00:00This week we're at the incredible Battersea Dogs and Cat Zone
00:03where our designers are creating special spaces for these beautiful animals.
00:08Who's a good boy? Yes, you are.
00:11And apparently there's a dog here that reminds the staff so much of me
00:15they've named him Alan.
00:17I'm guessing he's a super friendly retriever or glamorous poodle.
00:22Here he is. Alan, meet Alan.
00:24Oh, he's lovely, but he doesn't even look like me.
00:30Fair enough. Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:35Little Alan needs a mint.
00:39Last time.
00:40Piers, I've got an idea.
00:42The designers did up apartments for the over-60s.
00:45Is this Lola? Yeah.
00:46How she lost an eye? I think she was drunk.
00:50Craig and Bryony's imaginary clients.
00:53That's Julia and David's. Oh, and so who's that?
00:55That's their friends.
00:57One of them's standout space.
00:59Thank you, Michelle.
01:01John's rooms were too pared back.
01:03The words are nice and inoffensive, and that's not good enough.
01:07Landing him on the sofa.
01:09I had actually started doing some after that room.
01:12I ran out of time.
01:13But it was Holly and Aisha's mythical clients.
01:16We got a retired mermaid and a retired sailor that fell in love.
01:19Is there gas coming out of him?
01:21That landed them in hot water.
01:23I'm so sorry, but you two will be leaving us this week.
01:28That's been really good feedback, definitely.
01:29Week four, new challenge.
01:42I know. What a challenge.
01:44First standout space, coming into this week on a high,
01:47it gave me a little confidence boost
01:49that leaning into me and doing my style
01:51and adding in all those Bryony-isms is like a good thing to do.
01:55Dog rooms.
01:56They're certainly pushing us, aren't they?
01:58Yeah, they are.
01:59I don't know what to expect, really, now.
02:01So last week, I had a brilliant time working with Bryony,
02:04and, of course, we won standout space.
02:06That puts a lot of pressure to perform this week,
02:09and the standard is high, so I've got to keep going hard.
02:12I just think it's such a challenge.
02:14It's such a challenge.
02:15The client is a dog.
02:17I know.
02:18I never thought I'd be designing a room for dogs.
02:21Never.
02:22I've never had a dog before.
02:23All I've got now is fish.
02:25So I'll have a clue.
02:27How you doing, guys?
02:29Hey.
02:30Hello.
02:32I brought a little pal.
02:34I thought he might be more useful than me.
02:37Now, when I heard about this challenge, I was so excited.
02:41I ran around the room three times,
02:43then rolled on my back, wanting a tummy tickle.
02:46Yes, you're heading to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
02:49to transform some special spaces for their four-legged guests.
02:54Will you take me home?
02:58Battersea re-homes around 6,000 animals every year
03:02to help the dogs adjust and learn the skills they need
03:05to thrive in their forever homes,
03:07they are brought into transitional rooms for training.
03:11Each designer will be assigned one of these spaces
03:13to transform into a home away from home.
03:17Will you take me home?
03:20So, Michelle, what do the designers have to do
03:23to get your tail wagging?
03:24Well, clearly, you must have a Basset in every room.
03:29Beyond that, this challenge is about creating a pet-friendly design
03:33to get Battersea's rescue dogs used to a home environment.
03:36So, I want you to think relaxing, but also stimulating,
03:41durable and functional.
03:44And for this Dogtastic Challenge,
03:46we needed a guest judge who was playful and fun.
03:49So, joining Michelle is comedian and Battersea ambassador,
03:53the super perky Sue Perkins.
03:57We love a bit of Sue, don't we?
03:59Love Sue.
04:00You've got two days and a budget of £1,100 each
04:04to create a room that will make these Battersea pooches
04:07feel like top dogs.
04:10See you.
04:11Good luck.
04:11But I would walk 500 miles
04:15And I would walk 500 more
04:19The designers have arrived at Battersea for a client meeting
04:22to get the lowdown on what's needed.
04:24Here we are, London.
04:25Yay!
04:26I'm excited to meet some dogs.
04:28I know.
04:29We should just get in the cages with them.
04:31But since none of them speak dog,
04:33they'll have to make do with a Battersea insider instead.
04:37Hi, guys.
04:38Welcome to Battersea.
04:39It's lovely to have you.
04:40Just joining me, we've got Fox and Dana.
04:43These are two of over 120 dogs
04:46that we've got with us at the London site at the moment.
04:48So, a lot of dogs that will obviously be utilising
04:51the rooms that you guys are going to create for us.
04:53So, what do you do in these transition rooms primarily?
04:56So, it's anything from training, relaxing,
05:00teaching them to settle,
05:02or potentially even introducing to new customers as well.
05:06Some of our dogs obviously come from, you know,
05:08backgrounds where we maybe don't know what they've been through.
05:11So, we might just have to get them used to
05:13being in that home environment again.
05:15So, I'm wondering, how much do you want this to look like
05:17an actual home environment?
05:18We'd be happy with sort of interpretations
05:21as well as sort of, you know, full-on,
05:24this could be in someone's home.
05:25So, if we could have different areas that do different things,
05:28then obviously that means that we can do more.
05:31Making sure that our indoor spaces are as enriching as possible
05:34is important to us as well.
05:37Are there any big no-nos to put in this room?
05:39Probably anything that is very easy to pull apart.
05:42The softer it is, for some of the dogs,
05:44they might really gravitate towards wanting to play with that
05:47and pull that off.
05:47It's trying to see the room from their eyes, not ours.
05:51It was great meeting Becky
05:53and her kind of words of wisdom on the space
05:55to hear how important they can be for new dogs.
05:59It kind of run the fear through me,
06:00but also it's a really special place.
06:02So, it's kind of a small room with big ambition.
06:07It was super helpful realising
06:09all the different things that the space is going to be used for.
06:12But also what became really apparent
06:14is just how robust the space needs to be.
06:18These dogs are going to hammer it.
06:19There's going to be everything from tiny little dogs
06:21to huge dogs in that space.
06:24So, it needs to be able to cope with them all.
06:31Wow, this is jolly.
06:33The designers have their work cut out
06:35if they're to impress both dogs and trainers.
06:39And all in their tiniest space yet,
06:42just 15 square metres.
06:44It's going to be cosy in here.
06:46And each room has a large column in the middle.
06:49I'm just thinking about where different things are going to go
06:51and if they're going to fit.
06:53Oh, a few chew marks on the corners.
06:55Wow!
06:57But fortunately, they've got a carpenter and decorator each
07:01to help bring their homely living spaces to life.
07:04Morning.
07:05Hey, morning, guys.
07:06Morning.
07:06How are you doing?
07:07Very well, yeah?
07:08Are you ready for a pop heart extravaganza?
07:12We're ready.
07:13Yeah?
07:14So, my plan is to turn this one room into, like, a little mini house.
07:17So, we're going to have a front room area, kitchen area,
07:20but there'll also be a front garden.
07:22About 13 years ago, I actually adopted a dog
07:25from Batsy Dogs and Cats Home.
07:27Her name was Purdy, and this is her.
07:30I lost her a couple of years ago,
07:31and so I decided to dedicate this room to Purdy.
07:35So, she'll be here in the room watching over us.
