00:50 with panic and confusion as planes
00:51 hovered in the air for hours.
00:53 Passengers, flight attendants, and staff at Gatwick Airport
00:56 breathed a collective sigh of relief
00:57 as a plane touched down on the runway on Sunday night
01:00 after struggling during the storm.
01:02 One of the passengers affected wrote on social media
01:05 how a flight from Bucharest was diverted to London's Stansted
01:08 after wrestling with the extreme conditions.
01:11 "The Bucharest to Gatwick flight has finally

01:42 A horror film shot in Hastings in Brighton
01:44 and featuring a murderous puppet has been released.
01:47 The seaside slasher called Punch and directed by Andy Edwards
01:50 saw its UK digital release on Monday,
01:53 courtesy of Miracle Media.
01:55 The movie features a pulverising puppet relentlessly
01:57 terrorising the town's local youth.
02:00 Andy said, "We were scouting various seaside towns
02:02 around the South Coast and it was another film director
02:05 friend of mine, Arel Anthony-Hales,
02:07 who suggested Hastings.
02:09 He's from the town and he shot several films here,
02:11 such as folk horror film There Outside.
02:13 He showed me all the best spots and ticked all the boxes
02:15 for locations we needed.
02:17 That local connection definitely helped.
02:19 Arel's brother also shot some of our drone shots.
02:22 His sister helped with the catering
02:23 and another brother is in the film.
02:25 He also likes the slight pagan/folk horror vibe
02:28 that Hastings has, with the Jack in the Green Festival,
02:31 and that fitted our film very well."
02:34 Andy added that the film is not entirely shot in Hastings.
02:36 He said that due to logistics and permission reasons,
02:39 a few scenes were filmed in Brighton, Canberra Sands,
02:41 and Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.
02:44 During a recent visit with Immigration Minister Robert
02:46 Jenrick, Eastbourne and Wellington MP Caroline Ansell
02:50 confirmed that a further hotel will cease
02:52 to house asylum seekers.
02:53 She said, "A significant concern from our hoteliers
02:56 and hospitality industry and others
02:58 has been the continued use of our hotels for asylum seekers.
03:01 Our hotels must all be returned to their primary purpose,
03:04 and I've worked with the Home Office last year to this end."
03:07 When I met with the Immigration Minister again this week,
03:10 I was informed that another hotel will be
03:12 released in the weeks to come.
03:14 The news comes after the government
03:15 confirmed that two hotels in the town
03:17 stopped housing asylum seekers in October 2023.
03:21 The properties were part of the first wave of 50 hotels
03:23 across the country to stop taking migrants
03:25 because of the impact on Eastbourne's visitor economy,
03:28 according to MP Caroline Ansell.
03:31 Thousands of pounds had been raised
03:32 for a family who made a lucky escape following a fire
03:35 at their home in East Sussex.
03:36 Graham Milton and his seven-year-old son
03:38 were in their home with their two dogs in Marine Parade
03:41 Seaford on January the 9th when it began to burn.
03:44 Kelly Milton, Graham's wife, was out
03:46 working a night shift at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
03:49 On her fundraising page following the fire, she said,
03:51 "I could have lost my son, my husband, and our two dogs
03:54 if it wasn't for Christopher.
03:56 It could have been so much worse.
03:57 I was on my way home from work, and my husband phoned me,
04:00 saying we haven't got a home anymore.
04:02 We lost everything, and we are homeless.
04:04 I didn't take it in at first, but I was in shock.
04:06 But finally, it hit me what happened."
04:09 She said the council has put her and her family in emergency
04:11 housing in Eastbourne.
04:13 A 16-year-old girl who was arrested after a fire
04:15 at a secondary school in East Sussex
04:16 has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
04:19 East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service
04:20 said they were called at 5.42pm on Wednesday, January 17th.
04:24 Bletchington Mill School in Hove was closed on Thursday
04:27 and Friday following the blaze on Wednesday.
04:30 The teenager from Hove was arrested on suspicion of arson
04:32 with intent to endanger life shortly after the fire.
04:36 On Thursday, January 18th,
04:37 the fire service issued an update.
04:40 A spokesperson said, "There are no reports of injuries,
04:42 and everyone was quickly accounted for.
04:44 Crews using breathing apparatus and hose-drawer jets
04:47 as well as thermal imaging cameras."
04:49 At its height, six fire engines were on scene
04:51 as well as officers and other agencies.
04:54 One fire engine remained at the scene overnight
04:56 checking for hotspots.
