00:00We wanted to find all the differences between Haribo in the U.S. and the U.K.
00:03This is Food Wars.
00:04Let's compare the sizes of Haribo's famous gold bears.
00:07In the U.K., they come in these sizes.
00:09These remind me of Christmas.
00:11My family usually gets one of these and we get through it
00:13pretty much all in Christmas morning before our dinner.
00:14And in the U.S., our Haribo gold bears come in way more sizes.
00:19I couldn't get all of them today. Here's the ones I did get.
00:21What about the largest packs of gold bears?
00:23Well, in the U.K., we were able to find
00:24this three kilogram bag of gold bears.
00:29This thing is an absolute beast.
00:31Just look how many gold bears you get in there.
00:32But wait, there's more.
00:34You also get these big bags.
00:35Down here, we have a 28.8-ounce bag, so specific.
00:38Two-pound bag. That was less intriguing, but it's got what it counts.
00:43Three-pound bag.
00:45Yes!
00:46In the U.S., we have this, the five-pound bag,
00:50which is actually 24% smaller than the U.K.'s largest.
00:53One thing I wanted to find out is how many of each flavor
00:56you're getting in a bag of gold bears.
00:57I've got a 160-gram bag here.
00:59Let's find out.
01:04Okay, yeah.
01:05So pretty generous when it comes to the raspberry and the apple flavor.
01:09Not so generous when it comes to strawberry.
01:12Skimping on the strawberry, guys,
01:13which is annoying because one of the best flavors.
01:15Gold bears in the U.K. and U.S. are a little different.
01:18Apart from the fact that the U.S. ones are more colorful
01:20thanks to artificial food dye, they also have different flavors.
01:24All right, I got my European gold bears right here.
01:27Let's see what we got.
01:29In front of me are gold bears separated by color,
01:32this being the U.S. and this being the European-U.K. version.
01:36In the U.S., the flavors are green is strawberry,
01:40red is raspberry,
01:41translucent, pineapple, yellow, lemon, and orange.
01:45Get this, orange.
01:46I'm sorry, I'm just learning this now.
01:48Green being strawberry flavor makes no sense.
01:51What are you doing there?
01:52Red is strawberry or maybe pink is strawberry.
01:55Green? No, come on.
01:57In the U.K., the green ones are, of course,
01:58apple flavored, as it should be.
02:01Visually, they're obviously different.
02:02Let's give them a try.
02:03I mean, I don't know.
02:04Like, I feel like,
02:06I don't know gold there would taste like that.
02:08I actually don't know what my favorite one is.
02:10Often I'm just eating them in, like, handfuls
02:12and not really paying attention to the color.
02:13Strawberry's good.
02:15Give us more strawberry.
02:16Six in a bag?
02:17Come on, man.
02:18They actually do taste of the thing
02:19they're supposed to taste of,
02:20which is actually harder to do sometimes
02:22than you can credit for.
02:24I feel like the American ones,
02:26the gummies are a lot harder
02:28and the taste is more artificial.
02:31The size of the gold bears doesn't seem to change,
02:33but if you do fancy a bigger one,
02:34you can soak it in water overnight.
02:36Here's one I made earlier.
02:37Oh, it feels really gross.
02:39I mean, yeah, it kind of works.
02:41But before TikTok declares this,
02:43the infinite gummy bear glitch,
02:44all that happened was osmosis.
02:47See, gelatin does not dissolve in water.
02:49So what it did is trap all the water
02:52inside its many strands,
02:53thus expanding the size of the bear.
02:56It feels weird.
02:57Oh, no.
03:00Oh, no.
03:02Hmm.
03:03I don't like that at all.
03:04They have zero chewiness anymore.
03:07That just kind of, like, crumbles.
03:09Oh, no, no, no.
03:10Unpleasant.
03:11Here are all the Haribo products from the UK
03:12that you won't find in the US.
03:14Here's a lot of the Haribos
03:15you can find in the US,
03:17you can't find in the UK.
03:18We're starting off with a banger here
03:19and something that I'm shocked
03:20is not available in the US,
03:22which is Haribo Tangfastics.
