Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast react to the Texans trading out of the first round. It's not super satisfying short-term, but what did they get in exchange and what are the good and bad aspects of making the deal?

00:00As we welcome you in on a Friday, a day two, and really here in Houston, it's kind of day one of
00:04the draft. The Texans almost control the draft starting today. Almost control the draft starting
00:13today. They have, they basically set the now number two overall pick in the draft. They
00:18basically got the Derek Stingley selection in the draft. You know, the one mistake I made was not
00:25getting a good night's sleep before the first day of the draft. That was a rookie mistake by me. I
00:29ended up staying late watching, staying up late watching television the night before the first
00:34day of the draft for the Houston Texans. Okay. Uh, boy, man, so much to unpack. There is a lot to
00:40unpack and there's no way we can even get through it in the next four hours. Right. And, uh, and
00:46things are going to be revealed to us as we're discussing all of this on the sum total of it
00:52all. Yeah. At the very least, if you're a dispassionate observer, if this helps you at all,
00:56if you're smarting from a lack of a first round pick and anything else for whatever it's worth
01:01in terms of all the trade value charts and what not all Casario did make a good deal. They get
01:09the, they get the average, they get an excess value of a late third round pick. Yeah. Should we let,
01:14let's let, cause there may be people waking up that don't know exactly what the details were last
01:18night. That's a great point, Sean. So let's, so, so if you're just, I would never be one of those
01:23people. If you're just waking up, no, you wouldn't. If you're just waking up the Texans,
01:28as you just heard right there, did trade out of the 25th pick into the second round with the
01:33giants. So they are picking second tonight, the 34th overall pick. So there, then you're
01:38right. You nailed it. There's a lot to unpack from this both. What does this mean for the
01:41Texans draft? What, what do people feel like the Texans should have done? What do we think
01:48they tried to do last night? Cause there were some players that Seth, you and I have talked
01:52about and coveted. They got very, very close to the 25th overall pick almost. It would seem
01:57in trade upable land for the Texans. And there was no trade up. There was a trade back. So here
02:03is Adam Schefter last night on ESPN with the details of the deal. The Texans made to move out
02:11of the first round. We said this would be the quarterback range and the New York giants have
02:16just traded back into the first round to pick number 25, which belonged to the Houston, Texas
02:24in return. They're giving up pick 34 pick number 99 and a third round pick in 2026. The giants
02:33at 25 are on the clock. Look for a quarterback here. All right. So, so that that's the deal. So it's a
02:40late third round pick in this draft pick 99. It's a third round. It's probably high in the third
02:50round. And then they move in and they move back nine spots for that. Um, now you said that the,
02:57I haven't looked at any of the Jimmy Johnson charts or I haven't seen any tweets telling me, Seth,
03:02what the points were for each team on that trade. It sounds like you've seen, you've seen that it's,
03:07it came, it's, it's, it's an even trade. Every value at Texans cap posted the various charts and
03:14the technical analysts and everything. And the Texans quote unquote one, all of those, which is
03:20what you should do when a team is drafting up for a quarterback, when a team trades up for a
03:24quarterback, the, a team like the giants will get a little bit of a pass of overspending because
03:28you know, okay, go get your guy. Um, I think there's, there's a perception by a lot of people
03:34that I noticed last night. Cause they said it to me. There's a, Oh man, the Texans got hosed.
03:39Look at what the Rams got on the text page. Yeah. The Rams immediately afterwards have a trade with
03:43the Falcons where the Rams get about the equivalent of a higher third, a high third round pick extra
03:49in the trade. So yeah, the Rams got a really good deal, but the, if you analyze the Texans value,
03:56just, you know, by normal standards, they also got a good deal. So it's like now what we can find
04:04out in the future is whether some of the offensive linemen that got taken immediately afterwards,
04:08like Josh Connerly or Josh Simmons, how good did they end up being versus whoever the Texans draft
04:13if they draft at number 34, that's the, that's the long-term grade on it. Yeah. That that's,
04:18it was really interesting. Cause you're right. The Falcons, the very next pick trade or traded up
04:23with the Rams at 26. The reason why the Texans got fleece compared to that deal is because the Rams
04:29wound up with an extra first round pick next year in the deal. But, but keep in mind, if you look
04:34at that trade, the Rams had to give up an extra third in the deal. Texans didn't have to give up
04:38anything other than the 25th overall pick. The Rams had to give up an extra third. The Falcons were,
04:43were moving further or the Rams. I'm sorry. We're moving further down the board. The Texans only moved
04:48back nine spots. Yeah. If the Texans had moved back and stayed in the first round with a team,
04:53then I don't think people would be complaining. I think a lot of it is that, I mean,
04:57there'd be people complaining. Don't get me wrong. I do think a lot of it with,
05:01with the Texans this morning is the optics of not, of coming away, of sitting here on Friday
05:05morning and they don't have a guy, you know, like we're, you know, they had moved back to 32 and
05:09drafted somebody and we have something to sink our teeth into. Then I think that it, it, that the
05:15feelings of the Texans moving back and not picking anybody, you know, are probably minimized there.
