of a variety of injuries or
00:26:22whatnot. And he's obviously,
00:26:23we know he has the big brain and he's able to process stuff and he's had some
00:26:26great moments. I mean,
00:26:27the game for Minnesota last year was a phenomenal moment for him.
00:26:30He had one with Tennessee the year prior, like he's that guy,
00:26:34but then you see the warts the longer he plays.
00:26:37And then on the flip side for new Orleans,
00:26:39there had been some Spencer Rattler buzz. And again,
00:26:42we've talked about this in our preview and I'm a hiatus at the position.
00:26:45And the more I watched him, the more I liked the way he throws the balls,
00:26:48obviously a five-star recruit, one of the top recruits,
00:26:51if not the top recruit in the country, when he came out, didn't,
00:26:53his college career didn't quite go the way people thought.
00:26:56Obviously got unseated by Caleb Williams in Oklahoma,
00:26:59transferred to South Carolina and solid for South Carolina, but not,
00:27:03not a rock star by any stretch of the imagination. He took a,
00:27:07I don't want to say a step back,
00:27:08but he had a chance to take a step forward and he didn't, he didn't do that.
00:27:11That, that momentum, that buzz,
00:27:15the idea that maybe at some point sooner rather than later,
00:27:17sooner rather than later, he could unseat Derek Carr.
00:27:19I'm going to have to put that on the back burner for now.
00:27:27I almost unmuted myself. There we go. No, there's, there's.
00:27:30I was like, Hey, you're talking, but I don't know.
00:27:33There's always, you know, Jacob Cowling, you know, for San Francisco,
00:27:36fourth round pick, you know, had a, had a big game, you know, 60 plus,
00:27:40you know, total yards, four catches had the big carry as well.
00:27:42Banana shot there. Obviously we'll see what happens with Brandon.
00:27:45I, you can, I've seen day by day, you know, we get,
00:27:47there's different reports and it's been a little quiet.
00:27:49So you kind of always makes you wonder,
00:27:51is that going back to the negotiating table and hammering out one way or
00:27:55another Pittsburgh or San Francisco?
00:27:57Although I'm not sure if I'd want to go to Pittsburgh,
00:27:59if I was Brandon watching the way they played that game right after this,
00:28:02but for sure. Other than that, you know, I guess kind of a,
00:28:06under the radar shout out region, right. You know, five tackles tackled for
00:28:10loss, two passes deflected you know, young player trying to make the roster.
00:28:14So you know, again, you mentioned Rattler wasn't great.
00:28:18We'll see what happens. See how much time he gets there.
00:28:20Car did play obviously in this game on seven and nine.
00:28:22So we'll see how much Rattler plays. You know, in week three, again,
00:28:25you mentioned that Dobbs thing, of course,
00:28:28now my entire timeline is Josh jobs better than Purdy. No, he's not.
00:28:33I think sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves with Brock Purdy.
00:28:35And then there are times I feel like we're making it seem like it's,
00:28:37if he's not a good football player, he obviously is, you know, next game,
00:28:41you know, I'll move to, I mentioned Bill Steelers.
00:28:43I'll get to that one now, man.
00:28:47I would say that the most toxic discussion right now in the NFL on social
00:28:52media is probably Justin Fields still. And it's,
00:28:57it's just incredibly entertaining in a sense of for months, I was told,
00:29:03you know, pretty much from September until I guess about April when,
00:29:07when Caleb Williams was drafted a large portion of the bears fan base and fan
00:29:11bases are on the NFL.
00:29:12Ooh, they should trade back and keep Justin Fields and run it back because he
00:29:15wasn't totally terrible last year. Justin Fields throwing and playing,
00:29:20throwing a ball and, you know,
00:29:21off somebody and catching it and then throwing it again and the whole nine
00:29:24yards and the late fourth quarter stage of a preseason game is not telling me
00:29:29that, that even the Steelers are super high on him. I think that, you know,
00:29:33a lot of the sacks and some of the missed throws, their excitement,
00:29:36the ceiling of Justin Fields is certainly higher than Russell Wilson.
00:29:39You'll get stuff that Russell Wilson simply can't do at 26 or 36,
00:29:43let alone could probably even have done at 26, you know,
00:29:45athletically obviously Russ was incredible player,
00:29:47but the Steelers are kind of telling you that they think Russ is better right
00:29:53now. And Russ has, Russ has been terrible as well.
00:29:56And I think the quarterback, the situation in Pittsburgh is bad.
00:30:00I think the even more concerning part is project Jones was arguably the worst
00:30:04player on the field on Saturday or Sunday, whatever, Saturday night.
00:30:09And that's a problem that these Steelers, you know, then lose, you know,
00:30:13Nate Herbig, you know, probably for the season,
00:30:17they lose Jalen Warren to a hamstring, hopefully ready for week one,
00:30:20but a grade two pulled hamstring to me and the kids that's maybe more like week
00:30:24two or three. He's coming back offensively. Defensively. We know what they are.
00:30:28They're a little older, but they're very good.
00:30:30We know they're going to be well coached.
00:30:31We know they're going to be in every game.
00:30:32They're going to play really hard against good teams.
00:30:34They're going to beat up on the bad teams because so Mike Tomlin does,
00:30:38and we'll get to them in the North preview on Wednesday on Wednesday,
00:30:42but man, like quarterback and offensive line look really, really bad.
00:30:46And even with Brandon Iuke,
00:30:47I've mentioned this in probably the first episode we ever did.
00:30:51I think Brandon Iuke makes them better.
00:30:52I think he just makes San Francisco a lot worse than they are as more than he
00:30:55makes Pittsburgh with this current quarterback and O-line situation any better.
00:30:59So I just, I'd be really concerned if I was a Steelers fan,
00:31:02like their ceiling to me is not very high because their floor is really high,
00:31:06but I don't know that their ceiling is very high, you know,
00:31:08with the current quarterback situation, you know, the way it is,
00:31:12the two biggest notes and we hit on it a little bit, Matt Milano,
00:31:14obviously likely they're out until at least December and knowing Milano,
00:31:18he'll come back in like October and, you know, and we'll see what happens,
00:31:22but losing Poyer, losing Hyde, who were both over the hill,
00:31:27but they were elite communicators. They kind of got everyone organized.
00:31:31Losing Matt Milano for Buffalo is probably what outside of Josh Allen,
00:31:36their best player, or at least one of their most important players.
00:31:39I just don't think it's an easy fix. You know,
00:31:42Teron Johnson, all these guys are really good on Buffalo's defense.
00:31:45They're still good. And, but no Leslie Frazier. Now it's Sean McDermott's,
00:31:48you know, defense again. And now you lose your three play callers on defense.
00:31:52That is, that is tough. Let alone what Milano does in coverage. You know,
00:31:55we've seen it over the years again, games against Miami, the Jets, et cetera.
00:31:58It's so good in coverage. That's obviously a huge, huge deal.
00:32:01And I just, I don't think they can be overstated. And,
00:32:03and from a positive for Buffalo James Cook showed last year,
00:32:06he's a really good back Ray Davis was coming out.
00:32:12I loved him at the senior bowl. You know, I remember, you know,
00:32:14good friend of the show kind of Rogers mentioned how much he was like,
00:32:17this guy is going to be awesome. Just trust me, just trust me. And you know,
00:32:21he's been, he's been that he was really good on Saturday.