03:24I would say that alongside StarMix,
03:25these are probably the most popular Haribo in the UK.
03:27These were introduced in 1997
03:28and they're kind of like
03:29a sour candy alternative to StarMix.
03:32Typically with Tangfastics,
03:33you're getting four shapes.
03:34You have the sour cherries,
03:36the sour cola bottles,
03:37you have these, like,
03:38crocodile animal things
03:40with the white sugar candy underneath,
03:42and then you have dummies,
03:43or as I think Americans call them,
03:45pacifiers.
03:46These are fantastic.
03:47I think the cherries generally are my favourites.
03:49You guys are really missing out.
03:50In terms of, like, sour candy in the UK,
03:53these are probably the number one.
03:55Next up, we have Jelly Babies.
03:57Jelly Babies are another classic UK suite,
03:59although I would say that Bassett's
04:00probably has the main share of the market.
04:02They actually have a surprisingly dark origin story.
04:05Instead of Jelly Babies,
04:05these used to be called Unclaimed Babies,
04:08and someone thought it would be a good idea
04:09to name a suite after those,
04:11and people found it funny.
04:12They have these, yeah,
04:13slightly haunting faces
04:14kind of imprinted onto them.
04:18Look, in the US,
04:19we don't have Tangfastics
04:20or Abandoned Jelly Babies,
04:22but we do have
04:23sour gold bearers.
04:25Fun fact about me,
04:26you ready for Joe's Fun Facts?
04:29I hate sour candy.
04:30I hate sour-flavored anything.
04:32I don't get the peel
04:33why people want sour candy.
04:34It's gross.
04:35Why do I want to eat something
04:36that makes my mouth taste
04:37like I just threw up?
04:39I don't think all sour candy's gross,
04:41and I haven't had these before,
04:42but watch me not like them.
04:51No thanks.
04:51This summer,
04:52Haribo released red,
04:54white,
04:54and blue gold bears.
04:55Let's get a look at that,
04:56which are raspberry,
04:58pineapple,
04:58and berry flavored.
04:59You know this is American
05:01because it uses the colors
05:02red, white,
05:02and blue
05:03from our flag,
05:05unlike the colors
05:05of the UK flag.
05:07And we also got these,
05:08Happy Cola Booyah.
05:09Isn't that cola flavored?
05:10It does smell like cola.
05:14Could have more of a cola flavor,
05:15but yeah,
05:15I do like these.
05:16We also have Happy Cherries,
05:18which I could not get today.
05:19Next up,
05:20we have Supermix.
05:21It's another classic from the UK.
05:22I think these have been around
05:23since 1996.
05:24They're in like a similar ballpark
05:25to StarMix
05:26in that they're not sour,
05:28and they mostly focus
05:28on the kind of like
05:29chewy, soft textures.
05:31One notable Supermix item
05:32not found in StarMix
05:33are the milk bottles.
05:34Milk bottles are like
05:35a classic British sweet.
05:36They vary slightly,
05:37like some of them
05:37are a bit more like powdery,
05:39whereas this one
05:40is more of a chewy, gummy texture.
05:42To put it in an American perspective,
05:43maybe think of like a milk dud.
05:45Kind of similar to that.
05:46Here we have Haribo Giant Straubs.
05:48Personally,
05:48love a giant straw.
05:50These are specified as giant
05:52because they're these
05:52kind of like long and flat ones,
05:54whereas you can get straubs,
05:55I think,
05:56from other manufacturers,
05:57which tend to be smaller
05:58and more like a domed,
05:59three-dimensional sweet.
06:01Compared to like a StarMix,
06:02they have a much like
06:03chewier texture to them.
06:04That's actually because
06:05these aren't made with gelatin.
06:06These ones are made with a starch
06:08instead to help thicken them,
06:09which does make them
06:10vegetarian as well.
06:11Next up,
06:11we have Haribo Pontefract Cakes.
06:14The name doesn't give much away,
06:15but the packaging might do.
06:16These are licorice sweets,
06:17which are manufactured by Haribo.
