00:00We found all the differences between the Whole Foods Hot Bar in the US and the UK.
00:04This is Food Wars.
00:05It wouldn't really make sense to compare portion sizes for this episode because it's self-service,
00:09so you can kind of choose however much you want.
00:10What we'll do instead is compare some options you'll find in both the US and the UK.
00:14There's actually not that much overlap when it comes to the hot bar offerings in both
00:17countries, but we're going to start with the mac and cheese.
00:20I've got to say, it looks really good.
00:22I'm impressed.
00:25This might be the best thing I've had today, so far.
00:28Yeah, the texture is spot on.
00:29The sauce is silky, glossy, creamy, genuinely blown away by the Whole Foods mac and cheese.
00:35That's incredible.
00:36Here's what our mac and cheese looks like here in the US.
00:40Everyone raves about this mac and cheese.
00:42People here really like it.
00:43I'm going to take a piece of the crispy top.
00:49The flavor is pretty good.
00:50Add a little hot sauce or something just to add a little kick, but it's not bad.
00:55Next up, we have the pepperoni pizza.
00:58We are going to weigh the slice to see how much bigger or smaller it is than the UK's.
01:03Our pepperoni pizza slice comes out to 214 grams.
01:07That's a pretty hefty slice.
01:09I'd put that around like 288 grams.
01:11And while we're here, let's just count how many pieces of pepperoni we get.
01:15We have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
01:22I would add two more whole pepperonis based on the halves I see.
01:26So that comes out to about 14 pepperonis.
01:28Here we also have the mushroom and caramelized onion pizza.
01:34I love mushrooms.
01:35Love caramelized onion.
01:36We also have a caramelized onion and mushroom slice.
01:39I would say that Whole Foods Hot Bar is known for all of its side options.
01:43Here we have the potato salad, coleslaw, and broccoli.
01:47I am not the biggest fan of potato salad, but let's take a little bite.
01:53I actually like the potato salad way more than I like the macaroni salad.
01:57That's good.
01:58Here we have the UK versions of the potato salad, the coleslaw, and of course, the broccoli.
02:02I'm not actually sure in the UK how common potato salad is.
02:05It might just be one of those things that I'm blind to because I haven't grown up eating a lot of it.
02:09But I feel like it's not like a staple in the UK, maybe, in the same way that it is in the US.
02:17Yeah, the mouthful is where you get more of the like the bits are good.
02:20I think it's some red onion and also some celery, both of which give it a bit of a kick,
02:25which I think you need because otherwise it's just potatoes and mayonnaise, which,
02:28well, you know, delicious in their own way.
02:30Not the most balanced, flavorful meal.
02:32What is there to say about coleslaw?
02:36It's fine.
02:36They've made almost no effort to take that like above and beyond.
02:41This is what the UK broccoli looks like.
02:46It's steamed broccoli.
02:48Here is everything from a Whole Foods hot bar in the UK that you won't find in the US.
02:51Here's everything you'll find at the US Whole Foods hot bar that you won't be able to find in the UK.
02:56Let's start with what I guess would be the main course items, the real main events.
03:00We're starting with a banger.
03:01At a UK Whole Foods hot bar, you will find cottage pie.
03:03Now, for those who aren't familiar with cottage pie, it's a British delicacy.
03:06One of the staples of British cuisine.
03:08Basically, you take a mixture of beef mince, vegetables, which in this case
03:13seems to include peas, carrots, probably some onion in there as well.
03:16And you cook it all down and then you top it with mashed potato and cheese
03:20before baking it all into one delicious mass.

03:25Yeah, I'm kind of impressed, you know.
03:27Next up here, we have the jalapeno chimichurri beef bavette.
03:31Bavette for the American audience is I think what we call flank steak.
03:34I love chimichurri and steak, such a good combination.
03:37The people of Argentina really popped off with that one.
03:41It's fine.
03:42That's definitely overcooked and a bit chewy.
03:44Flank steak or bavette steak is a much sort of like thinner and traditionally cheaper cut
03:49because it is a bit tough.
03:50You have to treat it well.
03:52And I'm not sure they've done the best job of it here.
03:55Next up, we have cod bites.
03:57These are pretty straightforward pieces of cod, which are breaded and fried.
