00:00During my time, people were free to make complaints to the government.

00:09If there is something wrong, like you site a temple where a mosque is,

00:16then they complain to the government and we settle it internally.

00:21We don't have to go and fight each other, go to the public and do all kinds of funny things.

00:27Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad says during his tenure as Prime Minister,

00:32all public grievances were addressed quietly through government channels

00:36without escalating into open confrontations or unrest.

00:40His comments follow a controversy in March over the relocation of the 130-year-old

00:45Dewi Sipater Kaliman Temple in Kuala Lumpur,

00:48which was situated on land sold to textile retailer Jackal Trading Sundiam Berhad in 2012.

00:54The company's plan to build the Madani Mosque on the site drew strong opposition,

00:58leading Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to clarify that the government was not involved in the mosque's construction.

01:04But nowadays, you cannot. You cannot even complain.

01:08Whatever the government does, you have to support.

01:12And if the government doesn't take any action, you are left stranded. You can't do anything.

01:20There is a lot of frustration now. In fact, racism now is much more than during my time.

01:30Mahathir cited Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand as countries that do not experience similar racial tensions,

01:37attributing this to the presence of a unifying national language and the absence of race-based political parties.

01:44But in Malaysia, we have parties that are based on race.

01:49And if you base parties on race, and you promote your race, your culture, your language and all that,

01:57then we are divided by race.

01:59Racism is because these people, especially the politicians, make use of race in order to gain support for themselves.

02:09However, he said Malay parties should not be considered race-based as they are rooted in nationality.

02:15This country was founded by the Malays. It's recognized as Tanah Melayu.

02:20If you become a Malay by adopting Malay language, Malay culture, we accept them.

02:28They can join UMNO. They can join any Malay party because it is not based entirely on race. It's based on nation.
