Sean Pendergast and Seth Payne react to the Texans' disappointing loss against the Jets from Halloween Night on Thursday Night Football.
Transcript
00:00Like Seth, Seth, Seth says week nine of like, you know what week, this was week nine. You
00:04know what week nine of last season was 470 yards and five touchdowns against the Tampa
00:09Bay Buccaneers. This is by and large the same team that did that last year. I know they
00:15had no Nico yesterday, but that like, this is like overall, like it, let's not act like
00:21last night was this outlier.
00:23Like it's been some version of this way all year long. And the second half issues have
00:28been an issue other than two games. That's been a problem all year. The ability to score
00:33touchdowns in the second half. Don't do it. So what? So in seven of the nine of the nine
00:37games they've played, they haven't scored a single touchdown seven, seven. They've scored
00:41six touchdowns in the second half of games. This season, four of those were scored in
00:46the first Colts game and the Patriots game.
00:49So in the other seven games, they've only scored two touchdowns in the second half.
00:55Oh, you're just cherry picking negative stats. Fine. Yeah, that's clearly, obviously. Yeah.
01:00No, no, no, no, no, no. You're right. I should just keep it simple. They've scored six touchdowns
01:04in nine games in the second half. That's bad enough. Right? Right. I don't need to get
01:10cute. You're exactly right. I don't need to get cute. That's unacceptable that I don't
01:14need to get cute at all. Six touchdowns in the second half of games is a complete abomination
01:19and a pox across the entire offensive coaching staff.
01:22It's hilarious that you're like even on a trick play, a gadget play where you're trying
01:26to help the offensive line out by giving them some gadgetry. Maybe, Hey, maybe if you just
01:31stand in the right spot, this will get blocked up. Right. But Titus Howard and Jack may back
01:39the defensive tackle enough that it disrupts Kendrick Green's pull and he can't get out
01:44the block of San Redick. And Joe Mixon has to throw the ball under duress to a quarterback
01:50who is very well covered by one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. You know, like it
01:56just, yeah, yeah. We'll criticize the trick play because it seems poorly designed and
02:01poorly executed given the people you have on the field.
02:04Oh, it was at a stupid time to do it too. I mean, it's the fourth quarter. This has
02:09got to have a time. Like, this is not, this isn't, this isn't Seth. This isn't midway
02:14through the second quarter where the two teams are kind of feeling, feeling each other out
02:17a little bit still like a boxing match, you know, like they're kind of feeling their way
02:21through it. This is, this is in the fourth quarter of a game where the, all of a sudden
02:27in the second half possessions themselves are at a premium. There were only two possessions
02:31between both teams in the third quarter of this game. That third quarter took like an
02:36actual 25 minutes of lifetime. You know what I mean? That 15 minutes of football went by
02:41like that. It's nine minutes to go in a game on the road that you are trying to steal that
02:46you have not been able to score in. It's 14 to 10. You're down by four. It's not 34
02:51to 30 where all everything's working that day for everybody. And I understand the concept
02:56behind trick play sometimes is look, the conventional stuff's not working. So we got to try something
03:01here, not there and not that, and not with putting CJ Stroud out in a route, get out
03:06of here with that. Like what's CJ going to go up and high point a ball, not to mention
03:11even like, okay, what do we open that man? Maybe you can catch one as somebody crashes
03:16into his ribs and he can make a grab himself that I'm just so disgusted by the, the thought
03:26that somehow you're, you're, you're gonna, you're gonna pull the, what's the name of
03:30those machines that are way too complicated.
03:32You know, where you got like pulleys going and everything. And the, you do the junior
03:37high kids will do it as a product. I forget what they're called. I know what you're talking
03:40to. Somebody texts in seven where you drop, you drop like a, like a, like a, like a pinball
03:45at the top of it here. And it slides down a ramp and goes up as a house of cards. Yeah,
03:51yeah, yeah. A Rube, Rube Berg, something Rube, Rube Berg. Yeah, it's that is that it's what
03:57that is. Me trying to figure out the name of that damn contraption. That's Bobby slow
04:01exactly. Calling that play last night. Exactly right. Put in the Rube Goldberg, put in the
04:05Rube Goldberg.