04:58 Finally, two Sussex pubs have been named
05:00 among the top 12 most perfect pubs in the UK,
05:03 following a list published by the National Geographic.
05:06 The Baskermakers Arms in Brighton's North Lane
05:08 and the Aoif's Castle Inn in Rye
05:10 were Sussex's two pubs on the list.
05:12 Detailing the reason for the creation of the list,
05:14 the website shared, "Whatever trends come and go,
05:17 there should always be a place for proper pubs,
05:19 those iconic institutions that have been the cornerstone
05:22 of British culture for centuries."
05:24 The Baskermakers Arms has been well-received
05:26 on TripAdvisor, earning a score of 4.5 out of 5
05:29 from 360 reviews.
05:31 The Aoif's Castle Inn has also been well-received,
05:34 earning a score of 4.5 out of 5 from 744 reviews.

06:10 I'm Darren Howard, and this week I'm joined
06:12 by Sussex reporters, Sam Morton and Henry Bryant,
06:15 who cover Brighton and Hove Albion.
06:17 The Seagulls were held to a goalless draw at home
06:19 against all the Hampton Wanderers on Monday night.
06:22 It was their second consecutive stalemate in the league,
06:25 following their draw against West Ham
06:27 at the beginning of January.
06:29 We'll be reflecting on the action against the Wolves
06:31 before we look ahead to Brighton's trip
06:33 to Sheffield United in the FA Cup this weekend,
06:37 before they swiftly travel to Luton in the league
06:39 next Tuesday.
06:41 It's their ninth game unbeaten at home,
06:43 and it's for the first time in the club's top flight history.
06:46 And they go above Manchester United
06:48 into seventh place after their game.
06:50 But Sam, sum that up for us.
06:52 You were at the Amex Stadium last night.
06:54 What was the sort of feeling and the mood there?
06:57 - Yeah, it was a frustrating one for Brighton, really.
07:00 I think it had all the hallmarks
07:01 for a really exciting game to begin with.
07:05 Brighton were definitely looking to get an early goal,
07:08 as were Wolves, and they definitely,
07:10 it looked like it was gonna be a really exciting game
07:12 with end-to-end chances.
07:14 And then as the first half progressed,
07:16 Brighton really took control of the ball,
07:18 dominated possession.
07:20 But they just struggled to create clear-cut chances,
07:22 which is unlike this Brighton team, really.
07:25 And they definitely missed some key players,
07:28 like Karim Otoma, Simon Dingra,
07:30 both away with their countries.
07:32 Obviously, Sonny March still stood out.
07:35 Fatih stood out, Julio Encisa stood out.
07:36 And I think those players could have made such a difference
07:39 yesterday, I think.
07:40 But it was, yeah, as I say, it was a frustrating one
07:44 'cause they couldn't quite break the deadlock.
07:46 And whilst the score was nil-nil,
07:48 Wolves were also such a threat, especially Pedro Neto,
07:52 who was back from injury,
07:53 and he was a real thorn in Brighton's defence.
07:56 But it's a real positive, I think,
07:58 that they did manage to keep another clean sheet,
08:00 as you say, back-to-back clean sheets.
08:02 You kind of waited all of 2023 for one clean sheet
08:05 in the Premier League, and then to come at once.
08:06 So I think De Serbi and even Jason Steele,
08:11 I suppose, as well, after the game,
08:12 didn't really want to dwell on the positives as much.
08:15 They said they weren't really interested in the stats
08:18 and in the clean sheets.
08:19 I think De Serbi said it's something for journalists
08:22 to worry about, clean sheets, not for him.
08:24 He'd rather win 4-2 than draw nil-nil.
08:28 - With that, Henry, do you think it was a point gain,
08:30 or was that two points dropped?
08:33 And have there been too many draws this season?
08:37 - Well, if you have a look,
08:39 then it's been a total of eight draws
08:43 in the Premier League so far.
08:45 In terms of the fact that if this is a point gained
08:50 or two points dropped, I do think it was two points dropped.
08:53 As Sam was saying, this was, and had all the making
08:58 of a high-scoring fixture that could have been,
09:01 because the last time they played,
09:02 it was Brighton won 4-1,
09:04 and the time after that, it was a 6-0 win.
09:06 So I went down there myself, told my friend,
09:10 you should come down, it's going to be a high-scoring game,
09:13 and it ended up being a nil-nil draw.
09:15 But saying that, I think that Brighton did have
09:19 a couple of chances, Buonanotte,
09:21 especially in the first half.