04:01Cod is probably the most popular fish in the UK, I would say,
04:04especially when it comes to white fish.
04:06It's kind of the default or the gold standard.
04:09I quite like that.
04:10It's like a slightly more grown up fish finger.
04:12Next up, we have some pesto chicken.
04:14Doesn't look super appetizing.
04:16In addition to the pesto, there's also some veggies in there as well.
04:19Got some courgette or zucchini.
04:22It's actually pretty good.
04:23I like the flavor.
04:24It's like creamy, but quite fresh as well.
04:26Next up is beef lasagna.
04:28I love lasagna.
04:30If they've done a really bad job, then it will make me sad.
04:35Yeah, I don't love that.
04:36They've gone way too heavy on the tomato,
04:39which might sound like a weird thing to say about lasagna,
04:40but my favorite lasagnas are the more meaty, I suppose.
04:43Here we have an orzo pasta with asparagus.
04:48I actually get a lot more pea than asparagus in this one.
04:51Still tasty.
04:52Just like slightly false advertising.
04:55I was expecting a stronger asparagus flavor.
04:57Here we have some barbecue pork.
04:59I'm kind of intrigued by this one.
05:02It's barbecue pork in, I would say, more of the sort of Chinese barbecue sense.
05:07You get some chili in there, five spice.
05:08And it's good.
05:09It's good.
05:10Because we got to the Whole Foods nice and early today,
05:11they actually still had their hot breakfast menu.
05:14Just to point out, this didn't come in a pre-assembled box.
05:16I did have to make my own box.
05:17And if you want just the individual items, you can also get them.
05:20But if you kind of get all of them, it forms what I would say is like a broad approximation of a full
05:24English breakfast.
05:25We have our egg-based dish here, which is like an omelet with some herbs in there as well.
05:29We have what are effectively like fancy baked beans.
05:32You got some grilled or maybe roasted mushrooms, some tomatoes with some spinach,
05:38and these adorable teeny little sausages.
05:45It might not be the most traditional full English I've ever had, but it's pretty tasty.
05:48Whole Foods in the UK also has chicken wings.
05:51They also come in a few different flavors.
05:52You can either just get plain, you can get piri-piri, which we love in the UK.
05:56You can get barbecue wings or buffalo wings.
06:01It's a pretty good wing, like the flavor is good.
06:03A bit too gentle, maybe?
06:04If that's supposed to be piri-piri, they've got to up their game.
06:07For our hot foods here in the US, we've got Cajun blackened fish and chimichurri chicken legs,
06:14zucchini vindaloo, potato samosas, chicken tikka masala.
06:18I feel like Harry would want me to try this chicken tikka masala, but it looks so pink
06:24that I fear for my life and will not be taking a bite.
06:27Let's see if the samosa is any good.
06:31I desperately need some dipping sauce, but it tastes pretty good.
06:35Out of all the cuisines Whole Foods offer, I do see a lot of Indian dishes specifically,
06:40probably because they try to cater to vegan and vegetarian people.
06:45Chana masala.
06:49That's not bad.
06:50This is pretty tasty.
06:52Mashed potatoes, barbecue meatloaf.
06:54Let's take a bite of the mashed potatoes.
06:56They look pretty underwhelming.
06:58Like there's not a seasoning in sight.
07:00I think they might just be potatoes.
07:06They're very buttery and well salted, so that's kind of nice,
07:10but I do wish that there was like a little something extra in them.
07:13Next, let's take a bite of this barbecue meatloaf.
07:17This is like very school lunchy to me.
07:20That it doesn't look good, but I promise you it smells really good.
07:26I know it looks horrid, okay?
07:28I know, but it tastes amazing actually.
07:30I really, really like this.
07:32It's like sweet and like caramelized from all the barbecue sauce
07:35and really flavorful on the inside.
07:37I think it's got like onions or something.
07:40Some sort of mystery vegetables in this.
07:43But it tastes really good.
07:45And we've got chicken strips.
07:47These are huge.
07:48I feel like they're too big to be called chicken strips.
07:51Oh, this chicken's cooked.
07:53We're good.
07:53I'm gonna eat it.
07:56That was just okay.
07:58Those taste like frozen chicken tenders.
08:00Here are some of the sides we found at our UK hot bar.