04:06I'd love to know what that play is called. Cause I got a few, it's a Rube Goldberg. Yeah,
04:10it was, it was the Rube Goldberg, except it was the first, usually when they film those
04:14things for the tick tock, it's like 400 attempts. Oh yeah. Yeah. So we've only got three more
04:19of those Goldberg take 315 action. I actually came up with that on my own eventually without
04:25the help. That's what it is. Rube Goldberg. That's what it's called. Uh, here was CJ Stroud
04:30on the first win of the evening. Nice job. Uh, here was CJ Stroud on the trick play.
04:34Oh yeah. I mean, I thought, you know, we had that played lined up and we thought it was
04:40a good look. Um, and you know, we got to do a better job of selling the run and you
04:44know, making the DB fall asleep. And you know, I got to find a way to maybe go just catch
04:48it. I thought I got held or I'm not a receiver, so I don't know. But, um, you know, I thought
04:53they got a couple of cars that we didn't get, but at the same time, you know, at the end
04:57of the day, man, like I call, he didn't win the game and we got embarrassed. We got kicked
05:02from point A to point Z. So we got a lot of, get a lot of things fixed. Let me, let me
05:06tell you another thing. Let me tell you another thing. Sell the run, sell the run. I'm walking
05:10the play right now. What freaking, I got to watch my language here. I want, I want to
05:14know. I want to know. I'm looking at the blocking right now. I want to know what haphazard idiotic
05:20stupid dullard of a linebacker safety or cornerback is going to fall for the run on this play
05:27where they're clearly, I'm watching the offensive linemen. No, like you take one step and you're
05:32like, Nope, this is not there. This is pass protection. Uh, they're like, they're clearly
05:38bogus. Oh, it's a, you're a genius when it works out. This thing wasn't going to work out.
05:43This was no, this was not going to work out. There was nothing about the design of this
05:47play. The execution of it, just any of it that was conceived in a good spot. The only
05:54explanation is that everybody was drunk last night. Yeah. Uh, are you, I wish that's the
05:58only one I'll accept. No, I wish it turns out we all got drunk before the game. I wish not all of
06:02us. I wish I was drunk last night. Um, D are you saying that there was no inkling at all,
06:08that they were ever going to run on that play or it was a poorly executed, like they, they,
06:12they were trying to sell the run, but it was just a bad sales job.
06:15They're trying to sell the run. And I, I mean, I did like, there's another, I mean,
06:22this defensive line, there's this offensive line never looks like they're out to do
06:26bad things to people or anything. Um, but no, they're notably very passive in this.
06:31And, uh, I, I think maybe you're getting, you know, what you're hoping is that, okay,
06:36they're trying to make it look like Pat run to the outside or something, but no, I think
06:42everybody's eyes immediately. One, one step into this read would have their eyes to the left.
06:48Um, and on any potential receiving threats, who's the other receiving threat? Only CJ
06:53Stroud, CJ Stroud, just CJ. That's it. That's the receiver in sixth grade. Let's really,
06:59let's really put them into a bind, uh, in, in coverage. And what are they going to do? Oh,
07:05no, it's only CJ Stroud out on Ross. The funny thing about the funny thing about that is,
07:09and this is no disrespect to CJ's athletic ability, but he's not even one of those
07:13quarterbacks where his calling card is his pure athleticism. Like Lamar Jackson, the scouts or
07:19the, you know, the pundits were literally saying he should play wide receiver in the NFL before he
07:23came into the league, Anthony Richardson, six foot five or whatever, and can probably jump to
07:28the moon. I can see you throwing a pass to Anthony Richardson or somebody like that. Like CJ Stroud's
07:35magical superpower. At least it was until the last few games when the offensive line has started to
07:40ruin him has been what his right arm can do. Not the ability to go up and catch footballs.
07:45No. And I think that what you're hoping is that DJ read all of a sudden is going to be the dumbest
07:49cornerback on earth and think that, Oh yeah, they're going to run to the weak side of this
07:54formation with the quarterback right here. And I'm not, and I'm going to be too dumb to know
07:59that he's a receiving threat. And yeah, I, I let's let's do people think everybody's as dumb as they
08:06are. They gotta, they gotta man, the bi-week comes this Bobby Sloak ain't it man right now,
08:12Bobby Sloak ain't it. Chris Strauss or the offensive line coach. He ain't it. Nope.
08:17Nothing you can do about the guys. I know that, Hey, their PFF pass protection grades are swell.
08:23Yeah. Go ahead. Are we sure? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Are we sure? Yeah. They're
