00:00April 3, 1975, a date forever edged in Vietnam's collective memory.
00:06The success of the Ho Chi Minh campaign not only brought an end to the division between North and South,
00:13but also concluded a 30-year struggle against colonialism, from French colonial rule to American intervention.
00:22But the journey of freedom started long before.
00:25In 1971, Nguyen Dukzuan was just 20 years old.
00:30He remembers vividly how young people from the cities to the countryside in the north were eager to go fight against the American troops.
00:39They left school and volunteered to join the army.
00:43So he decided to join the reconnaissance unit in the 2nd Army Corps
00:48and was tasked to conduct photographic surveillance for the Department of Intelligence.
00:55We had to secretly penetrate the enemy lines, photograph the bases from all angles,
01:00wide shots of the whole base and close-ups of command posts, communication stations, guard towers, bunkers, artillery, access routes, and wire fences.
01:11Photographing all these things meant getting dangerously close to the targets.
01:15His final mission was to infiltrate the enemy forces at the Kat Lai Naval Base, east of Saigon.
01:29He describes the situation in one word, chaotic.
01:32Artillery fire was heavy and explosions echoed everywhere, only to find that the enemy had left the base.
01:41But everything changed on the morning of April 30, 1975.
01:46As they arrived in Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh, they saw white flags on enemy tanks, a signal of surrender.
01:55There was no more fighting. Soldiers from both sides sat together and chatted.
02:01The enemy soldiers even offered liberation soldiers ruby queen cigarettes.
02:06The atmosphere was festive and the roads were packed with civilians and military vehicles.
02:11Nguyen Fan Hung, a veteran from the political unit, was tasked to secure the very same military base.
02:18However, due to limited transportation across the river, they had to wait until the morning of April 30 to cross.
02:27After the liberation, he worked to neutralize any remaining pockets of resistance and maintain security, and returned to then Saigon.
02:37On this 50th anniversary of Vietnam's liberation, I reflect on how I wasn't in Hanoi at the time.
02:44We were on the battlefield, but when I later saw newspaper reports and TV broadcasts from April 30, 1975, in Hanoi, it brought me great joy.
02:56For us, the soldiers, the joy was intense, but it was different.
03:02We were relieved the war was over, the country unified, and we could go home.
03:07There was some chaos in the early moments.
03:11Some South Vietnamese units surrendered, others still resisted.
03:16But overall, the people were very happy to see the liberation forces.
03:21We were warmly welcomed by the locals, and the Liberation Army behaved with great discipline and respect.
03:28We focused on both civilian relations and consolidating peace.
03:33Today, the younger generation not only learns about the cost of war, but the value of unity.
03:41In ceremonies across the nation, veterans are honored as the living embodiment of resilience.
03:48As reporters are circulating that the U.S. government has instructed its senior diplomats
03:53to refrain from attending public celebrations of Vietnam's Reunification Day,
03:59the country's veterans are unvased by what some see as a blow to Washington's reconciliation efforts.
04:08We were the victors, and they had to withdraw.
04:12The U.S. couldn't stop the revolutionary tide, and they eventually accepted our victory.
04:19If American officials don't want to participate in our celebrations, that's their choice.
04:24What the veterans keep in their heart is the freedom that Vietnam can now breathe.
04:30As one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing economies, with a thriving culture and a young, forward-looking population,
04:38the country has transformed from a battlefield into a beacon of renewal.
04:42WhenumphMusic joins it in zone, they will ensure that the dog is turned into a field to control the matter.
04:49Which brings us to an environment of spice?
