00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin III, James White, Field Yates, Mena Kimes.
00:13All right.
00:14So first play we're going to look at, second and two, one of the Patriots' first offensive
00:17plays.
00:18What's going on, everyone?
00:23Mike Kadlik, Taylor Kyles here for CLNS Media on a new edition of Hats Daily here on the
00:30CLNS Media Network.
00:31We're powered by GameTime and PrizePix.
00:33We'll hear a little bit more from them later.
00:36We usually do these live training camp practice recaps from Gillette Stadium.
00:41A little bit of a change today.
00:42We're back in our home offices.
00:45So I have a rundown.
00:48We have our notes from practice, but I kind of figure that since there wasn't much prep
00:52time, we're kind of fresh off the field.
00:54We're just going to basically throw our notebooks at each other, talk about what happened with
00:58practice today.
00:59And if you guys have any questions as well about practice, feel free to throw whatever
01:03you get in the chat, whatever you want to know, and we'll try and answer it as quickly
01:07and as best as possible.
01:08So Taylor, first and foremost, I think that the number one, A1 topic of today, much like
01:15it is every practice.
01:16I feel like I say this every single time we do a standup, you want to hear about the quarterback,
01:21but it's true.
01:22He's Drake May.
01:23He's the number three pick.
01:24And today I thought things changed.
01:27I don't want to say a lot, but, and I kind of got a smack in the face from some of my
01:33friends down at Foxborough today about my tweet about Drake May, but Drake May did take
01:38reps with the starters today.
01:40And I thought that was noteworthy.
01:42Now did I?
01:43It was a caveat.
01:44Exactly.
01:45There is some caveats, which we'll explain here on the show, if you did see my tweet.
01:49We also explain it in a, in a standup in Foxborough that's yet to be uploaded, but Drake May did
01:54take reps with the ones today for the first time, all training camp.
01:58Now they were limited reps.
02:00They were behind Jacoby Brissett, and they did not actually throw a football with Drake
02:05May in the game, but he had a couple of handoffs.
02:06He got comfortable with David Andrews as his center.
02:10And there was starters along the offensive line and there were starters at wide receiver.
02:14So again, I don't know how noteworthy you really want to call that because again, it
02:18was so few reps, but ultimately with Gerard Mayo saying before practice that it's still
02:24an open competition, although Jacoby Brissett is QB one and that they'll have a decision
02:29after next week's game against Washington or Sunday's game against Washington.
02:33I think at the very least, this is a step in the right direction towards Drake May's
02:37development plan.
02:38And the fact that he, I don't know about could start week one, but could start at quarterbacking
02:43the scene sooner rather than later.
02:45Yeah.
02:46I think there was some pushback saying that Gerard Mayo says something and then doesn't
02:49end up doing it, which I think that him repping, getting the opportunities with Andrews.
02:54They weren't huge.
02:55Again, he didn't even throw on them, but both Andrews, Gerard Mayo and Drake may have acknowledged
02:59that it's still important to have that relationship with the center.
03:03They hadn't even had a quarterback center exchange before the Panthers game until like
03:08way, way earlier in the off season.
03:10So again, I do think this is a competition.
03:13I just think it's a competition that's being framed in the way that Alex Van Pelt and TC
03:17McCartney and Ben McAdoo think is the best for Drake Mays development.
03:21But at the same time, like you mentioned, he's been repping since the last block practices
03:25with the starting receivers, with several of the starting offensive linemen other than
03:29David Andrews, which is why I do understand it is significant that he got any opportunities
03:33with David Andrews, even if he didn't throw in them and Gerard Mayo also.
03:38I'm trying to pepper him with questions where I kind of just pin him into a corner of like,
03:41all right, you said this about starting Drake May where he said after the last game that
03:46the offensive line would not affect whether or not Drake May started.
03:50Now after saying that Drake may struggle with his pre-snap processing and keeping the offense
03:54on schedule and things like that, urgency, all those things that we've said, if Jacoby
03:58Brissett starts, it'll probably because of what he does pre-snap maybe more so than post-snap.
04:04But Gerard Mayo said 100% Drake May is ready to lead a huddle.
04:07So we're getting closer and closer to being like, all right, well, Drake May is better
04:11in practices.
04:12We all think he's better in practices.
04:13I'm not sure how much he could be doing in between the lines that would make it a significant
04:17difference between what we're seeing and maybe what the film says.
04:21And on top of that, this was another day where he and Jacoby still traded off some impressive
04:26throws, but overall Drake May was better.
04:28He had more impressive throws.
04:30He didn't have as many of the throws that made you nervous.
04:32And Jacoby Brissett today had two turnover worthy plays, one that he ended up actually
04:36getting intercepted on, on his first throw team drill.
04:39So I feel like every day it's getting closer and closer to Drake May really could start
04:43for this team.
04:44I do believe it's a competition, but I also think they're having to walk a fine line of
04:48unlike maybe the Cam Newton year a little bit where they truly do believe that Jacoby
04:53could start for them.
04:54I don't know how convinced they were that that was going to be the case with Cam, but
04:58one way or another, I think they want to prepare Jacoby if he is the starter, because you still
05:02need that chemistry with receivers, much less offensive linemen.
