00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World, and in this week's show, we'll be reflecting on Brighton & Hove Albion's dramatic victory over West Ham United before we look ahead to Sunday's match against Newcastle United.
00:46First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:49The emergency services were called to an incident at Eastbourne District General Hospital on Wednesday.
00:54Pictures showed ambulance crews and fire trucks on the scene at the hospital after a car rolled into a structure covering the ambulance bay at approximately 10.30am.
01:03The hospital remained open following the incident. A woman was assessed and treated before being taken into hospital for checks.
01:09Visitors flocked to Brighton Beach this week as temperatures soared across the county.
01:14Pictures showed hundreds of people visiting the beach while Sussex enjoyed its hottest week of the year, which is set to continue into the weekend.
01:21Temperatures have reached up to 28 degrees Celsius.
01:23Meteorologist Jason Kelly said it's possible national and station records for daytime and overnight temperatures may be broken, but it's unclear at this point whether heat wave criteria will be reached in some of the lower category areas, which require temperatures to reach 25 degrees Celsius or above for three consecutive days.
01:40Shorham Sailing Club fears it is in grave danger of being washed away.
01:45The club, which is located on the far end of Shorham Beach, directly opposite the RNLI Lifeboat Station, is an incorporated charitable organisation and home to aid a sailing club.
01:54The club's camaraderie, William Warren, said our club, which has stood securely on this piece of acclaimed land for the last 65 years, is in grave danger of being washed away.
02:03In addition, all the housing at the east end of Shorham Beach will be in danger from flooding as the water will travel up the road and in their front doors.
02:11The erosion of our land has been caused by the concrete slipway that was designed and built by the Environment Agency as a replacement for our existing slipway.
02:18The new slipway was built in 2019 and designed without any tidal modelling, despite assurances from the Environment Agency the modelling had been done.
02:26The Environment Agency issued a firm statement in response to these claims.
02:29A spokesperson said, it is untrue to say that erosion has been caused by the Shorham Ada Tidal Wall Scheme or slipway.
02:35Movement of beach material has always occurred on this section of the Tidal River Ada.
02:38The addition of the concrete slipway is not the cause of this natural process.
02:43Niddle has set out his plans for a major expansion with a number of Sussex towns on its list of priority locations.
02:50Niddle GB has announced plans to invest half a billion pounds in the expansion as the discounter moves forward with plans to open more than 40 new stores across the country this financial year.
02:59As part of his continued mission to provide all communities across the country with access to affordable, high-quality food, Niddle has published his 2025 Site Requirements brochure outlining potential locations.
03:09The Sussex areas on the list include Bexhill, Brighton & Hove, Burgess Hill, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Haywardty, Lewis, Lansing, Newhaven, Pagham, Peacehaven, Pulbraith, Rustenson, Rye, Seaford, Arkfield and Worthing.
03:26Finally, Worthing's newest coffee shop is already receiving a positive reaction from residents.
03:32According to owners, brothers Aaron and Loizo Kohler, who are brothers, customers through the doors of Il Foxo so far have enjoyed their experience.
03:39The coffee shop, which specialises in Greek coffees and pastries, opened on Sunday in Montague Place.
03:45It is in the unit previously occupied by the Loft Barbershop and is next door to Costa Coffee.
03:50Aaron and Loizo said, we love this location and wanted to open here because it reminded us of the Greek squares where everybody sits outside.
03:57We wanted families to be able to do this in our coffee shop without cars around them.
04:00This is perfect. Our customers so far have been really nice.
04:04Yes, guys, how's it going? I'm Henry Bryant, a reporter for Sussex World, and I've just watched Brighton & Hove Albion win 3-2 at the death at the Amex Stadium against West Ham.
04:15Absolute limbs, absolute seams. It all started off with Yasin Ayari, a beautiful curled strike outside the box.
04:24A perfect upper 90 finish, and that was the 1-0 score going into half-time.
04:31Then they were able to pull one back West Ham with the help of Kudus, who was just a quality player in this game.
04:38Really did show off his skill and that talent that he's got in the middle of the park.
04:42After that, Brighton were looking to get into this game, and they were the better team the whole way through.
04:48Afterwards, Sussex got another goal. It was 2-1.
04:52Quickly after that, Matoma, who had come on as a substitute, got a goal, a nice-headed goal.
