Mayor David Evans speech for VE Day
Transcript
00:00Today the V-80 is quite personal for me as a veteran of the Royal Air Force for 27 years.
00:12During that time, remembering Sunday, Battle of Britain Day, many remembrance of events resonate quite deeply with me.
00:25During World War II, I lost my great uncle, Eric. He was killed in a fire accident in Canada. He was buried in a military cemetery in a mountain hat.
00:37That really resonates because he was Air Force, IMX Air Force.
00:43The medals I wear remind me of the number of crews that are peed to their funerals.
00:51It's quite, one of the things you don't like to do, but you're honouring their memory.
00:58The one memory was from my time on helicopters. We lost crews in Norway, in Zimbabwe, on peacekeeping missions.
01:07One, I'd say, was called Mike Smith. And we lost another Mike Smith when I was on a squibber at Bruggan.
01:16And that was particularly tragic. That resonates with our family because his wife was my daughter's teacher.
01:22That was on the 13th of January. And then, two years later, on the 13th of January, we lost a crew in the lead-up to the Gulf War.
01:31And then, on the first sortie of the war, we lost more.
01:35So, remembering Sunday, things like today are deeply personal.
01:39And those are the things that I remember are deeply personal.
01:44And those are the things that I remember are deeply like this.
