00:00Hill circuit, home territory for the likes of John Cleland and David Leslie, but it's Frank Beeler, still the man to catch in the Audi, 55 points ahead of a la menu in the Renault.
00:11Rounds 17 and 18 coming up, and Knock Hill is the kind of circuit that can really spring a few surprises.
00:17Watching it all, Murray Walker.
00:19Glorious Scottish countryside, an action-packed, truly spectacular circuit, superb weather and an enthusiastic crowd.
00:31And there's something they haven't seen at Knock Hill, Frank Beeler's championship-leading four-wheel-drive Audi.
00:37I've got the power!
00:39Germany's Frank Beeler's the top man. He's got the power and the car.
00:43Five wins in his first eight BTCC races, but then the penalty, 30 kilograms of ballast to slow the Audi down.
00:52And since then it's been tough. Just watch.
00:55Four-wheel-drive still pays at the start, but then the extra weight tells.
01:00Podium places, but no wins for Audi from the last four meetings.
01:04But their rivals are still worried. Has Beeler been sandbagging when he could have won?
01:10You cannot slow yourself down for, I don't know, five or six events, so ten or twelve races.
01:19And as I said, the last eight or ten races now, I didn't have a win.
01:24And I promise you, I'm always trying as hard as we can or as hard as I can.
01:29And the others are at least as strong as we are, and sometimes they are stronger.
01:35Sure enough, at Knock Hill, Volvo's Ricard Rydell is right back on board.
01:40Second in the championship, he's in pole position.
01:43But with 15 points for a win and 12 for second place, can Rydell close that daunting gap to Beeler?
01:49I think 54 points now after qualifying, but in theory you can get 160 points for the last few events,
01:58and I think there's nothing decided yet.
02:01It soon will be, though.
02:02Beeler's on the front row with Rydell ahead of Revalia and Winklehock's BMWs.
02:07Binkley fifth in the second Audi with Lesley's Honda.
02:11Then, Thompson's Vauxhall, Burt's Volvo.
02:14Row five, reigning champion John Cleland and James Kaye.
02:17Men use Renault, Radisic is Ford, Harvey and Coy, Peugeot and Renault.
02:22Patrick Watts is Peugeot.
02:24Matthew Neill's privately owned Ford Mondeo.
02:31Rydell on the left, Beeler on the right, away they go, up to Duffer's dip.
02:37Down the straight, into the right-hander.
02:40Revalia on the left, Rydell in the middle, Beeler on the right.
02:44Rydell goes into the lead, Beeler is second, Revalia tucks in in third position.
02:50Winklehock is fourth behind him, out of Duffer's dip.
02:53Peter McIntyre's the right-hander, down up to the chicane.
02:57Left, right at 75 miles an hour.
02:59All of them through, nose to tail.
03:01On the clubs, at 110 miles an hour, slow down to 75, speed up to 130, the Volvo leads.
03:11The Audi is in second place, in third place it's the BMW and the leader is Ricard Rydell.
03:18And Bidcliffe is going past Winklehock, he's done it.
03:23Bidcliffe up to fourth, we're with Radicic now.
03:26On the left is Cleland.
03:28In the middle is Kelvin Bird's Volvo.
03:30And Cleland goes onto the grass, but goes ahead of the Volvo.
03:33Menuh is challenging on the right.
03:35One lap completed, Rydell leads.
03:37Beeler second, Revalia third.
03:39And Bidcliffe goes inside Winklehock.
03:41And Leslie, we're with Winklehock now in front of us.
03:44It's big, small-wheel drive Audi.
03:51And bang!
03:52Patrick Watts hits Will Hoy's Renault.
03:56He's dropping back a bit.
03:57Hoy goes through.
03:58There's Tim Harving going past as well.
04:00So Watts has lost two places.
04:02He's lost three places because there's Gary Ailes.
04:05This is our Primera.
04:06The blue and white car ahead of us.
04:08Now, Watts is chasing the Primera.
04:11Goes inside it.
04:15Turns in and clanks and he's lost it.
04:17Tarsmoke.
04:19Boy, he's really lost it.
04:21Patrick Watts goes right, goes left.
04:23He's off the track.
04:24He's trying to rejoin.
04:27It doesn't sound to me as though he's going to do so.
04:31Into the tyre wall.
04:33Now he's got to back up.
04:34Oh, a souvenir.
04:35I'll have that.
04:37Down the top straight.
04:38Rydell leads me in a second.
04:40Revali a third.
04:41There he's been flipped.
04:42Right behind him is Winklehock.
04:45The silver Audi.
04:46The white BMW.
04:48Leslie is in sixth position in the Honda Accord.
04:51There he is.
04:52Going down the hill.
04:53Now climbing.
04:54And Patrick Watts is trying to rejoin.
04:56Oh, look at the driver's door.
04:58Pushed right in.
04:59Tremendous thump there.
05:00And Gary Ailes is out of the race.
05:03Smoke pouring out of the Primera.
05:05Flinging away.
05:07Patrick Watts.
05:09And the leaders are catching him.
05:10Patrick Watts in the Peugeot.
05:12He's being lapped and he goes off.
05:14Major problem for Patrick.
05:16In fact, he's out of the race, it seems to me.
05:20Yeah.
05:21Out goes the Peugeot 406.
05:23Out goes Patrick Watts.
05:25Not the happiest of men from the look of him.
05:27Oh, no.
05:29And we're with Radisic.
05:31He's challenging first in the Volvo on the left.
05:34Oh, the trim's come off his bumper.
05:37Peeled off by the front of Radisic's Ford Mondeo.
05:41It's Christmas Day for that marshal.
05:44And Ricard Rydell in the front-wheel drive Volvo
05:47stays ahead of the four-wheel drive Audi.
05:50We're with Cleland.
05:51He's in eighth position going through the chicane
05:54and going off at the chicane.
05:55This is last year's champion,
05:57John Cleland in the Vauxhall Vectra,
05:59raising the dust quite literally,
06:02rejoining the track.
06:04But look, his left rear wheel is locked up solid.
06:08Don't know what's happened.
06:10It looks to me as though his suspension may have broken.
06:14Anyway, the left...
06:15And he's grinding the...
06:16He's grinding the tyre.
06:18It's a major, major problem
06:20because now John Tellen has got to limp back on D to the pits,
06:24get his wheel changed,
06:25hopefully get back into the race.
06:27And in the race,
06:28Rydell and Biela are pulling away a bit
06:31from the battle for third.
06:32It's Romagna,
06:33Big Cliff,
06:34Winklehock,
06:35Leslie in that order,
06:37through Duffus.
06:40Now we're with last year's champion of Germany.
06:44So Winklehock,
06:44ex-champion in the British Touring Car Championship,