08:02One thing that seems to be exclusive to the UK is chips.
08:05These are, I guess, a thicker cut than maybe like a french fry would be.
08:10Pretty good. Fun.
08:11Fun.
08:11The next side we have are spinach and mint peas.
08:16If you like peas, if you like spinach, you will not be disappointed.
08:20That's really tasty.
08:21Next up we have rosemary potatoes.
08:26Just a little bit too dense for me in the middle.
08:29They're pretty good.
08:30Not incredible.
08:31Pretty good.
08:32Then a slightly unusual one that we found today.
08:34Here is some succotash.
08:36It's effectively just corn and butter beans,
08:40or I think as Americans call them lima beans,
08:42which are cooked down with some herbs and spices.
08:45There's some peppers in there, some chilies.
08:49It's very sweet.
08:50A lot of sweetness from the corn.
08:52Pretty good.
08:53And in the US we have herb roasted potatoes,
08:56chipotle lime sweet potatoes, carrots with spring herbs,
09:00sesame steamed vegetables.
09:02The sesame steamed vegetables smell really good, so let's take a bite.
09:07Yeah, these are so good.
09:08Mostly just because they taste like sesame.
09:11And we have white rice, brown rice, and lemon rice.
09:16Another part of the Whole Foods Hot Bar experience is the pizza.
09:18We have a few exclusive slices in the UK.
09:21Firstly, we have a margarita.
09:23You guys call this a cheese pizza, but they are the same thing.
09:25We have two chicken pizza options.
09:27Firstly, we have this buffalo chicken pizza.
09:29Although I'm a little bit concerned because it looks like it's covered in mold.
09:33I guess maybe this is like a blue cheese dressing, which is effectively just mold,
09:37and they've kind of spattered it.
09:39And the way it's spattered makes it look like mold growth.
09:42Not the most appetizing thing though.
09:43I feel like I have to try a bit for science to confirm if it is in fact blue cheese.
09:50I am relieved to announce that it is blue cheese.
09:54We also have another chicken option, which is barbecue chicken.
09:59It's fine. It's okay.
10:00Our final exclusive slice that we got today was ham, asparagus, and ricotta.
10:07I'm now realizing that's not ricotta.
10:08That is very much goat's cheese.
10:10I would describe that as like an ambitious pizza.
10:12If you like your pizzas a little out there, give that one a try.
10:16I think personally, I would stick to the classics.
10:18Here are all the pizza options you'll find at the US Hot Bar.
10:22We've got cheese, which I think the UK does have.
10:26Margarita.
10:28I actually do like how this cheese looks.
10:32It's not the best piece of pizza I've ever had, but coming from a grocery store,
10:37where you can buy just by the slice like this, it's pretty good.
10:40Next, we have garlic ricotta.
10:43Grilled vegetables.
10:44This looks like when all of your vegetables are going bad and you're like,
10:48let me figure out something to make with all these.
10:51Barbecue chicken?
10:53Question mark.
10:58I feel like there's maybe a faint sweetness that's coming from the barbecue sauce.
11:03I think they might have put it as the base sauce, but there's not enough for them to call this a
11:08barbecue slice in my opinion.
11:09I feel like I barely get any barbecue.
11:11And then we have the supreme pizza.
11:14I think I would still rather get food from the actual hot bar,
11:18like those entrees, instead of pizza.
11:22This is not it.
11:23Whole Foods in the UK has an extensive salad bar.
11:26Interestingly, over here, it's a separate thing to the hot bar.
11:29So if you get a salad box, it's one of these folded cardboard boxes.
11:33Whereas if you get a hot bar, it's served in one of these cardboard boxes with a plastic lid.
11:37There is a price difference between the two,
11:39which means that you're not really supposed to mix and match between them.
11:42So for example, if I got a salad box,
11:43I wouldn't really be allowed to walk over to the hot bar and put a scoop of mac and cheese in there.
11:47At the salad bar, you can either piece your own salad together from individual ingredients,
11:51or there are a few preset salad options.
11:53They've slightly merged into one, but the ones that we have today include
11:56this roasted Mediterranean vegetable salad,
11:59this sesame chili salad,
12:02and then honestly, not sure which one's which,
12:03but I think we have a kale and quinoa salad,
12:06and also a harissa salad couscous.