00:32:23So positive for Buffalo, you know, no injuries outside of Milano, I guess.
00:32:27And, you know, Ray Davis for Buffalo.
00:32:30Yeah. I just,
00:32:31Ray Davis was the one other than the quarterbacks that I saw at eight carries
00:32:3558 yards, nearly scored a touchdown. He he's like a bowling ball.
00:32:39I mean the power,
00:32:41but there's the shifting this to him at that size and he's low to the ground.
00:32:44And it's just a great compliment, I think, to James Cook and look under,
00:32:49under Joe Brady, when Joe Brady took over for Ken,
00:32:55I met look that I don't even know that's a Joe Brady thing.
00:32:58That's a Sean McDermott thing. And Sean McDermott had feuded with feuded.
00:33:01I put that in air quotes, but it had, you know,
00:33:03traded some barbs with both Dorsey and prior to that,
00:33:06Brian day ball about the kind of team you want it to be.
00:33:09And like they're an outdoor team, Buffalo in December and January, you know,
00:33:14the wind's blowing sideways.
00:33:16So they have this guy with this unbelievable arm and athleticism and it's all
00:33:19built around him. But McDermott just has this in his mindset.
00:33:23Like I want to go back and play this seventies,
00:33:25early eighties football and I want to be able to control the ball at the end
00:33:29of games and run the ball down people's throats.
00:33:31And Brady did that for him last year. He just said, all right,
00:33:34this is what you want. We're going to do it.
00:33:36I still think that their best answer always is Josh Allen.
00:33:39He's the best one, two, three, four, five on the list,
00:33:42but to have another back now that can compliment cook,
00:33:45who I think is going to have a big year is, is pretty, pretty doggone good.
00:33:49What there was one injury, a couple of injury notes, actually from them,
00:33:52Marquez, Valdez, Scantling, who was maybe on the bubble anyway,
00:33:56not really spring neck.
00:33:58And it appears he's going to be out multiple weeks and DeMar Hamlin.
00:34:01They've had a slew of injuries at safety. Taylor raps.
00:34:04The only one that's been healthy and is assured of a starting spot.
00:34:07He is dealing with a hammy didn't play in the game.
00:34:11It appears that's going to be at least another week, maybe two Cole Bishop,
00:34:16the rookie from Utah.
00:34:17We really liked to pay at the senior bowl and was making a push.
00:34:20He had gotten hurt. So they're,
00:34:22they're dealing with all kinds of injuries at the safety spot.
00:34:24So as you mentioned, not only losing Milano employer, letting walk, you know,
00:34:28hide is still out there, whether he's retired or just waiting for another
00:34:31opportunity. I don't know, but so you lose all these communicators.
00:34:34And then some guys that have been in your system,
00:34:36whether you are counting on and like someone in Bishop to sort of take a step
00:34:39up and fill that void that they can't even get out there and practice right
00:34:42now. So it may create a little bit of issues for Buffalo early in the season.
00:34:47All right. Well, you and I have been to see many, many games, football,
00:34:50basketball, baseball, hockey, whatever it is. You know, we've been there.
00:34:54We've seen so many games and obviously we've also been paid in my case to go
00:34:58see games.
00:34:59So I've been fortunate enough to see some of the greatest football games ever
00:35:03played. Patriots Seahawks, Superbowl, Patriots Falcons, Superbowl,
00:35:07but also, you know what? I like to go see the Red Sox. My, my,
00:35:10one of my kids is a huge baseball fan. So we go,
00:35:13her favorite player is not even on the team anymore.
00:35:15He's in triple-A because he's a four-way player. But like, what do we do?
00:35:19We use game time because game time is the best. Absolutely.
00:35:23They have a new feature called game time picks that makes getting tickets to see
00:35:26your favorite teams play live even easier.
00:35:29Game time picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great
00:35:33seats. So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
00:35:36And let me tell you something.
00:35:37I've spent a lot of time searching and searching and now that I have game time,
00:35:41easy as can be. Yeah. It's a, it's an app that I've used many times.
00:35:45Yankee games, Jets games, concerts, did it on,
00:35:48did it on Saturday for Zach Brown band and Kenny Chesney used the game time
00:35:53app. You know, you can go in, you know, view your seat before you buy,
00:35:56make sure that's, you know, obviously the lowest price guarantee,
00:35:59be able to use the, this new super deal app,
00:36:01where part of the app where you can go in and you know,
00:36:04at flash moments you could get, you know, this, this awesome, you know, deal.
00:36:07They obviously nicknamed the super deal and, you know, we'll be attending,
00:36:10you know, many games obviously in the fall and, you know, looking forward to,
00:36:13you know, looking forward to that.
00:36:14We're going to be using game time down at a Georgia Auburn game down,
00:36:18you know, late September. So whether it's college football, you know, baseball,
00:36:21hockey, tennis, you know, concerts, whatever it may be, you know,
00:36:25game time is a, is a place to be.
00:36:27We're going to use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.

00:36:40Download the game, download the game time app today.
00:36:42Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed.
00:36:44Now let's do a next game, Tennessee and Seattle.
00:36:49And I'm not a, look, not a ton to take away.
00:36:52Tennessee's special teams have got a bunch of long field goals in this game.
00:36:56I don't like to talk about kickers, so I'm not going to do that right now.
00:37:00Seattle, no Gino Smith, Sam Howell,
00:37:03obviously we know what Sam did with Washington and there were some really
00:37:05good moments and then sort of faded near the end of the year was going to,
00:37:09well, did get benched.
00:37:10And then Jacoby Brissett somehow got hurt in practice and Sam Howell had to
00:37:13play the last game. How's slinging it all over the place. And he,
00:37:17he has sort of, is he a, is he a poor man's Taylor Heineke,
00:37:24Ryan Fitzpatrick, are they a poor man's, are they a poor man's Sam Howell?
00:37:28I don't know however you want to mix it up,
00:37:30but like he just sort of has that mindset where, all right, I'm going to,
00:37:34I'm going to put that ball there, go get it. You know, I'm going to put it,
00:37:37it's a 50 50. I'm going to trust you to make the play.
00:37:39It looks good when it happens. And then when it doesn't, you go,
00:37:42why did you throw that? You don't have the kind of arm to do that.
00:37:45But I just thought it was interesting that how loose he played.
00:37:48And I still wonder there because of, I mean, you know,
00:37:53the trade chip that they gave up to get them.
00:37:55If Gino gets off to a slow start,
00:37:57how quickly they give the hook and put Sam Howell in there.
00:38:01Yeah. This game's tough. It's a lot of guys we've seen in a lot, you know,
00:38:05Mason Rudolph, Malik Willis, when the quarterback spot, you know,
00:38:08both had some decent moments, both didn't, you know, Kenny McIntosh for,
00:38:12for Seattle showed some stuff.
00:38:17There's not a ton, you know, Elijah Molden made some plays on defense.
00:38:21Not a cornerback says, says Brian Callahan. Yeah.
00:38:28You know, Jalen Harrell, you know, two sacks, two tackles for loss.
00:38:31That was, that was really good to see, obviously, you know,
00:38:34young seventh rounder out of, you know,
00:38:36center seventh rounder out of Tennessee. So give him a shout out there.