06:19Pontefract is a village
06:20in West Yorkshire,
06:21which is famous
06:21for its licorice production.
06:23Pontefract Cakes,
06:24I think,
06:24used to be made
06:25by a company called Dunhills,
06:26which Haribo acquired
06:27several years ago.
06:28So now they are
06:28Haribo Pontefract Cakes.
06:30I do not like licorice,
06:31so I'm probably not
06:32going to try these,
06:33unfortunately.
06:33I would say licorice
06:34is like an acquired taste,
06:35and it's one which,
06:36sadly,
06:36I have not acquired.
06:38One thing I wasn't
06:38really aware of,
06:39but that apparently exists,
06:40are these Haribo marshmallows,
06:42or chamallows,
06:43as they're called.
06:44I guess when you have,
06:45you know,
06:45a load of sugar and gelatin
06:46in your factory,
06:47it makes sense to also
06:48produce marshmallows.
06:49Things I like about this,
06:50on the back,
06:51it says,
06:51caution hot when barbecued.
06:53Caution,
06:53hot when hot.
06:54Here we have Haribo Wine Gums,
06:56another one that I wasn't sure
06:57Haribo manufactured,
06:58but apparently they do.
06:59Wine Gums were some of the
06:59earliest gummy sweets
07:01introduced to the UK.
07:02I would say the company
07:02that's more known
07:03for manufacturing these
07:04is Maynard's
07:05rather than Haribo,
07:06but again,
07:06Haribo wants to get in
07:07on the action.
07:08Here are our exclusive
07:09shapes and flavors.
07:10For gummy mixes,
07:12we have Unicornalicious,
07:15which is apple,
07:16blue raspberry,
07:17a berry punch,
07:18banana,
07:19and for the first time,
07:20cotton candy and tangerine.
07:22For those of you who love fun
07:23and fantastic mixes,
07:25we have the Fun-tastic mix.
07:28All right,
07:30the worms have shown up finally,
07:31rainbow worms,
07:33lemon, strawberry,
07:34and blackcurrant,
07:35which is not a very popular
07:36flavor here in the US,
07:37very popular in the UK.
07:39We usually go grape,
07:41but blackcurrant,
07:41good for them.
07:42I mean, worms,
07:42you know what things look like.
07:43I'm starting to get a headache.
07:45Dinosaurs, right?
07:47Strawberry, mango,
07:48banana, melon,
07:49and blackcurrant.
07:50Yo, blackcurrant
07:51moving in on the US.
07:53Frogs.
07:54Ooh, peach flavor,
07:55which is kind of a weird
07:56choice for frogs.
07:59Let me ask you guys a question.
08:00If you had to do
08:01a frog-shaped candy,
08:03what flavor would you make it?
08:05Sour apple.
08:05Yeah, that's good.
08:07Sour apple.
08:07Sour apple, that's good.
08:08I have no proof of this,
08:11but I think a lot of working
08:12for a company like this
08:14is being like,
08:15we need a new shape
08:16and we need some fun flavors.
08:18And it's just like
08:18a whole whiteboard,
08:20top to bottom,
08:21every shape they can make
08:23and every flavor they can make.
08:24And they're just like,
08:25ah, frogs, peach, go.
08:27Here's the thing,
08:28I do like peach-flavored stuff,
08:30so I think those are very good,
08:31but I would never have gone
08:33if I saw that in the store
08:34and been like,
08:35oh yeah, frogs, peach.
08:37Alphabet Latours.
08:39We have the Smurfs
08:40for everyone over the age of 47,
08:42which come in flavors
08:43of strawberry and raspberry.
08:46These came out in the US
08:47in 2013 for the Smurfs 2 movie.
08:49I for real did not know
08:50there was any Smurf movies
08:51until right now.
08:52Are they any good?
08:53Harry, have you seen them?
08:54While I also unfortunately
08:56have not seen the Smurfs movies,
08:57the Smurfs being available
08:58in the US gives me a chance
08:59to talk about something
09:00that Brits love,
09:01which is European Haribo.