12:08Aside from the customizable salad bar,
12:11we've also got a ton of pre-made salad options.
12:14Let's start with our more vegetable heavy options,
12:17a more traditional salad.
12:19First up, we have Caesar salad.
12:21I'm a big Caesar salad girl, so I do want to try this Caesar,
12:26even though it looks underwhelming.
12:31It's not bad, but it does feel like the dressing does come from a bottle,
12:36and I really hate bottled Caesar dressing.
12:39I like it when it's like freshly made, so this is just okay to me.
12:44Next, we have artichoke salad.
12:47I've never had artichoke before ever, so I am interested to try it.
12:51Mm-mm.
12:57No, I don't like it.
12:58This looks awful to me.
13:01It just looks like a plate of stuff.
13:02Next, we have cabbage crunch and Asian slaw.
13:06We have the kale Caesar, which has boiled eggs in it.
13:11They're making some weird choices down in the Whole Foods Hot Bar.
13:15We have the field greens and goat cheese,
13:18and the summer corn and tomato.
13:20And we've got some green-slash-pasta salads, too.
13:23First up, we have the classic macaroni salad.
13:27It's like very, very saucy.
13:31It's not very good.
13:33There's something about the Whole Foods Hot Bar
13:36where they'll take foods that I've eaten like my whole life
13:40and make them just like a little weird.
13:43Like, this doesn't taste like a normal macaroni salad.
13:46It tastes like an idea of macaroni salad,
13:50but it's not right.
13:51Like, it's just a little off.
13:53Next, we have smoked mozzarella pasta salad,
13:56spinach feta orzo, miso adzuki farro,
14:00ranchero wheat berry salad,
14:02lemon cucumber-herbed couscous salad,
14:05bistro pasta salad,
14:07strawberry spinach and feta salad,
14:09grilled barbecue tofu with mango salad.
14:12Let's take a bite of this tofu.
14:15You can see the literal grill marks on it.
14:21I don't like that.
14:22For me personally, tofu has to be very seasoned for me to enjoy it.
14:29This just feels like they grilled the tofu and threw it into whatever the dressing is.
14:34So, it's not doing enough for me to mask that tofu-y taste.
14:38So, don't love that.
14:40Also, don't love the dressing.
14:41It's just, I don't know.
14:43It's not very good.
14:44And ginger sesame chicken salad.
14:46I have never seen a chicken salad that looks like this.
14:50This just looks like pieces of chicken.
14:53I think I'm noticing a pattern where the sides are just not as good as some of the other hot foods
14:59we've already tried.
15:01I don't know.
15:01These are missing something.
15:04In the UK, we have a small selection of exclusive soups.
15:07There were three options today.
15:08We have mum's chicken soup.
15:11That's a little bit sad, a little bit underwhelming.
15:13Next up, we have a minestrone soup.
15:15That's pretty good.
15:16Nice rich tomato-y taste.
15:17And then finally, we have a Burmese coconut soup.
15:22That's really good.
15:23Here are all the exclusive soups in the US.
15:26We've got New England clam chowder,
15:29carrot ginger,
15:31potato and leek,
15:33shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo.
15:36It smells like what gumbo should smell like,
15:41but I can't go off of that.
15:43The consistency looks kind of weird.
15:47Very watery and very bland.
15:49Vegan lentil dal with spinach and five lobster bisque.
15:55It's lobster bisque.
15:57This was the soup that when we opened the lid,
16:01it was still boiling hot in the container.
16:04Like you saw it actually boiling in the container.
16:06I don't feel like that's safe.
16:09Like the soup should be hot,
16:10just not boiling hot while people are serving it.
16:13It doesn't taste terrible.
16:19The consistency is bizarre.
16:22The consistency is very baby food-like.
16:25It feels like it's melting in my mouth
16:27as soon as it touches my tongue,
16:29but not in a pleasant way.
16:30So here is my perfect hot bar plate from Whole Foods.
16:35I feel like typically what I go for is some kind of protein,
16:39a cold pasta salad just because I love pasta salad,
16:43and a couple of vegetable items.
16:46The thing about the vegetables though
16:47is that some are really heavy.
16:49Some of the proteins are also really heavy.
