00:00The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, thinks that there is an absolute need to get
00:04control on migration. Talking to Euronews, he defended his proposal to increase the amount
00:10of money it's offered to migrants as a financial incentive to leave Sweden.
00:15The current grant stands at 900 euros per adult, but has seen little success so far.
00:21In 2023, only one out of 70 applications was approved, according to the Swedish Migration
00:27Agency. A new government proposal would raise it to 32,000 euros, a 3,400 percent increase.
00:35I don't think that would be a method that works for very many people, but we do have a problem
00:40with integration. If people who have a legal right to stay in Sweden but basically do not
00:46integrate, basically do not really appreciate the Swedish way of life, then at least people
00:52would think about returning to their country of origin.
00:55The proposal is set to take effect on January 1st, 2026. Meanwhile, Kristersson supports a
01:03regulated migration policy such as the EU's Migration Pact and says rejected asylum seekers
01:09should not remain in Europe.
01:11Right now we have some 80 percent of those have a negative decision on the side of they
01:16nevertheless they stay in Europe. That is simply unacceptable in Sweden, but we have managed
01:21that. I think we have now some 20 percent staying, even though they shouldn't, but by
01:26those who have had a negative decision. So we need, I mean, we absolutely need to get
01:32control of the migration.
01:34Kristersson sees a dramatic shift in the attitude within Europe, making formal migration political
01:39decisions easier.