05:05So I understand the thinking, but I think the fact that we're seeing more and more of
05:09Drake mixing in with those other guys tells you that internally, they do understand that,
05:14you know, Drake is maybe starting to get on Jacoby's heels, but I think as this week goes
05:18on and then obviously, however, they perform in the preseason, that'll dictate who ends
05:22up most likely being the week one starter.
05:24Right.
05:25And I'll add to it that the whole thing about taking what Gerard Mayo says, and, you know,
05:29maybe he's not telling the truth and maybe he's leading us on and, and we mentioned it
05:32yesterday.
05:33Where, um, or maybe I didn't even mention it on the show, but where with Bill Belichick,
05:39what he said in a press conference, he would either tell you the truth, he would tell you
05:44the truth in a, in a contrived way where he wasn't technically lying, but he wasn't really
05:48saying anything either.
05:49You got to read between the lines.
05:50That's not my job.
05:51Yeah.
05:52Right.
05:53You had to read between the lines of what Bill had to say.
05:54And I remember learning this lesson a few years ago, um, you know, with Alex Barth,
05:58he kind of, uh, he kind of taught me this where Jelani Tavai was like, he didn't look
06:03great in camp.
06:04I wasn't a huge, I wasn't a huge fan of him.
06:06And we were talking on pathway for a while and I was like, I don't see him making the
06:09roster.
06:10I don't know how he's going to make the roster.
06:11And, uh, Barth kept telling me, look, Bill Belichick continues to say that Jelani Tavai
06:16is going to be a part of this team.
06:18And he ended up being a part of this team.
06:19And now obviously I've, you know, I've, uh, I've ate my words on that and I realized Tavai
06:23is good and blah, blah, blah.
06:24Um, you know, I, from there I realized that Bill Belichick always tells the truth.
06:28Now we don't know if Mayo does, but to that point, this is kind of a long winded way of
06:32saying that even with the switch up, right.
06:35That's happened where a couple of months ago, Mayo said that Berset's the starter, Berset's
06:40the starter, Berset's the starter.
06:42And now he's saying that Drake may has a chance to win a job.
06:45I don't think that's like, that's not necessarily the fact that he was lying earlier.
06:49It just means that situation's changed and perhaps Drake may has developed a little bit
06:53while or a little bit faster than they would have liked.
06:55And they feel like they can now, you know, they've seen a little bit more from them.
06:58They seen them in the game, they seen them practice and they feel like they can actually
07:01put them, um, you know, out there on a game field and he had actually went to the game
07:05started week one.
07:06And Mayo's acknowledged that the plan does need to have some flexibility in it because
07:10I really do believe that I think they want to make sure that they're not rushing Drake
07:14out there, which I respect.
07:16I also think that I mentioned in other shows, but I just think Van Pelt's plan may not look
07:21the way we want it to.
07:22But I do think there's an opening for, okay, if Drake is significantly better, he's still
07:27will be someone who's a factor in this competition.
07:30I believe, uh, what Gerard Mayo and Alex Van Pelt said really early on, I think end of
07:35spring, early summer, where Jacoby was the guy they felt was the most ready.
07:38They said he's the most pro ready guy.
07:40And they did believe he could start the entire season.
07:42I was saying, I thought he potentially start the whole season if you needed him to, but
07:47I also have been pretty steadfast on.
07:48I don't think it's going to take that long for Drake may like today.
07:52I asked him a cause Clyde Christensen, who's coached Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady.
07:56When he was in Tampa Bay, he's been around a lot of greats during the draft process.
08:01He compared Drake Mays processing and, you know, intelligence and ability to, uh, to
08:05retain information to Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, one of the smartest quarterbacks we've
08:10probably ever seen enter the game, Peyton Manning, his guy was a photographic memory.
08:14I don't know if luck does, but I know he's an architect, so there's a very good chance
08:18he has something close to a photographic memory.
08:20I didn't ask Drake about that.
08:22I will at some point figure out whether he has anything close, but he mentioned that
08:25the way he learns and retains information is he's like, I learned it, but I repeat it
08:29to somebody else.
08:30And cause it makes sense.
08:31The best way to know you understand something is if you can teach it to someone else.
08:34So it feels like he's the kind of guy.
08:36And from all we've heard where he learns really quickly, he adapts, he has said, I want to
08:40see how, you know, I do something and then I know how to do it the next time.
08:43So I don't think he's this kind of, you have to put him in bubble wrap because you might
08:48hurt his confidence or the bad mechanics thing I think is legitimate.
08:52I think that's part of the equation for them.
08:54Like TC McCartney mentioned, you want to be able to get through your process, but I don't
08:58think it's so scary to start Drake May.
09:00I think it's just, okay, is he checking all the boxes?
09:02If he is, we'll throw him into the fire.
09:04This is a talented kid.
09:05He's a smart kid.
09:06Any mistake he makes, he's not going to repeat because he wants to be great.
09:09And he has that attention to detail.
09:12And once again, I just feel like the plan for him may not look where we want it to,
09:15but it's starting to progress towards, all right, Drake could win this thing.
09:19Let's see what happens against the commanders.
09:21Yeah.
09:22So let's, let's talk then about what we saw actually on the field today.