04:58And then right to the death, when it was 2-2, in the second minute of added time,
05:03that boy, Carlos Beliba, scored an absolute peach of a goal.
05:08Very similar to Ayari's in some senses, but it was better.
05:12It was curled in there. The fans went absolutely crazy.
05:16It was complete limbs, bonkers. A magic bit of moment. A magic moment, I should say.
05:21And afterwards, Fabian Herzler were speaking about the game and how, in that last 10 minutes,
05:27they had been actually working on their tactics to make sure that they can have a strong end to the game in this one.
05:33And that certainly did pay off.
05:35Graham Potter did not want to speak to us about being back at Brighton.
05:39They didn't want to speak to us at all, really.
05:42Because when he was asked about Brighton and being back there,
05:46he said that he didn't want to speak about the club.
05:47And he also said that when you win, you look like a genius. And when you don't, you don't.
05:52So that's all that can really be said. He was not a happy man.
05:55It was a ferocious post-match interview and post-match press conference from Graham Potter.
06:01Really didn't want to say much.
06:03That's another push for Brighton's European hopes.
06:06Have they left it too late? Who knows?
06:08But I've been Henry Bryant.
06:09We've got player ratings and more on sussexworld.co.uk.
06:13You can find them all there.
06:15Stay tuned for the Goalmouth Action Podcast.
06:18Goalmouth Action Podcast.
06:45Welcome to another episode of the Goalmouth Action Podcast,
06:48where we take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
06:52I'm Matt Poulton. This week I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard,
06:55Sam Morton, who covers both the Seagulls and Crawley Town,
06:58and Red Devils expert Mark Dunford.
07:01Brighton's stemmed their poor runner form with an unbelievable come-from-behind home win
07:04over former manager Graham Potter's West Ham United.
07:07We'll look back at that extraordinary result.
07:09Plus, we'll bring you all the latest team news ahead of Albion's home clash
07:11with Champions League chasing Newcastle,
07:13as well as all the latest from an emotional week at Crawley Town.
07:16You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online
07:19at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport,
07:22and you can check out other great videos on Shotstv.com and Freeview Channel 262.
07:26You may also be watching on latest TV, so thank you very much for tuning in.
07:29But we'll start at the Amex, where Carlos Belieb's stunning effort
07:32decided an enthralling five-goal game.
07:35Go Brighton, a first Premier League winning six.
07:37Trailing 2-1 to West Ham with a minute to go.
07:39The home side levelled through Kamuomitoma before,
07:41with almost a final kick of the game.
07:43Belieb of five powerfully passed Hammers' keeper,
07:45Alphonse Arreola, from outside the box.
07:48It was certainly a thriller, Darren.
07:49Sum that one up for us, if you can.
07:51Where do you start?
07:52Yeah, I know.
07:53It was one of those matches.
07:54It was a really entertaining contest and had a bit of everything.
07:58And most importantly for Brighton, it had a last-minute winner as well,
08:02which they really needed because they'd been on this terrible run of form
08:07where they'd slipped down the table.
08:09But that one, the three points against West Ham puts them back into the mix
08:13for European football.
08:15So they've got four matches to go, starting this Saturday against Newcastle.
08:21And yeah, they're really pushing now for the European places.
08:24And you think the manner of the victory as well,
08:27with the last-minute strike, should really boost morale.
08:32There's nothing like a last-minute winner to get the crowd going,
08:36to get the team going.
08:37And you could just see the messages that Brighton players were posting
08:41on social media, how the fans were reacting to it.
08:44And even, I think Sam's going to talk about it later,
08:48but for Fabian Herzella as well, he hasn't always had the best relationship
08:53with the Brighton fans.
08:55But there was a moment there where he was really enjoying it.
08:59And he had a moment with the crowd as well.
09:02So hopefully that's sort of a turning point for him as well.
09:05So I was quite pleased for him in that respect.
09:08But it was, they had their, obviously,
09:12Mitoma was on the bench to start with.
09:14Lovely goal from Yasin Ayari to get Brighton going.
09:18And they were pegged back.
09:19Mitoma came off the bench and looked a real threat as well.
09:23He's still recovering from his heel injury.
09:24So he's only playing a little bit at the moment.
09:27But he got the goal.
09:28And then Carlos Belieber.