16:51So I tried to keep that in mind when plating
16:53just because Whole Foods is so expensive.
16:57My total weight came out to around 442 grams,
17:00which if you convert that to pounds
17:02and multiply by the weight, the total price was $13.57.
17:06So let's talk about what I got.
17:08This is the chimichurri chicken legs.
17:11They smelled really, really good.
17:13So let's take a bite.
17:17Tastes good.
17:18The chicken looks cooked.
17:20I'm happy with that.
17:22I also got the lemon cucumber herbed couscous salad.
17:25I love couscous.
17:30No, I wouldn't get that again.
17:31It tastes like a mouthful of lemon dish soap.
17:34I got carrots with spring herbs,
17:36which I don't normally go for carrots,
17:39but they sounded yummy to me.
17:41They feel very firm and undercooked though.
17:46I think the herbs taste like slightly burnt,
17:49and the carrot is undercooked.
17:51So no, wouldn't get that again.
17:53And then I got the herb roasted potatoes.
17:56These were also very firm when I was picking them up,
17:58which makes me think they're also undercooked.
18:00But let's see.
18:03You're undercooked.
18:05The thing about the hot bar is that everything looks pretty good
18:09and smells kind of good.
18:11All the smells are mingling together.
18:13But once you actually pick up stuff that you've never tried before,
18:16it's really easy to go in either direction.
18:19Love it or hate it.
18:20I hated a lot of food today.
18:22Out of 10, I would give this plate maybe a five and a half.
18:26And most of those points are going to the chicken.
18:29Nico challenged me to assemble my ideal hot bar plate.
18:32I'm going to be honest.
18:33I think I panicked a bit.
18:34Not super thrilled with my choices,
18:36but here's what I've ended up with.
18:37I ended up with a bit of the cottage pie,
18:39which to be fair, I did actually quite like.
18:41I went for some of the rosemary potatoes,
18:43which in hindsight were a little bit disappointing.
18:45I can't lie.
18:45I did get some of that excellent mac and cheese in there.
18:47So I'm happy with that decision.
18:49And then I added some of those mint spinach peas.
18:53All in all, I will say I'm like reasonably happy with this.
18:55I could probably have chosen better,
18:57given a bit more time and the benefit of hindsight.
19:00All in all, I'd probably back this as like a sort of 6.57 out of 10.
19:04I was a little bit surprised when we got to the till,
19:06because this thing ended up weighing 540 grams and costing me £12.95.
19:11I think that for the amount of food that I got
19:13and for the overall quality and enjoyment level,
19:16I think almost £13 is a bit steep.
19:18About a month ago, I went to Whole Foods to do research for this video
19:22and saw that the price per pound was £11.99.
19:25Since then, that has gone up to £13.99 per pound.
19:30In the UK, the Whole Foods Hot Bar costs £2.40 per 100 grams.
19:33To bring that in line with the US figure, that's $13.64 per pound.
19:38Whole Foods isn't exactly known for being affordable here in America.
19:41It was actually nicknamed Whole Paycheck for a while because of how expensive it is.
19:46In 2017, Whole Foods was acquired by Amazon and prices did get lower for a bit,
19:51but they've since gone back up and it's still one of the most expensive grocery chains in the US.
19:56Whole Foods is definitely considered a more high-end grocery chain here in the UK,
19:59maybe comparable to something like a Waitrose.
20:01Even compared to Waitrose, I would say Whole Foods is probably less accessible,
20:05if nothing else, just because of the fact that there aren't that many in the UK.
20:08Whole Foods only has seven stores in the UK, pretty much all of which are in London,
20:12whereas Waitrose has, I think, around £329, and they're all around the country.
20:16The lack of brand awareness and popularity for Whole Foods in the UK,
20:19combined with its high prices, has definitely hit its sails.
20:22In 2022, Whole Foods reported a loss of £26.3 million, combined with a 2.9% drop in sales.
20:29In response, Whole Foods has tried to incorporate some well-loved UK brands
20:32into its range in order to lure in shoppers with some familiarity.
20:36Hot bars have become increasingly popular throughout the years,
20:39with more and more grocery stores implementing them to bring in extra revenue.
20:43Whole Foods, in particular, has a pretty big following when it comes to a top bar.