09:23 It was a cleared-off-the-line sort of header
09:25 that just wasn't meant to be a sort of split decision chance
09:30 that maybe if he did kick the ball instead of headering it,
09:33 it could have been 1-0 to Brighton in the first half,
09:37 and we could be talking about
09:38 a completely different game here.
09:40 But like Sam said, we're missing so much attacking threat
09:44 at the moment through injuries and also international duty.
09:47 So for Brighton to have kept a clean sheet
09:51 and managed to kind of withheld and withhold balls,
09:57 because they did end up getting a few real good chances
10:01 here and there in the game, there was a positive in that.
10:05 - So yeah, it was frustrating,
10:06 but are you concerned though, Sam,
10:08 that they can't create these,
10:11 that they're unable to create these chances?
10:13 And what do you think about that?
10:16 - I wouldn't say it's a cause for concern.
10:18 I think I'd be more concerned if they had everyone fit
10:20 and firing and they were on the pitch and they couldn't do it.
10:22 I think the fact that they had such key players out,
10:25 there's a fair excuse, I think, for not being able to.
10:28 I think Jao Pedro was kind of everywhere on the pitch
10:30 yesterday, dropping into deeper positions
10:32 and he found him in the left wing position.
10:34 And it was almost like he was filling in
10:36 for all those injured players himself at some point.
10:40 So I think he did work really hard.
10:41 And there was one moment towards the end of the game
10:44 when he just delayed the shot.
10:46 He felt like he could have got a shot away earlier
10:48 and that was a little bit frustrating.
10:50 But I felt quite a few of the players were guilty of that.
10:53 (upbeat music)
10:56 - What have they got right defensively, Sam?
11:06 They've had two clean sheets now,
11:09 one against West Ham and then against Wolves.
11:11 What's changed, do you think?
11:14 - De Serby was actually asked the same question.
11:17 He said, it's fine margins, really.
11:21 I think they're playing in a very similar way, I think.
11:23 'Cause when you look at the season as a whole,
11:25 defensively, they've often been really solid.
11:28 And you look at Lewis Dunk and Jan-Paul van Gecke
11:31 as prime examples, they've rarely put a performance
11:34 below an eight out of 10 all season.
11:36 And yet sometimes they can concede a few goals
11:39 for no fault of their own.
11:40 It could be an unlucky bounce or superb strike.
11:44 And there's often been that.
11:45 In games at Brighton, they're leading by a few goals
11:48 and they've just conceded for a lack of concentration
11:50 at the end.
11:51 And that's definitely been a problem.
11:54 But I think on the whole, Brighton have defended,
11:57 or their defenders have played really well all season
11:59 and they have been unlucky.
12:01 I think now they're just starting to get their reward
12:05 for how brilliant they have been,
12:06 especially those two players I mentioned,
12:07 Lewis Dunk and Jan-Paul van Gecke.
12:10 Jan-Paul van Gecke in particular
12:12 has really come on leaps and bounds.
12:14 I think yesterday, you can just see how much confidence
12:16 he's playing with when he gets the ball.
12:17 He's just so composed on the ball, starting attacks.
12:21 And then when it comes to defending, he's so strong.
12:24 He really gave Heuner a really tough, tough time last night.
12:28 And you favour him in every one-on-one battle, really.
12:32 And obviously Lewis Dunk, he goes without saying,
12:34 he can say the same thing, so strong in the air,
12:37 so composed on the ball, bringing out the ball
12:40 and starting attacks.
12:41 And they're two quality players, really.
12:43 And I'm pleased that they're being rewarded now
12:45 with two back-to-back clean sheets.
12:48 - Yeah, yeah.
12:49 Yeah, for me, van Gecke, he's been sort of
12:51 the biggest positive of the season, I think.
12:54 The way he's played.
12:56 He must be pretty close to a Dutch call-up.
12:58 You would have thought, Henry, do you think?
12:59 - Yeah.
13:00 - I think so.
13:01 I think the quality shown for his kind of talent
13:05 at such a young age, it just is another credit to Brighton
13:09 and how they run their operation there.
13:12 And he's just, it's weird to think that he's just,
13:15 yeah, another gem that we've been able to kind of hone
13:19 and craft and, yeah, just become, as Sam said,
13:21 so confident, comfortable and, yeah,
13:25 clearly playing the De Serby way for Brighton over Albion.
13:30 - Yeah, yeah, no, it's really good news.
13:31 At the start of the season, I thought he would be,
13:33 you know, one of the players that may be sort of
13:35 in and around the squad, but, you know,
13:37 an Adam Webster might come back, but yeah,
13:39 van Gecke's really made it his own.