07:39Craig's pop art home will be packed full of clever details,
07:43including a front door that will act as a room divider
07:45and a training tool to get the dogs used to doorbells and posties.
07:50He's adding hand-drawn details and bright colours
07:53to his furniture and walls to achieve a cheery cartoon look.
07:59Oh, this is looking poppy, isn't it?
08:01Right.
08:03Wow.
08:04You can't miss this room.
08:07One of the key points was all about it being durable.
08:10So, that got me thinking about plastic,
08:12and that kind of led me on to pop art.
08:14It's what I like, and it was a challenge.
08:18How am I going to inject the Craig flavour
08:20into a dog training room?
08:22But pop art seemed to be the perfect marriage.
08:26Morning!
08:27And it's not just Craig sticking close to their signature style.
08:31I divided the space into two halves.
08:33So, this half is the dining nook in a cottage in the countryside.
08:38So, then the dogs will be trained around a proper table and chairs.
08:41And the other side is a little, like, backyard.
08:46And I will be doing a mural.
08:48So, the space is for them to relax and play on the other side.
08:51And I would like to have a little stood wall here.
08:54And then part of it, the bottom part, the dogs can still run around.
08:58But that part will have a blackboard just to write things on it.
09:03Do you put on your inspiration board there as dogs can see blue and yellow?
09:07Yeah.
09:07So, this is what dogs can see.
09:09Oh, wow.
09:10I'm excited.
09:11I hope you're excited.
09:12You just got me as a shiwawa for the next day.
09:14I'll just be like, yummy, yummy, yummy, woo-woo-woo-woo-woo.
09:17So, I am going back to my signature style, in a way.
09:21So, I'm using some rustic element, like the dining table, the chairs, a blackboard.
09:26But I'm using colors.
09:27And a big challenge for me to work with colors, because I never really work with bright colors.
09:32So, it's a bit of a balance, this one.
09:35You know, this yellow isn't bad.
09:39That's the start of the mural.
09:40I'm hoping it will give a feeling of relaxed and joyful in the same time.
09:46This is quite settled color.
09:48Maybe I'll surprise everyone.
09:49I'll be the queen of colors soon.
09:52Like the top of a pineapple.
09:56Bradley's also breathing life into his walls with a mural.
09:59This is a good way of achieving that whole illusion of wild grass in a garden.
10:06But his inspiration is from a completely different habitat.
10:10What's the fish?
10:11I don't have a dog, I don't have a cat.
10:13So, I've got a fish.
10:14Still a black.
10:16She's got a little ginger wig.
10:18Is that real?
10:19Yeah.
10:23Never owned a dog.
10:25So, I thought I need as much help as I need.
10:27So, you know, I've rang dog psychologists.
10:31I rang kennels.
10:33I went to pet stores and that.
10:34And so, from that, I did want to bring in the garden scheme into the room.
10:40Because I think dog stuff and outside space.
10:43Still be saying, good job, Daisy.
10:45But he's looking good.
10:46Where's my pond?
10:46I do not feel confident whatsoever.
10:53Bradley's boldly decided to turn his transition room into a garden.
10:58As well as his leafy mural, he's got metal outdoor furniture.
11:02A bespoke ottoman for toy storage.
11:04And his crate is hidden under a planter.
11:07To help give the feeling of the outdoors, he's disguising the central column as a tree.
11:12Hey, Bradley, come look at the tree.
11:15Oh, yeah, let's see.
11:18It's going to sit on there.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Amazing.
11:21Is that what you're thinking?
11:22It's the whole thing?
11:23Yeah, it's perfect.
11:24Yeah.
11:24Is it everything you wanted?
11:26It's even more.
11:30As soon as you walk into the room, all you see is a column.
11:34And I do think it's a bit of an eyesore.
11:36So, turning that into a tree, it's a centre point.
11:39And it's a bit more attractive than a plain column.
11:41If a dog moves at the leg, it's the one, isn't it?
11:44It's the leg test, isn't it?
11:46We don't want that, don't you?
11:49Ooh.
11:50Isn't he cute?
11:51They are cute.
11:52Brian is also hoping to disguise the central pillar.
11:55And you drew them?
11:56Yeah.
11:57That's really cool.
11:58With a personal touch that she hopes will make her room stand out from the pack.
12:03It is little faces of my dogs over the years.
12:07And I've also got Michelle's dog and Sue's dog.
12:09Alan's dog makes a feature.
12:11So, that's going to be my wallpaper on the giant pillar in the middle of the room to just
12:16try and make a thing of it.
12:17How do you feel cutting their heads off, Stephen?
12:19I know, I'm amputating their ears.
12:21I feel very mean.
12:22This is going to be a lovely, like, outside dining experience.
12:29So, this side is very much going to be more the garden.
12:33We've got three large cable drums coming in.
12:36They're going to be, like, more of the play zone for the dogs.
12:39They're going to have some planters secured to them.
12:41So, they're a really good, hefty bit of furniture that dogs can play on.
12:45I feel like if you can't bring a bit of fun to dog week, then when can you bring fun?
12:50That looks really smart.
12:55Whilst Bryony is going for caricatures...
12:57Oh, it's bright, isn't it?
12:59Yeah.
13:01Victoria is going corporate.
13:03In terms of colour, I'm just going with Battersea Blue.
13:05So, that kind of keeps it all in line with their branding.
13:08So, I'm creating a kind of living space, home environment.
13:12What I'm going to do is a kind of photo opportunity wall here.
13:15It is multifunctional because it is a sofa and that's where the dogs will pose, sit and have a wee picture taken there to be popped on the website for adoption to find our forever home.
13:27My design is more practical than luxury.
13:31We have been asked to design a room for a dog.
13:34It doesn't need to look outstandingly luxurious.
13:37It needs to be practical.
13:39While most designers are busy creating home and garden spaces, dogs would recognise...
13:48Oh, I hope Michelle doesn't have a bone to pick with me for these.
13:53Craig's furniture is in a world of its own.
13:56I've got this nice cleanable melamine furniture.
13:59Very basic.
14:00And onto this, I'm going to put all of the edges in black to make it look like a cartoon drawing.
14:06Of course, the problem is, it's a permanent marker equals permanent.
14:10So, I've got to have a little bit of a steady hand.
14:14It's very pop art, which is from the 50s, but it's also quite reminiscent of Keith Haring, who was in the 80s, who did lots of amazing graffiti.
14:22I mean, it turns a boring non-event of a chair into a piece of art.
14:27I could pop that in a gallery, no problem.
14:29And whilst Craig is busy creating cartoon furniture, John is going for something more realistic.
14:37This is my dresser.
14:38I'm going to take it back to Bearwood, paint it, hopefully make it wipe up all of these as clean.
14:43I'm going to put some wheels on it as well, so that we're able to move it around in the room.
14:47It's to help portray that dining room environment in a home, but also we're using this for storage.
14:53My design inspiration comes from my own experience with growing up with dogs.
14:57So, when I was a kid, we had a little dog and it used to nip your toes at the dining table.
15:02So, yeah, I wanted to hopefully create a place where dogs can be trained to fit in with a family in a dining space.
15:09We've got a big round dining table.
15:11I've opted for plastic and metal see-through seats.