00:38:39But again,
00:38:40that's one of those games where the discourse was like this Sam Howell,
00:38:42the starter, like kind of doing the drew lock Gino thing again. And again,
00:38:46I think we always have to remind ourselves it's preseason,
00:38:48but a lot of these guys part of what makes them rosterable every year and
00:38:52competing for backup spots is it's a lot of this, it's a lot of this.
00:38:55And Sam Howell is no exception.
00:38:58A guy who I thought could go number one overall going into that senior year
00:39:01and fell holes of the fourth round.
00:39:03I thought he was not impressive at the senior bowl.
00:39:05And then last year had some good moments and bad moments. So, you know,
00:39:09again, I got to keep your eye on,
00:39:10but I think Gino's very much still started out in Seattle and very much
00:39:14should be.
00:39:15Yeah. Worse, worse places to go.
00:39:16If you're a Seattle, just in terms of like, ah, you know what,
00:39:19maybe we can get some more out of Gino. And if we can't,
00:39:21we have someone who's played games in the NFL, won some games in the NFL.
00:39:25Again, whether it's the long-term answer or not,
00:39:27it gives them at least as they think they're going to be competitive this
00:39:30year, it gives them a, you know,
00:39:31a bridge if they have to into the off season next year, let's go.
00:39:35Let's go giants Houston. Now, you know, we're, I think we're over,
00:39:38please halfway. I think we're at least halfway through these games.
00:39:41Now we actually like Chris Berman on sports centers.
00:39:43In which these games mattered.
00:39:44I think the I'll start in Houston.
00:39:47One kind of nice story, John Banshee big day.
00:39:49I believe it's 60 for six for 67 or eight for 87.
00:39:52I don't know. I'm dyslexic. I might've misread what he did,
00:39:55but watching that game, he's a guy who obviously, you know,
00:39:57had a lot of health and stuff going out, coming out of the draft.
00:39:59You know, it's worth his way back now. He's fully healthy.
00:40:02He is very much, you know,
00:40:04it was always going to be kind of more of a slot guy, but like,
00:40:06it's a really loaded receiver role.
00:40:08You know,
00:40:10John Banshee is your four is like not a bad place to be.
00:40:12And he's shown some nice stuff. I thought, you know,
00:40:14the Texans have taken the approach of playing their starters and,
00:40:16you know, another team that's, you know, gone out, play their starters,
00:40:19CJ and Stingley and Stingley obviously had a big pick and, you know,
00:40:22GM Petrie pick six and all these different things. Again,
00:40:24I'll get to in a second.
00:40:25You know why I'm not quite as impressed is just because of what
00:40:28happened, but.
00:40:30Yeah, I just, you know,
00:40:31met you as a guy who stood out to me and I was like,
00:40:33I was obviously quite impressed, you know,
00:40:35with what he was able to do from a Giants perspective, highs and lows.
00:40:38I thought.
00:40:39I'll start very positively because I think there was a lot of,
00:40:42you know,
00:40:43a lot of good stuff going on in the preseason.
00:40:45You know,
00:40:46a lot of good stuff going on in the preseason.
00:40:48You know,
00:40:49a lot of good stuff going on in the preseason.
00:40:51You know,
00:40:52a lot of good stuff going on in the preseason.
00:40:54You know,
00:40:55a lot of good stuff going on in the preseason.
00:40:57I'll start very positively because I think there was some positives.
00:41:00I thought.
00:41:01The offensive line looks better.
00:41:03I thought the running game was a little bit better.
00:41:05I thought Malik neighbors outside of one play,
00:41:08which he hotdogs a little bit,
00:41:09try to catch with one hand.
00:41:10And I know he got his arm on board a little bit,
00:41:12but like they didn't throw a flag and it looked like he dropped it
00:41:15again, going back and watching it.
00:41:16He was getting held.
00:41:17So I had to bite my words a little bit on that one,
00:41:20but it felt like live.
00:41:21I'm like, dude,
00:41:22get a second hand up as somebody that used to always do the same
00:41:24thing.
00:41:25A lot of times it worked,
00:41:26but when it didn't,
00:41:27we'd immediately get pulled from games.
00:41:28I was interesting,
00:41:29but then obviously makes the,
00:41:30the insane,
00:41:31you know,
00:41:32toe tap back shoulder,
00:41:33great throw from Daniel Jones.
00:41:35If we're being honest,
00:41:36I thought Daniel Jones resolve for what I'll get to in a second was
00:41:40impressive.
00:41:41I thought the end of the second half and into the second quarter,
00:41:43I'm like,
00:41:44you know what?
00:41:45They went down and got 10 points,
00:41:46you know,
00:41:47led the touchdown drive,
00:41:48got way more efficient as the game got on and started making better
00:41:50decisions.
00:41:51I will say.
00:41:52Was very much like,
00:41:54Okay,
00:41:55that's kind of what you're looking for.
00:41:56The first three drives were abominable,
00:41:59horrible,
00:42:00bad to watch the,
00:42:02you know,
00:42:03even the decision.
00:42:04Okay.
00:42:05Yeah.
00:42:06It's a throwaway go ball.
00:42:07It's a horrible place ball.
00:42:08And that's going to get picked every time the NFL in college or in high
00:42:09school.
00:42:10And it's a bad ball.
00:42:11The bar got me at this point.
00:42:12And again,
00:42:13I get the concept of it.
00:42:15Like,
00:42:16Hey,
00:42:17you can't take a safety and throw the ball away there in the end
00:42:18zone.
00:42:19Cause then they get the ball back and you get in trouble for that.
00:42:21That's all well and good.
00:42:22And I fully appreciate Bart.
00:42:23He's obviously very smart.
00:42:24Played in the NFL a long time.
00:42:27That said,
00:42:28when you're a guy who your biggest crutch is health and decision-making
00:42:32when things get a little frazzled,
00:42:34you're getting frazzled like this early in this year.
00:42:36And we too,
00:42:37the preseason.
00:42:39And you're throwing like just abominable.
00:42:41Should I have another pick that got dropped?
00:42:43It was really ugly.
00:42:44And I think the worst thing for the giants this year is Daniel Jones to
00:42:47just be okay.
00:42:48He's either gotta be.
00:42:492022.
00:42:50We're like,
00:42:51Hey,
00:42:52we can build around him or what he basically was on,
00:42:54on Saturday and suck.
00:42:56And like,
00:42:57then you move on.
00:42:58So again,
00:42:59I don't want to be all doom and gloom.
00:43:00I don't think the giant season's now over and Daniel Jones is totally
00:43:02screwed.
00:43:03But that was really concerning that in the year,
00:43:05it wasn't even year six.
00:43:06You know,
00:43:07that like,
00:43:08I think that's right.
00:43:09Yeah.
00:43:10You're six.
00:43:11You're still making these choices of like in a preseason game.
00:43:12That's what you do in your own end zone.
00:43:14Take the safety,
00:43:15throw the ball away,
00:43:16get the body,
00:43:17your hand quicker,
00:43:18like do anything,
00:43:19but what you did there.
00:43:20And that's,
00:43:21that was just tough to watch.
00:43:22Like,
00:43:23geez,
00:43:24man,
00:43:25they're getting steamrolled already.
