00:00ASEAN member states should consider adopting initiatives introduced by the Communications
00:05Ministry to create a safer online ecosystem, an academic said.
00:11Ahmad Faizal Fiya of University Technology Mara said, Malaysia as ASEAN chair is well
00:16positioned to achieve consensus on regulating social media, including platform licensing
00:21while also setting an example of progressive digital governance.
00:26Police Minister Fahmi Fazil recently announced amendments to the Communications and Multimedia
00:30Act 1998 aimed at tackling various online crimes including paedophilia, scams and gambling.
00:37Meanwhile, regulations requiring social media providers with at least 8 million registered
00:42users in Malaysia to be licensed came into force on January 1st this year.
00:48Security and political analyst Nurnerwandi Matnordin called for cross-border cooperation
00:52among ASEAN member states to address social media security issues.
00:57Nurnerwandi, who is attached to University Technology Mara's Centre for Media and Information