13:42 But yeah, one of the quotes that stood out after the match,
13:44 De Serby said after the game that they're targeting
13:46 a 10th place finish, which may have surprised a few fans
13:50 who had sort of higher expectations this season.
13:53 What do you think of that, Henry?
13:54 Do you think 10th is a fair target or?
13:59 - Well, I think personally, most Brighton fans
14:02 in an ideal world would like to see Brighton compete
14:05 in Europe next season.
14:07 And that wouldn't have to be in the Europa League.
14:09 That could be in the Conference League.
14:10 And the position we're in now,
14:12 seventh place in front of Man United after that draw,
14:16 looks to me like the realistic,
14:20 but also, you know, ideal way and position that we could get.
14:25 You know, I think most Brighton fans would like to see us
14:28 consistently in Europe.
14:29 And if we're able to do that and we're able to focus,
14:33 not just on, you know, in the knockout rounds
14:37 at the moment that we'll be in,
14:39 and also kind of get ourselves in the Premier League
14:42 and get some of those players back from injury,
14:44 then we've got every chance of doing that, I think.
14:47 One thing that Sam and I kind of spoke about
14:51 just before we started this was the fact
14:55 that potentially Dezerby's sort of getting
14:57 a less media attention on his players.
15:00 I think that can be important,
15:01 especially with how much has been on them
15:05 and the pressure that they may feel due to the fact
15:07 that there are so many injuries and players.
15:10 We've said throughout the whole season,
15:12 we've had to step up.
15:13 If you look at Hinshelwood,
15:14 the confidence that he played with yesterday,
15:16 I think he played really, really well.
15:18 And he was one of the players in our team
15:20 that were most likely to create that attacking chance
15:24 that could have got us the goal
15:25 and could have got us the three points in the end,
15:28 but it wasn't meant to be on the night.
15:30 So for me, I think that's quite a tactical
15:33 and well thought out response there from Dezerby.
15:36 But if you're looking at it from a Brighton fan
15:39 that takes it quite literally, perhaps,
15:41 I think that they wouldn't be too disappointed
15:45 with a 10th place finish.
15:46 But at the same time, I think they would be looking
15:49 to get into those Europa League
15:50 or even Europa Conference League positions if possible.
15:54 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:55 I think I do agree with that, Sam,
15:57 'cause I thought last season he was speaking about
16:00 when they were going for the Champions League,
16:02 he said, "Yeah, that is definitely our,
16:03 we're going for the top four this season.
16:05 That is our target."
16:07 And it's quite a contrast, isn't it?
16:09 What he said yesterday compared to how he responded
16:13 to those type of questions last season.
16:15 - Yeah, no, I agree with what Henry said
16:18 and what you said there, really.
16:19 It's, I feel it's a little bit smoke and mirrors perhaps,
16:22 or just, as Henry said,
16:24 trying to take the pressure off them a little bit,
16:25 'cause the expectations are so high.
16:28 I think maybe he's just trying to quell that a little bit.
16:31 I think obviously with the amount of plays
16:33 they've had on available, to say they could compete
16:37 for the Champions League, for example,
16:38 would probably be unrealistic.
16:40 So I think he's just trying to contain those expectations
16:46 when you consider how many kind of problems they've had
16:49 in terms of injuries and players being away,
16:51 especially this month as well.
16:52 So, but I think when these players do start to come back
16:55 and they've got kind of a fresh players
17:00 that they're fit and firing and able to play,
17:04 I think that Brighton can definitely push
17:06 for those European spots.
17:07 I think De Servi will expect that of them
17:10 behind closed doors.
17:11 I think he really will push them to achieve
17:14 as high a position as they can.
17:16 But in public, I think he's just trying to get the fans
17:18 to appreciate the context of the situation.
17:22 And if they do finish 10th,
17:24 it wouldn't be a failure of a season.
17:26 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:27 I think there'll be a different message behind closed doors
17:29 to what's going out.
17:31 De Servi's just not the sort of person
17:33 who's gonna settle for 10th, is he?
17:35 You wouldn't have thought.
17:35 So, but yeah, well, we're just gonna go for a quick break
17:39 and then we'll be discussing all things FA Cup.
17:41 So Brighton now face a trip to Sheffield United
17:46 in the FA Cup.
17:48 You're going up to Bramall Lane for that one, Sam.
17:50 Should be a good occasion.
17:53 They're showing a bit of form actually now,
17:54 Sheffield United, aren't they?
17:55 They came back against West Ham in the league last time out.
18:00 What kind of game are you expecting?
