Wes Streeting has defended "unpopular" policies such as the cut to the winter fuel payment following Labour's poor performance in the local elections. "Voters have sent us a very strong message which we're taking on the chin. We know there have been some policies which have been unpopular whether it's national insurance or winter fuel among other things - that's how we're investing in the NHS," the health secretary added. 00:00Last week's results at the local elections and in the Runcorn by-elections were really disappointing for Labour and voters have sent us a very strong message which we're taking on the chin.
00:09Which is unless they feel positive change in their own lives, in their own pockets, in their public services and for our country, they will look for change elsewhere.
00:19And that's why the Prime Minister's told all of us in government he wants to see us go further and faster to deliver results.
00:26And we know there are some individual policies that have been unpopular, whether it's employers, national insurance, winter fuel and other things.
00:33That's how we're investing in the NHS. It's how we're cutting NHS waiting lists, investing in our GPs.
00:38We've got a lot of problems to sort out as a country. We're moving in the right direction.
00:42Change has begun, but the best is still to come and we know people have got to feel that change, otherwise they'll look elsewhere.