06:48chasing Big Cliff's Audi.
06:49Through the chicane,
06:50that's Revalia,
06:52his teammate,
06:52ahead of Big Cliff.
06:53Here's the lead-up.
06:55Rydell,
06:56Biela.
06:58Behind them,
06:59Revalia,
07:00Big Cliff,
07:00Winklehock,
07:01Leslie.
07:02Doing 130 miles an hour here.
07:08Turn in.
07:12Join Joe Winklehock.
07:14Now,
07:15watch the lights.
07:17He changes up when they all come on
07:19and the revs are at the maximum.
07:20130 miles an hour here,
07:22down into the right-hander
07:23at Duffus.
07:24This is it.
07:27Ah,
07:27we have BMW.
07:28Big Cliff,
07:29Audi,
07:29number 22,
07:30Winklehock.
07:32In the BMW,
07:33sandwiching that silver Audi
07:35in front of them.
07:36Bruma Guitars,
07:38up to the chicane again,
07:39that's third gear,
07:4075 miles an hour.
07:42Here it is.
07:45Still close,
07:46anybody's right,
07:46and John Cleland is in.
07:51Changing the wheel,
07:52can they get him out again?
07:53What's the problem anyway?
07:55Well,
07:56just by virtue of the first lap
07:58and a couple of slow corners,
08:00the front's
08:01taken some fairly heavy hits
08:03because
08:03everything's sort of
08:05bunched up front
08:05and I ran into the back of Kelvin.
08:08but going up through the chicane
08:11on that particular lap,
08:13as it landed,
08:14it sort of got a bit loose anyway
08:15and as it landed,
08:17it just flipped round
08:18and we have a puncture on the back.
08:20So whether the puncture was there first
08:21or whether it was there afterwards
08:22is hard to say,
08:23but it didn't land properly.
08:24one of those things.
08:29Very bad luck, John.
08:29Yeah, we're not having a good day,
08:30are we?
08:30You're not, John,
08:32but Ricard Rydell is.
08:34He's staying ahead
08:35of the championship leader,
08:37Frank Bieler.
08:39And he's driving
08:39a beautiful,
08:40smooth race.
08:41Provided he stays where he is,
08:43gets to the apex right
08:44on all the corners,
08:46stays in the middle
08:48of the track
08:48if he has to,
08:49it's going to be
08:50very, very difficult
08:51for Bieler to get past him.
08:52It's going to be
08:53very difficult for Rivaldi
08:54to get past Bieler
08:55and we're looking back now
08:57at Big Cliff's Audi
08:58from Rivaldi as BMW
09:00doing 130 miles an hour
09:02up to the hairpin.
09:03Just listen.
09:06Turn in.
09:08There's the leader.
09:09Volvo, Audi.
09:10Getting very, very close
09:11is Frank Bieler.
09:13He's really harassing
09:14Ricard Rydell.
09:16Through to end another lap.
09:21Volvo, Audi, BMW, Audi.
09:24Duffus.
09:27Ricard Rydell
09:28from Sweden.
09:30Bieler from Germany.
09:32Revalia from Italy.
09:34And Englishman
09:35John Bidcliffe.
09:36Number 44.
09:40Through the chicane again.
09:43And here are
09:44Tim Harvey
09:44and Will Hoy
09:46behind him.
09:46Number 23
09:47is the top privateer
09:49Richard Cain.
09:50We're with him now.
09:5114th place.
09:52Hoy ahead
09:53in the Renault.
09:54He's well down.
09:55Will Hoy
09:56and his team mate
09:57Alan Menuh.
09:57We expect there
09:58to be much higher
09:59in the Williams Renaults.
10:00And Tim Harvey
10:01number 5
10:02is staying ahead
10:03of Will Hoy.
10:05And there's Harvey
10:06ahead of us.
10:07We're with Will Hoy now.
10:09And he's challenging.
10:10He's pushing very hard.
10:11He's going for that
10:1212th position.
10:16Virgil's staying ahead
10:17on acceleration
10:18and power
10:19as they come up
10:19to the hairpin.
10:20But Hoy closes.
10:22He's diving through
10:22on the inside.
10:24Does he hit?
10:25Does he hit Harvey?
10:26Well, he just touches
10:27him at the back.
10:28And Richard Cain
10:29is driving
10:30a terrific race
10:31in the privately owned
10:33Vauxhall Cavalier.
10:34He's up against
10:34two 1996 works cars
10:37and he's staying
10:38with them.
10:38And Will Hoy
10:39is challenging Harvey
10:40as they come into
10:41the right-hander
10:41and Duffus
10:42and he goes ahead.
10:43Harvey goes up
10:44onto the curb
10:44and Will Hoy
10:46has gained a place.
10:48There's the proof
10:49by Harvey Cain.
10:54Here are the leaders
10:55and from the body language
10:57Frank Bieler
10:58is pushing for the lead.
10:59He's positioning himself
11:00as he comes up
11:01to the hairpin
11:02behind Rydell's Volvo.
11:04Look,
11:04he's inside it
11:05as they come into
11:06the top straight
11:07and if he can stay there
11:09he'll be in the right
11:10position when they get
11:11to the right-hander
11:11at Duffus
11:12to take the lead
11:12and he is staying there.
11:15Bieler's got the right line
11:16and the Audi
11:18goes through
11:19into the lead
11:20down to second place
11:21with Rydell.
11:22We're with him now
11:23looking ahead
11:24at the Audi
11:24and I think
11:25that Frank Bieler
11:26is going to stride away now.
11:29Beautiful passing move
11:31by the Germans.
11:32Through the chicane
11:33but it's not just Bieler
11:35that's flying
11:36both the Audis
11:37are flying.
11:38Look,
11:39John Fincliffe
11:40has caught
11:41Revalia's BMW.
11:43So,
11:43there is Bieler
11:44the leader.
11:45There is Rydell
11:46and right behind them
11:47that's Revalia
11:49number 21
11:49third position.
11:51We're with Bidcliffe now
11:52coming up to the hairpin
11:54he's going to do
11:55the same thing
11:56to Revalia
11:57through on the inside
11:58now he's got
11:59the inside line
12:00he's going to go up
12:01into third position
12:03and then he's going
12:03to challenge
12:04Richard Rydell
12:05I wouldn't be
12:05at all surprised.
12:07In car with
12:07John Bidcliffe
12:08that's Revalia
12:09on the left
12:09but we've got
12:10the inside line
12:11let's see
12:12yes late braking
12:14very late braking
12:15and John Bidcliffe
12:16number 44
12:17moves up into
12:18third place
12:19ahead of the
12:20multiple champion
12:21Roberto Revalia
12:23excellent bit of driving
12:25so through the chicane
12:29again
12:30with Winklehock
12:31now
12:31fifth position
12:32his teammate
12:33Revalia
12:34ahead of him
12:34now
12:34rather than
12:35John Bidcliffe
12:36is Joe Winklehock
12:39going to challenge
12:40Revalia
12:40for that fourth position
12:42Bidcliffe
12:44is easing away
12:45now
12:45from the two BMWs
12:47and he's closing
12:47on
12:48Rydell
12:50in front of him
12:51John Bidcliffe
12:52number 44
12:52with his team
12:54mate
12:54Frank Bieler
12:55leading the races
12:56closing up
12:57on the Volvo

