00:00:00Emmanuel Stewart you watch Danny Garcia through his amateur career. We saw him in his big win over Kendall Holt last year that got him to this stage. We know that physically he has the advantages tonight over Eric Morales. Is he mentally ready for this challenge. Jim I think he definitely is mentally ready not only a great amateur background in fact I think he was the second place guy for the 2008 Olympic team so he barely missed making the team but also the boxing that he gets at the gym in Philadelphia where he trains at the
00:00:29Hargate gym. This way he started his career. He's been training for this fight. Great boxing. I know a lot of the guys he's playing with us like the old crunk days when he was a Tommy Harris and Milton McCoy and Mike McCallum Mark Breeland with so many great fighters there. He has guys who are not that famous but the competition is so intense there. So I think he's going to be very well prepared for this fight and he has the high spirit and everything that I like a fighter going to the ring to have plus his father who's all excited too. So I feel very
00:00:59very good about him in this fight. He's got a hall of fame scalp to go after. Max Kellerman Eric Morales in his second career has been proficient winning four or five fights and he's shown a real facility for picking the right opponent. He clearly had an idea of what he could do in the stirring loss to Marcos Madonna last fall. Does he have another idea tonight? Yeah. You know he told us Eric Morales did yesterday that he thought he saw how he could beat Madonna and when his eyes swelled up early in that fight he
00:01:29he had a choice. He could pack it in or he could keep fighting. He said look I get paid the same either way. But he thought to himself I think I know how to beat him but if I don't try I'll never know for sure. He tried and he didn't win but Jim as you put it at the time he lost the fight but won the event. The question is now does he still know what he's doing or is he just in it for the money?
00:01:55Well we're going to find out when we see this fight but he wasn't just in it for the money last fall when he took on Marcos Maidana in a fight that many thought was a bad choice. It turned out not to be so bad. Let's take a look back.
00:02:10Another huge left hand by Pacquiao.
00:02:17Y pensé en mis hijos, en mi esposa, en mil temas.
00:02:21Manny wants to finish Morales right here. And the brave heart of Morales holds up but his legs go again.
00:02:28And Eric Morales shakes his head as if to say I want no more.
00:02:42No more.
00:02:43I tell Eric what he had done. I think it was to retire well in good conditions for his family.
00:02:53Eight months after the Pacquiao fight Morales lost again his fourth consecutive defeat and this time heeded his father's advice and called it quits, giving his body a chance to rest after 14 years of brutal ring wars.
00:03:06After two and a half years of eating and drinking whatever he wanted, a rejuvenated, though noticeably heavier Morales returned to the ring.
00:03:25Three straight wins over pedestrian opponents while fighting at 140 pounds or more was enough to convince Eric to call out the hardest-hitting puncher at junior welterweight, Marcos Maidana.
00:03:36They said, Eric, he's very strong. He's a very hard fighter. He's a very strong fighter. He's a very strong fighter. He's a very intelligent fighter.
00:03:43A thousand things, a thousand attributes of him. And I said, we're not talking about him.
00:03:47A lot of the print reporters and broadcast reporters who are here close to us are worried about Eric Morales' health. They believe that he's risking too much against Maidana. Is it a serious concern?
00:03:58Yes.
00:03:59I thought the matchup was a joke. And, of course, in the first round, Maidana hit Eric and Eric's eye swelled up like a softball.
00:04:11Already Eric Morales may be a one-eyed fighter.
00:04:14He's fighting this guy with one eye. So he's older, slower, in a heavier weight division. Of course, it's a recipe for disaster.
00:04:22Al inicio de la pelea, este, tenÃa mis dudas.
00:04:27¿Será este el momento donde el boxeador se tiene que retirar y no lo entiende, no lo alcanza a ver? No.
00:04:33Good right hand from Morales. Absolutely huge right hand.
00:04:37Bravo Maidana.
00:04:38It was one of those fights which very graphically reminded you that this is about craft, this is about will, this is about self-confidence.
00:04:47The aging warrior teaching the young star a thing or two about hand speed and combination punching.
00:04:55I remember thinking, Morales is timing the guy.
00:04:59Lo tuve demasiado cansado, en las esquinas, en las cuerdas. Este, y eso, eso me encantaba. Me encantaba ver como, como podÃa manejarlo.
00:05:11He just took a hard right hand shot and the old warrior fights back again. He's never known any other way.
00:05:17But by the middle rounds, Morales' eye got worse and finally closed completely.
00:05:23Tuve que batallar con mi ojo y batallar con él. Trae algunos golpes que no. Solo los imaginaba en mi mente que venÃan.
00:05:31And right now, Maidana believes that he's trying to finish the fight.
00:05:35Le pegaba, le pegaba con todo y no. Por ahà le erraba o le pegaba y no, no pasa nada. En algún momento sÃ, pensé que se agujó.
00:05:46What a courageous show by Morales. Eric Morales, unbelievable.
00:05:53Morales' Herculean effort was still not enough.
00:05:56And a right hand, and another right hand. Last-ditch effort to knock Morales out, and the old warrior stands up.
00:06:04After 12 grueling rounds, Maidana was awarded a majority decision.
00:06:08I think it was pretty clear Maidana won the fight, but it hardly mattered because Morales had already won the event.
00:06:15El Terrible, one last time.
00:06:18He fought his whole career with that same kind of spirit, and it was nice to see that that hadn't been extinguished of him.
00:06:25I showed him that I wasn't a peleador. I really returned for gusto, for ganas, for desire, for a illusion, for something real. And I plasmed it that night.
00:06:40Let's take a look at the tail of the tape now for young Danny Garcia against Eric Morales, and you're going to see all of Danny Garcia's numerical advantages on the right side of the graphic, where you're going to see that he is younger by 12 years, that he is taller by a half inch.
00:06:57He's got an arm-length advantage measured from the armpit to the end of the fist of one inch, that he weighed in a half pound under the 140-pound weight limit, and you see the 142 on the left side for Morales.
00:07:07Morales up to 155 tonight, and Danny Garcia at 152. Take a look at the weigh-in yesterday, and you heard me say earlier to Emmanuel, we know Garcia has the physical advantages in the fight.
00:07:18Look at the area above the waistband for Eric Morales. He hit the scale at 142, and when everybody waited to see if he would then try to burn off the two pounds and make weight, Morales started drinking Gatorade and made clear that he was going to pay a $50,000 penalty to Danny Garcia.
00:07:35He was going to allow himself to be stripped of the title belt. He was more or less given last fall by the WBC, and the fight now is for a vacant title, which Morales is not qualified to win.
00:07:47But he probably did himself a favor by spending the $50,000 instead of trying to burn off the two more pounds. He told us yesterday in the fighter meeting, I wasn't sweating anyway. There was no way I was going to burn off the weight. What do you make of that, Emmanuel?
00:08:01Well, it's very, very confusing to me, Jim. You know, he's trained at a place called Timoaya, which is a place, you know, when I train Helio Cesar Chavez in Mexico, Mexico City, as we know, has a high altitude.
00:08:12Then there's a place called Toluca, which is about an hour's drive, which is even higher.
00:08:16Then there's this Timoaya up there, which is when you get out of the car, you can't even hold your balance. It's very, very light air.
00:08:22So I think maybe the transition from coming here to Houston, humidity, it all could have affected his body.
00:08:28And here's Danny Garcia, trained by his father, who walks in behind him. His father is a guy who was a wannabe fighter, but could not fight because of asthma.
00:08:39Mostly everybody in his family is riddled by asthma. Somehow Danny Garcia escaped that genetic curse, and therefore he carries the family's hopes as the fighter.
00:08:49Yeah, and he's in against a guy in Morales, who was able to do some things against Maidana, who's an awkward, slower fighter.
00:08:57Danny Garcia is a young, fresh leg, much faster fighter than Marcos Maidana, more conventional.
00:09:05And if Morales doesn't really have a trick up his sleeve in this fight, it's hard to imagine how he comes away with a win.
00:09:13Emmanuel?
00:09:14And he's a body puncher by nature anyway, particularly with the left hook.
00:09:17Having seen what we saw of Morales' belly on that scale yesterday, does he become even more of a body puncher tonight?