09:02For me,
09:02there are a few greater pleasures
09:03than going to a random
09:04European country on holiday,
09:06walking down the snack aisle
09:07and picking out a few random things
09:08that you would not usually find at home.
09:10Some other good European examples
09:11for me include
09:12the French-helling Orangina Haribo
09:13as well as Dragibou
09:15and the Germans have Haribo peaches
09:16or Pfecher.
09:18And rainbow mini frogs.
09:20Regularized-sized frogs
09:22are only peach,
09:22but apparently in mini form,
09:24strawberry, lemon,
09:25orange, and raspberry.
09:28We actually have
09:28a fair few vegetarian options.
09:30Here we have these
09:30troppy slices.
09:31These are tropical-flavored gummies.
09:33We have blood, orange,
09:34pineapple, and watermelon.
09:35Similarly to these strawbs,
09:37they are made with a starch
09:38rather than a gelatin.
09:39So they are vegetarian
09:40and again have that
09:41quite dense, chewy texture.
09:43Another vegetarian option
09:44are the sour sparks.
09:45They come in these
09:45lightning bolt shapes
09:46and each one has two flavors
09:48in the same gummy.
09:49You have a raspberry and pineapple.
09:51There is also an apple and cherry
09:52and a cola and lemon.
09:54Those flavors broadly
09:54seem to go together.
09:55We even have a vegan option.
09:57These are the rainbow strips,
09:58the zing version.
09:59It seems like what makes
10:01these vegan versus vegetarian
10:02is that they do not have
10:03beeswax in them,
10:04whereas a vegetarian one
10:05like this does.
10:06One product that I really
10:07wanted to get,
10:08but unfortunately the delivery
10:09did not come through,
10:10were Awesome Axolotls.
10:12These are a new addition
10:12to the Haribo lineup
10:13and apparently they are
10:14gummy sweets with foam bases
10:15and they come in strawberry,
10:17blackcurrant, pineapple,
10:18apple, and raspberry flavors.
10:19It's a response to a social media
10:21trend about Axolotls.
10:22They're very popular online.
10:23Apparently videos of Axolotls
10:24generated 3 billion views in 2023.
10:27I actually really wanted one
10:28as a pet.
10:28I thought they were very cute.
10:29They look like the Pokemon Mudkip,
10:31which is always great.
10:32So yeah,
10:33we'll keep an eye out
10:34for those in the store.
10:35Next up we have
10:35Haribo Soda Twists.
10:37These are basically just
10:38bigger versions of the Coke bottles.
10:40The twist aspect comes from
10:41the fact that each of them
10:42have two flavors in them
10:43and they're also part
10:44of the zing range,
10:45which I think again means
10:46you have that kind of
10:46citric acid,
10:47granulated sugar on the outside.
10:49I said it before
10:51and I'll say it again.
10:52I do not like
10:54sour flavored candies.
10:56Not a fan of any of this.
10:57I don't understand
10:58why this is a thing.
10:59I think it's gross.
11:00But if you are,
11:01we have Sour Streamers.
11:07Sour Cherry,
11:09Sour Blue Raspberry.
11:10Look at that.
11:11Sour Orange,
11:13and Sour Apple.
11:14Sour Sketti.
11:16I don't know why
11:17they just do
11:18S a pasta spaghetti,
11:19why not sour spaghetti?
11:20Sour Sketti.
11:21Ah,
11:22for all the Italians
11:24who want candy for them.
11:28Hmm.
11:31Taste,
11:31I like puke.
11:32Oh,
11:33this is so sour.
11:35Why subject yourself to this?
11:36Sour Smurfs?
11:37Ugh.
11:38No.
11:40And
11:40what is this?
11:42Oh,
11:43why is it fizzy cola here?
11:44Maybe,
11:44maybe this is more of my alley,
11:46a,
11:47oh,
11:47sour and tangy.
11:48Ugh.
11:49I'm surprised the,
11:50the fizzy colas
11:51aren't an option in the UK.
11:52Uh,
11:53you guys
11:53call things fizzy,
11:55we don't.