05:20The other part of it too, is that a lot of the name brand guys and the guys that have been
05:24discussed most, those guys, none of those guys are on a jet on their way to Houston right now.
05:29Right. Right. That's a, that's a big, none of those guys with a, or very few of the guys with
05:34a name brand appeal are on their way to Houston right now in the positions of need for the Texans.
05:38And so I'm not, listen, I'm not judging anybody for being upset or feeling disgruntled about not
05:45having the fun and enjoyment of a first round prospect prospect right now. The other side of it
05:50though, is on the long-term view of things, this is a smart GM type of move. You did add extra draft
05:57capital. You did, even though the Rams got a much better, the Rams, the Rams really like, at least on
06:04the trade value chart, the Texans won quote unquote, won that trade with the giants. It just wasn't as
06:11extreme as the Rams, but don't look at the Rams trade and think, oh wow, the Texans really screwed
06:16it up. It's just, they, they both got good deals. That would be my question would be, were you
06:20talking to the Rams? Right. I'm sorry. Were you talking to the Falcons who traded up with the
06:24Rams? Yeah. Were you talking with the Falcons in a vacuum? This trade, as you point out, Seth,
06:29in a vacuum, this trade makes sense. The math works on the trade. My biggest disappointment with this
06:34and Nick Casario explain, we'll hear from Nick in the next segment. There's just so much to unpack
06:38here. My biggest disappointment is I wanted Matthew golden and he wound up within what appears to be
06:43shouting distance for the Texans. The tease of Matthew golden looking like he was starting to
06:49slip a little and Mike, you know, pass through some teams that might not be looking for a wide
06:54receiver. That was probably the hardest thing. I mean, the, the biggest, the biggest kick to the
06:59gut for me was Tyler Booker going to the Cowboys. Yeah, that was so Tyler Booker and you know, the
07:06Cowboys, remember as much as a Cowboys are a clown show of a franchise right now, they draft really well.
07:11They draft very, very well. That's why they've been able to be competitive as long as they have,
07:15despite Jerry Jones being a buffoon. It's why they have so many issues with giving players second
07:21contracts is because they have so many players that they have to give second contracts to because
07:25they draft really well. You know, kick to their coverage when it comes to things. It's like they're
07:31married to a hot wife, but they're not worthy of her. Yeah. Yeah. They, uh, they, they draft really
07:37well. And Tyler Booker, Tyler Booker is the cautionary tale of people who love to say,
07:42he'll, he'll, he'll, he won't. He'll be a booker, a Mecca book. A lot of these guys are like,
07:49of course he'll be there at 25. Not so fast. No, no, they're not. And, and I've, I count seven guys,
07:56Seth, that flew off the board in front of the Texans, a couple of them directly in front of the
08:01Texans at 25, where the, these were all guys that we discussed intensely on this show for three
08:07months. And it was like, it almost felt like watching the draft. It was a review of every
08:11player you and I have talked about in the mock draft injection. Like there were, by the time
08:15Donovan Jackson was taken with the 24th pick, you really weren't left with any guys that we discussed
08:21with any sort of zest or intensity. Like Banks goes off, Kelvin Banks goes off at nine. We expected
08:27that Tyler Berker at 12th. Totally agree with you. Kick in the junk. That was the one you hoped
08:31would slip to 25. Really? Right. Kenneth Grant going at 13. You, I credit you, man. You were all
08:37over Kenneth Grant throughout this draft process. And he goes at 13 to Anthony Weaver in the Miami
08:41Dolphins. I was, but I, you know, you know what, man, I got to grow a pair because I let the consensus
08:46opinion beat me down because I, I'm like, I'm watching Kenneth Grant and I'm like, dude, I don't like
08:53big guys. Don't move like this. What, what am I missing? Yep. And all I kept seeing was like,
08:57well, you know, when you watch all the games and this, that, the other thing I don't do,
09:01the guy's a freak. Okay. 13th, Kenneth Grant goes off. Gray Zabal goes 18th as was predicted
09:06by a lot of people. Right. Yeah. That wasn't as much of a kick in the junk because that was about
09:10where people expect him to go to Seattle. Umeko Buka going at 19th. That wasn't really a kick in the
09:15junk. That was just surprising that he went before Matthew golden who went, who eventually went 23rd to
09:21the Packers. And then Donovan Jackson, by the time Donovan Jackson went 24th to the Vikings,
09:26Vikings right in fit. I, I, he needs to trade out right now. I think all the guys that he wants
09:31are gone. The only question is how hard did he go after those guys? And I, I got to imagine Seth
09:38that Mr. Trade Up, Nick Casario was working the phones, trying to get some of these. Oh no,
09:43no, he wasn't. He talked about it in his press conference. We'll hear it in the next segment. Yeah.