00:43:26Having spent some time around Brian Dable over the years,
00:43:27not only when he was an assistant in new England,
00:43:29but then when I was working with the NFL network and,
00:43:31and he was in Buffalo and to the giants.
00:43:33I,
00:43:34we know that he has a hot temper.
00:43:36He's he,
00:43:37you mentioned that on the hard knocks this off season,
00:43:39hard knocks.
00:43:40It's,
00:43:41it's actually obviously been a topic of conversation in the New York
00:43:43media for some time.
00:43:44Now,
00:43:45I just want to know what those conversations are like.
00:43:47Does he,
00:43:48when he's watching the film with Daniel or even not,
00:43:50whatever,
00:43:51when he first,
00:43:52like,
00:43:53I would imagine he wants to just strangle him.
00:43:55Like,
00:43:56that's just,
00:43:57we didn't,
00:43:58we put a lot of resources into you.
00:44:00Now we gave you this piece and neighbors,
00:44:02like we didn't,
00:44:03you know,
00:44:04look,
00:44:05we were,
00:44:06we looked at replacing you.
00:44:07We didn't,
00:44:08we couldn't make that trade.
00:44:09We get neighbors for you.
00:44:10Let's,
00:44:11you know,
00:44:12like there's,
00:44:13you're better surrounding people around you.
00:44:14Let's,
00:44:15let's make this work.
00:44:16And for him to play like that has got to be incredibly frustrating.
00:44:22Well,
00:44:23but I would also say almost scary,
00:44:26right?
00:44:27Because now you have to,
00:44:28you know,
00:44:29I know they brought in drew lock and he had the injury or whatever.
00:44:31And,
00:44:32but you're like,
00:44:33okay,
00:44:34if this goes sideways fast,
00:44:35how soon do we pull the plug on?
00:44:37Like,
00:44:38I just think those kinds of performances in a preseason game,
00:44:40they have to trigger these sort of like,
00:44:43if this,
00:44:44then this,
00:44:45then this,
00:44:46and then I'm probably putting my place up for sale.
00:44:47Cause it's probably going to be out of a job.
00:44:48Like,
00:44:49that's just,
00:44:50and to your point,
00:44:51like him being 17 touchdown passes and eight to 10 interceptions,
00:44:5711 interceptions and rushing for 450 yards and completing 62% of his
00:45:03passes.
00:45:04And they go eight,
00:45:05nine,
00:45:06seven,
00:45:07and 10.
00:45:08That puts them in a spot where like,
00:45:09well,
00:45:10I don't know.
00:45:11Can you convince yourself that one more year or,
00:45:14you know,
00:45:15and then you're now you've won some more games and now you're further back
00:45:17in the drafts.
00:45:18And then,
00:45:19you know,
00:45:20it's a little harder.
00:45:21It takes a little more capital to move up.
00:45:22And you're,
00:45:23you know,
00:45:24your roster is far from perfect to begin with.
00:45:25Like,
00:45:26it's just,
00:45:27I would imagine that there was a little period there where like,
00:45:28Oh boy,
00:45:29we're,
00:45:30we're going to do this again.
00:45:31Yeah.
00:45:32It's just,
00:45:33it's tough.
00:45:34You watch.
00:45:35It's like Daniel Jones was 11 of 18,
00:45:36one 38,
00:45:37two touch and two interceptions,
00:45:38definitely not two touchdowns.
00:45:39No,
00:45:40but he started two to six with two interceptions.
00:45:41That should have been three.
00:45:42And you're like,
00:45:43well,
00:45:44then he finished what?
00:45:45Nine of nine to 12,
00:45:46you know,
00:45:47for 120 yards.
00:45:48Like that's where it's tough where it's like,
00:45:50okay,
00:45:51if you're a giants fan,
00:45:52are you looking for positivity out of Daniel Jones?
00:45:54You're saying you finished the second quarter was so much better.
00:45:56He looked so much more composed,
00:45:58making much more big boy throws.
00:46:00Let's build on it next week.
00:46:01But it's so hard to get that first six throws out of your head.
00:46:04And it's like anybody watching anybody looking,
00:46:07it's just like,
00:46:08geez,
00:46:09man,
00:46:10like this,
00:46:11it's embarrassing.
00:46:12Like you send everyone into a,
00:46:13you know,
00:46:14a full spin there.
00:46:15It's like some of the giants guys looked really good.
00:46:17And that's great.
00:46:18But season's going to come down to the quarterback and we'll get to it.
00:46:22When do the NFCS,
00:46:23but I have serious doubts.
00:46:25He can get them to where they need to be.
00:46:27All right,
00:46:28let's stay on the quarterback train with Miami and Washington,
00:46:31both Tua.
00:46:33We've got one series and was five for five and look crisp as hell,
00:46:36even though he didn't have all his pieces.
00:46:38Shout out Brock Purdy.
00:46:40You know,
00:46:41a little bit different there.
00:46:42And then of course,
00:46:43Jane Daniels,
00:46:44who was officially named the starting quarterback here.
00:46:45We're taping this on Monday.
00:46:46He was named Monday morning as a starting quarterback.
00:46:48Not that that surprises any of us.
00:46:50I think the moment they drafted him,
00:46:51we knew that it was built for him,
00:46:52unless he fell on his face,
00:46:54that he was going to be the starting quarterback,
00:46:55but he looked really good too.
00:46:57And the thing that's that,
00:46:59that has impressed me about him so far is that smooth,
00:47:04the ability to throw the ball down the field.
00:47:07Like that wasn't just an LSU college thing.
00:47:10Like he's at least thus far,
00:47:12he's brought that to the NFL.
00:47:13He looks,
00:47:14it looks so easy for him.
00:47:15And he has such perfect touch on those throws.
00:47:18It's,
00:47:19you know,
00:47:20as someone who still likes it,
00:47:21when teams throw the ball downfield,
00:47:22having had to watch the Patriots for the last couple of years up close and
00:47:24personal where they,
00:47:25they couldn't push the ball beyond 10 yards down the field without
00:47:27something disastrous happening to it.
00:47:29Like it just,
00:47:30it's impressive to watch and it's sort of made me reconsider their
00:47:33ceiling a little bit as a team this year.
00:47:36Cause I'm just starting to believe more and more,
00:47:39like he might just come in and be really good right away.
00:47:41And I don't know that I would have said that certainly two months ago and
00:47:45maybe even two weeks ago,
00:47:47but I'm starting to,
00:47:48and again,
00:47:49not trying to overreact to preseason,
00:47:50but it just feels like he continues to build on this process and continues
00:47:54to show like,
00:47:55Oh,
00:47:56blitz is coming.
00:47:57I didn't see it the first time.
00:47:58Second time around,
00:47:59I got it.
00:48:00I figured it out.
00:48:01Like,
00:48:02and that's the kind of stuff that you just,
00:48:03you'd like to see from a young quarterback.
00:48:04You learn from your mistake and it doesn't happen again.
00:48:05Don't be the error repeater.
00:48:06And thus far,
00:48:07it feels like that's the way Daniel's is trending right now.
00:48:09Yeah.
00:48:10You're not buying Jeff Driscoll.
00:48:12I trained.
00:48:13Near 14.
00:48:15Now the only other thing from this game,
00:48:17I wanted to kind of comment on it.
00:48:19Dolphins seem to love river.