20:46I have friends who don't even shop at Whole Foods, they just go in for the hot bar.
20:50I think people think the high price is worth it because they think the quality is good.
20:55That's kind of Whole Foods' whole thing, is their quality standards.
20:58And Whole Foods actually doesn't even make their food in-house.
21:01It hasn't since 2017.
21:03After quite a few food safety issues, Whole Foods closed its in-store kitchens
21:08and switched to a third-party food production facility for its prepared foods.
21:12So they make the food, they send it off to Whole Foods,
21:14and then Whole Foods heats it up and serves it.
21:16I think there's some supermarket psychology behind what makes hot bars so appealing.
21:20People are often willing to spend a little bit more just for the convenience.
21:23It's very easy to overfill your container and then end up paying a little bit more.
21:26And also just seeing it there and experiencing the smells does make it pretty tempting.
21:30Buffet-style dining is definitely still popular in the UK,
21:32and it's something that Brits do enjoy.
21:34I do think it's had a drop in popularity obviously as a result partly of the pandemic,
21:38and just general consumer habits changing as well.
21:40I used to frequent the hot bar a lot pre-COVID, but since then I rarely go.
21:45I definitely feel a little scared to get sick from food a lot of strangers have been touching.
21:50I've also read too many horror stories about hot bar slash buffet food,
21:55like people getting really serious illnesses or rat poison being sprayed on the food.
22:00That one actually happened at a Whole Foods. Look it up.
22:03When it comes to the foods that I think are worth it at the hot bar,
22:06you know I love that meatloaf. It was actually pretty tasty to me.
22:09I do think the mashed potatoes were fine.
22:11They have a lot of great range with their salad options,
22:15which I thought was pretty nice.
22:17I definitely avoid the pizza, check your chicken,
22:21make sure it's not pink when you cut into it.
22:25Be suspicious at the Whole Foods hot bar.
22:27Whole Foods is known for its organic products.
22:29It says it's the first and only certified organic national grocery store.
22:33All of its organic foods have to meet several quality standards.
22:36They've banned over 300 colors, preservatives, flavors,
22:39and other additives like high-fructose corn syrup.
22:42And they've got this huge list of banned ingredients on their website,
22:45which I will show you on the screen now.
22:48Here in the UK, Whole Foods has banned over 230 ingredients from its stores.
22:52I think that number is lower because the UK and the EU already outlaw some chemicals
22:56that you guys are using in the US, but unfortunately in the UK,
22:59we can't see the full list, so we can't be certain.
23:01There is research that says organic diets can lead to less pesticide exposure,
23:06which in turn might help prevent certain diseases.
23:08But when it comes to nutrition, there's not much of a difference
23:12between organic and regular diets.
23:14Another way Whole Foods claims to maintain its ingredient quality
23:16is through its animal welfare standards.
23:18For example, one of its baseline standards is that all of its beef, cattle, sheep,
23:22and goats must spend at least two-thirds of their life on pasture.
23:26I guess this would be a good point for me to admit that I really have never been
23:29to a Whole Foods before.
23:30I think today was maybe the second time in my life that I've been to a Whole Foods.
23:34I think if I had to pick a few things that Whole Foods was maybe slightly known for in the UK,
23:38it would probably be maybe some bougie snacks, things like green juice.
23:43I think generally things that are associated more with that kind of like LA influencer culture.
23:48I think in America, people definitely associate Whole Foods with organic food.
23:53That's like their whole big thing.
23:55They also have a lot of health and wellness vibes.
23:59One of the core values on Whole Foods' website is to nourish people and the planet.
24:04They give off this very go-green, all-natural, organic health vibe,
24:10which is what they're most associated with here.
24:12You walk into a Whole Foods here and they have a lot of like supplements, vitamins,
24:18soaps that are all handmade and organic.
24:21So I feel like they're trying to give you the feel of like a farmer's market or something just
24:26in a grocery store setting.
24:29Whole Foods has a distribution partnership with UNFI, which is a natural and organic food
24:34distributor that's recently been seeing an uptick in unionization amongst its workers.
24:39This past May, Whole Foods and UNFI renewed their partnership, which is interesting,
24:43considering that Whole Foods tracks stores that are at risk of unionizing.