00:09:23I don't think necessarily. I think he's just all the way around just a battle fighter at this stage of my career.
00:09:30I think he's been room prepping me for this. He's had a lot of fights as we saw on HBO.
00:09:35Never that overly spectacularly in any area, but a very balanced out fighter.
00:09:40I think all of his tools will be in great form tonight.
00:09:59Well, there are a variety of belts following Garcia into the ring, but the belt that he gets a chance to pick up tonight against Morales is one of the governing body's 140-pound title belts.
00:10:09It'll be an interesting bargaining chip for him if he can win this fight and look for bigger assignments down the road in the 140-pound weight class.
00:10:16Here's Morales.
00:10:21There were many who thought he might not be able to get past young Pablo Cesar Cano to win that title, which a governing body more or less set up for him in the fall.
00:10:49But he managed to think his way through the Cano fight quite effectively, ultimately counterpunting and outworking the younger fighter and just breaking down his confidence to win it.
00:11:01But here the question is, was Morales' $50,000 purchase of a weight advantage an indication that he's still wily and wants that advantage and is not going to torture himself to make weight because he's trying to win?
00:11:15Or is it an indication that he did not take his preparation as seriously as he had in the past?
00:11:20We're going to find out pretty early in this fight because Garcia is an aggressive fighter.
00:11:24Let's go to Michael Buffer now for the official introductions.

00:14:13ERI!
00:14:15ERI!
00:14:16EL TERRIBLE!
00:14:17MORALES!
00:14:18ERI!
00:14:19ERI!
00:14:20ERI!
00:14:21ERI!
00:14:22ERI!
00:14:23ERI!
00:14:24ERI!
00:14:25ERI!
00:14:26ERI!
00:14:27ERI!
00:14:28ERI!
00:14:29ERI!
00:14:30ERI!
00:14:31ERI!
00:14:32ERI!
00:14:33ERI!
00:14:34ERI!
00:14:35All right, gentlemen.
00:14:36All right, gentlemen, I gave your instructions
00:14:38early in the dressing room.
00:14:39I want you to obey my commands, protect yourself at all times.
00:14:41Play Olympia y Buenos Aires.
00:14:43Touch him up, good luck.
00:14:46Does Eric Morales have yet another heroic performance
00:14:50left in him, or is this young kid, Danny Garcia,
00:14:55too young, too good for the old man?
00:14:59Well, I can say this about Garcia.
00:15:01I don't think he's gonna be trying to fight
00:15:02a technical fight all night and just using his legs
00:15:05because he's not boxed Morales.
00:15:07So if Morales does have a good fight in him,
00:15:09it would be brought out tonight by Garcia
00:15:11because of the way that he fights.
00:15:13And that would help Garcia's start of profile.
00:15:16I've said of him in the past, he's a good,
00:15:19well-skilled, basic fighter, but I see no particular X-Factor.
00:15:23Emmanuel, you made a great point yesterday.
00:15:24If there's an X-Factor, it's the competition he's gotten
00:15:27in the gyms of Philadelphia.
00:15:29As well as the great amateur background that he has, too.
00:15:35He's got a great point, and he's got a great point.
00:15:38He's got a great point.
00:15:39He's got a great point.
00:15:40He's got a great point.
00:15:41He's got a great point.
00:15:42Right hand looping over the top for Morales,
00:15:45coming over the top of Danny Garcia's left jab.
00:15:47So immediately see something which probably Morales
00:15:50has incorporated into the game plan,
00:15:52countering with the right hand over the top of Danny's jab.
00:15:54There's a great point.
00:16:00But when he's got a great point,
00:16:01he's got a good point.
00:16:02We're going in the game,
00:16:04and in the game,
00:16:07then the first time we're going in in the game,
00:16:22Solid shots from Garcia.
00:16:45I mentioned Danny Garcia's left hook to the body,
00:16:48a primary weapon for him.
00:16:49He's not going to land that left hook to the body.
00:16:52That's what I'll take away.
00:16:53Meaning that he's going to counter over that
00:16:55with his right hand also,
00:16:56but if Garcia is as much quicker
00:16:59as it appears he might be...
00:17:01Yeah, but right now,
00:17:02Morales is fighting a very smart fight.
00:17:04He's bending in,
00:17:05trying to get very close before he punches.
00:17:07See, I'm surprised at his coordination.
00:17:09He's moving away from punches very well at this stage.
00:17:13Morales told us that he takes away his opponent's best weapon,
00:17:16by countering it in such a painful way for his opponent
00:17:20that his opponent doesn't go back to that weapon.
00:17:23Uh, Garcia's biggest weapon
00:17:25is his youth and reflex speed advantage.
00:17:28The way to take that away is with timing,
00:17:31and so far, Morales has tried to time Garcia,
00:17:34but the effectiveness of that timing
00:17:38has diminished as this round has worn on.
00:17:40because this round has worn on.
00:18:01Morales warming up a little bit now
00:18:03as round one comes down the stretch.
00:18:05Not a bad round for the old warrior.
00:18:11Very good left jab to Morales, too.
00:18:13KG Wiley veteran.
00:18:21All right, listen. Don't try to use your jab.
00:18:23He's counting your jab over the top with the right hand, okay?
00:18:26Fake the jab a little bit. Come back straight right hand.
00:18:28That's beautiful, Dan. Listen.
00:18:30All you got to do is step around.
00:18:32You hear me?
00:18:34Just like that. When you hit him, hit him hard.
00:18:36Listen. Lean back. Lean back.
00:18:38Lean back, baby. Lean back.
00:18:39Let's breathe.
00:18:40You hear me?
00:18:42Little bit of water.
00:18:44Here it goes.
00:18:46Little bit of Vaseline.
00:18:48Little bit.
00:18:50How's the round?
00:18:52Another one.
00:18:54Another one.
00:18:56Another one.
00:18:58Another one.
00:19:00Another one.
00:19:02Another one.
00:19:04Another one.
00:19:05Just like that for you.
00:19:06The bell rings. You're up.
00:19:09Our brilliant interpreter Jerry Olai was the voice that you heard in the corner.
00:19:12CompuBox numbers in round one.
00:19:14A measured patient round for both fighters.
00:19:16Morales was 9 of 44, including 5 out of 23 jabs.
00:19:19Garcia, only 7 of 41 by CompuBox count in round one.
00:19:24Eric Morales won the first 41 fights of his career.
00:19:27Since then, he's 11 and 7, but it's an entertaining enough 11 and 7 to have gotten him back in front of the public eye.
00:19:36At this stage, I've been very impressed with Morales, particularly his left jab.
00:19:39He gets very close and he shoots his punches off after he leads in, taking away the space for Garcia to time him.
00:19:49Well, at some point, the action's gonna heat up here.
00:19:52And when it does, and Morales starts to test young Danny Garcia, if Danny Garcia responds to that test from the old man, then we'll see what Morales has left.
00:20:03You know, Morales is the type of a guy that when you hit him, he's gonna return a punch right back.
00:20:08That's what made those great fights that he had with Pacquiao and Morales so exciting.
00:20:15Trading punches in the center of the ring.
00:20:18And you wonder if Danny Garcia's confidence has already been dented just a little bit by the performance of the older fighter.
00:20:25See, Morales leans in and gets very close and shoots little short punches from such a short distance that Garcia doesn't see him that much.
00:20:33There's no panic in Morales. When Garcia's speed advantage started to tell, there was no panic whatsoever.
00:20:40Morales regained control at the end of the last round and some of his old tricks.
00:20:46Well, understands as well as any fighter that timing trumps speed.
00:20:51And he knows how to time his punches.
00:20:55Good left hook by Morales. Right hand to the body.
00:20:58He's winning the jabbing contest, too.
00:21:06Morales again lands his jabs.
00:21:08Three-punch combination for Morales. Nothing back from Danny Garcia.
00:21:14Right hand over the top for Morales. Good body shot from Garcia.
00:21:17There's a good left hook for Danny.
00:21:21There's a good left hook.
00:21:23There's a good right hand.
00:21:24There's a good right hand.
00:21:25There's a good right hand.
00:21:26Morales pushing Garcia back with the jab.
00:21:31Three straight uppercuts with the right hand.
00:21:33Morales starting to get the crowd into the fight.