00:48:21Great craft.
00:48:22He did get hurt.
00:48:23It seems like the practice,
00:48:25some type of upper body injury,
00:48:26not too sure on the details there,
00:48:28but you know,
00:48:29had the nice catch in the corner of the end zone.
00:48:31Devon,
00:48:32we thought we'll talk about this with Brice Hall.
00:48:34When we get to the AFC East and the jets have done a lot of this,
00:48:36but,
00:48:37you know,
00:48:38Devon,
00:48:3918 running,
00:48:40you know,
00:48:41go routes on the outside and some of those different things.
00:48:42Really exciting.
00:48:43I think 18 and Hall are two of the best young backs in the league.
00:48:45Very different players,
00:48:46but,
00:48:47you know,
00:48:48both very good players.
00:48:49I thought one of the only big kind of big news out of this game.
00:48:51Kind of came today.
00:48:52It was two of the tongue of my lows on,
00:48:54on the Leviton show,
00:48:55I believe.
00:48:56And.
00:48:57Talked a lot about his relationship with Brian Flores.
00:48:59And.
00:49:00My kind of takeaway from it.
00:49:03It's there's not much.
00:49:04I think this is very well-documented information.
00:49:06None of that's new.
00:49:07I think anyone that covered the NFL or is around.
00:49:09Yeah.
00:49:10Anyone that covered the dolphins or was around anyone,
00:49:12the NFL knew those two did not see eye to eye.
00:49:15I don't have a problem with Brian Flores doing what he did.
00:49:19And I don't have a problem with two of feeling the way he did.
00:49:21Like.
00:49:22Two is a guy that everyone needs to be coached differently.
00:49:24We talk about this all the time in the NFL or any sport,
00:49:26you know,
00:49:27kids,
00:49:28high school,
00:49:29college,
00:49:30young kids,
00:49:31the NFL,
00:49:32some guys need to be built up.
00:49:33Some guys need to be motivated.
00:49:34Some guys need to be humbled.
00:49:36Some guys don't.
00:49:37Two.
00:49:38It's a guy obviously needs to be.
00:49:39Carefully coached.
00:49:41Carefully spoken to and making sure he's filled with confidence and all
00:49:44these different things.
00:49:46She was not getting with Brian Flores and other guys can take some of
00:49:48that stuff that Brady's and something.
00:49:50Only Tom Brady,
00:49:51but a lot of these guys,
00:49:52you know,
00:49:53want to be coached a little bit differently.
00:49:54So again,
00:49:55not too much to take out of that.
00:49:56I just think that it's an interesting,
00:49:58it was interesting.
00:49:59That came out again.
00:50:00It's funny.
00:50:01You know,
00:50:02I think it's funny because again,
00:50:03after a couple of years where floors is starting to finally get his name
00:50:05back in positive,
00:50:06you know,
00:50:07maybe it's got to be a coach down the line again,
00:50:08even amidst some of the stuff that went on two years ago.
00:50:10Yeah.
00:50:11We'll we'll see,
00:50:12but it was just interesting.
00:50:13That came up as well.
00:50:14I'll just tag on.
00:50:15I'll tag on that.
00:50:16Cause I commented on,
00:50:17on,
00:50:18on social media.
00:50:19When I saw the,
00:50:20the clip.
00:50:21And I would just say that.
00:50:23Brian surprised me.
00:50:24Having.
00:50:26Covered Brian as an assistant coach here and sort of seeing his rise
00:50:29for the Patriots organization.
00:50:30And then when he became the de facto DC and they win a Superbowl.
00:50:35The way the players talked about him,
00:50:38how he was very blunt with them,
00:50:40but there was,
00:50:41was always.
00:50:42There was always love.
00:50:43You know,
00:50:44they always felt like.
00:50:45He was asking about their families.
00:50:47He knew their wives names.
00:50:48You know,
00:50:49the wife's name,
00:50:50the kids names,
00:50:51like the whole thing,
00:50:52like grandma was sick.
00:50:53Like he knew all that stuff.
00:50:54It was important to him.
00:50:55And I remember when he left.
00:50:56Being asked on NFL network.
00:50:58Like,
00:50:59how do you think he's going to fare?
00:51:00And my thought was.
00:51:01Of all the guys that have left Bill's tree.
00:51:04I feel like Brian is the guy most suited to be himself and not be anyone
00:51:08else.
00:51:09Not try to be Bill.
00:51:10I'm Brian Flores.
00:51:11You know,
00:51:12I'm a tough guy,
00:51:13but I have the side to me that I want to show my players that they
00:51:17understand it too.
00:51:18And it's sort of where we're getting with all these coaches now,
00:51:20right?
00:51:21There's a little touchy feely part of it.
00:51:22And then he goes there and he doesn't do that at all.
00:51:24And he basically.
00:51:25He sort of.
00:51:27I know Bill.
00:51:28I know this is how it went.
00:51:29And I,
00:51:30he just became that he became sort of that sort of similar coach.
00:51:33And I was disappointing just because I thought.
00:51:37And maybe he will in his second opportunity,
00:51:39be his own man.
00:51:40I don't think he was his own man,
00:51:42or I think he tried too hard to kind of go down that line.
00:51:45Maybe when things started to get away from him,
00:51:47that's what he resorted to because he saw it work in new England.
00:51:49It didn't work for him.
00:51:51I mean,
00:51:52granted he was a 500 coach there,
00:51:53but like,
00:51:54you know,
00:51:55nobody was happy there.
00:51:56There's,
00:51:57I mean,
00:51:58nobody was happy there.
00:51:59So yeah,
00:52:00it was interesting that it came out and hopefully Brian does get another
00:52:03chance.
00:52:04And hopefully,
00:52:05as I said,
00:52:06he's a different guy the next time around.
00:52:07Yeah,
00:52:08I got,
00:52:09yeah,
00:52:10I think I have,
00:52:11I have three on my docket.
00:52:12You have two more remaining Mike,
00:52:13if I'm not mistaken.
00:52:14Yeah.
00:52:15Yep.
00:52:16So I'm going to go Jets,
00:52:17Panthers,
00:52:18because I think you had the least meaning of probably any of the games
00:52:20of the entire weekend.
00:52:21The jets have played.
00:52:22The jets dressed only.
00:52:23They didn't dress their top 28 players.
00:52:25Last week.
00:52:26They didn't dress their top 32 players this week.
00:52:28And then two or three of the guys that I was most excited to see all got
00:52:31hurt.
00:52:32Early parts of the game.
00:52:33So the biggest takeaway from the jets,
00:52:35Will McDonald.
00:52:36Spin cycle,
00:52:37great sack,
00:52:38get another pressure.
00:52:39He's a guy who.
00:52:40I miss all this on Reddit stuff.
00:52:42Well,
00:52:43McDonald's the 15th overall pick in the draft last year,
00:52:45and they let Bryce off walk.
00:52:46Who they hope he can step into the breast up for all.
00:52:48He's had a really up and down camp in terms of start off.
00:52:50I was,
00:52:51I was at the first pad of practice and I'm like,
00:52:53geez,
00:52:54man,
00:52:55I don't know.
00:52:56Didn't put on any weight.
00:52:57What's what do we got here?
00:52:58And as camp's gone on,
00:52:59he's starting to build confidence.