09:25Obviously mentioning, mentioning that reset, um, you know, was the starter may was working
09:30in behind them a couple of reps with the ones, but even though it was still beset as the
09:34quote unquote QB one may got a bulk of the reps today, um, as Mayo said, also in preparation
09:39for not only Washington, but also Cincinnati, they're working off some cards trying to give
09:43themselves different looks.
09:44There was more, there was less ones versus ones and more ones versus scout teamwork today.
09:50Drake may got a lot of work.
09:51I thought, um, reset had a couple, not great throws, a couple of turnover worthy plays,
09:57which I'll, I'll let you talk about more in depth.
09:59Um, and Drake may, I still think looked like he was a bit smoother and had a little bit
10:03more control of the offense.
10:04A couple of nice throws, one, a couple of the KJ Osborne one to pop Douglas that was
10:09obviously dropped.
10:10Um, and even like, you know, it's, it's small, but there was one play where it looked like
10:15the play in their preseason game last week against the Eagles where off platform kind
10:20of jumping throw or the one where he kind of pitched out to, I think it was Mitchell
10:23Wilcox, um, with a blitz coming in his face, he did something similar today to Austin Hooper.
10:28So there's just a little bit more of a feel for the game.
10:30I feel like with Drake, I think we kind of already know that.
10:32But overall, what did you see from Berset and may today, uh, down there in Foxborough?
10:37I thought both of the guys started the day well with throws on air.
10:40Now that's not indicative of necessarily how good a quarterback is, but there are some
10:44days where you see, they're just clearly not on the same page with some guys.
10:47They don't have a great feel for how certain guys run routes.
10:50Some days you're on, this doesn't feel right.
10:52Some days it's just like, I don't know, I just don't have it today, but they both definitely
10:55had it early.
10:56You know more about that than I would, Mr. Right.
10:58But, um, it did feel, I remember I was saying, oh, this might be a good day for the quarterbacks.
11:03Now Jacoby did like he did in the last practice, have a couple more wild throws that did get
11:07my attention.
11:08He had one downfield to the Mario Douglas on a dig that looked like it was in between
11:11defenders and other to Taekwon Thornton on a corner route.
11:14It looked like he was attacking the space and cover to between the corner and safety.
11:18Another wow.
11:19Throw for me.
11:20But he also started the day by getting intercepted by Marcella style, throwing a corner to Taekwon
11:24Thornton.
11:25I wish I could see the replay.
11:26Cause I feel like Thornton was covered really well and it may not have been a great route,
11:30but either way, I didn't love the decision.
11:32Now it's so tough because we know Jacoby likes to take chances in practice, um, and
11:37see what he can get away with and things like that.
11:39But I feel like that matchup with Taekwon Thornton, well covered, you just shouldn't
11:42really be testing that window cause he's not like a Jalen Pope where you know, he's going
11:45to attack the ball.
11:47You know, most of his success comes when he's got some separation.
11:50And then the other, uh, near interception was the deep curl to Jayvon Baker.
11:54When there were two defenders closing on the route, I could see it developing.
11:58I had a feeling Jay, uh, Jacoby was going to go there and I was like, please don't,
12:01this throw is not there.
12:02Go somewhere else.
12:03And he did it.
12:04And then A.J.
12:05Thomas almost undercut it for an interception in both plays.
12:07It just didn't feel like good decisions.
12:09Like the Hooper one.
12:10I've been one of the few people, the interception he threw in the preseason against the Eagles,
12:13right?
12:14I'm one of the few people who's tried to give him some slack because I've seen so many times
12:18he tries that throw and it usually works.
12:20It was just that he wasn't on the same page.
12:22This was a situation where I'm like, I don't really know what you were going to get out
12:25of making those throws.
12:26And when you put it on the film, I don't really know how you explain it away.
12:32So those were disappointing from Jacoby.
12:33I thought he was maybe in the midst, like even after the early interception, I was willing
12:36to overlook it.
12:37If he had, you know, just a better day coming forward, right?
12:41And then he had the second one and I'm like, all right, now I, you know, I can't really,
12:44I can't really give it to you.
12:45But Drake continues to show the aggressiveness and the willingness to attack tight windows
12:50and go down field that we've seen from him the past couple of weeks.
12:53He had back to back throws in seven versus sevens down the seam.
12:57The first one he completed the KJ Osborne, who he has great rapport with from what we've
13:01seen the past couple of weeks.
13:03Another was a very aggressive throw down the seam to Austin Cooper.
13:07I believe it was.
13:08Brendan Schooler was all over this.
13:10Literally, Drake just put it over Schooler's helmet and gave Hooper a chance to make the
13:13catch through him.
13:14Kind of like what we saw from Kawan Baker with Joe Milton, where he just went up and
13:18basically used the helmet to help him secure the catch.
13:21It kind of looks like what I did when we were playing with the football with you and I put
13:24it on Amit's head and I just threw it up to you a couple of weeks ago.
13:27That's exactly what it looked like.
13:28Hooper couldn't come down with it, but it's the kind of play where in a certain situation,
13:32I would love to see Drake try that, where like Hunter Henry might come down with it.
13:36Also saw him attacking zone coverage again, where you saw, looked like he hit a sail route
13:40to Jalen Rager between a couple of defenders.