15:14So, it's a really limited space in there and actually by having see-through chairs, we're giving that kind of visual cue that the space isn't quite as full as it actually is.
15:23So, I've picked up these modular sofas.
15:26It can be easily wiped down.
15:28I'm going to change the brown to the Battersea Blue.
15:31So, it's a specific paint that sticks to the likes of your PVC windows, so it should be nice and durable.
15:37It's a really, really low height as well, so that'll cater for all dogs.
15:41So, I'm thinking Maui Daphne would be able to jump on that no bother at all and obviously bigger dogs would manage.
15:47My mum and sister used to run a board and kennels business from the family farm.
15:52So, I spent mainly a summer walking dogs, cleaning up after dogs.
15:56I would like to think that that experience helped me for this challenge.
15:59I love my dog as much as I love you.
16:11Oh Alan, I'm so glad we've met.
16:14What with our shared love of biscuits and afternoon naps.
16:17You're like a brother from another mother.
16:19Come on, let's see the designers.
16:21Hello doggies, hello doggies.
16:26Let's hope they've got some good ideas.
16:28Hello kitty boy, hello kitty.
16:31Oh no, this is a right dog's dinner.
16:36Go on Alan, fill your boots.
16:39I'll check on the designers.
16:42Bradley.
16:46Oh hello.
16:47Oh, Bradley.
16:48There he is.
16:50Love the tree.
16:51Is there ever going to be any leaves on it?
16:53Well you can put one up if you want.
16:55Make it summer.
16:57Here?
16:59Around here?
17:00Anywhere where you want.
17:02Go on.
17:03Is that good?
17:04Yeah.
17:05Smashed it.
17:06So you've got a tree.
17:07What else have you got in here?
17:08We've got the whole seating area, so the bench over here.
17:12We've got a bistro set.
17:13A bistro set?
17:14Yeah.
17:15For a dog.
17:16You clearly haven't had a dog before, have you?
17:18A bistro set.
17:19So are you doing any other rooms?
17:21Because these are transitional homes for dogs.
17:23This is giving them a little taste of what their house might be like.
17:27The dog might be like, oh, so I'm never going to go indoors?
17:31I don't know what you're saying.
17:33It is a garden space, but you know, outside seating, outside living.
17:38Alright then, love.
17:39See ya.
17:40Bradley's chosen not to do an inside living space and has just made a garden with a great big tree.
17:46It's all very sweet and lovely, but could it be a bit too convincing?
17:50An excitable dog and a tree.
17:52What's the worst that could happen?
17:54Gosh, that's lovely.
18:07It's not done.
18:09Just needs door handles on it now.
18:11This is my dining table and I didn't like the colour because I thought, I like mermaids, but I don't like a mermaid blue for the legs.
18:20And it's just going to be for those lovely dogs.
18:23We have to train them not to sit on the table because this is for food or work.
18:28But awkward shapes like this, it's taking me forever.
18:33Creating the perfect furniture is no easy feat, especially for Victoria who's busy making a giant dog pool.
18:40So is it going on the wall, yeah?
18:42Yeah, so it's a photo opportunity wall that I'm hoping to create and then we've got these to sit above them as well.
18:48That's lovely.
18:49It's quite a high pressure environment to learn how to upholster.
18:52You've done a good job there.
18:54Don't look too closely.
18:55What about you? What's this?
18:57Yeah, so this is, it was a tyre.
18:59Okay.
19:00Now it's an ottoman.
19:01So we've covered it in roof.
19:02Nice.
19:03And inside there's going to be storage.
19:05Lovely.
19:06Very nice.
19:07And it's a seat as well.
19:08Good.
19:09Yeah, it's sturdy.
19:10Yeah, there's no breaking that, is there?
19:12No.
19:13Nice.
19:14Good luck.
19:16Nearly there.
19:17See you soon.
19:18I've got your spool in the back of the van.
19:19Yes.
19:20It's not just Bradley who's turning trash into treasure.
19:23We've got my cable drum.
19:24It's made its way up here in the van, but now we've got to get it upstairs and actually
19:27into the room.
19:28So we're going in optimistically.
19:31I hear you wanted some muscle power.
19:33Yeah.
19:34But they weren't available.
19:35Yes.
19:36I'll do.
19:37Crikey.
19:38I've got three wooden cable drums and we're going to top them with some astro.
19:42And then there's going to be a dog bed on there and like a big canopy going over it.
19:46So it's like a secluded bed moment for the dogs.
19:49Oh.
19:50Come back a bit.
19:52Oh.
19:53Ready?
19:54Bit more.
19:55Yeah.
19:56Bit more.
19:57Yeah.
19:58It's fitting the door.
19:59It's a good start, isn't it?
20:03Good.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Thank you very much.
20:06It looks good.
20:07I mean, he is big in the room, but he was supposed to be.
20:09It was supposed to be a really big feature of the room.
20:11It's going to work.
20:13Riley.
20:14Hi, Alan.
20:15How are you doing?
20:16All right, thanks.
20:17Can we talk about this colour?
20:19You love it, don't you?
20:23Is it a bit baby pooey?
20:25No, Alan.
20:26It's earthy.
20:28Oh, OK.
20:29So who are these dogs?
20:31Well, I've had six dogs over the years, so some of these are my dogs.
20:34Oh, OK.
20:35And then look who we've got here.
20:37Is this your Bev?
20:38Yeah!
20:39A little Irish set of Bev.
20:40We've got Bev.
20:41We've got Michelle's dog on here.
20:43Oh, yeah, Henry.
20:44We've got Sue's dog.
20:45No!
20:46You are putting our dogs up there to melt our hearts.
20:50You want to be Stand Up's face again.
20:52These things have to be done.
20:53We're halfway through now.
20:54This is serious stuff.
20:55How is Bev?
20:56Still dead.
20:57So this is...
20:59But it's nice to have her, right?
21:01Yeah!
21:02It's nice to see her there, yeah.
21:03Yeah.
21:04Because she's there multiple times.
21:05Yeah, I know, yeah, she's there, yeah.
21:07Me dead dog's there a few times.
21:09Listen, all my dogs are there.
21:11They're dead too.
21:12This is quite a grim column, isn't it?
21:14It's a grim...
21:15It's not actually a column, it's a gravestone.
21:17Yeah.
21:18Yeah, all right.
21:20No, try and be positive, OK?
21:22We shall.
21:23Yeah, we're going to do this.
21:24Between my baby poo walls and my shrine.
21:27I'm going to just leave now.
21:28Thanks, Alan.
21:29I'm going to leave.
21:30You're doing great, just ignore me.
21:31Thank you!
21:34Over at Craig's...
21:36Come in.
21:37Hello!
21:38The door's going into his pop art room.
21:40This is looking smashing.
21:42Just having this little break just changes the whole vibe,
21:45doesn't it, the room?
21:46Yeah, definitely.
21:47Zones it off nicely.
21:48Yeah, it does.
21:49I'm very happy with that.
21:51My favourite little part of my room is my front door.
21:53So I'm hoping that maybe this could be a training tool,
21:56putting things through letterboxes,
21:58and maybe teaching dogs not to shred their owner's bills.
22:01Although they might quite like that to happen.
22:04Hello, hello, hello.
22:05Oh, my goodness!
22:07Look at this!