13:04it's brew up
13:05time
13:06at Nissan
13:06that's Ailes'
13:07car
13:08and with a bit
13:09of luck
13:09I'll get the whole
13:10car this time
13:11fight the power
13:15there go the leaders
13:16keep the extinguisher going
13:23that really is
13:24looking very nasty
13:25to me
13:25that Nissan
13:26could burst into flames
13:27but here's a big battle
13:29for 12
13:29Hoy
13:30leading Harvey
13:31behind him
13:32is Richard Kay
13:33behind him
13:34is Lee Brooks
13:35in the Toyota
13:35the red and white car
13:37in car
13:38with Richard Kay
13:39challenging
13:40Tim Harvey's
13:42works
13:42Peugeot
13:43Harvey pulls over
13:44and lets him through
13:45he's obviously got a problem
13:47Richard Kay goes through
13:48but never mind
13:49he's gained a place
13:50in the green
13:51and white voxel
13:52and Harvey is going
13:54slower and slower
13:55the fire looks as though
13:57it's out
13:58and Matthew Neill
13:59is passing
14:00Tim Harvey
14:01oh and off goes Thompson
14:03that's James Thompson
14:04in the work spectra
14:05he's passed
14:07by Kelvin Burt
14:08now Thompson
14:09had a big crash
14:10here last year
14:11happily
14:12he can't even
14:12remember it
14:13and catching him fast
14:15is Paul Radisic
14:16we're in the Ford Mondeo
14:18now
14:19and he's obviously
14:20going to catch Thompson
14:21and pass him
14:22probably at Clark's corner
14:23there's Thompson
14:25number 7
14:26in the Vauxhall Vectra
14:27replacing last year's
14:29Vauxhall Cavalier
14:30on go the brake lights
14:31as he goes
14:32through the chicane
14:33and right behind him

