00:00Malaysia should look to Central Asia as a potential market amid the looming imposition of a 24% tariff on Malaysian imports by the U.S.

00:13This is what former Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said in an exclusive interview with FMT,

00:19adding that the region, which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, holds vast untapped potential, especially in the oil and gas sector.

00:33The other one is Central Asia. We don't know much about them, but I think they are prospering very well.

00:41Petronas used to be in one or two countries. They are probably not that active there now, but these are rich countries, probably not exploited as much.

00:53I mean, in as far as oil and gas is concerned.

00:57As of 2024, only about 20 to 25% of Central Asia's proven hydrocarbon resources have been exploited,

01:06according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the BP Statistical Review of World Energy.

01:15Saifuddin also called for a strengthening of intra-ASEAN trade to reduce dependency on the United States.

01:23The Bersatu man said Malaysia could act as a key conduit for trade between East and West Asia.