22:09It is, yeah.
22:10This is insane.
22:11Like, it's like every colour.
22:13Yeah.
22:14Oh, my goodness.
22:15Oh, my goodness.
22:16And a door as well!
22:17A front door!
22:18So this is really, like, completely pop art.
22:21Yeah.
22:22Like, we've gone for it.
22:23It's going to be a full-on cartoon room.
22:24It's such a joyful room.
22:25I love it.
22:27Do you want to come see my furniture?
22:28Yeah, I'd love to.
22:29So this is all my, this is cartoon furniture.
22:33Oh, Craig.
22:35Now I'm worried.
22:36Now I'm, I knew it was going to be amazing.
22:38I knew it was going to be amazing.
22:39But this, yeah, it's blown me away.
22:41Yeah, thank you.
22:42It's a lot.
22:43I hope I haven't gone too far.
22:45Right, I'm going to go run.
22:46I'll catch you later.
22:47All right, mate.
22:48Take care.
22:49There's a lot going on in there.
22:52It'd be really easy, having seen that,
22:54to get in my own head about it
22:56and start thinking,
22:57oh, crikey, it's so different to what I've done.
23:01Then at the end of the day,
23:02Michelle and Sue may love cartoon room.
23:05They may love something more kind of realistic.
23:08Just wait and see.
23:09John's reaction was quite like,
23:10oh, my God, lots of color.
23:12So there's a concern I've gone too far.
23:14But when it's all done, it's all going to come together.
23:17It's all going to be homogenous and work.
23:19And I just have an amazing cartoon dog training room.
23:22Who wouldn't want that?
23:24Day one at Battersea is drawing to a close.
23:27It looks like the drawing I had in my head.
23:28And it's almost time for the designers
23:30to put their paws up for the day.
23:32I'm pleased for how it looks.
23:34I feel good about today.
23:35I'm pushing myself way far out of my comfort zone,
23:38trying to do new things, bring new colors.
23:40Maybe this is ill-placed confidence or happiness.
23:44I don't know.
23:45I'm happy.
23:46I'm surrounded by dogs.
23:47So you can't not be.
23:48It's got quite some bits on there.
23:51The room is feeling fun and playful.
23:53It's a lot of visions.
23:54Tomorrow, the two builds need finishing.
23:56So we've got the dog crate cover.
23:58So that's a big build.
23:59And then the tree needs finishing as well.
24:01So yeah, there's a lot to do.
24:03The designers have just 12 hours left on the clock.
24:20Good luck.
24:21Good luck.
24:22Good luck.
24:23Good luck.
24:24Good luck.
24:25Good luck.
24:26Good luck.
24:27Okay.
24:28Back at it.
24:29We still have a lot to do today.
24:30Let's crack off.
24:31Cheers.
24:32Thanks a lot.
24:33Good luck.
24:34And like them, these transition rooms have many jobs to do.
24:38You have to beat for them.
24:40Like keeping the dogs stimulated to stop them getting bored and frustrated.
24:44So these are the doggy steps.
24:49I wanted something zesty and fun.
24:51And it's just a gentle way of getting them used to those stairs.
24:54But also, if you've got a really, really active and enthusiastic dog
24:58and you're bringing them into that dining area I've created,
25:01you might want to burn off a little bit of energy first
25:03and you can up and over the stairs a few times.
25:05I'm pretty pleased with that.
25:07While John hopes his agility steps will get the dogs exercising...
25:11Oh, look, they're poor plants.
25:13Oh, it smells good, though.
25:16Brian is hoping to get tails wagging with some sensory stimulation.
25:20My plants are pretty crucial.
25:22I've, like, really deliberately chosen plants that are good
25:25for the dogs to, like, truffle around in.
25:27They're all dog-friendly, of course.
25:30I think it's just really important.
25:32If you're going to bring the outside inside in a big way like I'm doing,
25:35turning it into a garden, I wanted it to be real.
25:37I wanted it to be that sensory experience for the dogs.
25:40We don't look cute.
25:41Don't you think, Piers?
25:42That's cute.
25:43That's cute.
25:44Yes, Piers!
25:45This is the scent wall where we're going to have herbs for the dogs to sniff.
25:55Some of the herbs should relax the dogs and let them sniff something different
26:00rather than just playing with toys in here.
26:02And it will be attached to the wall so they cannot knock it down, the dogs.
26:06And it will give them more space to run around rather than having pots everywhere on the floor.
26:10But for Craig, he's hoping to stimulate the eyes with his pop art room.
26:14So I'm adding these black lines to really accentuate the whole cartoon feel for this room.
26:19This is my front garden, so I thought a brick wall for the outside of the house would be perfect.
26:26Craig?
26:27Hello.
26:28Craig?
26:29Hello.
26:30Are you interested in some double glazing?
26:32No, thank you.
26:33You need it.
26:34Look at this.
26:37It's so bold.
26:39It's so brash.
26:40I love it.
26:41Thank you very much.
26:42Why have you put a front door there?
26:43Well, I thought it would be a way they can train dogs not to bite the postman and stuff like that.
26:47Oh, so what will you do? Pop your package from there?
26:49Yeah.
26:50Let me show you.
26:51If you'd like to try my idea, it's a new knockout.
26:53Have a go.
26:54Who am I? The postman?
26:55Yes, very much so.
26:56Okay, coming up then.
26:57Got a delivery for Craig.
27:00Got a delivery.
27:01Ow!
27:05Did you bite me?
27:06What?
27:07Just a little bite.
27:08Just a nibble.
27:10So show us round your crib.
27:12Well, you find yourself in my well-appointed front yard.
27:15Lovely, and you get the sun as well.
27:16Very much the lovely aspect.
27:18Come through to the front room.
27:20The lounge.
27:21Okay.
27:22Oh, I'll take it.
27:26Listen, I love it, and I get it, and it's so vibrant and out there, but would you say you're taking a risk?
27:31Whether the whole colour scheme is going to appeal to Michelle, that's the danger, isn't it?
27:36Yeah, yeah.
27:37All right, well, listen, I'll be off. Lovely to see you.
27:39Bye-bye.
27:40I love your home.
27:42Bye-bye. See you soon.
27:43Have a good day.
27:44Thanks so much.
27:45I'm still here.
27:48One key element of the transition rooms that Michelle has asked for is a space for relaxation.
27:58Well done.
27:59Wee-hee.
28:00Well done.
28:01After all, training is exhausting for our furry friends and they need a space to de-stress and let their new skills sink in.
28:08Relax.
28:09Don't do it.
28:10When you wanna go do it.
28:11When you wanna go do it.
28:12So we have the dining table going over the dog cage, so it gives the dog like a little secluded retreat moment if they should need it.
28:21When you wanna go.
28:23Battersea has provided each designer with a crate which most have chosen to transform.
28:28Do you know what?
28:29It's almost kennel-like, isn't it?
28:30Yeah, it is.
28:31So I've been told the crate is great and I should build something around it to make it like a hidden den.
28:38It's gonna be like a planter on top and the crate will slide in and the dog will feel a bit like cosy and hidden in the planter.
28:47So it's bringing that garden scheme to life.
28:52I'm just trying to turn this into a cartoon kennel.
28:56I've got my biggest fan here.