00:53:00He had a really nice week against Washington.
00:53:02Really nice spin move.
00:53:03Didn't play great against Washington,
00:53:04but had some,
00:53:05a couple of really nice moves.
00:53:06And it was like,
00:53:07they,
00:53:08you know,
00:53:09teams aren't just quick game.
00:53:10Like he's going to get home.
00:53:11It was not a really nice week in Carolina.
00:53:13It was kind of quiet,
00:53:15but didn't,
00:53:16you know,
00:53:17had a nice week in Carolina.
00:53:18And then has this unbelievable spin move,
00:53:20which is his patented move.
00:53:21The biggest thing for Will McDonald going forward is going to be,
00:53:24he's got an eight plus plus level spin move,
00:53:26both spinning inside,
00:53:27spinning outside.
00:53:28And if he's got extreme bendability,
00:53:30if he can master one other move,
00:53:32one counter to that spin move,
00:53:33it's good.
00:53:34He's going to have a chance to be a really nice pass rush in this
00:53:37league.
00:53:38I don't know if they'll ever be a full three down play.
00:53:40I don't know if they'll ever be this like dominant edge that we're
00:53:43all,
00:53:44you know,
00:53:45everyone who kind of wants,
00:53:46but like to have a chance to hit a lot of quarterbacks,
00:53:48a lot of times.
00:53:49And again,
00:53:50if he can just find that one,
00:53:51he's got,
00:53:52he's got shown it a little bit,
00:53:53but if he can show,
00:53:54you know,
00:53:55well,
00:53:56maybe take some of that Bryce huff,
00:53:57go step,
00:53:58go step,
00:53:59rip,
00:54:00move that Bryce is mastered.
00:54:01Should be watching that on loop.
00:54:02Got lots of that on loop and he should have seen it in person last
00:54:05year and whatever,
00:54:06or hit a different,
00:54:07you know,
00:54:09hit a swim move,
00:54:10hit same type of counter to that spin.
00:54:11You know,
00:54:12he'll be in a good spot.
00:54:13I thought for Carolina,
00:54:14again,
00:54:15there's not a ton.
00:54:16Terrace Marshall had a nice week.
00:54:18He's a guy who I liked a lot coming out of college and that's not
00:54:21really been any of that guys.
00:54:22And then Dylan Johnson,
00:54:23the rookie had a really nice day.
00:54:25I think 18 carries 83 yards,
00:54:27finished with a touchdown.
00:54:28It was a really weird end of that game.
00:54:30Or like Jeff,
00:54:31we're kicking field goals,
00:54:32Brandon Codrington,
00:54:33the jets,
00:54:34you know,
00:54:35he was returning every punt and kickoff for like 60 yards and then
00:54:38they would settle for three.
00:54:39And then the Panthers couldn't score at all.
00:54:41There was a million penalties.
00:54:42Again,
00:54:43nobody of significance really played.
00:54:44And then Dave can,
00:54:45Alice just like ran the ball.
00:54:4610 seconds left down to touchdowns.
00:54:48It was really weird.
00:54:49But regardless,
00:54:51he had a nice week.
00:54:52So,
00:54:53you know,
00:54:54again,
00:54:55not too much to take out of that game,
00:54:56but will McDonald's probably the most important player that played.
00:54:57And I thought had the best night in terms of like,
00:54:59he needed that badly.
00:55:00And again,
00:55:01today in practice,
00:55:02we're talking 36 hours after that game.
00:55:04I believe had three or four sacks today in practice,
00:55:06got Aaron Rodgers twice in one play,
00:55:08which I don't know how that's even possible,
00:55:11but he did.
00:55:12And again,
00:55:13that's probably the biggest takeaway for,
00:55:14from just Panthers.
00:55:15I'll just give a shout out to a third round linebacker out of
00:55:17Kentucky,
00:55:18Trevin Wallace,
00:55:19who had a four tackles in that game,
00:55:21but also had an interception of a ride during the joint practices.
00:55:24And just.
00:55:25Here's the guy that I was intrigued with,
00:55:27right?
00:55:28There's,
00:55:29I think there's some question about his overall football sense,
00:55:31but there's no denying the athleticism and the want to like he wants to
00:55:34be great.
00:55:35So nice to see him sort of just.
00:55:37You know,
00:55:38develop here a little bit,
00:55:39have some momentum as he goes into the final preseason week.
00:55:42And maybe,
00:55:43you know,
00:55:44he can make an impact on that team at some point,
00:55:46you know,
00:55:47work himself into the rotation.
00:55:48How about we do in the Arizona.
00:55:49Again,
00:55:50not a huge amount of takeaways.
00:55:53The one takeaway for me,
00:55:55because of how he played in week one and the buzz that he got in week
00:55:58one was tackle Christian Jones out of the university of Texas.
00:56:02Fifth round pick who made big dude.
00:56:04Like there was again,
00:56:05as you go through the draft process,
00:56:07there's these ebbs and flows where all of a sudden this guy's hot.
00:56:09And you're like,
00:56:10Oh,
00:56:11he might be a second round pick.
00:56:12And then,
00:56:13you know,
00:56:14he ends up going where you thought he was going to go in the beginning in
00:56:15the fifth round,
00:56:16but he had a really good first week.
00:56:17And.
00:56:18Arizona is pretty.
00:56:19For Arizona.
00:56:20They're pretty well set on the,
00:56:21on the offensive line,
00:56:22but you're thinking like,
00:56:23all right,
00:56:24you can develop another young tackling a Paris Johnson on one side.
00:56:26You end up with this guy on the other side after,
00:56:28you know,
00:56:29Jonah Williams,
00:56:30his contract is up in a couple of years or even before then.
00:56:32Cause it's,
00:56:33it's not too much money.
00:56:34And then he just was a debacle in this game.
00:56:36Got beat a couple of times.
00:56:38Worse yet three holding calls on three straight.
00:56:42Plays.
00:56:43Now.
00:56:44You would say to yourself,
00:56:45maybe the ref might want to just tuck the flag away.
00:56:47No one came to see you,
00:56:48but if you go back and watch,
00:56:50I don't think he got jobs on any of those.
00:56:52I think he earned the call.
00:56:54So like.
00:56:55You know,
00:56:56it's not a huge big picture thing for Arizona.
00:56:58Just somebody there.
00:56:59They're,
00:57:00they're hoping to develop and maybe can be a starter for them down the
00:57:02line.
00:57:03And just took a,
00:57:04he took a big step back in that game.
00:57:06Yeah.
00:57:07Again,
00:57:08there's not too much Laquan Treadwell.
00:57:09I don't have a seven catch catch.
00:57:12You know what?
00:57:13I got to say,
00:57:14hands up.
00:57:15I thought he was going to be good.
00:57:16I thought Treadwell was going to be good.
00:57:18I was,
00:57:19I was,
00:57:20I was so wrong.
00:57:21I mean,
00:57:22he's,
00:57:23well,
00:57:24he's been everywhere.
00:57:25I mean,
00:57:26I've been watching him for like a brief second.
00:57:27Yeah.
00:57:28It's been everywhere.
00:57:29It's like he's been everywhere,
00:57:30but can't stick anywhere.
00:57:31No.
00:57:32Yeah.
00:57:33It's.
00:57:34It's tough.