09:29So it's probably Yasin Ayari, Mitoma and Belieber have been three
09:33of Brighton's best players this season.
09:35So it was quite good to see them all make a major contribution.
09:39And Belieber's goal, he played at centre-back for the game
09:43because of Jan-Paul Van Hecker's head injury that he sustained
09:47against Brentford.
09:48And, yeah, he powered forward and curled one in in the last minute.
09:51So it's how much is he worth now as well?
09:55So he's been brilliant this season.
09:57So, you know, I'm sure Brighton will be sort of fending off some bids
10:01for him, you know, after his performances.
10:04And that would have, you know, put him in the spotlight even more.
10:07But, yeah, great, great, great game.
10:09Really, really good entertaining game.
10:11It was indeed.
10:12And just 180 seconds separating Mitoma's equaliser
10:15and Belieber's dramatic winner.
10:17Sam, how season-defining could those 180 seconds be
10:20for Brighton and Fabian Hetzela?
10:21Is it the spark the Seagulls need to go on a run of results
10:24over the final four games and maybe qualify for Europe?
10:27I think so.
10:28It could be absolutely massive because simply it ended a run
10:32of six games without a win in all competitions.
10:34And things were looking really bleak.
10:36And it looked like we're heading for a fourth defeat
10:38in five league games when Duché completed the turnaround
10:41for the Hammers.
10:42And you kind of just felt like, yet again, Brighton were going
10:45to lose a Premier League game.
10:48And it was quite remarkable that after conceding so late on,
10:51they managed to turn the game on its head once again
10:53and to win the game.
10:54And it just shows kind of how much resilience is in the team.
10:58And despite all the blows they've been taking recently,
11:00they've still got that fight and belief in each other
11:02and the manager.
11:03And that was really great to see.
11:04And credit must go to Ray and Gruda.
11:07He got two assists, obviously, to win the game.
11:09First one was a great cushioned header for Mitoma.
11:12The second one, admittedly, was probably more simple
11:15to give the ball to Believer and he let fly from distance.
11:19But, yeah, I think that's really great to see
11:21because Gruda's obviously had limited minutes for Brighton.
11:25And just players like that can really make an impact,
11:27obviously, with players out injured, such as Jorginho,
11:30Rutter.
11:31You need players to take their opportunity when they get them
11:34to really make a difference in these tight games.
11:36And they're going to definitely need that kind of inspiration
11:41from these players in the final few games of the season.
11:45But it definitely will be morale-boosting in that race
11:47for the eighth place, which we know would likely secure a place
11:50in the Conference League next season.
11:52Just the unfortunate bit for Brighton is that Fulham also hit
11:55a late winner against Southampton to stay above Brighton.
11:58But Bournemouth conceded very late to draw against
12:00Manchester United, which was, yeah, that equaliser to Brighton
12:05a really big favour.
12:06So Albion are back up to ninth, just below Fulham
12:08on goal difference.
12:10There's just actually three goals in it on goal difference.
12:12And the Seagulls have the benefit of six more goals scored
12:14across the season at the moment.
12:17They've got tough matches to finish the season against
12:19Champions League chasing Newcastle before travelling
12:21to in-form Wolves.
12:23Then they face Champions Liverpool before travelling
12:25to struggling Tottenham.
12:26But Fulham and Bournemouth run isn't much easier.
12:28The cottages have got Villa, Everton, Brentford and Man City.
12:31And the Cherries have got Arsenal, Aston Villa, City and Leicester.
12:35So, yes, and both teams have got some real tough matches
12:38coming up in the final four games.
12:40So, yeah, it'll be an interesting race for a great place.
12:43But I think that win at the weekend really does put Brighton
12:46in a good position.
12:47Hopefully they can build on it.
12:49Yeah, hopefully they can.
12:50And, Darren, you mentioned Ayari.
12:52His goal against West Ham was his first for Albion
12:54since his arrival from Swedish club AIK in 2023.
12:57How impressive was the midfielder on the day?
13:00And how impressed have you been with him since he's got back
13:02into Herzl and start at XI?
13:04Yeah, he's been very good, very good, Matt.
13:08In fact, it's probably one of my favourite stories of the season,
13:11to be honest.
13:12He came from not much was expected of him, if I'm honest, this year.