11:56So right off the bat,
11:56it's like,
11:57fizzy's your word,
11:58not ours.
11:59Then we have a bunch more
12:00random options that I found.
12:01We'll start with these.
12:02These are the
12:03Haribo Balastix.
12:04Most Brits will know these
12:05as strawberry pencils,
12:07but Haribo has their own version
12:08called Balastix.
12:09Basically,
12:09the outside is almost like
12:11a strawberry licorice
12:12and then on the inside
12:13you have a slightly softer,
12:15almost creamy,
12:15kind of like sugary filling.
12:17We also have Balastix Zing
12:19and then the final Balor option,
12:21Balor Bites.
12:22I was also able to find
12:23just a bag of fried eggs.
12:24I don't think I've ever seen
12:25these before until today
12:26but here we are,
12:27Haribo fried eggs.
12:28Whereas the standard ones
12:29that you get in Star Mix,
12:30you have like a lemon jelly on top.
12:32These ones also have
12:32a raspberry and apple flavor.
12:34The theme continues
12:35of Haribo just like
12:36getting in on everyone's business.
12:38Haribo apparently make
12:38jelly beans as well.
12:40Here we have Haribo Fantasia.
12:42These kind of just seem
12:43like another version
12:44of Star Mix to be honest.
12:46I get it to a degree,
12:47just like repurposing
12:48the same ingredients
12:49but this seems unimaginative.
12:51Next we have strawberry softies.
12:53The strawberry softies
12:54have such a distinct flavor
12:55and texture.
12:56It's quite hard to describe
12:58if you've never tried one
12:59because they're actually
13:00like quite solid.
13:01Like you squish them
13:02and there's quite a lot
13:03of resistance there
13:04but then when you start eating them,
13:05your saliva hits it,
13:07they kind of dissolve.
13:08For this video,
13:08I was tasked with sourcing
13:09a box of happy
13:11which apparently includes
13:12cupcakes, stars, hearts
13:13and present-shaped sweets.
13:15What I ended up getting
13:16slightly by mistake
13:16is a happy box
13:17which I think is actually
13:19a French import
13:20just because we have
13:21the French Haribo slogan
13:23on the side there.
13:24Haribo, c'est beau la vie,
13:26pour le grand et le petit.
13:28We don't have alphabet letters
13:29but what we do have
13:30are spelly jellies.
13:32One limited edition product
13:33that I found was
13:33Football Frenzy Haribo.
13:35I guess limited edition
13:36because maybe they're released
13:37around like international
13:38football tournament times
13:39but yeah,
13:40they are Haribo gummy candies
13:41in vaguely football-themed shapes.
13:44Because we're filming
13:44our portion of this
13:45in late October,
13:46we currently have both
13:47Halloween and Christmas
13:48seasonal items available.
13:49Here we have
13:50Haribo sour skeletons
13:51and then currently in the UK
13:52we also have two
13:53Christmas Haribo options.
13:55Here we have
13:55Haribo elf surprises
13:57and merry mix.
13:58The surprise for the elves
14:00is that some of these
14:00are sweet and some are sour
14:01and then this one
14:02is just a merry mix
14:03of shapes and flavors.
14:05Apparently these ones
14:05include a candy floss flavor
14:07and a marshmallow flavor.
14:09Little snowman,
14:10he's pretty cute.
14:10Smells like a milk bottle.
14:12I'm going to toast
14:12that one too.
14:13I think these instead of like,
14:14these are jelly babies
14:15but I think they're supposed
14:16to be gingerbread men.
14:17They've got little
14:17like belly button things.
14:18I was trying to find
14:19a candy floss flavor
14:20which apparently is in here
14:21but now I'm increasingly
14:21realizing like candy floss
14:23is just sugar
14:23and all of these are sugar
14:24so I guess you can call
14:25anything candy floss.
14:26The exact opposite of sour,
14:28sugar coated.
14:28We got watermelons,
14:31berry clouds.
14:32These feature the
14:32triple layer foam gummy.
14:36Wow, really soft.
14:37I like the texture of those.