09:46Yeah. I mean, he was working and that's where another thing people were saying to me is like, well,
09:50Nick failed, Nick couldn't trade up, which of course he could have traded up. It's how much
09:56do you want to give up? You know, he failed to trade up for Calvin Banks. Sure. But I, it suffice
10:03it to say that at the very least, I don't think he looks at Calvin Banks the same way he looked
10:07at Will Anderson. So I think in this draft, it, that part of it is played out and including in
10:12some of those names that went earlier than what the consensus opinion was saying is that there's
10:18just a big blob of draftable players and midway through the first down through the third rounds
10:24and every board is going to be different. So, you know, ultimately you find out over the
10:29course of the next three years, whether these decisions are right for Nick or not. But I
10:34think especially in trading out immediately after Donovan Jackson was taken, the pick ahead
10:40of them, it feels like he, he didn't want to, he didn't want to overdraft somebody. He didn't
10:46have any of the guys. One of the, he's, he does say that one of those guys that they liked
10:51and could have drafted at 25 is still available.
10:53Could you believe he said that? I couldn't believe he said that. I think it was Jonathan
10:57Alexander who asked the question. I, I, I couldn't believe that when I heard that question,
11:01like, well, he's not going to say, and he kind of, it was like a different press conference
11:04version of Nick. He's, he's, he's more than he was in those press conferences. That was
11:09a very different press. We'll hear it in the next segment. The guy who had highest rated
11:13at that point, who is highest on their board was still available. So tonight, if the Texans
11:17do indeed pick at 34, we're going to get to watch and see. I kind of hope two quarterbacks
11:22go. So we'll know for sure that if they have to have a couple of quarterbacks go and then,
11:27and then the Texans pick, we'll know for sure that this is the guy that they had highest.
11:30I think they're picking second tonight. I think they have a second pick. If I'm not mistaken,
11:3334, no, no, no, it's 34. Yeah. I think they picked second tonight. Sean, Sean, basic arithmetic
11:38is difficult for me this morning. That's okay. That's okay. I was like, no, Sean, they're 34.
11:43You had to stay up and watch TV two nights ago, which is three numbers greater than 32.
11:48Yep. So if a quarterback goes number one overall in our first round, if a quarterback goes number
11:54one overall in the Texans version of the first round, then we'll know for sure that at least
12:00in terms of where the Texans board lined up, then it looks like it worked out pretty well
12:05because one of those guys that he had highly rated or was the highest rated on his board
12:08is still there. Still there. Yep. Still, I couldn't believe he said that. All right.
12:11So we'll hear it. What does Nick Casario think of where the Texans are right now? We'll hear
12:14from the Texans GM. There were some big doings in the draft last night too. We'll get to those
12:18in headlines. The text page is all over the place this morning on how they, there's people
12:23that are saying, I, you know, I trust what Nick is doing. There's people saying the Texans
12:27got fleeced. This is fun. We're reacting to last night, the Texans trade out of the first
12:32round and pick up a few third round picks along the way. And we'll kind of take inventory here.
12:37Where are they with all their draft capital right now, both this year. And I think next
12:41year is very interesting as well. You can kind of see, I think you can start to see some
12:47of this since knowing what's on the horizon contract wise for this team. We'll talk about
12:51all that. It is a very, very active Friday here reacting to last night's draft here on
12:56Sports Radio 610. Payne and Pendergast with you.