00:57:35Cam Thomas,
00:57:36you know,
00:57:37two sacks.
00:57:38He's a guy.
00:57:39Obviously San Diego state,
00:57:40you know,
00:57:41two years ago,
00:57:42it took him a third round.
00:57:43He had two sacks,
00:57:44you know,
00:57:45on the day.
00:57:46He's a guy who I had high hopes for.
00:57:47I'd written a lot about the senior bowl and,
00:57:48you know,
00:57:49I was pretty excited about him.
00:57:50You know,
00:57:51he had his three sacks in his career.
00:57:52You know,
00:57:53he's a,
00:57:54he's a,
00:57:55he's a,

01:03:11he's a,
01:03:12if he can stay healthy. Maybe similar to Caleb Farley, like maybe one day he'll be a number one
01:03:17and it just hasn't happened for him. He was pretty active in that game, six tackles.
01:03:22Just, I don't know, Dallas has had a good history of sort of developing guys, finding talent in
01:03:31places, whether it be in a draft or free agency or in a case like this with a trade. I just,
01:03:35he's someone I'm going to keep an eye on because I think maybe that might be a pretty good landing
01:03:39spot for him and a chance to sort of, you know, reestablish his career. Granted, it's again,
01:03:44he's only in year three, so it's not like he doesn't have a shot at a career, but it hasn't
01:03:48gone nearly the way I think most people expect it when you get drafted. All right, let's go,
01:03:53let's go to the Battle of Los Angeles, the Rams and the Chargers and oh, hey,
01:03:58stop me if you heard this before. I'm going to talk about the quarterbacks and I'll start with.
01:04:02You're not going to talk about Cortland and Long Island legend national champion,
01:04:06J.J. Lapp catching a 50 yard touchdown. I'll let you do that. I'll let you do that because I know
01:04:10how important that is to you. Easton Stick will make a throw during the course of a game as he's
01:04:20played, obviously, because Justin's been hurt in previous years or in a preseason game and you go,
01:04:27all right, like. That's an NFL quarterback. He's got he's got NFL quarterback tools.
01:04:33Can he be more consistent? And the answer is no, he cannot be more consistent. He was.
01:04:39I want to say train recce, but it was that was an ugly performance for him.
01:04:42I think performance for him. And I will say this. Jim Harbaugh said very simply,
01:04:49we need to see improvement from Easton. That was his quote after the game. We need to see
01:04:53improvement from Easton. And look, the injury from Herbert, as you mentioned, I think in our last pod
01:04:59is it is this going to be something that just because he rested, it's going to be fine. He's
01:05:03not going to have any more issues like this as you call it now. And he'll be good to go when he when
01:05:07he rolls into the season. Or is this something that's going to linger and maybe cost him some
01:05:11games at some point during the season because it's not healed? That means that Easton Stick
01:05:16right now is the guy. And, you know, the Chargers have been this sneaky pick like everybody thinks
01:05:21how they finally got a good coach. And even though they lost some of their talent and some of their
01:05:24talent in other spots is older, that they're going to be a playoff team. I mean, you want to
01:05:29talk about just totally blowing that out of the water. If Easton Stick has to play, you know,
01:05:34more than a quarter here or a quarter there. I mean, that's the case. Either that or Harbaugh
01:05:39is just going to turn around. He's going to run on first down, second down and third down.
01:05:43One thing I want to hit on, you know, something about Harbaugh and we go to the Raiders quickly
01:05:47is so the staff today and I don't want to miscredit whoever it was. I don't remember
01:05:52exactly what it was, but it's 2.8 yards pre-contact this preseason. The offensive
01:05:58line for the Chargers looks as good as I build it to be. Everything else has not been that great,
01:06:03but the Chargers offensive line is moving people in the run game. And I think they're going to
01:06:08lean on that a lot this year, you know, obviously from an offensive coordinator and head coach
01:06:12perspective, they are lockstep that Ravens identity. We're going to run the football
01:06:16Michigan Ravens. Like we are, they are going to run the football with Todd, but they have moved
01:06:20people in the run game. They last year were one of the worst offensive lines, pre running backs,
01:06:24pre contacts, like how quickly they were getting hit this year, you know, against two preseason
01:06:29games. It's not me too much of it, but that's one takeaway. It's like from positive, the offensive
01:06:33line looks legitimately very good again, preseason, but let's see. And then the flip side for the Ram
01:06:38Stetson Bennett goes wire to wire again in this game. And Jimmy Garoppolo is being paid to be the,
01:06:44well, not getting paid a lot, but he's supposed to be the number two quarterback. But of course
01:06:48he's suspended for the first two games. So they're getting Bennett who basically missed all
01:06:52of last year. Plenty of work here. Went wire to wire in one, went wire to wire here. He is,
01:07:01obviously there was some improvement. He threw four picks in the first game.
01:07:04He looked a little bit more comfortable. He made some, he made some big boy throws in this game,
01:07:10but to me, I don't know how you go into weeks one and two without Garoppolo
01:07:16as Stetson Bennett, as your primary backup, like, because as we know, Matthew Stafford
01:07:21has had the injury issues. In fact, is dealing with a hamstring right now.
01:07:25And sort of, you're getting mixed messages on what it was. Oh, it's no big deal. And now it's like,
01:07:29well, we don't know yet. So I don't know if they're going to have to comb the waiver wire
01:07:35or make a trade for some money, you know, before cut down day, just to feel a little bit more
01:07:39comfortable about that spot. Even if, again, it might just be for two weeks, but it does feel
01:07:45like they're there because of the suspension and because of how far Bennett has to come.
01:07:50They're a little bit behind the eight ball at that spot. Yeah. The last game I kind of want
01:07:54to hit on here. And again, I just shouting at JJ because Cortland receiver catching a bomb game.
01:08:00Very cool. Very cool. It was awesome to see Cortland guys, you know, kind of all over there.
01:08:05We'll finish it. We'll finish in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. There's a couple of things we'll hit
01:08:10on here. And I'll kind of leave you to hit on Mac more. So I thought Mac looked a lot more like
01:08:15the rookie in the beginning of second year, Matt Jones, who played comfortable, confident,
01:08:19was making throws. He had a really nice scene ball, obviously touchdown. And just like
01:08:23efficient, accurate, you know, obviously 16 to 23, 200 plus yards, 9.1 in a 10, you know,
01:08:29two touchdowns, the couple of guys in Tampa Bay, I want to shout out, you know, before we get there,
01:08:33because other than that, from Tampa Bay perspective, there's a lot of Kyle Trask and,
01:08:37you know, we got some Bucky Irving. I know you were mentioned to him and, you know,
01:08:39in our previous pod, you know, Cody Thompson had a nice day. Jose Ramirez, three sacks,
01:08:46pretty damn good. You know, six rounder, I believe a year ago. So, you know, an interesting name,
01:08:52you know, to watch there. Other than that, for me, Jag's perspective, not a ton. Austin Trammell
01:08:58had a nice day, obviously. Saw some Tank Bigsby. I love Tank early in his career at Auburn. And
01:09:04got kind of worse and worse, it felt like. And good to see him at least playing. We'll see if
01:09:09there's anything there, obviously. Again, as I mentioned with Mack, making too much of it. No,
01:09:13I don't want to. But I do want to say, like, he was never as bad as he looked the last 18 months.