14:39I think I like a little more snap,
14:40a little more bite
14:41to my gummy candy.
14:42It's a little softer than I like
14:42but I get it.
14:44We got the Haribo berries
14:45which actually look
14:46like actual berries.
14:47I think that's fun.
14:48Now is this a good way
14:49to trick your kids
14:50into eating fruits?
14:51You get them to eat these first
14:52and then one day you're like,
14:53hey, they changed the formula.
14:54Now they're like squishier.
14:55Fruit salad,
14:58cherry, peach,
14:59orange, grapefruit,
15:00lemon and passion fruits.
15:02Sugar dusted gummies.
15:04There's also a ginger lemon option
15:06which we cannot get today.
15:07A type of sweet
15:07that Brits might not even know
15:09is a Haribo product
15:09are Mauams.
15:10Fun word to say,
15:11Mauam.
15:12These are really popular in the UK.
15:13Mauam was actually bought
15:14by Haribo back in 1986.
15:17These do exist in America
15:18which is not quite sure
15:19if they're the same over there
15:20as they are here.
15:20The thing with Mauam
15:21is that it's kind of
15:22one type of candy
15:23that comes in a range of shapes.
15:24We have Mauam stripes.
15:26We have Mauam joysticks.
15:27We have Mauam pinballs
15:28and you can get Maumix.
15:30The Maumix combines the stripes,
15:31the joysticks
15:32and also the,
15:33I guess,
15:33original Mauams
15:34which are the individually wrapped
15:35rectangular ones.
15:37I'm going to open up
15:38one of the Mauam stripes
15:39and show you guys
15:40what it's like
15:40just in case it is different
15:41in the US.
15:42Kind of in terms of texture
15:44and stuff,
15:44quite similar to like
15:45taffy in America
15:46because it's really quite rigid.
15:48We also have Mauam in the US
15:49but it's not nearly as popular.
15:51We were not able to get any today
15:52but looking online,
15:53we do have options
15:54of getting the stripes,
15:56the blocks with two X's,
15:58the Mau mix,
15:59crotchers,
16:00cratchers,
16:01crackers
16:01and pinballs.
16:02In the US,
16:03we also have an assortment
16:04of kosher products
16:05including the happy cherries,
16:06quoxy frogs,
16:08grapefruit,
16:09sour worms
16:09and tagada.
16:12I have no clue
16:13what any of that stuff is.
16:14Anyway,
16:14we got them somewhere.
16:16In the UK,
16:17100 grams of gold bears
16:18contains the following.
16:19343 calories,
16:20less than 0.5 grams of fat
16:22of which 0.1 grams are saturated,
16:2477 grams of carbs
16:26of which 46 grams are sugars,
16:286.9 grams of protein
16:29and 28 milligrams of sodium.
16:31Guess I shouldn't be surprised
16:32by the sugar.
16:33I'm a little bit surprised
16:34by the calories.
16:34I did not think there was
16:35that many calories
16:36in a gold bear.
16:37In the UK,
16:37the recommended individual portion size
16:39is actually just 25 grams.
16:41That's lower than the 30 gram
16:42recommended portion size
16:43in America.
16:44If you just ate 25 grams
16:46of gold bears
16:46which is technically one portion,
16:48that would be 13%
16:49of your daily recommended
16:50sugar intake.
16:51In the US,
16:52a regular bag of gold bears
16:54per 100 grams
16:55has 330 calories,
16:590 grams of fat,
17:000.33 grams of saturated fat,
17:0276.59 grams of carbohydrates,
17:0646.62 grams of sugar,
17:086.66 grams of protein,
17:11and 16.65 milligrams of sodium.
17:15A 30 gram portion of gold bears
17:18will provide you with 14 grams of sugar
17:20which is 28% of your daily intake.
17:22So there isn't much difference
17:24in nutrition between US
17:25and UK Haribo
17:26but the US's bigger portion size
17:29technically makes them
17:30a more unhealthy option
17:32in the US.
17:33And here are the Haribo gold bears
17:36ingredients in the UK.