13:43There was one other throw that I really like.
13:44I'm trying to find it in my notes.
13:45Did you already mention the Osborne?
13:49Yeah, the seam to Osborne.
13:51There was one other throw.
13:52Yeah.
13:53I'll figure it out somewhere over here.
13:54But yeah, overall, I thought it was a good day from Drake.
13:56Oh, the one to DeMario Douglas, where he threw it really early because DeMario spent time
14:04running under the ball, right down the middle, deep downfield.
14:08DeMario Douglas is wide open, thanks a lot, because of the throw.
14:12But I don't know if he didn't track it the right way because he basically just put one
14:15hand out to grab it, which you don't see from Pop.
14:18He's a guy who fully extends and goes all out.
14:20Maybe he thought he had to dive for it and was like, I'm not going to do that in practice
14:24when there's no one around me.
14:26Maybe he didn't judge it the right way and kind of slowed up a little bit.
14:29Either way, it looked like a good ball from Drake.
14:31Not a great play that time from Pop.
14:34One of the few times he's made a mistake, but again, putting a bow on this, the aggressiveness,
14:39the willingness to attack downfield.
14:40There was one or two plays where it felt like he had to get deep into his progression.
14:43I'm not sure if it was because he held onto the ball or if someone wasn't open, but you
14:47also didn't see the turnover where he plays.
14:50Sometimes it mixed their way in with Drake, where you're like, you know what?
14:53I understand you're trying to make a play.
14:54Just learn.
14:55Don't do that in the future.
14:56But yeah, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anybody who thought that Jacoby was set
15:00out a better day than Drake, who again, continues to make the strides you're hoping to see.
15:04Yeah.
15:05I just wonder if Jacoby's pressing a little bit at this point, right?
15:09Where he hears all the noise and it's talk about Drake May could take him over as soon
15:13as week one.
15:14And are you the starter?
15:15Mayo saying you were the starter and now you're not.
15:18And you get these questions and you hear about it and Drake May is playing better.
15:23So my whole thing with Jacoby was set early on in training camp was he understands the
15:27offense and he's at least putting the ball or throwing to places where he thinks it's
15:33the right decision.
15:34And oftentimes it was the right decision.
15:37Sometimes the ball doesn't get there and sometimes it's overthrown or underthrown and he doesn't
15:39have the best arm, but he's at least making the right move, like the right play, right?
15:43The right read where now it seems like he's not even doing that in practice.
15:48These two turnover worthy plays, the one to Hooper in the preseason game where it's like
15:53not putting the ball in harm's way was your specialty and it has been Jacoby reset specialty
15:57over the course of his career.
15:59And he just hasn't been doing that lately.
16:01And so I wonder if he's maybe pressing trying to now he sees Drake May doing better and
16:05him doing worse and he has to make more plays to try and make this less of a competition
16:09and more of his job, at least for week one.
16:12But yeah, I still think that may has been the better player, the better quarterback
16:17ever since last Thursday's preseason game.
16:19And I will say too, just a little note on the play from pop where it was almost identical
16:24to the one you saw in the, in the preseason game to Jayvon Baker.
16:28It was a Baker ran a post on the right side, pop this time from the left side, you know,
16:33pass coverage, guys trailing him, hits him right in the hands and both guys just drop
16:37it.
16:38So you see that may has, you know, the ability, the aggressiveness to make those throws guys
16:42just now need to come down with a football.
16:44And this offense is going to really start clicking once Drake May's out there.
16:47Once these guys, you know, start bringing down the catches.
16:51So we'll talk more about all of this.
16:53We'll hit the offensive line, we'll hit the rest of our notes from defensive guys, injuries,
16:58things like that.
16:59But first I got to tell you guys about our friends over at game time, because it's now
17:02football season and you can get into games with game time.
17:07They have new features over at game time called game time picks that make getting tickets
17:10to see your favorite teams live even easier.
17:14Game time picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats.
17:18So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
17:22If you go on right now, you can check out paths versus Seahawks in week one and you
17:26can get a super deals, great deals and amazing deals.
17:31They have different, you know, different tiers and you get different deals for each tier.
17:35You can get into the lower bowl at Gillette stadium right now for as low as $270 for their
17:41week to match up home opener against Seattle.
17:44That's why I love game time because you can customize your spot and do and uh, and make
17:49the most out of these game time picks.
17:51So take the guesswork out of buying concert tickets with game time.
17:55Now download the game time app, create an account and use code CLNS for $20 off your
18:01first purchase terms apply again, create an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off.
18:07Download game time today, last minute ticket, lowest prices guaranteed again, that's game
18:12time.
18:13Use code CLNS for $20 off.
18:15All right, Taylor, let's do the offensive line now.
18:17Um, cause they were sort of a topic of discussion with the quarterbacks and may being out there
18:22with Dan, uh, David Andrews, et cetera.
18:24And it was that normal starting offensive line that we've seen throughout the majority.
18:29Now majority now of camp would be very low as the left tackle city.
18:33So as a left guard, David Andrews at center, Michael Dwayne, who went right guard and troops
18:37core of war at right tackle.
18:38That seems like that's the plan they want to go forward with.