28:58He's fanning, I'm drawing.
29:00So I think I'm gonna dedicate this to my dog purdy.
29:05Oh, it looks amazing.
29:08Hi, Rita.
29:09Hi, Alan.
29:10Now this is a crate.
29:12And it's becoming a bunk bed.
29:15A bunk bed for the dogs.
29:17Yes.
29:18Aww.
29:19How are you gonna make this crate more appetising for a dog?
29:21Cos my dog did not like a crate.
29:24I put her in the crate and he was like,
29:28And then it was game over.
29:29Yeah.
29:30So the top part is for the dogs that doesn't like to be in the cage.
29:33Yeah.
29:34So hopefully they like to sleep in here.
29:35Oh, it's like a hotel.
29:36Would you like the crate, sir?
29:38Or would you like the bunk bed?
29:40Exactly.
29:41Now, is there a dog in your life?
29:43I've got Chico in my life.
29:44He's like adorable, sexy, clever.
29:47Sexy dog.
29:48Yeah, he is.
29:49There's not enough sexy dogs in the world.
29:51He is.
29:52Yeah.
29:53If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be?
29:56I think I'd be a chihuahua.
29:59You know what I mean?
30:00Get back.
30:01Yeah.
30:02Listen, good luck.
30:03Thank you, Alan.
30:04Love it.
30:05See you soon.
30:06Rita always gives us extra and this week she's pimped a dog crate.
30:11It's well made, of course, but these are transitional rooms for dogs about to move to a home.
30:16The crate has a slide, there's a bunk bed and a fence on the top.
30:20The dog must be thinking, where the hell are they taking me?
30:23This is my little dog canopy that's going to go over the dog bed.
30:29Bryony is hoping to transport her doggies to a world of zen.
30:36They were like that, wouldn't they, Piers?
30:38It's like a doggie spa, you know?
30:40That's very soothing.
30:44Oh, my gosh.
30:46Piers!
30:48It's a playful scheme, it's a fun scheme, it's a calm scheme.
30:51Dogs pick up on human vibes.
30:53So, if a human walks in and they feel a certain way, the dogs are going to pick up on that too.
30:59All the beds are in, but there's no time for snoozing.
31:03I am putting some of the slogans that Battersea uses onto these bones.
31:08Haven't done this before. Terrible time to learn.
31:13Ta-da!
31:14Thank goodness for that.
31:16And that will be suspended from the ceiling.
31:19At the photo wall. One done.
31:21Don't know how many to do.
31:24The blackboard's going up, which I'm really pleased with it.
31:27I wanted to give them the space of what you can have in the backyard and dining space.
31:32So I divided my room into two sections.
31:34I think that part, I'm really pleased with.
31:39With just an hour to go.
31:41May go in a wee bit.
31:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:43Across the pan, yeah.
31:44The designers need to make like a whippet and add the final details to make the dogs feel at home.
31:49The idea is to have an interesting backdrop behind the photo wall.
31:52Just add another layer of something.
31:55Probably the biggest design element of the room.
31:57So, yeah, let's definitely get this finished.
32:00No pop art room is complete without some speech bubble.
32:06My dog was obsessed with tennis balls.
32:09I'm drawing Chico on a chopping board that is going on the wall.
32:12He's going to be so excited when I show him this.
32:15It's been quite handy, actually, having a mum that does dog portraiture.
32:18I get to put up some of her artwork, which is quite a nice thing to do, isn't it?
32:22The portraits.
32:23I've come and painted.
32:24I thought, you know, the dog's a gardener in the gardens.
32:28This room is dedicated to my dog, Purdy.
32:31And now she's on the wall.
32:32We're really on the home straight now.
32:35You haven't got long, come on.
32:39You haven't got long.
32:40Craig!
32:41Craig!
32:43This is amazing!
32:45You must be so pleased.
32:46I am.
32:47Can I take a treat?
32:48I've been ever such a good boy.
33:00Here we go.
33:05Bradley!
33:06You look so cute!
33:07Thanks.
33:08Bad note, your squirrel's dead.
33:31It's a wrap.
33:32Yes!
33:33Well done, guys.
33:34Absolutely brilliant.
33:35You happy?
33:36Yes.
33:37Got it all finished?
33:38Thank you so much.
33:39Oh, Piers.
33:40Come on.
33:41There it is.
33:42That's it.
33:45No, it's all right in here.
33:46It's a comfy.
33:47Yeah.
33:50Done.
33:58I'm glad you brought these guys along, because I think they're going to be a lot more useful than we are today.
34:02I'm an already, can I just say.
34:03Yeah.
34:04It's masterful control.
34:07Fox, Dana, Michelle and TV presenter and dog lover Sue Perkins have arrived at Battersea.
34:14Sue is a champion for animal welfare and an ambassador of Battersea Dogs Home.
34:19So no better person to critique the designs.
34:23These rooms are transition spaces.
34:24That's why they're incredibly important.
34:26The dogs come in sometimes in a state of distress, not particularly well socialised.
34:30So they might find domestic spaces a little bit frightening.
34:32What I'd like to see from these rooms is a welcoming space.
34:35Something where, at all times, the dog's emotional needs are being catered for.
34:40And I would say as a general note, Alsatians cannot stand mid-century designs.
34:45So stay away from that, because as I say, they will react in that environment.
34:49I wanted our designers to give me a space that was relaxing for our dogs, but also stimulating, durable and functional.
34:57So there's a lot they've got to balance.
34:59I wanted to bring the countryside to Battersea.
35:08It looks like a cottage and is relaxing for the dogs and is a good space to train the dogs.
35:16Let's check out Rita's room.
35:18Come on, baby. Let's come on. In we go.
35:20Oh, I love the colourway.
35:22I'm liking big, chunky bits of furniture that can be chewed.
35:26No trip hazards.
35:27They're not going to fall over too easily.
35:29Apart from the actual judges.
35:30I love a blackboard.
35:31My whole downstairs loo is a blackboard, because I used to forget everything.
35:35And only when I was having a weed I think, damn.
35:37Okay, too much information.
35:39What am I doing on here, though?
35:40Am I teaching my dogs to eat?
35:42Yeah, there's an informal class there.
35:44But I like the fact that it means, A, it's zoned, but also it just feels more homely, actually.
35:50But I am wondering then what's going on on the other side.
35:53Is this going to be my sleep zone?
35:55And it is.
35:56Aha.
35:57Doggy bedroom with a little bit of a salt course, which I like.
36:00Everyone loves that before bed.
36:02This is like a double crate, isn't it?
36:04It's quite a steep incline as well, that thing.
36:06I think a dog's going to find it quite hard.
36:08For some of our smaller dogs as well, although she has put the fence around it,
36:11I wonder if that will be enough to stop them trying to do the kamikaze dive off there.
36:16I think what she's done with the walls is really cute.
36:18It is kind of beautiful.
36:20The colours are great and it makes sense for the dog's colour range.
36:23I think we've got a little Sintergarden going on here.
36:25What have you got there?
36:26Is that a bit of...?
36:27That's a bit of rosemary.
36:28We've got basil.
36:29We've got some mint.
36:30Mint, yeah.
36:31I feel like this is a space I'd be very happy to be in as a trainer.
36:34Yeah.