01:09:19And he was never maybe as good as he looked the first 18 months. He looked good the other day.
01:09:23And I will say, and I know Patriot fans probably won't want to hear this. And I don't know if
01:09:29Jets fans will agree with me or whatever. Trevor Lawrence misses two games, the Jags will be okay.
01:09:33For two games, I think Mack will figure it out with Doug P and some of his talent around him.
01:09:38What's your take on Mack as we kind of wrap this, you know, our first Monday recap on?
01:09:43Yeah, you know, it's interesting. I was texting with Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald,
01:09:47and he was watching last night. And he was, for whatever reason, he was watching
01:09:52the Tampa Patriots game for Mack's rookie year. So Brady coming into Foxborough, the rainy night,
01:09:57the whole thing. Mack completed 19 straight passes in that game. And it was, yeah, okay,
01:10:02there were checkdowns. But it was also just like smart reads, well-placed footballs, like that,
01:10:06obviously not pushing the ball a ton. But I remember, as you went through the first three
01:10:11months of that season after, and then training camp for five months, whatever it was, being like,
01:10:17they're in a pretty good place. Like, he definitely has a ceiling as an athlete and,
01:10:23you know, a ceiling as an arm. But I thought, oh, he'll, you know, there'll be, maybe he can
01:10:27make his arm 5% stronger. Like, that's not crazy to think and like, give that a little bit more
01:10:31juice and some balls and outside the numbers, you know, the come, the deep come backwards,
01:10:36things like that. And obviously kind of, I mean, the narrative is it went downhill starting in
01:10:42Buffalo when they won the game in Buffalo in the storm, but he only threw the three balls.
01:10:47But I thought he had a, he had, he played a terrific game against Indianapolis in the second
01:10:52half after a couple of bad interceptions in the first half. And I remember thinking to myself,
01:10:55like, okay, like, it wasn't perfect. That was coming off a buy. You were the number one seed
01:11:02in all of the AFC at that point in mid-December. But like, I liked the bounce back. I liked the
01:11:07fact that he was able to go in the locker room and sort of settle himself. He had Josh McDaniels,
01:11:11obviously, as his offensive scorer and help walk him through it. But like, he played much better
01:11:15in the second half and had him in position. And in fact, Dante Hightower and friend of the pod,
01:11:19Devin McCourty, one of them, I still don't know which one, missed a run fit. And Jonathan Taylor
01:11:25took it 55 yards to the house. And then the comeback was over. That was late in the game,
01:11:29but it was like, okay. And then he had a huge game against Jacksonville, who was a, you know,
01:11:33a dumpster fire in late December. Scored 20 something points against the Bills and looked
01:11:39like they just couldn't stop the Bills. The Bills, that was a game, the Bills was back-to-back games
01:11:43where the Bills didn't punt against the Patriots, the final regular season game. And then the first
01:11:47playoff game. And I thought in the playoff game, he was the best player on the field for the
01:11:52Patriots, which again, they got smoked. So it's damning him, I guess, with faint praise, but like
01:11:57he showed up, he was competitive. Like he ran, he got a couple of first downs he ran for, like he
01:12:03was ball, he was doing his best, like he was doing his best to keep them in the game. And I thought,
01:12:07all right, you're going to build on this. And obviously we know what happened, Patricia and
01:12:10Judge and just immediate dysfunction and not liking the system and then being too vocal about
01:12:15it and not being super coachable. And Bailey Zappi steps in, has two games, then he gets
01:12:21Zappi fever, just get benched on national TV by Bill in Chicago, just poorly against Chicago,
01:12:29you know, on a Monday night or Sunday night game, which was poorly handled and helped, I think,
01:12:33contribute to his slide. And he never got out of it. And last year, obviously Bill O'Brien's in and
01:12:38you think, all right, they can sort of rebuild them. Bill's the, you know, it's the kind of
01:12:41system that Mack wants to run and they just, he never got it back. And to see him go there,
01:12:47I think he needed a fresh start. I remember people saying, well, no, you keep him and you
01:12:52still draft Drake May or Jaden Daniels, whoever he was there at the top of the draft. I'm like,
01:12:55no, he has to go. He has to go because the fan base doesn't accept him anymore.
01:13:00Or at least most of them don't. And he has to go because I don't know that he,
01:13:04I don't even, he doesn't, he didn't want to be here anymore for good reason. It was dysfunctional.
01:13:08It didn't work. And he felt that friction with the fan base. And there was a lot that fell on
01:13:13his own shoulders. I'm not absolving him of the blame of what happened. We've kind of been over
01:13:17this, but Bill didn't handle it the way Bill should have handled it. And I think it's in part
01:13:23why Bill's no longer the Patriots coach. But he's got an opportunity there to rebuild his career.
01:13:29And he says, whatever happens with him, he's probably going to be around the league for a
01:13:34long time because he is smart. He'll pick up stuff. He'll still go do stupid things in the
01:13:40field. He'll still try to make a cross body throw that he's physically not capable of.
01:13:44But if he settles into that, the understanding, like Jacoby Brissett right now, Jacoby knows what
01:13:50he is. You're a bridge quarterback. You're a backup quarterback. You're someone who,
01:13:56yeah, if we have to go do for two or three games, as you said with Mack in Jacksonville,
01:14:00you'll be fine. You'll be okay. The longer you play, the more the warts show.
01:14:05So I think he's got a chance to be in the league for 10, 12, whatever years, if that's what he
01:14:11wants, if that's if he wants to accept sort of this is who you are and that first whatever three
01:14:18months wasn't really a true representative of you. But as you mentioned, the last three months
01:14:21weren't either. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how he builds on this and can he regain some of
01:14:26what made him a really nice prospect in a lot of people's eyes and a good young player in this
01:14:31league. I just think that he lost a little bit of that, got a little too much. We don't talk about
01:14:36it too much, but he got a little too Baker Mayfield-ish where like you're not quite that
01:14:39athletic buddy. You're not your arms, not that quite that big. But that's not why anyone thinks
01:14:44you're a good player. There's no need to do some of that. So we just spent through 15 games an hour
01:14:50and 10 minutes, which I find pretty impressive. Again, next on Wednesday, me and Mike will be
01:14:56back. We're going to be doing NFC North, NAFC North. If there's things you want to DM or comment
01:15:04on the pod and tell me and Mike, hey, we like this. We want you guys to keep doing more of this.
01:15:08The show's evolving. The show's, you know, we're six episodes in now, which has been awesome. So
01:15:12or seven episodes, I believe. So yeah, it was fun doing our first recap. I feel like mentally
01:15:18exhausted, but well, it's so funny, too, because just with the nature of preseason, you see all
01:15:24these quarterbacks and it's like, oh, yeah, him. And then you're like, I look, I admit I'm hyper
01:15:29focused on quarterbacks at all times because if you don't have a good one, you're in you're in a
01:15:33world of hurt. So, yeah, it's a big time. As always, we thank you for listening. Please like,
01:15:40subscribe, leave reviews. It's very important, helpful to us as we continue to try to build
01:15:45the all 30, 32, the all 32 pod, as he said, see that the fatigue finally hit there at an hour and
01:15:5210 minutes in the pod. Again, thank you very much for listening and we'll see you again on Wednesday.