18:40Uh, however, Darian low leaves practice today, uh, with what looked to be like a lower back
18:45upper body type injury was grabbing the left, you know, backside of his back as he went
18:49off the field, excuse me, spoke with trainers, went to the medical tent shed, whatever we
18:54want to call it.
18:55And then ended up leaving the field for good and did not return in, in his absence.
19:00We see rookie Caden Wallace come over and take laps reps at the left tackle spot, uh,
19:05for Baderian lows absence.
19:07And at that point, at this point now it's really starting to get thin at the tackle
19:11spot guard looks okay right now.
19:13Nick Leverett did return today.
19:14He was the backup center behind David Andrews, but for the rest of the offensive line, it's,
19:19it's looking like slim pickings.
19:20And the fact that not only do you have players that we talk about and guys like the Darian
19:24low and to score for, who are, I guess, replacement level starters, backup types, swing tackles,
19:30whatever.
19:31But now you don't even have the depth behind those guys.
19:33And we know tackle is so hard to come by, uh, in this league.
19:36So what'd you make a Lowe's, um, Lowe's injury?
19:38What'd you make the shuffling again along the offensive line today?
19:41What'd you see in general?
19:42I mean, we saw, we saw Caden Wallace take over at left tackle when Baderian low went
19:47out, but you have to wonder if he even would have been slotted there because typically
19:50Calvin Anderson has been the top backup at left tackle.
19:55And that forced Caden Wells to play left for the top offense.
19:57And then right for the second offense, then you really only had Kellen Dice and Zuri Henry
20:02as your depth tackles.
20:03We were already talking about how the Patriots needed to keep their eye on the market.
20:07It doesn't even have to be, what is the name of the guy who just got released from the
20:10Titans?
20:11Crazy Dalton.
20:12Oh my gosh.
20:13It's driving me nuts.
20:14I think Davis, I'll find it on day or something, but we've been talking about how they need
20:22to really monitor the offensive line, waiver, wire for agency, whatever.
20:26I don't even think you need a starter or even quality backup.
20:29I think you just need a warm body at this point because it's getting so low.
20:33Like you're at a point right now where Caden Wallace may have to play the entire preseason
20:38game or the vast majority of it because you don't want to have Drake Mayhem there with
20:42Kellen Dice or Zuri Henry at tennis daily, by the way, is the guy's name is daily man.
20:47According, according to Chris Price, uh, the Patriots have been one of several teams that
20:52have inquired on daily.
20:53So that's, that's one to watch right now.
20:55I got to get that name that in, in Christian may Christian go for it, Christian, Christian.
21:03Oh my God.
21:04I know it.
21:05Just tell me, just tell me Christian McCarroll, Christian McCarroll, Christian McCarroll,
21:09Christian McCaffrey gets in my head.
21:11I'm sorry, but they need bottom line.
21:13They need to definitely have an eye and add somebody to tackle because now it's getting
21:17so thin that you're having one guy who's having to play with the starters and backups, and
21:21that's not ideal.
21:22I love Caden Wallace getting reps.
21:24Don't get me wrong, but at the same time, like you need to have these guys on some kind
21:27of pitch count.
21:28Um, and right now that spot is looking even scarier than it already did.
21:32And it's scary and low because he's, he was like, he's getting positive momentum.
21:35So you hope that he's back out there soon.
21:37Yeah, for sure.
21:38Again, he leaves with a, with a lower back there.
21:40Um, Lynn Robinson, uh, worked in a little bit with the, with the starting team again
21:43today, I believe behind city.
21:45So city.
21:46So, uh, it, it feels like that's been a competition now with, with Wallace getting some reps there.
21:50I wonder if that's a, uh, you know, let's see what he can do with this first, with this
21:55first team.
21:56And then maybe if, if he does well, they can shuffle everything else along.
21:59Um, but certainly again, with, with the depth kind of depleting on the outside, you wonder
22:04if the, the move from right guard to right tackle with Michael, one who could potentially
22:10happen sooner rather than later.
22:11He in theory is a, I don't want to say he was a backup tackle for them, but he, he adds
22:16depth.
22:18Wallace then doesn't have to worry about flipping back and forth as much.
22:21Uh, and you go from here, but certainly with, if low goes down again, we don't know what
22:25it is.
22:26We don't know how much time, like he could be back tomorrow and everything's fine, but
22:29you saw it really where it kind of slapped them in the face today, where.
22:32But Aaron Lowe goes down and they're putting a rookie third round pick as the starting
22:36left tackle and the backup right tackle almost immediately.
22:39So again, Calvin Anderson out Nick Leverett, it's a guy who I believe played tackle at
22:43one point for the Buccaneers as well.
22:45I believe it was like one drive in Tom Brady's last game.
22:48It was the final drive.
22:49Somebody must've gotten hurt and they were like, all right, Nick, we need your right
22:52tackle buddy.
22:53And he actually was pretty good.
22:54I wouldn't ever want him there again, but he played well.
22:57Also regarding that guard spot, um, drive Mayo said it was a competition with hit with
23:02city.
23:03So in Leighton Robinson, he didn't, you know, sugarcoat it or anything.
23:05Right.
23:06We've all been saying city.