36:35But it's absolutely perfectly functional for our doggos.
36:39It's a really, really good room, this.
36:41I mean, props to Rita.
36:42It's a really fantastic, restful, purposeful, inviting space for trainers and their dogs.
36:50Let's go outside, go outside in the sunshine.
36:56This was my biggest challenge yet.
36:58I didn't really know what a transition space was but I feel like I've got the grasp of it.
37:02My design is a garden scheme and I hope that translates that it is still a domestic environment.
37:09Come on, little mum.
37:10Come on.
37:11Come on.
37:12Right.
37:13Check out this one then.
37:14What do you think here?
37:15What do you think of this one?
37:16I find the colours very nice but of course that's the human eye is registering that these are really lovely,
37:21sort of, simpatico colours.
37:23Whereas for a dog, not much of this is going to register because they see on the blue-yellow spectrum, I think.
37:28I like how graphically he's made the tree using the big circles.
37:32Whether it's dog friendly or not, I don't know.
37:35As is the mural here.
37:37I mean, I'm not sure dogs even see this and if it's got no smell.
37:40I'm not sure that would register as anything other than maybe a shadow.
37:44What I'm enjoying is the sort of crushed squirrel detail.
37:47Yeah, we've got some roadkill.
37:48I don't know what happened to that before we came in the room.
37:51I can't help but thinking we asked for a home environment.
37:54Battersea has lovely outdoor real paddock areas for the dogs to run around and experience a garden.
38:00Did Bradley need to try and replicate one indoors?
38:04I think that's a good point.
38:05It doesn't feel like a domestic space.
38:06The majority of dogs are going to be experiencing the whole thing from down here.
38:10I'm immediately looking at these little foldy chairs and thinking,
38:13oh, you don't want anyone jumping up on those.
38:15This is hazardous, you know.
38:16That falls, it makes a noise and you've created a problem there.
38:19Dogs frightened of chairs.
38:20That would actually hurt if it fell over.
38:22I might sit down, actually.
38:24Oh, that's great.
38:25I might play, look.
38:26This.
38:27Oh, that's amazing.
38:28And this is a tyre, so...
38:29Oh, that's good.
38:30That's brilliant.
38:31That's going to be chew-tastic worthy.
38:33I'd happily have that in my house.
38:34But I think my real issue with this room is over here.
38:37OK.
38:38This is the crate.
38:39OK.
38:40And there's your nice seating area here, but then you've got the dog's sort of bedroom here,
38:44and you're just staring at it.
38:46And some dogs would view that as quite confrontational to be that close to where they're sleeping.
38:51So Bradley's not a dog person.
38:53He has a fish.
38:54It makes sense now because, of course, you can just stare at a fish while it's sleeping,
38:58and it doesn't have a problem when it wakes up.
39:00I'm hungry like the wolf.
39:04I've created a friendly, happy family dining space where you can welcome in your new part of your family.
39:10My worries are that Michelle and Sue may feel it's disjointed that there are two halves that don't tie together.
39:17Yeah, I really don't want to be on the sofa.
39:19I hope that, you know, Michelle and Sue see the intent there.
39:22Oh, OK.
39:23What have you got in here, then?
39:24Nice.
39:25So this is...
39:26Oh, good.
39:27Straight there, the legs cocked.
39:28That's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful work.
39:32There you go.
39:33That's fully drenched now in year-end, which is great.
39:35Oh, look, so I love how they're running round and round John's agility course, but not up it.
39:40But it's quite a big structure to come into.
39:43And I think, again, thinking about the dog, you're coming into a room, you're not sure what's happening.
39:47And suddenly, oh, hang on, it's agility time.
39:50So I'm not sure about that.
39:51I'm not desperately compelled by here, but if I sneak behind here, suddenly we've walked into a whole home.
39:59Massive dresser.
40:00Am I supposed to play on this too?
40:02So I don't quite understand what this is doing.
40:05If it's storage, I suppose, and it's just a big, lumpy bit of furniture, but doggies just going to jump on that, aren't they?
40:11There doesn't seem to be a lot of purpose for the dog here.
40:15Yes.
40:16Because these are not dog toys.
40:18The colourways are lovely, I'm going to say that.
40:20If you're going to go for blues and yellows, which the dog can see, these are really very nice varieties.
40:25I think...
40:26Pretty pictures.
40:27My dog loves a picture wall, to be honest, Michelle.
40:29And also, I'm struggling with this dining area.
40:31That takes up so much space, you've got a reasonable sized dog, medium to large dog.
40:35You're shimmying round the side here to kind of decide...
40:38No, no, Rufus, get down, down, down, I say.
40:41No.
40:42Yes.
40:43This is the first time you've role-played a Mastiff?
40:45You don't have a lot of room here to actually rough and tumble play with them and do all that.
40:49No.
40:50He's replicated home, because we asked for a home environment, but he's not replicated workable, usable, functional home environment to train a dog.
40:59Yeah.
41:00I'm not sure it's hit that brief, if I'm honest.
41:02I've just tried to make this a lovely little sanctuary for the dogs.
41:12Obviously, my cable drum area is large.
41:14To me, it makes sense, but I suppose I don't know how she's going to see that.
41:17It's usable, functional, but it doesn't feel too much when you walk in.
41:21So, hopefully, I've got that right.
41:24Right.
41:25Let's let the experts in first.
41:27There you go.
41:28Done.
41:29That's it.
41:30Well done, darlings.
41:31Well done.
41:32This is honeymoon suite meets obstacle course.
41:35There's a lot going on in here, though, is there?
41:37There is.
41:38It's slightly overwhelming.
41:39In fact, now I've just seen cartoon of a snaffy, so I'm slightly entranced by that and need to just telescope back.
41:45There's a basset for you.
41:47Doggies in there.
41:48There's so many beautiful dogs.
41:49What is that?
41:50What on earth is that breed?
41:52That's quite cute, though, isn't it?
41:54I really like it.
41:55I think it's nice.
41:56It's jolly.
41:57I'm drawn to this because it's very complicated.
42:00The dog has to work to get to its place of rest, which would work for some dogs and not for others, I think.
42:05Come on, darling.
42:06Do you want to go on the ramp?
42:07See if she'll go.
42:08Hey, baby.
42:09Hey, baby.
42:10Do you want to come up here?
42:11Not interested.
42:12Actually, we're assuming that a dog would very neatly go up the ramp, jump from one toadstall to the next, sit on here beautifully.
42:19But most dogs are just going to leap off and somehow...
42:22Onto a floor that's laminate.
42:23But I like that we've got real plants in here, so the doggies have got something really good to sniff.
42:28Yes.
42:29So these plants are all safe for dogs, and that's great.
42:31What I do like about this, actually, is that there's something nice about the dog feeling protected at the back, so they're not too exposed.
42:37I do like that.
42:38There's a good little photo op there, isn't it?
42:40I mean, that's where our little doggie's going to do its selfie.
42:42You know, there's some lovely things being used here, it's just whether we could possibly have dived into a little bit more of what would be really supremely dog friendly.
42:52I'm struggling a little bit to know if that balance is right between what the dogs need and what the humans need.
42:58For me, it's like the workable area for a dog is the crate over there.
43:02And we've just seen our judges not want to engage with any of the platforms that are specifically for them.