00:21:36Morales is fighting a very, very good fight.
00:21:38Much better than I expected.
00:21:40Short punches, very good defense.
00:21:42He hasn't been caught with a clean punch.
00:21:43And he gets very close before he throws his punches, as I've said before.
00:21:46Good quick left hook inside for Garcia.
00:21:49It landed well enough that Morales nodded it down.
00:21:56Double left hand by Morales.
00:21:59And just to underline the point that Max Kellerman made,
00:22:02it looks as though the $50,000 price for a two-pound weight advantage
00:22:07and not having to burn those last two pounds off
00:22:10were a bargain for Eric Morales.
00:22:14That's it, man.
00:22:19Beautiful.
00:22:20Listen.
00:22:21Step around the right feet.
00:22:22Don't let him, don't let him, don't let him, don't give him the chance.
00:22:25With the jab, listen.
00:22:27When he throws the jab, listen.
00:22:29Step around with your right feet.
00:22:30Don't catch the jab.
00:22:31Work die.
00:22:32Work die, work die, work die.
00:22:33Take a deep breath, take a deep breath.
00:22:34Work die, bro.
00:22:35Just work die.
00:22:36You heard what I say?
00:22:37Yes, sir.
00:22:38Keep stepping around.
00:22:39Listen.
00:22:40Stay funky.
00:22:41He's moving.
00:22:42Second round, you won.
00:22:43Now, we need another one just the same.
00:22:46A little water.
00:22:49What?
00:22:52More angles, more angles, and try the uppercut.
00:22:54The uppercut, you got very well.
00:22:55Got in very well.
00:22:56Just keep going again.
00:22:57Bring him up.
00:23:00Okay.
00:23:01Let's go second.
00:23:02CompuBox numbers in the second round.
00:23:04Listen to this.
00:23:05Eric Morales, 22 out of 53,
00:23:08including a 17-3 jab connect advantage so far in the fight.
00:23:12Garcia was 15 out of 45,
00:23:13started to do some good work down the stretch of that round
00:23:16with his left hook and the right hand over the top.
00:23:29Morales is controlling the kind of linear fight with that jab.
00:23:32Yes, he is.
00:23:33And Garcia is having success when he tries to get around it,
00:23:35looping the shots to the body.
00:23:37But Garcia's punches are looping punches.
00:23:39And so far, he hasn't been able to really
00:23:41land those shots that much.
00:23:43Morales is catching most of the shots on his elbow.
00:23:45And he's getting off by leaning in close
00:23:47and then a short jab, which is very beautiful
00:23:49the way he's shooting it.
00:23:50And then he shoots his own short lead right hand.
00:23:53Morales at this stage of his career
00:23:57does not have knockout power.
00:23:59Probably not even the accumulation kind.
00:24:01But he does have enough power to keep you honest in there.
00:24:07Like that.
00:24:19Now Garcia starts to step up and jab with Morales.
00:24:23And you need to shoot some, and Garcia needs to shoot punches
00:24:27up through the center a lot, too.
00:24:29He's winging all of his shots to the outside,
00:24:31and Morales got a pretty good defense
00:24:33and he's catching most of those shots.
00:24:35And he needs to mix them up, jab a little bit more,
00:24:37and shoot some uppercuts with his left hand,
00:24:39or right hand through the center.
00:24:41Morales won a strategic battle in the sense that
00:24:43Garcia, at the weigh-in and the stare-down,
00:24:47felt that he was the bigger, stronger, younger fighter.
00:24:50Fresher, faster fighter.
00:24:52And he's not imposing himself physically on Morales
00:24:55like he said he would.
00:24:57Morales has already dissuaded him
00:24:59from trying to do that, it seems.
00:25:05Morales using the jab to keep Garcia back far enough
00:25:08to limit the damage from Garcia's power shots.
00:25:10Good left hook from Danny Garcia.
00:25:18There Garcia got in a left hook to the body.
00:25:21Morales comes back from straight right upstairs.
00:25:23A jab by Garcia.
00:25:30Garcia started to make some more contact in this round.
00:25:32Garcia's gonna have to keep stepping up
00:25:34to pace the way he's going right now.
00:25:36Short take the distance, driving Morales into the ropes.
00:25:39Hitting him with a hard right hand,
00:25:41and another right hand shot.
00:25:43Right hand over the top catches Morales again.
00:25:45Big rally by Danny Garcia.
00:25:47Let's see if these punches are hurting Morales.
00:25:49Garcia changed the distance in this round
00:25:54by a couple of inches, got a little closer to Morales,
00:25:57and started landing those shots.
00:25:59Exactly.
00:26:11Time!
00:26:13Big comeback in the third round by Danny Garcia.
00:26:15And there is Eric's wife Andrea Morales.
00:26:19Andrea Morales.
00:26:21We asked Eric yesterday,
00:26:23who has a burgeoning business in Tijuana
00:26:26and increasingly varied interests,
00:26:28which we understood in Mexican politics.
00:26:30And Eric's cagey.
00:26:32He likes to give you the enigmatic answer,
00:26:34but he smiled and said maybe.
00:26:35Good, I'm good.
00:26:47Relax, relax.
00:26:49No, no, no.
00:26:51Let's go, let's go.
00:26:52Let's go quickly.
00:26:53Here you see probably which is the best punch
00:26:55of the fight right here.
00:26:56A beautiful right hand shot by Garcia.
00:26:58Once he has stepped up the pace,
00:27:00close the distance on Morales.
00:27:01Morales doesn't have the time
00:27:03to time his punches to get away.
00:27:07Let's go, coach.
00:27:08Vamanos.
00:27:11Zombie box numbers in three.
00:27:12Garcia was 29 of 70.
00:27:14Morales, 11 of 43.
00:27:16Garcia with a big advantage on power connects.
00:27:18Harold, how do you have it through three?
00:27:20Two rounds to one, 29-28.
00:27:22Eric Morales.
00:27:23You know, Jim, in rounds one and two,
00:27:25Danny Garcia just gave it away
00:27:26by waiting too long.
00:27:27I mean, you know, you fight an old guy like that,
00:27:29you just don't stand back and wait.
00:27:31You got to take it to him.
00:27:32In round three, Danny Garcia stepped up
00:27:34through that wild-winging right hand.
00:27:36You know, he stunned Eric Morales,
00:27:38came close to a 10-8 round without a knockdown.
00:27:40Big third round for Garcia.
00:27:42Two to one, Morales.
00:27:53I felt Max had it right in saying
00:27:55that Garcia's big adjustment in round three
00:27:57was simply to step in closer to mount his attack.
00:27:59Do you agree?
00:28:00Yeah, just to step up the attack,
00:28:01because he's fighting too measured
00:28:03and laying back too much.
00:28:05Morales was systematically, I think,
00:28:07picking him apart with the jab
00:28:08and a little short, straight right hand.
00:28:10But by picking up the tempo,
00:28:12just that alone, no particular punch,
00:28:14just setting the pace a little bit faster.
00:28:16Left hook for Morales.
00:28:17Moments ago, Garcia landed the looping right
00:28:19over the top again.
00:28:20And also, I felt closing the distance
00:28:22just a little bit, Emmanuel.
00:28:27Where Morales wasn't keeping him on the outside
00:28:29at the end of the jab.
00:28:31Now it appears that Garcia's effective looping right hands
00:28:35have re-energized Morales
00:28:37and given him new incentive to move forward in the fight.
00:28:39Suddenly, he takes over again.
00:28:40Good right hand to the body for Morales.
00:28:42Making Garcia miss.
00:28:44When the old man works his jab,
00:29:00it sets up a lot of good stuff for him.
00:29:02Yes, and he's boxing beautiful, too.
00:29:04I just wish that Garcia could throw a straight right hand
00:29:06and it would help a lot.
00:29:08But the straight punches are coming toward Morales.
00:29:11Reminiscent of what he did in the Maidana fight,
00:29:14you saw the Garcia rally in the last round
00:29:16and the old competitor comes back.
00:29:21Blocking Garcia's left with his right glove there.
00:29:26Now Garcia finds it.
00:29:27Straight right hand.
00:29:36Well, we had a boxing match
00:29:37for the first couple of rounds.
00:29:39It's two REACI locks.