13:16I thought at the beginning of the campaign he'd be sent out
13:20on another loan, especially when Brighton spent so much money
13:23bolstering their midfield as well.
13:26And he had a loan last season in the Championship with Blackburn
13:31and then Coventry.
13:34And, yeah, there was nothing in those performances with those two teams
13:39to suggest that he could have a major impact on Brighton this season.
13:43But he came out with a quote at the beginning of the season.
13:47He said, look, I don't care who Brighton signed.
13:49I don't care how much money they spend.
13:51Nobody's going to work harder than me.
13:53Nobody's going to try harder than me.
13:55And Sam was speaking about players taking their opportunities
13:58with Ruta being injured.
14:02And I just think Ayari, from the start,
14:05he's just taken his opportunity this season.
14:07And, again, credit to Herzl as well.
14:10He spotted something in him in pre-season.
14:13He had a good tour when they went over to Japan for pre-season.
14:18And he impressed in a couple of the friendlies over there
14:21and obviously made a good impression in the training
14:23and in the pre-season training camps.
14:25And Herzl spotted something in him that he thought, you know, I can use.
14:29And he's a very energetic player.
14:32He runs all day, which is so vital in the midfield,
14:35in the Premier League these days.
14:37But he's got a good touch, good passing, very good technically.
14:42And as you saw against West Ham, he can pick out a goal as well.
14:46And he's performing at a consistently high level.
14:50I'd still say there's room for improvement.
14:52You know, he's obviously still very young and he can get better and better.
14:56But he's playing well for his country.
14:58He's playing well at international level and for Brighton as well.
15:02So he's been a real success story this season.
15:04And if Brighton do manage to get over the line
15:07and get a European place this season,
15:10he would have been a major factor in that.
15:13So, yeah, full credit to him. Really good.
15:16Absolutely. Long way it continue.
15:18Post-match, West Ham boss Graham Potter held a,
15:21what can only be described as an incredibly bizarre press conference
15:24where he spoke about swearing and not being a robot.
15:26Loved it.
15:27Yeah, very odd.
15:29Sam, decipher what he was on about.
15:32And how was he received?
15:34Obviously, he left him under quite a cloud, didn't he,
15:37when he departed Brian for Chelsea.
15:39Was it a warm welcome he got?
15:40Well, I wouldn't say a warm welcome,
15:42but it certainly wasn't as bad as it was when he came back with Chelsea.
15:46That was obviously quite a hostile reception he got then.
15:49So I think it's toned down a little bit,
15:51but there were some jizz from the home fans when he arrived
15:55and when he departed the pitch at the end of the game.
15:56But it was a dreadful result for West Ham,
15:59whose dismal run extended to seven games without a win.
16:06Post has just taken us 13 points from 14 games since replacing Julian.
16:09Lopetegui in January.
16:13So, yeah, so it's not going well, it's safe to say.
16:16And he really is feeding the pressure by the sounds of his post-match comments.
16:20And he said, we're unable to sustain what we need to do to win games
16:23in the Premier League at the moment.
16:25He was clearly fuming about the result.
16:27And he said, there's a physical requirement in the league.
16:30You have to be so fit and so physically strong to see our winning situation
16:33in difficult places, like Goodison Park, like Anfield,
16:36and here at the Amex Stadium.
16:38So we're not able to see it.
16:39So everything is focused on that.
16:40It's a shame because there were lots of good things,
16:41but you can't take any solace because of the result.
16:44He said, the pain is pretty hard.
16:46The lads are devastated.
16:47We're all devastated.
16:48And you can't speak about the positives because no one wants to hear them.
16:51He was actually asked by Henry at Sussex World
16:56what he thought of Brighton's game plan and what he was like to be back at the Amex.
17:00And he said, whenever you win, you're a genius and you have all of these game plans.
17:03I don't know.
17:03I can't speak about Brighton was his sharp response.
17:07So, yeah, he didn't want to dwell too much on that at all.
17:10And he kind of just said that congratulations to Brighton,
17:13but we're suffering as West Ham players and other fans.
17:16So he didn't understandably want to talk about other things apart from West Ham, obviously.
17:22He said, of course, I'm going to be frustrated.
17:23He's not a robot.
17:24He's a human being.
17:26He gives everything to what he's trying to do.
17:28Of course, he's going to be upset and frustrated.