43:09They've actually just eaten some grass and done a weave.
43:13I'd like to think that Battersea sees it as being on brand, and I really hope it translates that I've really designed for the dog in this scenario rather than the human eye.
43:29It's all about practicality, it's all about the dogs, and it's all about finding them their forever homes.
43:34Come on, guys.
43:35You, you.
43:36You're judging commands.
43:37Come on.
43:38There we go.
43:39Hello.
43:40I'm excited too.
43:42I'm going to give full marks for, again, thought about the colour palette for the dogs, so the blues and the yellows.
43:46There's a purity of the blue and the white, the Battersea colours.
43:49Here are some of the taglines for some of the campaigns that we've done to bring the general public into the Battersea vibe, so that's great.
43:57It's on brand.
43:59It's, dare I say it, a little bit corporate, but it arguably absolutely works because we just saw our little canine judges absolutely romp around this place.
44:10Yeah.
44:11They're actually really enjoying it.
44:12They've jumped onto the sofas because those are all a little bit lower as well.
44:15Yeah.
44:16So we know it's a nice, soft, squidgy, easily accessible space for the dogs.
44:19So we've got what I asked for, which is practical, durable, relaxing.
44:24Hose downable.
44:25Hose downable.
44:26It's got all of that.
44:27Take on me.
44:32Take on me.
44:33I'm pleased with the whole vibe of that room.
44:36It feels almost otherworldly.
44:38You feel like you're walking into a cartoon.
44:39It's really fun.
44:41I've gone 100% cray.
44:43It felt great for me and I really, really enjoyed it.
44:46I just hope that joy translates and that they see that.
44:49Come on.
44:50In we come.
44:51Yeah.
44:52Oh, you're good.
44:53Oh, this is spectacular.
44:55They walked into a cartoon.
44:57I love it.
44:58It's really good fun.
44:59I love a bit of pop art and this is just lovely.
45:02But also we've got real things that the doggies can play with.
45:06Yes.
45:07Is this Craig's dog here?
45:08Craig adopted a dog actually from Battersea.
45:11Sadly, it's passed now, but the room is an ode to Purdy.
45:15Oh, I do think that is super clever, having a door though,
45:18because that's something you need to practise with, isn't it?
45:21What happens when the bell goes, when you open it, not jumping up,
45:24letters to the letterbox, love that.
45:26Let's have a look.
45:27Let's go through the magic door.
45:29Oh, very nice.
45:30Actually, John, this is so fun.
45:32We're outdoors now.
45:33This is brilliant.
45:34So it's taken one of the ugliest things to have in the house
45:37and he's put a picture roof on it and it's transformed that.
45:41It's fantastic.
45:42Craig has had a lot of fun with this design.
45:44I mean, every surface has been thought about.
45:47And it's zoned again.
45:49You've got how to behave in the lounge,
45:50you've got how to behave when the door goes
45:52and then you've got how to behave at the dinner table.
45:55So table manners.
45:56Yeah.
45:57It's beautifully done.
45:58It makes me happy.
45:59It makes me giggly.
46:00And I want to have that energy because if I have that energy
46:02in this room, the dog's picking up on it.
46:05Exactly.
46:06And that's brilliant.
46:07Well done, Craig.
46:08While Michelle and Sue head off to make their decision,
46:12it's time for the clients and the designers to have a sniff
46:15around the finished rooms.
46:17Who let the dogs out?
46:18Who?
46:19Who?
46:20Who?
46:21Who?
46:22Who?
46:23Who?
46:24Who?
46:25Who?
46:26Who?
46:27Who?
46:28Who?
46:29Who let the dogs out?
46:30Oh.
46:31Look at it.
46:32No way.
46:33Well there's lots going on in here.
46:36That's a big beast, isn't it? Yeah.
46:38Is that effective? She's got a doggy bunk bed.
46:41Do you want Topperbunk?
46:42Not really a fan of a cage, so I think I'll go for Toppunk.
46:45I love how he's done the doghouse,
46:47like an actual doghouse in the garden, with the roof.
46:51It's so clever. Yeah.
46:53Doggy is nothing if he don't have a bone.
46:57All doggy, all your bone, all doggy, all this.
47:00Doggy is nothing if he don't have a bone.
47:04All doggy, all your bone, all doggy, all this.
47:07Ooh. Oh, my word.
47:10This is swanky. This looks good.
47:13I do think Dawn's feels a lot more like a home than mine.
47:16It definitely does feel homely here, doesn't it? Yeah.
47:19This is the photo moment for the dogs.
47:22It's not so good. And it's about to see blue.
47:25Oh. Oh, it's a feast for the eyes, isn't it?
47:28Is that a squirrel? Ooh, hello, bro. Hello.
47:32Who let your dogs out?
47:35Who let your dogs out?
47:37Who let your dogs out?
47:39Who let your dogs out?
47:42The designers are back in Brighton
47:45to find out who will make it through to next week
47:48and who will end up on the sofa.
47:51Oh, here they are. Come on in.
47:55Oh, yeah. Oh.
47:56So, did you enjoy Battersea Dogs Home?
47:59We did, yes. Yes.
48:01Be honest, who came home with a puppy?
48:04Couldn't you just take them all home?
48:06They were all lovely.
48:08Bradley, did that roadkill squirrel ever get up the tree?
48:11I hope so.
48:14And Bryony, did you get any other dead celebrities' dogs
48:17to put on your pet cemetery wallpaper?
48:19It was a nice touch, Alan.
48:21Yeah.
48:22Yeah.
48:24No, it was a lovely touch.
48:25It was a lovely touch.
48:26Brought back so many memories.
48:28Listen, these rooms are going to make a big difference
48:31for those dogs, so well done.
48:33But who stood out from the pack
48:36and who was barking up the wrong tree?
48:39Let's call in Michelle and Sue.
48:42Hi, guys.
48:45Hello.
48:46That was a tough one, wasn't it?
48:47Yes.
48:48Not only did you have to get in the mind of the dog
48:50and create a superbly pet-friendly space,
48:53but also a person-friendly space for the handlers.
48:56I'm really here as a proxy for the real judges.
48:59Dana and Fox, the Pomeranians.
49:01Um, Dana was very clear about what she wanted.
49:05She wanted a very interactive space that was safe.
49:08And Fox wanted to urinate on everything.
49:11And she did.
49:12So she is delighted.
49:15So which of the designers deserves best in show?
49:19Well, my stand-out space this week...
49:26Second week in a row.
49:28Craig, congratulations.
49:30It was so brilliant.
49:32You absolutely nailed.
49:34Fun for the user, but also for the doggies.
49:37But it's so unexpected.
49:39Pop art and pooches are not things
49:40that I would ordinarily put together, but it worked.
49:43No.
49:44I mean, normally you'd associate something like fauvism with dogs.
49:48Thank you very much.
49:51I was scared I went a bit too bonkers, but paid off.
49:55So, who else is going through?
49:57Well, also for balancing that tricky thing between people-friendly
50:02and pooch-perfect, Rita.
50:04Congratulations.
50:08I love this and I love the way it was zoned.
50:10You know, you all had the challenge of that big pillar
50:12in the middle of the room, and I thought you dealt with that brilliantly.