23:07So I do think he's a very promising player.
23:09I think the strike system will work very well for him.
23:12But when you look at his preseason tape, Leighton Robinson, I don't want to say he's
23:15been perfect.
23:16No player's perfect, but he is putting up some very good tape and there's very little
23:20that you look at and you're like, Ooh, that's not going to play where a city has had some
23:25rough losses.
23:26Like he's been good overall, but there's been like four or five plays where he whiffs, he
23:31ends up on the ground.
23:32And it's just one of those ugly losses that in a real game, you're thinking like, dude,
23:36that can't happen, especially can't happen multiple times when you're playing guys who
23:39aren't even going to start for the teams they're on.
23:41So I didn't want to blow it up because again, this is preseason.
23:44There's things these guys got to learn city is a second year player in the NFL who's learning
23:48a whole new system.
23:49So I wanted to give him some leeway there.
23:51But if it's gotten to the point where external internally, they think it's so bad that they're
23:55willing to let this rookie who I, again, is practicing well, but it's still a rookie really
24:00compete for his job.
24:01I think that's a, that's pretty telling.
24:02So city.
24:03So, you know, might truly be on, you know, on watch, I'll say he's on watch.
24:09All right.
24:10That's interesting to me.
24:11All right.
24:12We're going to get to, again, not, not a ton to take away from today's practice.
24:15I love the big headline again, was, was Drake may there and some of the offensive line shuffling.
24:20So I'm going to send us to break in a second and then we'll wrap it up with some of our,
24:25you know, injury stuff and kind of housekeeping stuff.
24:27But I did want to quickly throw a couple of darts on the board here with just some stuff
24:30that was in my notebook that we didn't really talk about in the standup and maybe we can,
24:35you know, try and pull a little bit more out of it.
24:37One thing was that Alex Austin saw the cornerback to starting reps today, mostly opposite Christian
24:42Gonzalez.
24:43Yesterday it was Marco Wilson.
24:44So that's clearly still a position they're going to rotate through.
24:47Jalen Polk.
24:48I know we don't have a ton on wide receivers today, but I thought he got a lot of run.
24:52Not necessarily with that starting group.
24:54It was more.
24:55No, it wasn't the starters.
24:57He was with Jacoby and I didn't see a whole lot of KJ Osborne.
25:00So I thought I saw Osborne in like one of the early 11 on 11 periods and then later
25:04they went to Jalen Polk.
25:06So they're kind of continuing to work him in with the stars, but there's been times
25:11where I thought Polk was kind of, he was out there, but he wasn't being used as much where
25:17I thought today he was actually getting some volume.
25:19I know he had three catches on four targets at one point in practice.
25:22I didn't, I didn't pay attention enough later on to him to see if he got any more targets
25:27out there.
25:28But today I felt like there was a, was more of a volume day for Jalen Polk.
25:31Yeah.
25:32It was the early 11s.
25:33Jacoby hit him on a flat, on a bootleg, then Drake through two screens to him on RPOs.
25:38It was a period where they were just doing basically runs, like one play action and then
25:42RPOs.
25:43And then there was another one.
25:44It was overthrown where he was well covered by John Jones downfield.
25:48I wasn't sure if it was miscommunication or if Drake was trying to kind of make a safe
25:51play.
25:52So that's a lot of reps.
25:53You mentioned the RPOs.
25:54That was one more thing I wanted to throw out there from, from my notebook today was
25:58there, there was a little bit of a, I'm trying to think of the word.
26:03I'm looking for, but there was a, there were a lot of RPOs called.
26:05I thought when Drake was out there, not, not a ton, not a ton more than Jacoby, but it
26:09was noteworthy because on one of them, he made the correct read on.
26:14It looked like a, a read slant backside to a case on booty.
26:17He pulled the ball fast, hit him right in stride.
26:19It was perfect.
26:20You know, he had a defender on his hip and he got past them, but there was another one
26:23where they had leverage on the outside.
26:26I believe he could have handed it off or he could, you know, throw it out quick on a screen
26:28to Jalen Polk that you just mentioned.
26:30And this time he read the leverage and the numbers they had on the outside correctly,
26:34where I believe we were talking in last Thursday's game and we couldn't figure out if it was
26:40an RPO and if he had to go there or not, broke it down.
26:45And I still didn't really, I didn't know if it made a whole lot of sense, but there was
26:48a play where may threw it out to, I believe it was poke in the game as well.
26:54And Jaheim bell had to block two guys out there and it was a two on two and he threw
26:58it out there anyway.
26:59It felt like the incorrect read.
27:00I don't know.
27:01RPS.
27:02So I thought on an RPO, so I thought it was noteworthy that he went out there and actually,
27:05you know, succeeded in that read today.
27:07So that was kind of the last thing on my notebook.
27:08Anything else you wanted to throw out there before we do our, do our ad and our quick
27:12hitters at the end?
27:13Oh, I'll save it for the quick hitters.
27:14And then I figure we maybe answer a couple of questions cause I know people have some
27:18in the chat.
27:19All right.
27:20We will do all of that quickly, but, or after this quick work, my friends at prize picks

28:32Again, that's prize.
28:33They extend over there.
28:34Use code CLNS.
