00:00Vancouver police guard the scene of a festive event that turned into a
00:06nightmare. A large crowd had gathered Saturday to celebrate Filipino heritage
00:10in a province where Filipino Canadians are a sizable minority. But police say a
00:1730-year-old local man ended it all by ramming an SUV into the crowd, killing
00:22at least 11 people, injuring more than two dozen, and sending a city into mourning.
00:27The suspect is charged with eight counts of second-degree murder and could face
00:32more charges. Police say this was a solo rampage and that Filipinos were not
00:37deliberately targeted. I am able to say that the person we have in custody does
00:43have a significant history of interactions with police related to
00:48mental health. I can also say with confidence that we do not believe this
00:54was an act of terrorism nor do we believe there are any ongoing threats to our
00:59community. But Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim has still called Saturday the darkest day in
01:04the city's history and shock has spread far beyond the city limits.
01:09Canada is about to go to the polls after an election cycle that so far focused on
01:16Donald Trump's tariffs and his threats of US annexation. Now party leaders face a
01:21last-minute crisis. Prime Minister and Liberal leader Mark Carney reassured a
01:26nation and a community shaken.
01:28And to them and to the many others who were injured, to the Filipino Canadian
01:33community, and to everyone in the broader Lower Mainland, Vancouver, I would like to
01:39offer my deepest condolences and my wishes for strength and compassion in this
01:45tragic time.
01:46His conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre, had words of solidarity with the Filipino community too.
01:52I know many of you are shocked, heartbroken, and saddened by this senseless act of violence and by the innocent and treasured lives that have been lost.
02:06And Anna and I just wanted you all to know that our hearts are with you today.
02:11But with some victims not even yet identified, the raw horror of Saturday's attack still stuns
02:17Filipino Canadians from around Vancouver, used to thinking of their city as a safe place.
02:21I didn't know what to, like, you know, how, what to feel at that time. It's just the kind of stuff that does not happen here. It happens, you know, something like this, you would hear news coming from the states.
02:33There are some notes of hope too.
02:37Well, we're still hopeful that there would be more events, you know, Filipino events, you know, just to be with families and friends and to showcase, as I've said, the tradition of the Philippines.
02:52But for now, a proud community rocked by random violence, and a country not used to such things happening on its soil, are left to mourn.