50:15I'd also like to take through to next week, Victoria.
50:18We did feel your space felt a little bit corporate,
50:24but you did nail the brief, so well done.
50:27But that does mean that, John, Bryony and Bradley,
50:30I would like to see you on my sofa.
50:32OK.
50:33Congratulations to everyone else, and we'll see you next week.
50:37Well done, guys.
50:38Well done.
50:42The way you say I'll see you on my sofa
50:43is an incredible high-wire balance
50:45between the stern and the erotic.
50:48You're welcome.
50:49Well done, Craig.
50:51Well done, Craig.
50:53Well done, Craig.
50:54What an experience.
50:56It's an amazing confidence boost
50:58to hear those fabulous words you've worn standout space
51:01two weeks in a row.
51:02I was really worried that I'd just gone a little bit too far.
51:05It was so vastly different from all of the other rooms,
51:08but you've got to push it a little bit.
51:10Good luck on the sofa.
51:13We'll see you on the other side.
51:14Yes.
51:15Good luck.
51:16Bye, guys.
51:17Let's have a link. Come on.
51:18I'll leave you.
51:21I'm not surprised to find myself there.
51:24I'm 100% ready to, you know, fight for my place,
51:26and hopefully they see the potential
51:28to see me through to the next challenge.
51:30I am feeling disappointed about being on the sofa.
51:32I did love what I've done,
51:33but it will be great to get Michelle's feedback.
51:36Yeah, I've done my best, and that's all I can do.
51:39I would love to take on the next challenge.
51:41I'm not ready to go home just yet.
51:43I just want to be designing.
51:45Hello.
51:49Hi, guys.
51:50Hello, hello.
51:53Don, if we start with you.
51:54Yes.
51:55We felt that you really went down the...
51:57I'm creating a home environment.
51:59Yeah.
52:00So we had a whopping big dresser, dining table, chairs.
52:03Yeah.
52:04We couldn't actually get around the chairs.
52:05OK.
52:06I thought if you're bringing this new family member home with you,
52:09it's really important that the dogs learn how to kind of act
52:12around a dining table.
52:13You don't want them kind of leaping up and taking food off the table.
52:15I thought that would be a nice opportunity to kind of train the dogs in that way.
52:19Did we need such a big dining table to do that training?
52:22Probably not to do that, I think.
52:24Or maybe not four chairs, actually, in hindsight.
52:28I'd try to create, initially when you came in, an area where,
52:32if we had a very, very energetic dog in quite a small space,
52:35we'd be able to burn off some energy on the steps.
52:37But coming into that space and immediately being greeted by,
52:40you know, a small flight of steps...
52:42Possibly quite intimidating for a dog going into that space.
52:45OK.
52:46Because from their height, it would look like a wall
52:48or a semi-permanent structure that they'd have to sort of jump over
52:51or get round.
52:52And some of those dogs are skittish.
52:55I mean, I had designed it in such a way that every item in there
52:58could be moved and reconfigured within that space.
53:01So the dresser's on wheels, which lock down
53:03and allow you to move it to another location.
53:05The stairs are on wheels.
53:06OK.
53:07So you could swap those round if you wanted.
53:08I think it's a very good idea to have portable furniture
53:10in a space like that.
53:12Bryony, tell me a little bit more about yours,
53:14because I really read that space as one of your spaces.
53:17It had all your hallmarks.
53:19We had the wicker, we had your natural materials.
53:21But how appropriate, really, do you think it was for a dog?
53:24Because our little test judge dogs,
53:26they weren't going on any of those ramps.
53:28What sort of dog did you have in mind?
53:30Well, I've had two Great Danes in my life,
53:32so I feel like I probably lent that way of thinking larger.
53:36I've also had a chihuahua in my life,
53:38so she was quite bold, though,
53:40so she probably would have used the ramps.
53:42So, potentially, I've just made it too personal,
53:44thinking of just my dogs and knowing them so well
53:46and knowing what they would do,
53:48rather than thinking of these dogs
53:50that perhaps would be more intimidated to do things like that.
53:53But I really loved the green space you brought in.
53:57I love the natural foliage.
53:58It was really nice to have all those fresh herbs.
54:01And it made Michelle calm, which is very important in that space.
54:05Because she can get easily riled when she's confined.
54:07I'm so pleased.
54:09Briony and Bradley, you both took a more garden theme.
54:13Yeah.
54:14Clearly Battersea has garden spaces outside.
54:17And so, Bradley, I'm interested to know why you chose a garden space.
54:22Essentially, I wanted to communicate it as potential dog owners
54:27could see that dog in their own garden environment.
54:30So that's where I was thinking it's the best of both worlds.
54:33We did walk in and think, oh, OK, how lovely,
54:35but then it's like, OK, but the dog doesn't understand that.
54:39Sometimes I've felt that more boisterous dogs
54:42could have careered into some of the sharper ends
54:44of some of the things that you put in there.
54:46Yeah, but the furniture was in place to, like, communicate,
54:49like, this is, like, an outside dining area.
54:52But I do see where you're coming from.
54:54From fostering sometimes some rescue dogs
54:56who are not huge fans of direct eye contact,
55:00it's you've got your sofa directly facing where the dog sleeps.
55:03Oh, OK.
55:04So it could be slightly sort of like, are you awake now?
55:07Slight serial killer vibes. OK.
55:10I didn't envy you this one, guys.
55:12And even though you're on the sofa, I think, you know,
55:14I would take elements from every single one of your designs
55:17and make something fabulous.
55:18You know, I think you all had flashes of real inspiration
55:21and real genius, I would say that.
55:23I feel like I'm really starting to get to know you,
55:26which makes it really hard.
55:28The person that I will send home this week...
55:32..is Bradley.
55:40OK, yeah.
55:42There was something that just got a little bit more missed by you...
55:46OK. ..than the others.
55:47I've learned so much. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
55:49Yeah, I really have.
55:50And I really appreciate having the opportunity
55:53to be on, like, this competition, so, yeah.
55:56Bless you.
55:57Go and grip. Come on.
55:58Come on.
55:59Oh, come on.
56:00You've been so much fun.
56:01You've been so much fun.
56:02You've been so much fun.
56:03Well, thank you.
56:04You've been great.
56:05So my love to Silla the Goldfish.
56:07Come on.
56:08Have some middle-aged lady on you.
56:10I'm coming in too.
56:14Well done, darling.
56:18I am feeling gutters.
56:21I would have loved to stay on in the competition,
56:24but the dog's got me.
56:26This is not the end.
56:27This is just the start.
56:28It's going to be a fun ride.
56:30I think I'll stick to our Silla in the fish tank.
56:33I'm really sad Bradley's going.
56:35I just love what he comes up with.
56:38I think he's totally unique and wonderful as a human
56:40and a designer, so, yeah, he's a real loves.
56:43I'm feeling kind of obviously relieved to be through,
56:47but Bradley's just such a lovely person
56:49and that's reflected in the spaces he creates.
56:51I'm super sad to see him go.
56:53Every week Bradley has given me such visual joy,
56:56and this week was no exception.
56:58Loads to look at, but I think I needed a little bit more
57:01on the sensory level just for our dogs.
57:04Next week we're back to designing for humans,
57:08but very fit humans at that.