18:02 - Yeah, as you say, yeah.
18:03 Yeah, a tough game.
18:04 I think they'll definitely be buoyed
18:06 by that draw at West Ham.
18:07 It was a last gasp penalty that sealed the point.
18:12 I think it's obviously a little bit controversial as well,
18:14 'cause I think right after,
18:15 I think West Ham should have had a blatant penalty.
18:17 So they might also be counting their blessings
18:19 a little bit there.
18:21 But there's definitely signs of improvement
18:22 from Sheffield United's under Chris Wilder, 100%.
18:25 You just wonder how seriously
18:27 or how important the FA Cup will be,
18:30 considering they are still sitting rock bottom
18:32 of the Premier League.
18:33 You think that will be the priority,
18:35 keeping everyone fit for that
18:36 and doing everything they physically can
18:38 to stay in the league.
18:39 Although the FA Cup could be a way
18:41 of giving fans something to cheer about.
18:43 So I suppose it's a bit of a double-edged sword
18:45 in that sense.
18:46 And they'll definitely be going out to win the game.
18:48 It's not a foregone conclusion
18:50 that Brighton will just go there and easily win.
18:53 I don't see that at all.
18:54 But I expect Brighton to come away with a victory.
18:59 And I think they obviously have to be wary
19:01 of Sheffield United.
19:02 In fact, they have scored quite a few goals.
19:04 I think they've scored at least eight goals
19:06 in the last four games.
19:07 So they definitely are able to find the net.
19:10 I think they've just signed Ben Brewers and Diaz,
19:12 who scored in his Premier League debut
19:14 against West Ham. - Yeah, he looks good.
19:15 - Yeah, yeah, he's a good little player.
19:16 I think Brighton were actually linked with him
19:18 a couple of years ago.
19:19 So they definitely know what he can do.
19:23 So they've done their homework on him for sure.
19:25 Yeah, I think it'd be a tough game,
19:26 but one that I expect Brighton to come through and win.
19:30 - Yeah, I think McAtee always looks good as well,
19:32 Sheffield United.
19:33 He's a good-looking player as well.
19:35 So yeah, it'll be a tough one.
19:36 Do you agree, Henry?
19:37 Do you think it's gonna be a tough one?
19:38 And after coming so close in the FA Cup semi-final
19:42 last season, when they knocked out on penalties
19:44 to Man United, do you think Brighton will be
19:47 sort of priority, you know, really going for
19:49 a good FA Cup run this year?
19:51 - Well, I think that Brighton's main priority
19:55 should lie, in my opinion, on the Europa League
19:58 and doing all they can to get as far as that
20:01 in that competition as possible.
20:03 But like you were saying, Derrin,
20:05 I think that the heartbreak of the semi-final
20:09 and watching Solly March blast over the bar.
20:13 - Yeah, it was painful, isn't it?
20:14 Yeah, yeah.
20:15 - It was painful and it was a shame for the lad.
20:19 It really was a shame.
20:21 I think that for Brighton, this will be a game
20:24 that we should win.
20:27 I think we should be doing it comfortably
20:29 if we had all of our players available,
20:31 fit and ready to go.
20:33 But that's not the case.
20:34 And we've known that.
20:36 So for me, I think, as Sam was saying,
20:39 this will be a tough fixture for us.
20:40 And I think, I don't wanna jinx it,
20:43 but I think there'll be quite a few goals.
20:44 I do really think there'll be quite a few goals.
20:46 I think that Sheffield United could score early
20:50 and that will put us on the back foot
20:52 and kind of force us to get a performance
20:56 and get the result that we need.
20:57 - Yeah, well, if they run a four,
20:58 there's nothing to go by.
20:59 They obviously beat Spurs 4-2,
21:02 drew Neil Neil at West Ham,
21:03 then beat Stoke 4-2,
21:05 and then drew Neil Neil again.
21:07 Hopefully, if it follows the same pattern,
21:08 we can see another six goal thriller at Bramhall Lane.
21:11 But yeah, I think Brighton will be taking it seriously.
21:14 I think we saw from the lineup
21:15 that De Servi put out against Stoke
21:18 that he is really taking this competition seriously.
21:20 - Yeah, yeah.
21:20 - And probably just wants to go one better
21:22 after that heartbreak in the semi-final last year.
21:25 But De Servi will be going 100% to get the win.
21:30 - Yeah, yeah, no, I think you're right.
21:32 And it's, yeah, I've been to Bramhall Lane a couple of times.
21:34 It's always a good atmosphere up there as well.
21:35 So it should be a good one to go to.