28:35Help them out.
28:36Help us out over at price, but it's all right.
28:39Quick hitters and some housekeeping stuff to wrap this thing up.
28:42Taylor, I will say that Patriots signed two linebackers yesterday.
28:46They also claimed Matt Landers off waivers, a wide receiver, the linebackers, Christian
28:52McCarroll and Colby Jones, two guys who Taylor's still trying to figure out their names a little
28:58bit.
28:59So am I.
29:00But that was because Josh Uche, O'Shane Zemenez were out yesterday, weren't even out there.
29:05So it was kind of a thought that, you know, they're trying to help out their edge depth.
29:08O'Shane Zemenez and Uche then come out today in full pads, but quickly leave and get to
29:14get some work on the lower field and then end up coming back in street clothes.
29:17So they're continuing there with the linebackers.
29:20And I know you had an observation from McCarroll from practice today.
29:23Yeah.
29:24So they did like a thud period.
29:25It's kind of like Oklahoma's without the beginning where you start on your back and then stand
29:28up.
29:29And there was a rep with McCarroll and Deshaun Fenwick.
29:33Something happened the first time they had to do it again.
29:35That second time around, McCarroll stood Fenwick up.
29:38It was a really loud hit.
29:40Got some love from Demarcus Covington, which is always cool to see for a guy's first day
29:43at a new camp.
29:44Also from that period, Keon White and Ramond Ray Stevenson collided.
29:48You could see, you just saw the matchup, you're like, oh, it's going to be good.
29:52That thud was so loud, like you could just hear both their pads crunching.
29:56I would call it a stalemate.
29:57Like I think Keon stopped Ramond Ray in his tracks, Ramond Ray kept his feet moving and
30:02kind of like got a little bit of push after that was a really cool matchup.
30:06Let's see, emptying out my notes real quick.
30:08Keon White got his hand on a tight end screen against a scout team, batted Joe Milton's
30:13pass in the air, ended up getting caught by Jacob Warren.
30:17Still an impressive play.
30:18Alex Austin repped on the outside at times across from Christian Gonzalez, which we've
30:24seen a lot of Marco Wilson, so I thought it was significant.
30:27But whenever the scout offense was on the field and the top defense was out, it was
30:31Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones on the outside and Marcus Jones in the slot.
30:36I thought that was pretty significant.
30:38Also during the thud period, Joe Giles Harris got in trouble for like not crazy trouble,
30:43but I think he was too aggressive and tackled somebody and tried to finish through contact
30:48and you could hear Mayo.
30:51I don't know what he said exactly, but it was long lines like, hey man, you know, pull
30:54up a little bit.
30:55And then the last one emptying it out, Marcus Jones picked off Joe Milton when he, when
31:00Joe Milton was a scout team quarterback.
31:02Really cool play.
31:03Marcus Jones was like in the flat as that cloud defender and then crept up.
31:07I don't think Joe Milton saw him and then jumped up and made an interception.
31:09I was just going to say there's no way Milton saw him because from my angle, I wasn't watching
31:14the quarterback.
31:15I was watching the defense and it looked like Jones just like ran the route for Joe Milton
31:17and just basically caught it in stride and kept running.
31:19It was awesome.
31:20Yeah, it was good play.
31:21That's pretty much it.
31:22Yeah.
31:23All right.
31:24I will just quickly add Sean Wade.
31:25Someone who's been out, did start, start practice in pads and participated.
31:29He ended up leaving practice early with, I don't know if it's a new injury, a different
31:33injury, but he left with a trainer and did not return.
31:35And then quick note on the tight end room as well.
31:37Austin Hooper, after returning to practice yesterday and not participating, he did return
31:42today and did participate.
31:43So some good news on the tight end front.
31:46Also Mitchell Wilcox, who was out yesterday as well, was out there, not in pads, a non-participant,
31:50but he at least stretched and got some work in out there in some non-padded drills.
31:56So a little bit more help, a little bit more, I guess, optimism in the tight end room.
32:01I think additionally with Hunter Henry, is that someone who Mayo called day to day?
32:06No, he said that Uche's day to day and Mapu's week to week.
32:12Okay.
32:13So nothing yet on Hunter Henry.
32:14So we'll see what happens there.
32:15He wasn't out there today as well.
32:18While we're talking about tight ends, you want to answer a question real quick about
32:20Absolutely.
32:21So CJO is on one of the pads now that he's released.
32:24Yeah, I looked at the tape.
32:26He actually played really poorly against the Patriots.
32:28Didn't have any positive plays.
32:29I've not heard good things from Philly's beat about him.
32:33Just from what I've read online.
32:34I haven't talked to anybody.
32:35If they need a warm body, sure.
32:37But if guys are starting to get healthier, like we did see Hooper back, Wilcox, we have
32:41no idea how close he is to returning, but I wouldn't rule it out because they are very
32:45kind of like tackle where it's like, Hey, it doesn't really matter how good the guy
32:48is.
32:49You need somebody to put out on the field.
32:51Although they do have like Jacob Warren, you know, Michael Petway.
32:55So they're not desperate, desperate, like they are a tackle.
32:59But if they sign somebody like an Uzama or somebody cheaper, who they know is going to
33:03be okay with really just being here for like a week or two, then I can see something like
33:07that.
