00:00A senior psychiatrist has called for the installation of physical barriers and safety nets at the Penang Bridge
00:07to deter suicide attempts and reduce fatalities.
00:10University of Malaya's Dr. Mohsin Ahmad Zahari said that the measure, combined with surveillance systems such as CCTVs,
00:17could deter intending jumpers, giving responders time to act.
00:21Mohsin's remarks come after a man reportedly fell from the Penang Bridge two weeks ago, prompting a search and rescue operation.
00:28In a written reply presented at the Penang State Assembly on November 22 last year,
00:33the State Health Department called for the installation of safety barriers to deter individuals from leaping into the channel.
00:39The written reply also revealed that there were 23 attempted suicides at Penang's first and second bridges between 2020 and 2023,
00:48with the majority taking place on the first link.
00:51However, the state government opted to prioritize increased awareness campaigns for the time being.