00:29:42It appears from moment to moment
00:29:43that a fight might break out.
00:29:44Right hand there.
00:29:48A position there moves.
00:29:49It appears from moment to moment
00:29:50that a fight might break out.
00:29:56Oh!
00:30:01A PLAT ON HEALTHI SPENT
00:30:052!
00:30:06accomplishment
00:30:08good stiff left jab by Eric Morales was the last landed punch in that round
00:30:16I don't know what's going on but you can't lose your motivation like that you can't fucking lose
00:30:24it like that work the notes work the notes what you think you heard what I say you can't you can't
00:30:31lose your motivation don't hold this breath don't hold this breath breathe then work this side
00:30:37work this side work this side don't don't just go around and make any bleed throw everything up front
00:30:47straight shots straight shots to the plexus everything everything you hit to the bottom
00:30:51you hit them you caught them you're just not finishing off look to finish off okay
00:30:55leave it like that
00:31:03the
00:31:16jeb's in the fight through the fourth round I told you that Morales is winning the jabbing contest
00:31:2234 out of 115 22 out 94 for Garcia they both connected on 15 landed punches in the fourth
00:31:29and you heard Danny's father saying,
00:31:30I don't know what's going on,
00:31:32but you can't lose your motivation like that.
00:31:34Yeah, he's got to fight with more intensity
00:31:36and pick up the pace.
00:31:37It's that simple.
00:31:38It's just he's waiting too much.
00:31:39He's got to be more physical, busier,
00:31:42take advantage of his youth.
00:31:44Well, yeah, the youth, the speed, the reflex.
00:31:46It's like he's the Cobra,
00:31:47and Morales is the snake charmer.
00:31:49And he's got a snake charmer in front of him,
00:31:52and the snake charmer is working his magic,
00:31:54at least in three of the rounds.
00:31:56Left hook upstairs by Morales.
00:31:58They were actually trading left hooks,
00:32:00and both landed.
00:32:02Harold Lederman, I know that this is one of those fights
00:32:05where the governing body is doing the open scoring thing
00:32:08after the fourth and eighth rounds.
00:32:09I didn't catch it. Did you?
00:32:11Yeah, yeah, Jim.
00:32:12They're giving the scores, the official scores,
00:32:14to the corners.
00:32:15Not to the public, not to us, just to the corners.
00:32:18Were they in sync with your score?
00:32:19I don't know. They didn't give it to us.
00:32:21Oh, they didn't give it to us. Okay.
00:32:22Jim, Morales left hook seemed to momentarily
00:32:24shake Garcia up.
00:32:26I saw it.
00:32:27But for once, they're not reading the official scores
00:32:29to the house. That's a good idea.
00:32:34Garcia with the left hook.
00:32:39It's not enough.
00:32:40I think at this point, Morales may be ahead
00:32:41on the scorecard.
00:32:42Well, I think it appears, Emmanuel,
00:32:43that Danny's punches really had steam and fire only in the third round.
00:32:58Yeah, but he slowed down.
00:32:59It's just really the rounds, when he picks up his volume
00:33:02on the rounds, that he wins.
00:33:04And if he doesn't punch enough during the rounds,
00:33:06he's gonna lose those rounds.
00:33:08Looks like Morales intentionally went to the ropes there
00:33:10to lure Garcia in for a counter.
00:33:13Stop!
00:33:13Right when Garcia gets the idea that he might punch,
00:33:24Morales throws three shots.
00:33:25We've been told that the official scorecards that were brought
00:33:27to Danny Garcia's corner showed Garcia winning the fight three rounds
00:33:40to one on two cards, and even at two rounds apiece on the third.
00:33:44You're off his hip.
00:33:45You're coming right here, all right?
00:33:47Got to keep him up, all right?
00:33:48That might be slightly different from Harold's card.
00:33:50But you're coming off his hip.
00:33:51We'll follow it as we go along.
00:33:52And you heard referee Lawrence Cole warning Danny Garcia
00:33:57to keep him up.
00:33:59I think 2-2 is fair.
00:34:01If anyone has an advantage so far,
00:34:02I think Morales has a slight one, three to one.
00:34:08Not according to the officials.
00:34:11Well, according to what we heard,
00:34:13that was reported from Garcia's Corner.
00:34:15Who knows if they have it exactly right?
00:34:16Right.
00:34:20Listen.
00:34:21Listen.
00:34:22Listen to me again.
00:34:23Tune in Saturday, April 21,
00:34:24for Floyd Mayweather speaking out.
00:34:26A half hour of unadulterated Floyd Mayweather
00:34:28sitting down for a one-on-one interview
00:34:30with noted professor, historian, and pop culture expert
00:34:33Michael Eric Dyson.
00:34:34April 28, on World Championship Boxing,
00:34:36Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson meet again.
00:34:38With light heavyweight supremacy on the line,
00:34:40their first fight ended in dramatic fashion
00:34:41with Hopkins unable to continue due to a shoulder injury.
00:34:44Dawson was initially awarded a TKO victory.
00:34:47That was in California.
00:34:48The fight was later ruled a no contest.
00:34:50Both fighters look to settle the score
00:34:52in next month's rematch.
00:34:53And also that night, heavyweight prospect Seth Mitchell
00:34:56looks to stay undefeated when he faces Chaz Witherspoon.
00:34:59You hear what I say?
00:35:01Keep your rhythm going.
00:35:02Just keep your rhythm.
00:35:03Keep your hands up.
00:35:04Work the body, Dan.
00:35:07We saw Seth Mitchell, who is in the early stages
00:35:10of his ascendancy as a possible heavyweight contender
00:35:13on the undercard of Conn Peterson in Washington, D.C.
00:35:16And Emmanuel, for this stage of his development,
00:35:18Seth Mitchell looked doggone good.
00:35:20I like him very much.
00:35:21He's fundamentally a sound fighter,
00:35:23and he lets punches go.
00:35:24He's a very aggressive guy, throws punches
00:35:26whenever he sees an opportunity.
00:35:28I think he's very good for the heavyweight division, too.
00:35:30And Emmanuel, do you think Danny Garcia should be fighting
00:35:44at a faster pace to try to force Eric Morales
00:35:46to more of a struggle?
00:35:47Yes, he should force Eric to get out of his comfort zone
00:35:49that he's fighting in.
00:35:51And I think that's the key to the fight,
00:35:53is not any one particular punch.
00:35:54Just to stay busy.
00:35:56Well, I mean, we saw this with Kirkland and Molina, too.
00:35:59When the more cerebral, when the less cerebral fighters
00:36:02tries to think with the quicker thinking fighter,
00:36:05it's a problem.
00:36:06Morales moves slower than Garcia,
00:36:08but his mind works quicker.
00:36:10As soon as he sees Garcia's attention,
00:36:12he disrupts his rhythm.
00:36:13Yeah, and you know, and also, Morales' punches
00:36:15are shorter and more accurate.
00:36:16Whereas Garcia, even though he's young,
00:36:18he has a tendency to loop his punches a little wider.
00:36:21Oh, good left hook by Danny Garcia.
00:36:23And a jab that knocks Morales' head back.
00:36:26Suddenly, because of the power of those two punches,
00:36:28Danny Garcia has a physical edge in the fight.
00:36:38Danny, body!
00:36:40Kill the body, Danny!
00:36:41Kill the body!
00:36:47Hit that body, Danny!
00:36:48The body!
00:36:49Hit that body!
00:36:52Overhead!
00:36:53Hit the body, then come on!
00:36:55Hit that body!
00:36:56Overhead!
00:36:57Overhead!
00:36:58Overhead!
00:36:59This is what Garcia should have been maybe a round of two earlier.
00:37:04Overhead!
00:37:04Pressuring Morales.
00:37:06Morales has slowed down considerably in the round.
00:37:08Garcia landed two of the right hands over the top,
00:37:11and that seemed to have brought Morales more or less to a halt.
00:37:14Now Eric tries to fight back off the ropes.
00:37:18But that right hand to the body from Garcia really opened up Morales upstairs.
00:37:24Good left hook by Garcia as they trade punches.
00:37:29Morales trying to come alive again.
00:37:33Stop! Stop! Stop!
00:37:35That's what you mentioned, Jim, throughout his career.