14:36we're in the Ford Mondeo
14:37passed up
14:38into 9th position

14:41won't please Paul Radisic
14:43very much
14:43he's won the World Cup
14:45twice for Ford
14:46sadly though
14:47this year's Mondeo
14:48isn't going as well
14:50as last year's car
14:51but they're working
14:51hard on it
14:52trying to get it right
14:54and it looks as though
14:55they're starting to succeed
14:56so there is James Kaye
14:58he's going to pass
14:59Thompson soon
15:00because Thompson
15:00is very obviously
15:02coming in to retire
15:03past him
15:04goes the Honda Accord
15:05and sure enough
15:07Thompson's brake lines
15:08go on
15:09he turns into the pit lane
15:10he is out of the race
15:12bad race for Vauxhall
15:13Vila is out on his own
15:15in the front
15:16and here is the battle

15:22together
15:23anybody's second place
15:24we're with Midcliffe now
15:26third position
15:27he's catching
15:28Richard Rydell's Volvo
15:29ahead of him
15:30no doubt about that
15:31he's going for second place
15:33yes
15:34right up alongside the Volvo
15:36is there going to be contact
15:38they're into the top straight now
15:40and thanks to the better turn in
15:42of the Audi
15:43Midcliffe is in exactly the right place
15:46he's on the inside
15:48for the right hander coming up
15:50Rydell can't turn in front of him
15:53Midcliffe goes through
15:54up into second position
15:56so now it is Audi first
15:58Audi second
15:59it's happened once before this season
16:01and that was at Cruxton
16:03we're in Rydell's car now
16:05watching Midcliffe pull away
16:07through the chicane
16:08Midcliffe
16:09Rydell
16:10behind Rydell
16:12Revalia
16:12behind Revalia