17:30And he has to try and speak calmly in these interviews,
17:33but it's not how he's feeling inside.
17:34He said, if you want me to swear, I can swear, basically.
17:37So, yeah, absolute rollercoaster of an interview, really, from Graham Potter.
17:42And he clearly is feeling the pressure and probably understandably so
17:45with the results the way they are.
17:47And, yeah, I think when he was at Brighton,
17:49he obviously got a lot of stick for perhaps being two to the point
17:52and not showing enough emotion.
17:54I think there's a bit of that Chelsea as well.
17:55And he said, yeah, well, I think he said he couldn't really win.
17:59However, he was in these interviews where he was kind of like angry or calm
18:02and he just felt like there's no winning situation.
18:05So, yeah, he's definitely feeling the world on his shoulders at the moment,
18:08is Graham Potter.
18:09And, yeah, it's quite a fall from grace when you consider when he was at Brighton,
18:12everything was really rosy for him.
18:14And you felt like the England job could be in line for him.
18:17And he goes to Chelsea and it's gone a bit wrong there.
18:20And he's just all gone a bit downhill.
18:22So, I mean, for his sake, I hope he does pick up to what he was doing at Brighton
18:26and that brilliant run of form they had before he obviously got the move to Chelsea.
18:30It's not going too well for them at the moment.
18:32It was disappointing that Jonas didn't say, yeah, I want you to swear
18:36and to see what swear word he used.
18:37Yeah, what swear words does he have?
18:40But I have to add as well, when he said congratulations to Brighton,
18:44it was far, it wasn't a sincere congratulations.
18:48It was said through gritty teeth and a very, it wasn't sort of like sincere, but yeah.
18:55I find it quite amusing.
18:56All it took was a question from Henry to tip him over the edge.
18:58By that point, New Zealand really had enough blessing.
19:01We've all been there.
19:02We've all been there, Graham.
19:04Good work, Henry.
19:05Long way to continue.
19:05This Sunday, he sees Albion entertain Carabao Cup holders, Newcastle.
19:10The Magpies beat Ipswich Town 3-0 at St James's Park last weekend
19:13to move up to third in the Premier League and also relegate the Tractor Boys.
19:17How do you see this game going for Brighton there?
19:19And I think we say this every podcast, but it's another tough test for them.
19:22And what's the latest engine news from the Seagulls camp going into that one?
19:26Yeah, it will be a tough test, yeah.
19:28And it's interesting as well with how new...
19:32I remember Graham Potter when he took the job at West Ham.
19:34He referenced Eddie Howe to say that he had a lot of time out of the game.
19:40And then went to Newcastle and did a superb job then.
19:44And when Potter got the job at West Ham, he was hoping to repeat a similar level of success.
19:50And obviously, it hasn't quite worked out that way.
19:52Eddie Howe's done obviously very well at Newcastle.
19:55And I'm glad he's back to health and leading the team once again.
20:01And they're third in the table.
20:02They've won six of their last seven.
20:06So, they're going to be very, very strong.
20:08And they're pushing for the Champions League spots.
20:10It looks as though they'll be in Champions League football next season.
20:16So, a very tricky one for Brighton.
20:18But Brighton have beat them twice this season, both at St. James' Park.
20:22Once in the FA Cup and once in the league.
20:24And Danny Welbeck got the winner on both occasions.
20:28So, yeah.
20:30He'll be hoping to get a hat-trick of winners against Newcastle.
20:35I'm sure this weekend.
20:36But it's a big game for Brighton.
20:38And sometimes Brighton are at their best when they're up against it.
20:42When you think that they're going to win, they always seem to struggle.
20:45And when they play these top teams, they seem to raise their game and produce better football.
20:53So, I'm quite optimistic.
20:55I'm hoping that the late winner against West Ham will give everybody a lift.
20:59Give the whole club a lift as well.
21:02They've got some players coming back in as well.
21:05So, Joel Veltman was in the matchday squad against West Ham.
21:11But he didn't come on.
21:12He could potentially be a starter for this one now that he's fit.
21:17And if he plays, if Lewis Dunk plays again like he did against West Ham rather than what he did against Leicester,
21:23then Van Hecker is also likely to come back.
21:27He'll be assessed following the injury still.
21:30But he is expected to return to the starting XI as well.
21:35So, yeah.
21:36Brighton are in good shape.