00:37:37When Morales is hit, he gets two or three back in of his own.
00:37:40That's why a fight may break out.
00:37:42The hallmark of a great champion.
00:37:53A minute ago, he was in trouble.
00:37:55Now he tries to stalk Garcia.
00:38:02Good faith by Morales.
00:38:04Faded with the right, landed the left.
00:38:10He's in trouble.
00:38:11Time!
00:38:13Jekyll and Hyde round.
00:38:15Crowd liked it.
00:38:18Listen.
00:38:19I don't want that.
00:38:20I don't want that myself anymore.
00:38:22You don't need to do the point.
00:38:24Listen, I want you to.
00:38:25You need air?
00:38:26He's trying to see if you get wind in.
00:38:27And now he's trying to come back at you.
00:38:29Breathe.
00:38:30Let's breathe.
00:38:31Take a deep breath.
00:38:32Let's breathe.
00:38:33Rinse out.
00:38:34Breathe.
00:38:36Close your eyes.
00:38:38Close.
00:38:38Come on.
00:38:40How are you doing?
00:38:41Good?
00:38:46Don't let him go.
00:38:46Don't let him go.
00:38:49You got to go.
00:38:49Here you see Garcia just really power punching himself his way
00:38:56through Morales with a powerful left hook.
00:38:59And then here's a right hand again this time.
00:39:01And just physically overpowering with his youth and power
00:39:04at this stage.
00:39:05And this is what he has to continue to do.
00:39:06He's going to go.
00:39:09Round six.
00:39:10A good example of what Danny Garcia will want to do in the fight.
00:39:14He was 35 and 82 in the round.
00:39:16He landed 22 power shots.
00:39:18Several of them were hard punches that hurt Morales.
00:39:22And, Harold, how do you have it through six?
00:39:23I get you.
00:39:24I've got a 58-56, four rounds to two, Eric Morales.
00:39:28You know what's funny?
00:39:29In rounds three and six, Danny Garcia was tremendous.
00:39:32They did hard shots, really big punches that could have
00:39:34knocked out Morales, Morales takes a heck of a punch.
00:39:37But the other four rounds, Danny Garcia just laid back, laid back,
00:39:41and let Morales take it to him.
00:39:42Morales, I thought, just outboxed him through the, you know,
00:39:45the four rounds that I gave Morales.
00:39:474-2, Eric Morales.
00:39:50That's a good scorecard.
00:39:52Three to three would also be fine.
00:39:53It's a very close fight.
00:39:54Right hand over the top for Morales.
00:40:01Garcia trying to regain the command he had through the first half
00:40:05of the last round.
00:40:09Another concerted effort to make that left hook work to the body.
00:40:13Morales is really bringing his right arm down against his ribcage
00:40:16to try to block it.
00:40:18That's why Garcia's been going lower and lower with the punch,
00:40:20and that's why he got worn by Lawrence Cole.
00:40:27Once again, Morales is elbowed down at his waistband,
00:40:30trying to block the left hook.
00:40:39Good body shot to the right hand by Morales.
00:40:41When Morales didn't make weight,
00:40:43the question as to whether he still had it
00:40:47or he didn't take his training seriously
00:40:49because maybe finally he's just in it for a paycheck,
00:40:52Morales has already answered.
00:40:54He's in it to win it.
00:40:58Now the question is, halfway through this fight
00:41:01and a close fight, can he?
00:41:03Or will youth start to take over here?
00:41:05Four straight jabs by Garcia,
00:41:08then he got in the left hook to the body.
00:41:25Stop!
00:41:26Don't punch him, step back.
00:41:31Oh, yeah!
00:41:32Oh!
00:41:33Oh, yeah!
00:41:34Oh, yeah!
00:41:35Oh, yeah!
00:41:36Oh, yeah!
00:41:37Oh, yeah!
00:41:38Oh, yeah!
00:41:39Oh, yeah!
00:41:44While you're looking at this fight,
00:41:46and in case you joined us late,
00:41:49when we get to the end of the round,
00:41:51we're going to take you back to see what happened
00:41:52in the 10th round of the first fight here
00:41:53between Carlos Molina and James Kirkland.
00:41:56And we're going to lay out and let you hear it natural sound,
00:42:00and I'll point out that it takes place
00:42:02in the 10th round of a fight which, by our lights,
00:42:05Molina was winning and appeared to have the advantages in
00:42:08as he cruised toward victory.
00:42:10But Kirkland came on in the 10th round,
00:42:11and now we'll show you what happened from there.
00:42:14So, let's go.
00:42:201, 2, 3, 4, 5...
00:42:28fucking kidding me?
00:42:296, 7, 8, okay?
00:42:31Yeah.
00:42:32Bet your corner.
00:42:35Bet your corner.
00:42:37Bet your corner.
00:42:38Bet your corner.
00:42:40You got him, bro. You got him.
00:42:43Give me that stool. Sit.
00:42:45There's no bell yet. There's no bell yet.
00:42:47There's no bell. Get up.
00:42:50Stop the fight.
00:42:52The ring, the corner, and then enter the ring, okay?
00:42:57He entered the ring during that count.
00:43:01California referee John Shirley
00:43:03issuing a disqualification of Carlos Molina,
00:43:06awarding the fight to James Kirkland.
00:43:08We told you the scorecards.
00:43:10Moretti had Carlos Molina had 88-83.
00:43:12Sutherland had Molina had 87-84.
00:43:14Harold Letterman had it 89-82.
00:43:17Gail Van Hoy of Texas,
00:43:19whose scorecards have often been called into question in the past,
00:43:22had Kirkland winning the fight 86-85,
00:43:25which seems to us unreasonable.
00:43:27Now, here's Harold's card to this point in the fight
00:43:30between Danny Garcia and Derek Morales,
00:43:32and we're in round eight.
00:43:34And not to belabor the point,
00:43:50because we really want to focus on this fight,
00:43:52but I can't help asking myself,
00:43:54if Shirley was going to disqualify Molina
00:43:57because his corner man entered the ring,
00:43:59why didn't he do it at the moment
00:44:00when the corner man entered the ring?
00:44:01Instead of telling him to get out of the ring
00:44:03and finishing the count
00:44:04and walking across the ring and doing something else.
00:44:06Well, it was very confusing.
00:44:07It wasn't immediately clear
00:44:08if it was a slip or a knockdown.
00:44:10No one quite knew what was going on,
00:44:12including Kirkland and Molina.
00:44:14The corner entered the ring
00:44:15when they thought the round was over.
00:44:17Technically, yes, they were in
00:44:19while it was still going on
00:44:20because the count was going on,
00:44:21but it bought Molina no advantage.
00:44:24Molina would have beaten the count.
00:44:25He did beat the count.
00:44:26He was ready to continue.
00:44:27The round was over anyway.
00:44:29Bad judgment.
00:44:30And two final points.
00:44:31Number one,
00:44:32the referee refused to interview with us,
00:44:34so he refused to tell you boxing fans
00:44:36why he did what he did.
00:44:37And all credit to James Kirkland
00:44:39and his trainer, Ann Wolfe.
00:44:41They told the truth in the post-fight interview.
00:44:43They acknowledged the truth,
00:44:44and they also said
00:44:45they would give Molina renack.
00:44:46Well, they were robbed of the chance
00:44:48to win fair and square.
00:44:51And they may have.
00:44:52Kirkland was coming on,
00:44:53just scored a knockdown.
00:44:54All right, let's go back to this one.
00:44:55Emmanuel, what's been happening in this round?
00:44:57Well, for the most part,
00:44:58I feel that Garcia's fighting too tactical.
00:45:01He's waiting too much.
00:45:02And as Harold was saying on his scorecard,
00:45:04I have Morales slowly maybe edging ahead in the fight.
00:45:08And winning this round, too?
00:45:09Yeah, I think Garcia's fighting for a young fighter
00:45:11with all of the size, advantage, everything.
00:45:13He's fighting too slow, and his punches are winging.
00:45:16He's punching too much on the outside of the elbows.
00:45:18Everything is looping.
00:45:20And Morales' defense,
00:45:21he's catching most of those shots on his elbows.
00:45:24Hard right hand by Morales,
00:45:27and now Garcia comes back with a shot of his own.