16:17BMW
16:18this is the closing stages
16:21of the race
16:22and you can see
16:24the body trim
16:25on Rydell's Volvo
16:26is hanging loose
16:27at the back
16:27turn in
16:29Rydell has obviously
16:30got a problem
16:31I would think a grip problem
16:33because Revalia goes through
16:35now on the inside
16:36up into third position
16:37it might be tires for Rydell
16:40it might be gearbox
16:40but I suspect it's tires
16:42and we're looking back
16:44at him now
16:45and Wickhawk is challenging
16:46Wickhawk on the left
16:48fourth
16:48up on the curb
16:49nearly over
16:50but
16:51onto two wheels
16:52and that gives
16:53Richard Rydell
16:54the opportunity
16:54to hold his place
16:55and he does so
16:57Rydell fourth
16:58Wickhawk fifth
16:59and it looks as though
17:01they're going to finish
17:02in those places
17:03Volvo out
17:05it's Kelvin Burt
17:06Kelvin Burt
17:08who had a colossal crash
17:09at Alton Park
17:10he's back racing again
17:13but not in this one
17:14and it's the last lap
17:16Frank Bieler
17:17has caught Steve Robertson
17:19Sport Mondeo
17:21he's going to lap
17:21the Englishman
17:22he's going to take
17:23his sixth win
17:24and his first win
17:26with the weight penalty
17:27terrific drive
17:29by Frank
17:30board his way up
17:31got past
17:32Richard Rydell
17:33takes the checkered flag
17:35and wins
17:36at Nock Hill
17:38Bindcliffe second
17:41Revalia third
17:43and it's a great race
17:45for Audi
17:45with a maximum
17:4627 points
17:47Bieler's win
17:57gives him another
17:5815 points
17:59and with Rydell
18:00second in the championship
18:01finishing behind him
18:02Bieler's lead
18:03is stretched still further
18:04it's looking good
18:05for Frank
18:06out of the car
18:12a good race
18:13well driven
18:14congratulations all round
18:15and very well done
18:17John Biccliffe too
18:18who equals
18:19his best yet
18:20second place
18:21at Froxton
18:22in his first season
18:23in the Autotrader
18:24British Touring Car Championship
18:26let's say Rydell
18:28had a very good start
18:29for a front wheel drive
18:30it was unbelievable good
18:31and so I had to go
18:33behind him
18:35for a few laps
18:35and it was really difficult
18:36to overtake him
18:37but I think
18:38when I overtook him
18:40he did a mistake
18:41he missed a gear
18:41or something
18:42and so I was lucky
18:44to overtake
18:44and then it was not
18:45that difficult
18:46so now for race 2
18:5235 laps
18:53at the same front row
18:54of the grid
18:55as for race 1
18:56Rydell in pole position

19:20Harvey's Peugeot
19:21Robinson's Ford
19:22Kay's Cavalier
19:24Ails' Nissan
19:25and there's a sight
19:26we've seen before
19:27Rydell and Bieler
19:28and it's a great start
19:30by Richard Rydell
19:32gets the power down
19:33in the Volvo
19:33oh
19:35who's left

20:12coming up
20:13to the hairpin
20:13and Lesley
20:14having a look
20:14at Biccliffe
20:15who stoutly
20:16defends his position
20:17turns in

21:34he's staying ahead
21:36of the Audi
21:37up to the hairpin
21:38and this is where
21:40Bieler can get past
21:41but not this time
21:44because that set up
21:46is really working
21:47on the Volvo
21:47through to complete
21:49another lap
21:49in car with Richard Kay

23:03Rydell still leads
23:05in the Volvo
23:05he did in the first race
23:07but Bieler got past him

24:31Ravalli is still third
24:34he's come all the way
24:35from Italy for this race
24:36and it's been worth it

25:31he's failing
25:32here's a replay
25:34we're with Winklehock

25:48that is Bintcliffe
25:50we're looking back from Revalia again

26:49the Honda Accord
26:51is a much much better car
26:52this year
26:53they've really worked on it
26:54but having said that
26:55Lesley's got a problem
26:56he waits for John Cleland
26:58to go past
26:59there he is
27:00Cleland in the yellow

27:09and he is now in sixth place
27:11and that is Kay
27:12Kay
27:13Richard Kay spinning off
27:15I think his suspension has collapsed
27:17the left rear wheel
27:19tipped right over
27:20now he's going to try and rejoin
27:23because he's ahead of his total cup rival
27:26Lee Brooks
27:27and if he can close the gap
27:29he's in for a terrific prize

27:41Vila
27:41Revalia
27:42Midcliffe
27:42any one of them
27:44could win

28:33Vila
28:33Rivalia
28:34Midcliffe
28:35Kay keeps going
28:37or does he?
28:40you can see the broken rear suspension
28:42in car with Richard Kay
28:45he can still finish second
28:49if he just rejoins the track
28:51is that rear wheel
28:52going to get away?
28:54yes
28:54he's okay
28:55the front wheel's grip
28:57he drives away
28:58past him goes Winklehock
28:59he's lapped him of course
29:01and Richard Kay
29:02really does look as though
29:04he's going to finish
29:04and this is the last corner
29:09Vila has a last frantic effort
29:11to get first place away
29:12from Richard Rydell
29:13but he's not going to do it
29:15Rydell wins in the Volvo