17:37Just to pick out a few
17:38of the more confusing ingredients there,
17:40spirulina is actually
17:41a type of seaweed.
17:42Spirulina emerged
17:43as kind of the new
17:44blue food colouring
17:45after we stopped using blue one
17:46back in the UK
17:47quite a few years ago.
17:48Bilberries are technically
17:49from the same family
17:50as blueberries
17:51but have a slightly darker flesh.
17:53Aronia is also known
17:54as chokeberry.
17:55The name sounds scary
17:56but they are perfectly harmless
17:57and the name choke
17:58comes from the fact
17:59that they have quite
17:59an astringent flavour
18:00which really makes your mouth
18:01kind of pucker
18:01when you eat them.
18:02Here's everything
18:03in Haribo gold bears
18:04in the US.
18:05Our Haribo gold bears
18:07have artificial food colouring
18:08such as yellow number 5
18:10which is E-103,
18:11red 40
18:12which is E-129
18:13and blue
18:14and number 1.
18:15In the UK
18:16our gold bears
18:16contain no artificial colours
18:18or flavours.
18:19Artificial colours
18:20like red 40,
18:21yellow 5,
18:22yellow 6
18:22and blue 1
18:23are restricted in the UK
18:24since studies have linked them
18:25to hyperactivity
18:26in children.
18:27Healthline reported
18:28that in the last 50 years
18:29consumption of artificial
18:30food dice
18:31have gone up
18:32by a whopping
18:32500%
18:34and the biggest consumers
18:36are children.
18:38I want to see
18:38if the colours make a difference
18:39look at a side by side
18:40of the colours
18:41in each country.
18:42This row on front
18:42US gold bears
18:44this row behind
18:45are the UK gold bears.
18:47The first artificial
18:48food colourings
18:49were actually created
18:49as far back as 1856.
18:51Back then
18:52they were made
18:52from coal tar
18:53and today
18:54they're still made
18:54from petroleum.
18:55Can we make one
18:56without fossil fuels
18:57in it maybe
18:57please?
18:58Haribo's in the US
18:59commonly contained
19:00carnauba wax.
19:01It's a vegetable wax
19:02from the carnauba palm
19:03of Brazil.
19:05Haribo ran into
19:05some trouble
19:06back in 2017.
19:07A German documentary
19:08aired which accused
19:09the company
19:09of purchasing
19:10carnauba wax
19:11that had been produced
19:11under conditions
19:12akin to modern slavery.
19:13Haribo launched
19:14an investigation
19:15and later said
19:16it found no evidence
19:17supporting these claims
19:18but it has since
19:20switched suppliers,
19:21started using beeswax
19:22and helped found
19:24an organisation
19:24to source
19:25carnauba responsibly.
19:26One other thing
19:28to note is that
19:28most UK Haribos
19:29are gluten,
19:30milk and nut free.
19:32The exception there
19:32are the pontefract cakes
19:33which have gluten in them.
19:35Much of the gelatin
19:35used in Haribos
19:36in the UK
19:37comes from pork.
19:38To that end
19:38they offer kosher
19:39and halal products
19:40which are either made
19:41with beef or fish gelatin.
19:42As we mentioned before
19:43instead of gelatin
19:44some of the vegetarian
19:45products are thickened
19:46with starch.
19:47In the US however
19:47Haribo uses wheat
19:49and dairy
19:49in some products
19:50so everything in the US
19:52might contain traces
19:53of those.
19:53The US does offer
19:54vegetarian options
19:55like the Sour Streamers,
19:57Zing Sour Sketti
19:59and Kosher Haribos.
20:00Both the UK
20:01and US import Haribos
20:03from other countries
20:04from time to time
20:05to meet demand
20:06so the company suggests
20:07checking the back
20:08of the packets.
20:09Let's check it right now.
20:11Look at that.
20:13Rosemont, Illinois.
20:15These says they were
20:16made in Spain
20:16and these were
20:18made in Brazil.
20:20This is globe-trouting.
20:22For a brief moment
20:22back in 2016
20:23Haribos sugar-free
20:24gold bears
20:25contained the sweetener
20:26Lycocin.