00:45:36Danny's starting to throw to the body with the right hand
00:45:38because Morales has been so concerted
00:45:40in blocking the left-hand body shot.
00:45:46Straight right hand down the pipe lands for Garcia.
00:45:48He's landed some clean shots in the last 30 seconds.
00:46:00And here we go again.
00:46:04Come on!
00:46:05Come on!
00:46:06Give the water!
00:46:07It's here!
00:46:08Breathe!
00:46:09Breathe!
00:46:10Breathe!
00:46:11Breathe!
00:46:12Okay.
00:46:13Okay.
00:46:14Okay.
00:46:15Come on back.
00:46:16Take this guy.
00:46:17Don't cover his hands.
00:46:18Take this guy.
00:46:19Go to the body.
00:46:20He's jumping back.
00:46:21When he jumped back, straight right hand.
00:46:22Catch him going back with his hands down.
00:46:23Throw your finger a little further out.
00:46:24You're throwing your shoulder too short.
00:46:25Good angles.
00:46:26Good angles.
00:46:27Good angles.
00:46:28And get the right hand in.
00:46:29The young kid can't handle you.
00:46:36Come on.
00:46:37He's got no other hand in.
00:46:38Come on.
00:46:39Come on.
00:46:40Come on.
00:46:41Okay.
00:46:42Come on back.
00:46:43Take this guy.
00:46:44Don't cover his hands.
00:46:45Take this guy.
00:46:46Go to the body.
00:46:47He's jumping back.
00:46:48When he jumped back, straight right hand.
00:46:49Catch him going back with his hands down.
00:46:50Throw your finger a little further out.
00:46:51You're throwing your shoulder too short.
00:46:52Good angles.
00:46:53Good angles.
00:46:54And get the right hand in.
00:46:55The young kid can't handle you.
00:46:58Come on.
00:46:59He's got no head movement.
00:47:00The kid has no head movement.
00:47:01He's there ready for you to take him.
00:47:06CompuBox numbers in eight.
00:47:08Morales, 20 out of 56.
00:47:09Garcia, 20 out of 73.
00:47:13Garcia with the advantage of power shots.
00:47:15Morales landed more jabs.
00:47:18Harold Edelman's scorecard is now even through eight.
00:47:23Garcia describes himself as a boxer puncher.
00:47:26But when he's more of a puncher boxer, he has greater success.
00:47:37This pace right here tends to favor Morales.
00:47:40Yep.
00:47:41He's more of a puncher.
00:47:44Emmanuel Stewart with Timothy Bradley choosing to fight at 147 pounds and no telling whether
00:47:53he'll come back to this division.
00:47:54Is the monetary goal in the 140-pound division to fight the winner of Amir Khan versus Lamont
00:47:58Peterson May 19th?
00:47:59I would definitely say so, but I was, well, at least I read on the internet there was even
00:48:04talk of Morales possibly being an opponent for Floyd Mayweather if he won.
00:48:11I'm not sure that would follow.
00:48:12I don't know how.
00:48:13Yeah, I'm trying to have to wait, so I'm trying to figure that out too.
00:48:15Morales-Marquez should happen before those two guys retire at some point.
00:48:20Although Morales said yesterday that he doesn't think Marquez wants the fight.
00:48:26Meanwhile, this fight is still up for grabs it seems, and Garcia in recent rounds is doing
00:48:35better.
00:48:36Here's a good hard body shot with the left hand.
00:48:39He's been hard-pressed to get him in because Morales is so devoted to trying to block it
00:48:43with his right elbow and arm.
00:48:45Morales has been impressive so far given his age and the circumstances and everything,
00:48:50fighting above his natural weight class where he was most effective.
00:48:53But because Garcia really hasn't brought the fight full force as Maidana did, this lacks
00:48:59the drama of Morales-Maidana or even Morales-Kano.
00:49:02Morales-Kano.
00:49:28Left hook by Garcia finished that exchange.
00:49:31And he should have been right back on Morales right away instead of letting him rest and
00:49:34recoup and then recharge himself all over again.
00:49:52Morales is very vulnerable right now if Garcia would step up the pace.
00:49:56And it's not that he's playing, sitting back, trying to just log Garcia in.
00:50:01He's actually getting tired now.
00:50:02His age is beginning to show.
00:50:05Garcia's accuracy is increasing.
00:50:07It would be better if people couldn't wringing the shots on the side so much.
00:50:10Time!
00:50:11Garcia's throwing more and better combinations as the fight goes on.
00:50:15We're losing the damn fight.
00:50:22All the rounds.
00:50:23They gave him all the rounds.
00:50:24Only one, one, one dunk has given you.
00:50:27All the rounds are lost.
00:50:28This son of a bitch, you got to finish him.
00:50:30Even if you finish the fight, they can give you it if you're winning.
00:50:33The judges are gonna give it to him.
00:50:34To win by the judges, you see you can win the fight.
00:50:38But the judges, this is here.
00:50:39The judges are giving it to him.
00:50:40What happened?
00:50:41Why are you not throwing?
00:50:42Why are you not finishing, bastard?
00:50:44Throw your punches.
00:50:45Finish off.
00:50:50Close your eyes.
00:50:53Here we see Garcia landing the type of punch that he lands anytime he lets his hands go.
00:50:59Because Morales is just slowing down now, period.
00:51:02And he's really, and I'm looking at Garcia, he's very fresh in his mind.
00:51:06His punches, his body is real fresh.
00:51:08And if he lets more punches go, I think he could possibly even stop Morales.
00:51:13The pieces of paper that Jose Mastrito Morales was holding in his hand when he spoke to Eric
00:51:19Morales were the official score ballots which were brought to him after the eighth round.
00:51:24And he's telling his son that on those official scorecards, Danny Garcia leads them all.
00:51:29Harold, how do you have it coming to the tent?
00:51:31Okay, Jim, I've got an 86-85, five rounds to four, Danny Garcia.
00:51:35Jim, I thought at round 6, 7, 8, 9, Danny Garcia, end of the day, did more damage when won those four rounds.
00:51:42You know, Eric Morales, like you said, he's slowing down a bit.
00:51:45Danny still waits too long, but when he gets off of that left hook and that left jab,
00:51:48he just does more damage.
00:51:50It's hard, it's fast, you know, it seems to push back Morales, it seems to hurt Morales.
00:51:55So I've given Danny Garcia four rounds in a row.
00:51:58I've got him ahead five rounds to four.
00:52:01That's a good scorecard.
00:52:02Fair enough.
00:52:06And Jose Morales was clearly trying to inject energy into his son as he shouted at him,
00:52:13Berated him, urged, sort of horsewhipped him.
00:52:18If I understood him correctly, unless he's simply trying to motivate Eric,
00:52:22he said that the judges gave all the rounds except for one to Danny Garcia?
00:52:28Maybe I misheard him.
00:52:30Doesn't seem likely, but maybe Jose wanted to redouble the point.
00:52:34Maybe he just wanted to be as extreme as possible in dealing with Eric
00:52:37to try to get the point across that he believes his son needs a knockout.
00:52:42So Jose has been telling Eric for the last two rounds
00:52:45that he must knock Danny Garcia out.
00:52:49Super dai!
00:53:08I'll get everything.
00:53:13V...
00:53:16Oh, right hand shot by Morales.
00:53:27Yeah, he set that up, he got kept acting like he was gonna
00:53:29throw a right hand at the waist, and he looked down again,
00:53:32and next time he threw it right over top.
00:53:34Very smart.
00:53:35Well, he knows he needs something dramatic here to win.
00:53:39I mean, he's acquitting himself well, Morales.
00:53:41He shows he can still handle himself,
00:53:43but he didn't get the win against Maidana,
00:53:45and if this continues, he likely won't get the win here
00:53:48unless he can shake things up.
00:53:52Ten years ago in the featherweight class,
00:53:53that punch would have rocked the opponent.
00:53:58Now Morales is trying to scrape out wins,
00:54:01fighting above his normal weight at 140.
00:54:03Good body shot by Eric Morales.
00:54:05Good rally in this round.
00:54:07We'll talk about it in the next round, Emanuel.
00:54:17Hold it right there.