33:08Yeah.
33:09Yeah.
33:10Yeah.
33:11Yeah.
33:12Yeah.
33:13Yeah.

40:24Drake getting rattled or maybe developing bad habits if those things aren't on the table
40:29and we know that he's fine running the pre step operation if Mayo's being honest and
40:32he's outplayed the set why wouldn't you play him?
40:35So that's where I think they probably wouldn't be completely honest with us where if we're
40:39asking if are you worried about this guy getting hurt or worried about his development they're
40:43not going to be like yeah we're scared and I know that's not what you're looking for
40:46but I still think that that's the case and I still feel like they have a tough stretch
40:50to begin the season with Cincy and San Fran and a short week against the Jets and the
40:57soft landing spot still feels like Miami week 5 and I feel like that's probably the earliest
41:04we're going to see him and I hope I'm wrong because I think Bay's better but I still feel
41:08like week 5 is the sweet spot.
41:10I just look at Jacoby in these practices compared to what Drake has looked like in these practices.
41:14Let's talk about how tough these defenses are this is still a team that wants to win
41:17games like again unless you are worried about Drake in terms of like potentially regressing
41:24or what have you if you think it's rushing I don't want again I cannot emphasize enough
41:28I do not want him rushed out there right if there's a reason they're not telling us that
41:32they're like it's not time for sure that's it's not worth just winning games and hurting
41:36your quarterback but if you're like no Drake can go out there and play if we need him to
41:40and you're facing all these good defenses you think Jacoby is going to show them enough
41:45that they're not going to at least that's why I say I think that Drake's going to start
41:48before October because I think against that tough competition where the offense does need
41:52someone to help elevate them a bit I like pop I like KJ I like poke I think the interior
41:58of the offensive line is solid I feel like one of those two tackle spots will be good
42:01enough I just don't know if Jacoby is the guy who's going to take you from a team that
42:05maybe wins on the last possession to one that's actually competitive throughout the entire
42:09game this is supposed to be quick hitters I think we saw for five minutes but it's still
42:12a it's a it's a fair conversation it's the it's the conversation so it's okay that we
42:17went off on this one this is like the this is the one storyline that you know we can
42:21talk about freaking Matt Landers and Christian McCarroll all we want but nationally and the
42:27Patriots brand as a whole like with with you know with what fans want and what fans looking
42:33for Drake may the quarterback position is the conversation so it's okay that we went
42:37off that one other is there anything else we can hit before we get out here there's
42:40one clarify so Drake has not in my that I've seen thrown a pass against the starting defense
42:46right I believe that's correct because today was the one time where he was with starters
42:51yeah defense but he handed off correct correct usually it's a mix like usually plays the
42:56backups but if he does play starters it's because like today they had the starting they
43:01had like backup corners but the rest of the defense was starters then they flipped it
43:05where it was starting corners and the rest were backups which I think is Pellegrino saying
43:09he wants to have different matchups and give guys different coverage assignments but yeah
43:13that's another big indicator is that may has yet to play against the entire starting defense
43:21let's see if anything else we can actually hit really quick I've seen some questions
43:24about my poop no updates on my poo other than the fact that he is a week to week situation
43:30yep let's see who starts left tackle week one I think it's going to be low it's still
43:35considering low barring barring today's barring today's injury being more serious than than
43:42it looked it's low and I don't think there's a question here's a phone maybe we can end
43:46on this surprise cuts this year boy honestly I would have said my Purcell who they did
43:55cut was a surprise I thought he'd been playing pretty well I didn't see that coming what
43:59about a guy like Tristan Hill is that even a surprise I think I would so what I would
44:04pick would probably be Armand Watts because he was signed as a guy where he kind of assumed
44:09he was going to play a role on this defensive front especially because the depth isn't great
44:13but he's been playing deep into preseason games and he hasn't been particularly good
44:16or made an act against like backups to backup so I would say probably Armand Watts I do
44:22want to say chooks but I also don't want to like open that can of worms again and I don't
44:27feel like yeah I don't think he's gonna get cut but that's why it would be such a surprise
44:32I wouldn't be a surprise that would be beyond a surprise because he's he's there starting
44:37X and I don't think it's yeah I'm trying to think I'm trying to pull out another surprise
44:43cut before he leaves.
44:44Is Mitchell Wilcox a surprise?
44:45No.
44:46Do you think that was a surprise at this point I think yeah he's been repping with the ones
44:51so much I feel like even if he doesn't play like he may be a game day inactive but I think
44:57they're gonna so when I'm on the roster um linebacker is set cornerback who I don't
45:06really think anybody would be a surprise Isaiah Bolden it's not a surprise though that's not
45:10a surprise you're right surprise a little bit because they clearly like him he's starting
45:15on special teams he's been there starting slot corner at times I feel like it would
45:20be a bit of a surprise Joe Cardona surprise cut Tucker Addington takes over my gosh that
45:26I don't think it's I would say Joey Sly would be a surprise cut I like that that's a good
45:31one to end on Joey Sly after today would be a surprise cut there we go all right so that's
45:35gonna do it for us here today on Patriots Daily here on the CLS Media Network we'll be back
