00:00I did not expect this at all, it was also not the plan, but yeah, we were with a small group in the downhill and at that point I was alone and the speed was out and I saw a good moment so I went and I did not expect to arrive solo but it feels really nice.
00:21Welcome to stage 5 of La Vuelta Femenina.
00:24Anna van der Brecken gave SD Works their second consecutive stage win yesterday but the whole GC picture will be shaken up today in the first proper mountain stage of this year's edition.
00:37FDJ Suez are sure to be taking the fight to SD Works with their three pronged attack of Demi Follering, Juliette Leboos and Evita Muzic while other teams will simply be trying to hold on and keeping their eyes open for opportunities. Fireworks guaranteed.
00:54There are just over 120km to cover today but it's all about the last 35. After the intermediate sprint the riders will tackle the same climb twice, just going a bit further the second time around.
01:07The Alto de Rosavientos is a gruelling appetiser, 4k at 8.1%, while the full climb of the fearsome Lagunas de Nela is 6.8k at 8.7%. They will certainly give us a clearer picture of who can win this Vuelta.
01:22Four ladies got into the day's breakaway and they led by two and a half minutes with just over 45km to go.
01:31Among the non-starters was Visma Lisa Bikes GC leader Pauline Ferron Prevo who had already lost a bit of time yesterday.
01:38The French woman still struggling with an ankle infection and we wish her a speedy recovery.
01:42So the four riders at the front.
01:45Micah van der Daun, a teammate of Casio Nuevia Doma at Canyon Tram.
01:49Julia Borgstrom from the AG Insurance Soudal Squad who's previously worn the white jersey at the Tour de France.
01:54Arianna Fidanza of Laboral Kutcher Fundacion Escardi whose younger sister Martina rides for Visma Lisa Bike.
02:03And Lea Lynn Teutenberg of Lotto Ladies who was already on the attack a few days ago.
02:08Well the day's early rain had calmed down by this point but the roads were still a bit slippery.
02:12Well Esme Hilkens was forced to abandon the race we hope that she's okay.
02:21Her Lotto Ladies team mate Audrey de Kirschmacher also didn't start this morning so not the best day for the Belgian outfit.
02:28As they approached the intermediate sprint the four breakaway riders only led by around a minute and between them they would take all the bonus seconds.
02:35Borgstrom deciding to kick on just after they rolled through and she was followed by Fidanza.
02:41Meanwhile Marianna Vos helped herself to ten more points in her bid to take home that green jersey.
02:47Borgstrom and Fidanza leading the way towards the first climb as van der Daun and Teutenberg were swept up by the peloton.
02:54Well the road began to rise long before they hit the official start of the climb with the peloton closing fast.
02:59There was one last effort from Fidanza but they were all back together again as they hit the Alto de Rosavientos.
03:06FDJ Suez with their armada on the front of the bunch.
03:09Amy Wollaston, Ruzik, LaBus and Follorain.
03:12Atención caída de la lider.
03:20Oh and riders down look at that you can hear the scream Femke Gerica who we hope can get back on her bike.
03:25This is no way for her reign in the red jersey to end.
03:30A real shame to see Femke Gerica losing her red jersey in these circumstances.
03:35Fortunately she didn't seem to be too badly injured just a bit shaken up.
03:39Well back at the front the French duo of LaBus and Musique were continuing to share turns for FDJ Suez.
03:46This group of favourites still contained Kerbayol, Molman Passio, Fisher Black, Rihanna Marcus,
03:52Nuevia Dömer, Van der Brechen, Castellain, Bunel, Reuze, Cavallar and the Spanish champion Oster Larsa.
03:59But Mavi Garcia was one of the first big names to drop.
04:01About 15 riders remaining as they got to the summit, following casually zipping up her jacket with everybody else looking on the limit.
04:09Fisher Black taking the 10 points and leading them into the descents.
04:13Well no surprise to see Kerbayol trying to go on the attack on the downhill, finding an ally in Nuevia Dömer.
04:19Although the French woman almost overdid it at one point.
04:21Well that was a dodgy moment to say the least, kept it upright, no panic, just ran off road.
04:28It was then a bit of a lull as they got to the bottom of the descent which allowed several dropped riders to catch up again including Evita Muzic.
04:34Movistars at Murray Meijering then decided to go on the attack solo, pulling around 30 seconds clear of the rest.
04:42SD Works also playing some tactical games, with Van der Brechen sending Bredewold up the road.
04:48But this stage was ultimately going to come down to climbing legs.
04:52Meijering still 50 seconds clear as Muzic led the GC group onto Lagunas de Nela, now about 20 women in here.
04:59They swept up Bredewold with around 4.5k to go and she was soon dropped.
05:05Muzic still setting a strong tempo before handing over to her teammate Juliette Leboos.
05:10A sudden injection of pace from the French champion, Van der Brechen straight on the wheel.
05:15And this one really thinned out the group.
05:18Paulina Royakers then made her move just as Meijering was caught, but she didn't go far either.
05:23Six riders now left at the front.
05:25Van der Brechen, Follering, Reuyser, Fischer Black, Kerbeil and Royakers.
05:30And it was finally time for the defending champion to make her move.
05:34Here she goes, Follering launches.
05:37Van der Brechen, not an instant reaction from her, but it absolutely was from Marlene Reuyser.
05:42Follering soon shaking off the impressive Reuyser and going solo.
05:46The Swiss powerhouse demonstrating her climbing abilities, with Van der Brechen chasing in third place.
05:51But the day, the victory and the red jersey would all belong to the number one, Demi Follering.
05:56But no one was ever going to be able to get back on terms.
06:01And as she approaches the line once more at Lagunas, Danela, this time in the Vuelta Femenina 2025.
06:08Stage five to be claimed by the champion.
06:11And she's heading into red.
06:13It's Demi Follering that takes the victory.
06:14If yesterday was Van der Brechen announcing her comeback, then today was following showing everyone who's boss on the first summit finish of this Vuelta Femenina.
06:26The 28-year-old simply had too much strength for her rivals and she's now in a great position to defend her title, her fourth win of 2025 and the 48th of her career.
06:35Mentally, I know I'm very, very, very strong. Because of my mentality, I can win beautiful races. But some people, their mentality, their brain is a bit too strong in the wrong direction and they struggle and suffer so much with their mental health.
06:56And it's still such an unknown problem in this world. So today, my win was a sacrifice for all the people who really are mentally.
07:11Following, coming in 24 seconds clear of Reusser and 56 ahead of Van der Brechen.
07:16Roy Akers was fourth ahead of the Spanish champion, Oster Lassa, followed by the French trio Kerbeil, Bunel and Le Boos.
07:22Following now leads the race by 45 seconds from Van der Brechen, with Reusser just a second further back.
07:29Kerbeil and Marcus are fourth and fifth, with just under three minutes separating the top ten.
07:35Voss remains on course to win the points classification. She's increased her lead over Heritse to 48 points.
07:42Having taken 18 QOM points today, Following also leads the mountains classification ahead of her teammate Music. Reusser is up to third.
07:50The GC riders will theoretically take a back seat on Friday's sixth stage as we prepare for another sprint in Baltanas,
07:58although anything's possible at this Vuelta.
08:01Either way, join us again tomorrow and thanks for watching.