00:54:20Tune in April 14th for the premiere of 24-7 Mayweather Cotto,
00:54:27our award-winning documentary series.
00:54:29We'll be featuring behind-the-scenes looks at Floyd Mayweather
00:54:32and Miguel Cotto as they prepare for their big showdown May 5,
00:54:35only on HBO Pay-Per-View.
00:54:41He's yours. He's just there. He's ready for you.
00:54:43We are angles.
00:54:44Again, right through the middle.
00:54:46Give him water.
00:54:47Here we see what has made Morales such a great and popular fighter.
00:55:01Always trying, always wanting to get to last punch in an exchange.
00:55:05That was a crunching right hand.
00:55:08First lady in the Morales household there.
00:55:11Jessica Morales.
00:55:12Power punches through the 10th round.
00:55:15Morales only 61 out of 210.
00:55:17He's receded a little bit in that category.
00:55:20Danny Garcia, 130 out of 336.
00:55:22But on Harold Letterman's card,
00:55:24Morales evened the scorecard by winning that last round.
00:55:28Yeah, that's what I was gonna say before the bell rock.
00:55:30Even though you said that the official scorecard
00:55:33shows Garcia virtually winning every round.
00:55:36I just don't see that.
00:55:38I see it as a very close competitive fight.
00:55:40I agree.
00:55:41That if someone could win this last round
00:55:45and the next very convincingly,
00:55:46let's say Morales, that he would probably win a decision.
00:55:49So I disagree with the official scorecard
00:55:51that they show in the comments.
00:55:52If Morales wins dramatically in this last round
00:55:54and makes a great last stand here, win or lose,
00:55:57he remains viable.
00:55:58This is the 11th of a scheduled 12.
00:56:00So Morales has about five more minutes
00:56:03to try to get something done in the fight.
00:56:04And his father has urged him to seek a knockout.
00:56:07Otherwise, Danny Garcia is gonna pick up a title belt,
00:56:13which went vacant at the weigh-in yesterday
00:56:15when Eric Morales elected to weigh in at 142
00:56:18and not to bother to try to make the 140-pound weight.
00:56:21Blood coming from the mouth of Garcia now.
00:56:23Morales won't quit.
00:56:24Finding a hole with that right hand.
00:56:25Stop! Stop!
00:56:26Stand by. Stand by.
00:56:27I was about to mention how Garcia's nose
00:56:32has been swelling, and now Morales
00:56:34has basically popped it open.
00:56:36And Garcia keeps his head in one spot,
00:56:39but he's punching what you mentioned.
00:56:40Oh, down goes Eric Morales.
00:56:45Stunned.
00:56:46Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
00:56:51He was down five times against Matty Pacquiao.
00:56:55He's no stranger to the canvas.
00:56:56That was a sudden shot by Garcia.
00:57:00Stop! Stop!
00:57:01Stand by. Stop!
00:57:02Stop! Stop!
00:57:02Stop!
00:57:03Stop!
00:57:04When I say stop, you gotta stop, you gotta stop.
00:57:07I have some low penalty for hitting on the break,
00:57:09but Cole is not going to issue it.
00:57:10So Garcia is given the right to get away with that one.
00:57:15Actually helped Morales, bought him some time.
00:57:17Less than a minute to go in the 11th round.
00:57:27Now it's Garcia who's tracking a knockout
00:57:30after having knocked Morales down.
00:57:31Stop! No, go ahead.
00:57:32Stop, stop, stop.
00:57:32No, go ahead.
00:57:37Knowing what we know about the official scorecards,
00:57:39it's more imperative than ever now for Morales
00:57:41to seek the knockout his father's talking about.
00:57:43We're seeing some real grip from both guys.
00:57:46Morales gunning for the knockout
00:57:47to make something big happen.
00:57:49Garcia hurt.
00:57:50He's got a good kick.
00:57:52Bloodied nose, swollen face.
00:57:54He came up with the drama.
00:57:56And I want to see a replay of the knockdown,
00:57:58because I'll be honest, Morales' back obscured the punch
00:58:02for me, and I'm not sure how Garcia got it.
00:58:05Mainly because his legs are so old.
00:58:1035 years old.
00:58:12May not have trained as well as he should for the fight.
00:58:15Don't worry about your blood, there's nothing.
00:58:20It's the only blood, you cut.
00:58:22Beautiful man.
00:58:23You cut, you cut.
00:58:24Stay told, but you're winning.
00:58:25All righty.
00:58:30Open up your eyes, open up your eyes.
00:58:32A little water, drink.
00:58:33You okay? You okay?
00:58:35You want to keep going?
00:58:36You want to go?
00:58:37Come on, give it all.
00:58:38Keep your hands up, bastard.
00:58:39Keep your hands up.
00:58:40Here you see the knockdown right here.
00:58:43Left hook retained by a beautiful left hook,
00:58:46but I think a lot was because of the clean punches
00:58:49he didn't see and the fact that his legs
00:58:51is bad at this stage, too.
00:58:52I'll be honest.
00:58:53He's landed this left hook several times.
00:58:55But that was right on the chin.
00:58:57And that's the point.
00:58:58That's the sweet spot.
00:59:01They got it.
00:59:02So the knockdown makes it clearer than ever
00:59:04that Morales is ahead of the fight.
00:59:06We already have told you about the official scorecards
00:59:08as reported to Eric in his corner.
00:59:13Danny Garcia in control now.
00:59:18Could this be the last round of Eric Morales' career
00:59:22in his 60th pro fight?
00:59:25Is it finally time for a curtain call for Eric Morales?
00:59:30I don't know.
00:59:31I don't know.
00:59:31I don't know.
00:59:33I don't know.
00:59:34I don't know.
00:59:34I don't know.
00:59:35I don't know.
00:59:36I don't know.
00:59:40I don't know.
00:59:41Look.
00:59:42This is left hook for Garcia.
00:59:56Morales has shown that he can still fight and fight well.
00:59:58But can he fight well enough to win?
01:00:02He has a little over two minutes left.
01:00:04If he has anything left at all,
01:00:06he's trying to decoy Garcia a little bit here.
01:00:10Playing possum just a bit.
01:00:13Maybe trying to get the young man to come at him
01:00:15so that he can counter with something.
01:00:18For Morales to finish up on his feet
01:00:20would be a victory to me if that was him
01:00:22because his legs are gone,
01:00:24and there's no way he's gonna win a decision
01:00:26on knockout anyone tonight.
01:00:27And he's eating Danny Garcia's left hook
01:00:30at this point in the fight.
01:00:31And everything hurts him right now
01:00:33because he has no legs under.
01:00:44Mike!
01:00:47Well, if it is good night for him in this fight,
01:00:49Emmanuel, in terms of trying to win,
01:00:51he did not go gently into it.
01:00:54He gave it a real stand in the 10th and 11th.
01:00:57Oh, and another big right hand for Morales.
01:01:05Counter right lands inside for Garcia.
01:01:08Morales isn't gonna be able to get it done by laying back.
01:01:11He's gonna have to try to attack one more time
01:01:14if he's going to give it one last shot in the fight.
01:01:17And if you're sitting at home musing about the possibility
01:01:33of a 12th-round knockout,
01:01:34in 69 fights, or 59 fights, I should say,
01:01:39Eric Morales has never had one.
01:01:41He got one in the 11th to win his first belt
01:01:43against Zaragoza with a body shot.
01:01:44Sure did.
01:01:47Well, Eric Morales had just turned 21
01:01:51when we saw him in the Zaragoza fight in 1997.
01:01:54He won his first world championship that night,
01:01:56made his mark among Mexican fighters,
01:01:58and over the course of the intervening years,
01:02:00has had so many colorful wars on the rim,
01:02:03and so many amazingly entertaining fights.
01:02:06And such an outstanding competitive record
01:02:08before guys like Barrera and Pacquiao
01:02:10began to get the better of him,
01:02:13that he ranks among the top 10 greatest fighters
01:02:15in the history of Mexico.
01:02:17Danny Garcia has just won a world title in all likelihood
01:02:21and has his beginning as a possible American star.
01:02:25It was too much to ask of the old warrior tonight.
01:02:42Down the stretch, he faded, and down the stretch,
01:02:45Garcia came on.