20:28The gummy bears
20:29were lower in calories
20:31but gave many consumers
20:32stomach issues
20:33that included
20:33intense cramping
20:35and in some cases
20:36severe diarrhea.
20:40Some Amazon reviews
20:40described their experience
20:42as gastrointestinal Armageddon,
20:45a torrential flood
20:46of toxic waste
20:47and power washing
20:49your intestines.
20:50Ooh.
20:50At most UK supermarkets
20:53this 175-gram bag
20:55of gold bears
20:56will cost you
20:56£1.25.
20:57That's a cost of
20:5871.4 pence
20:59per 100 grams.
21:00In the US
21:01we do not have
21:01a 175-gram portion size.
21:04We do have
21:04an 8-ounce
21:05or 226.8-gram bag.
21:08It costs
21:09$2.08.
21:10So,
21:11per 100 grams
21:12it costs
21:1291 cents.
21:13I'll round it up
21:14to 92 cents.
21:15So that's around
21:1671p.
21:17So it looks like
21:18it's the same cost
21:18in each country.
21:19Nice.
21:22The name Haribo
21:23is actually
21:23a portmanteau
21:24of Hans,
21:25Riegel and Bonn.
21:26Hans Riegel
21:26is the founder
21:27of the company
21:27and he was born
21:28in 1893
21:29in Bonn, Germany.
21:31Cut to World War II
21:31and Haribo
21:32as well as
21:33the rest of Germany
21:34ran into
21:34a few issues.
21:35Hans Riegel
21:36actually passed away
21:37in 1945
21:37and his two sons
21:39were taken
21:39as prisoners of war
21:40by the Allied forces.
21:41When the sons
21:41were released
21:42they rebuilt the company
21:43quickly and successfully.
21:44Within just five years
21:45Haribo had over
21:46a thousand workers.
21:47Haribo came back
21:48to the UK
21:48in 1972
21:49when it brought
21:50the confectionery company
21:51Dunhills
21:51the original manufacturers
21:53of Pontefract cakes.
21:54Haribo eventually
21:55made its way
21:55to the US
21:56in 1982
21:57in its stiff competition
21:58from the likes
21:59of Jelly Belly
22:00that was then known
22:01as the Herman Golitz
22:02Candy Company
22:03which had started
22:04making gummy bears
22:05in the US
22:05around 1991
22:06and Trolley
22:08with its gummy worms.
22:09In terms of
22:10worldwide popularity
22:11in 2024
22:12Haribo ranked 8th
22:13among the top 100
22:14global candy companies.
22:15In June 2024
22:16Haribo announced
22:17plans to invest
22:18300 million euros
22:19in a new factory
22:20in Germany
22:20to meet global demand.
22:22Over the years
22:22Haribo has secured
22:23its status
22:24as one of the leading
22:25gummy manufacturers
22:26in the world
22:27that produces
22:28160 million gold bears
22:30every single day.
22:33Clearly Haribo
22:33is still growing
22:34as its website
22:35proudly states
22:36they are the number one
22:37in fruit gummies
22:38worldwide.
22:38I think when it comes
22:39to Haribo
22:39my personal favorites
22:40are just kind of
22:41the classics.
22:42I think Tangfastics
22:42is probably my number one
22:43followed up by maybe
22:45a gummy bear
22:45or a star mix.
22:46I do think the Haribo brand
22:47is really strong
22:48here in the UK.
22:49It's a lot of people's
22:50first choice
22:50when it comes to
22:51kind of gummy candies
22:52especially seeing as
22:53pick and mix
22:53I feel like has been
22:54on the decline
22:54for a few years.
22:55I could eat gummy
22:56non-stop.
22:58I could eat a truckload
22:59I could just
23:00not stop eating gummy
23:01but now I have
23:02a splitting headache
23:04because of all the sugar.
23:05So I do like
23:06all gummy flavored things
23:07but for me
23:08I gotta stay away from it
23:09because I can't stop.
23:10My teeth are killing me
23:11right now
23:11from this episode.