01:02:47There's a look at Harold Letterman's scorecard,
01:02:49which shows you Danny Garcia winning six
01:02:51of the last seven rounds in the fight,
01:02:53and the 11th was a 10-8 round.
01:02:56So though Morales was ahead on Harold's scorecard
01:02:58much of the night, Danny Garcia winds up
01:03:00with a 115-112 margin.
01:03:02Now, Harold, tell us who the official judges are.
01:03:04Okay, Jim.
01:03:05Samuel Conde, he's been judging a long time,
01:03:07probably the veteran judge in Puerto Rico.
01:03:10I've disagreed with him numerous times over the years,
01:03:12but, you know, it is what it is, Jim.
01:03:16Mark Green, he's a good judge.
01:03:18Comes from England, he's 50 years old.
01:03:21We've seen him on HBO before.
01:03:22He worked Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against Peter Manfredo.
01:03:27Warren Schellenberger, the real veteran judge in Texas.
01:03:30That is the guy who's been judging 20 years, 72 years old.
01:03:33He very rarely blows a decision.
01:03:35Good judge.
01:03:39Does she want him to retire?
01:03:42We may find out after the fight.
01:03:43Let's go to Michael Buffer
01:03:44for the official particulars on the decision.
01:03:49Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the scorecards.
01:03:52Orange Schellenberger scores it 117-110.
01:03:56Mark Green, 116-112.
01:04:00Samuel Conde, 118-109.
01:04:04All three scorecards go to the winner by unanimous decision.
01:04:09And new WBC super lightweight champion of the world
01:04:15from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
01:04:18Danny Swift Garcia.
01:04:23So Garcia takes his record up to 23-0.
01:04:30And Eric Morales in his 60th fight has his eighth loss.
01:04:36Family celebration for the Garcias there in the center of the ring.
01:04:40Other Garcias live through Danny, not afflicted by asthma,
01:04:45as are most members of his family.
01:04:48He has the chance to excel in the ring.
01:04:50And his father, who wanted to be a fighter but couldn't,
01:04:54is living through his son.
01:04:56Eric Morales takes one last ride around the ring.
01:04:59Perhaps a suggestion that he has an exit on his mind.
01:05:06Final CompuBox numbers.
01:05:08And you'll see that the numbers mounted up for Garcia
01:05:11as the fight went on.
01:05:12He lands at 74 more punches.
01:05:14He throws 232 more punches,
01:05:16and he lands at a slightly higher connect percentage.
01:05:19Down the stretch, he landed by far the harder shots
01:05:22in the fight, landing at 99 more power punches,
01:05:25throwing 205 more power punches,
01:05:27landing at a significantly higher connect percentage.
01:05:30And as I mentioned in the last few rounds,
01:05:32he landed some cruel shots on the older fighter.
01:05:36And Punch Zone will show us where the punches landed.
01:05:39Down the stretch, Danny Garcia was landing
01:05:42his right hand over the top,
01:05:44and most particularly his left hook.
01:05:45You see 69 connects to the right side of Morales' head,
01:05:49and 26 on the chin.
01:05:51As opposed to the work that Morales was able to do on Garcia,
01:05:56and the numbers dwindled as the fight went on.
01:05:59Good body work.
01:06:00We told you before the fight that Danny Garcia
01:06:02was by nature a body puncher.
01:06:0455 times he landed with a right hand,
01:06:06and even though Eric Morales was determined
01:06:08to block his left hook, he got it in 34 times.
01:06:11And there is the victory shot for young Danny Garcia,
01:06:14exultant after finally hearing the score.
01:06:18And now a Titleist for the first time in his career,
01:06:21he stands by with Max Kellerman.
01:06:24Danny, you fought through a bloody face
01:06:27against a valiant old legend to get to this moment.
01:06:31What does it mean to you?
01:06:33I mean, first of all, I want to thank God.
01:06:36I want to thank my dad who been there with me since the beginning.
01:06:44It's been a long ride.
01:06:46I want to thank Al Heyman, Golden Boy Promotion,
01:06:48and my family back at home.
01:06:50Everybody in Philadelphia, we did it, baby.
01:06:53Danny, your dad says that he lives his dream through you.
01:06:57Tell us about that.
01:06:59I mean, it's been a long way.
01:07:03Everybody must be a champion, you know?
01:07:05And he stuck by my side, he told me to be a good kid.
01:07:09I listened to him, and we did it.
01:07:12What does it mean to you?
01:07:13It means the world right now.
01:07:15It means the world to me.
01:07:16I love Danny.
01:07:18That's the best thing God ever gave me.
01:07:21Danny, how did you do it?
01:07:23We talked about what it means.
01:07:24How did you do it fighting through that bloody face
01:07:27against the old man who was making that stand?
01:07:30I mean, God's power.
01:07:32Great condition.
01:07:32We had a 10-week camp.
01:07:34I knew it was going to be a bloody war,
01:07:36and I knew I just couldn't let him take my dreams away.
01:07:39Congratulations, Danny.
01:07:41I'm sure we'll see you again soon.
01:07:42I just want to thank my mom, my twin sister's back at home,
01:07:45Philadelphia, and I just want to tell everybody,
01:07:48if you got dreams, don't ever give up,
01:07:49because they come true.
01:07:51Congratulations, champ.
01:07:57Eric, congratulations on another excellent performance.
01:08:03You took a lap around the ring on your corner's shoulders.
01:08:07What did that mean?
01:08:10Well, look, first of all, I thank everyone for their support,
01:08:13their love.
01:08:14And, well, it was a difficult fight.
01:08:18It was a difficult fight.
01:08:21Debo aceptar que las condiciones del tipo de velocidad,
01:08:25del tipo de boxeo que usó, se me complicó.
01:08:28First of all, I want to thank the public.
01:08:29And yesterday was a very difficult fight,
01:08:32and his type of style gave me complications.
01:08:35It was difficult.
01:08:36You fought a great fight against Maidana,
01:08:39but you came up short.
01:08:42Here, you also fought a valiant fight,
01:08:44but again came up short.
01:08:47Are you going to continue to fight?
01:08:50I have to think a lot.
01:08:52I really have to think if it's worth it,
01:08:55if I really have the conditions necessary
01:08:57to continue to face a level boxing.
01:09:00If it's not, it's not the case, right?
01:09:02I think my health is in front of all.
01:09:05And, well, I do it for pleasure.
01:09:09So I have to think.
01:09:11I've got to think about it.
01:09:12I truly have to think about it.
01:09:14You know, to fight at this level against rivals
01:09:16like this opponent, high-conditioned, well-conditioned,
01:09:19I really have to think about it,
01:09:20because, first of all, it's my health.
01:09:21But I really have to think about it.
01:09:23If this is it, it's been a privilege to watch your career.
01:09:27Thanks, champ.
01:09:30Muchas gracias.
01:09:30Muchas gracias a todos.
01:09:32Jim.
01:09:34All right, thank you very much, Max Kellerman.
01:09:36So it was an evening that didn't begin all that auspiciously
01:09:39as our first fight yielded a highly unsatisfactory result.
01:09:43Carlos Molina being disqualified in the 10th round
01:09:46when his cornermen entered the ring,
01:09:49although the dequalification didn't take place
01:09:51for some reason at the moment when the cornermen entered
01:09:53the ring during a knockdown count.
01:09:55It was disturbing, to say the least, how that was conducted.
01:09:59But then in our main event, a stirring performance
01:10:03down the stretch by Danny Garcia.
01:10:04He emerges as a young American star.
01:10:07And Eric Morales may have paraded his theatrical heart, will,
01:10:11and skill for the last time in the sport.
01:10:14Thank you very much for being with us tonight
01:10:16on World Championship Boxing.
01:10:18One final reminder that our reality series 24-7,
01:10:21nominated for eight sports Emmys in 2011,
01:10:23returns April 14 with 24-7 Mayweather Cota.
01:10:26We follow both fighters during training and out of the ring
01:10:29as they prepare for their 154-pound showdown
01:10:32on HBO pay-per-view, May 5.
01:10:34Now for our entire HBO crew,
01:10:37Emmanuel Stewart and Max Kellerman in particular.
01:10:39I'm Jim Lampley saying so long from Houston, Texas.
01:10:59This has been a presentation of HBO Sports.
