Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast discuss what Texans fans are saying is the new draftee in the AFC South that they're most concerned about and assess it themselves.
Transcript
00:00All right, Pender poll for Texan fans.
00:02Seth, hopefully you haven't looked at this yet because I love it when you guess.
00:04Okay.
00:05Which of the new rookies in the AFC South are Texan fans most concerned
00:10with having to face twice a season?
00:12Cam Ward drafted number one overall by the Titans.
00:15Travis Hunter, Jacksonville traded up from five to two to draft him.
00:19And then Tyler Warren drafted 14th overall,
00:23the tight end out of Penn State by the Colts.
00:25All right, this is going to be a tough one.
00:26It's always hard when there's three candidates for me to nail the percentages,
00:29but I think Travis Hunter is going to win it by what amount?
00:34People still remember Vince Young coming in as a rookie with the Titans
00:37and doing a lot of damage,
00:39so maybe some people are going to vote Cam Ward because of that.
00:42I think Travis Hunter wins this getting 73% of the votes.
00:49No, no, you're just fighting a sense a little off on this one.
00:54Tyler Warren is the winner on this one.
00:57Really? Won it?
00:57Tyler Warren, well, he's winning.
00:58It's still open if people want to vote.
01:00I put it up last night.
01:02As of right now, Tyler, it's very close.
01:05Tyler Warren, 42.6%.
01:09Travis Hunter, 4%.
01:12So it's a dead heat between those two.
01:13And then Cam Ward is fairly far back at 16%.
01:16It's pretty funny that the quarterback, I guess that stands to reason.
01:20I mean, there's a better chance that Cam Ward is a bust than these other two guys
01:24just based on the bust factor of highly drafted quarterbacks.
01:28But it sounds like yours would be Travis Hunter just based on what you think
01:33maybe the masses would say.
01:34But what is yours?
01:36Mine is still Travis Hunter.
01:38Now, Cam Ward, with any rookie quarterback who has elite physical traits,
01:43I worry about his ability on any given Sunday to show that those show up.
01:48Anthony Richardson.
01:49I think Anthony Richardson is a horrendous NFL quarterback,
01:53as evidenced by his 50% completion percentage.
01:56And yet we know that on any given Sunday he can absolutely destroy you
02:01because he's capable of great things.
02:03Cam Ward, likewise.
02:05Okay, there's going to be throws that he makes that he shouldn't make.
02:08And he's going to have a game where he has four or five interceptions this year.
02:11But he's also going to have a few games where he just absolutely goes off.
02:15So I get nervous about Cam Ward in that regard.
02:19But I think Travis Hunter.
02:21Travis Hunter just because the potential for him to just put on displays of extreme,
02:29I would say showmanship, but that's not his personality,
02:31just extremely rare athletic ability.
02:34And if he's doing it on both sides of the ball,
02:36it just adds a dynamic to game planning against the Jaguars
02:40that's really, really hard to account for.
02:42Your answer is Travis Hunter.
02:43My answer is Travis Hunter as well.
02:45What's the case?
02:46If you had to make a case for Tyler Warren, who's winning this poll right now,
02:51what was part of it?
02:52Okay.
02:53First, let me explain maybe where some of the psychology is.
02:56I think a lot of people had fantasies in their minds of the Texans
02:59in a surprise move trading up for Tyler Warren or that somehow Tyler Warren would fall to the Texans.
03:05Hey, and when Loveland's the first tight end off the board last night,
03:08you start wondering like, yeah, I don't know.
03:10Maybe there's something good about it.
03:11Maybe Tyler Warren's got like,
03:12maybe he's got issues at home that ultimately drive him down but can be overcome.
03:18You know, you kind of hope they're like, I don't know.
03:20He's got some kind of issue.
03:22So I don't, yeah, I just don't get it just because he's stepping into a horrific situation
03:28and having a quarterback who's either going to be Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones.
03:32And the tight end isn't the guy that's going to absolutely crush you
03:36if the quarterback's incapable of throwing the ball consistently to anybody.
03:41Yeah.
03:41If they turn it, if the Colts have to, if the Colts want to turn this into a dink and dunk offense,
03:46then by all means, let them.
03:47And Tyler, you know, Tyler Warren might break a few big ones here and there,
03:51but I'm not, he's not going to be as much of a menace and a threat on a down by down basis
03:55as, as potentially Travis Hunter or, or Cam Ward.
04:00Plus you got to remember too, that Hunter, if he's playing more wide receiver than defensive back,
04:04he's paired up with another really good young wide receiver.
04:07Brian Thomas Jr.'s name should have come up by now.
04:09You're right.
04:10That situation, that situation is as good as it could possibly be for Trevor Lawrence.
04:15I'm not convinced that Trevor Lawrence is actually a really good NFL quarterback,
04:19but I know, I flat out know that Anthony Richardson isn't.
04:22Yeah.
04:22Some explanations on the text page.
04:25Texans suck at covering tight ends.
04:26That's a text message from Jim Adler, the Texas Hammer Texans.
04:31It's like, well, he's a different texter, but same point.
04:34Texan fans are concerned because Travis Kelsey's given the Texans defense issues,
04:38even at an old age.
04:39Yeah.
04:39So what would Tyler Warren do?
04:41Yeah.
04:41Yeah.
04:41Those are, I mean, they're all good players.
04:43Like they're, they're, I don't think there's not a bad, there's not a bad answer.
04:46I'll tell you what I'm excited about with Travis Hunter,
04:49especially he's going to be used on both sides of the ball.
04:51And it would appear that he's going to, in fact, let's play Ben, if we could,
04:55let's play Gladstone here.
04:57This is Gladstone.
04:57When he was asked about the FM picks mentality with the Rams, where they're just,
05:02they would trade major draft capital to make big moves like he did last night.
05:05I probably got some familiarity with the, uh, them picks, uh, sort of process.
05:12So for our fans, I'll tell you, don't be scared.
05:16This is, uh, something I'm uniquely positioned to navigate.
05:19And, uh, we ended up with Jack, we ended up, we ended up bringing Travis Hunter to Jacksonville.
05:26And with that, uh, he is somebody who is deserving of a first round draft pick as a wide receiver.
05:33And he is worthy of a first round draft pick as a corner.
05:37Uh, certainly look forward, uh, to each of those elements showing themselves, uh, over the next few years
05:44while he's under his rookie contract.
05:46But, uh, yeah, we're excited about just getting him in the boat, so to speak.
05:51Multiple people have reached out to me via text this morning and said,
05:54he sounds stoned the magical Gladstone today, or the magnificent Gladstone.
05:57Oh, yeah, he's got a little bit of that.
06:00Yeah, yeah.
06:01He sounds, Amy texted me, he's like, he sounds like Spicoli from Fast Times at Richmont, Iowa.
06:05I'll tell you what, honestly, the part that I was kind of surprised about where you said that I'm uniquely.
06:11Uniquely, to navigate the situation.
06:14Navigate was the word you're probably trying to think.
06:16He's uniquely qualified to navigate the situation.
06:18Qualified was the word I was looking for.
06:20Yeah, gotcha.
06:20Okay, so uniquely qualified to navigate the situation.
06:23Um, the, that would almost be like if Nick Casario had showed up in, in one of the first moves he made,
06:29that, now, like what, his first draft pick was Davis Mills.
06:32But, okay, what if, if Casario had gotten up and said, like, well, you know, uh, you know, a lot of people scoff at drafting a quarterback in the third round with your first pick.
06:44But, uh, look, I was in the organization that had Tom Brady, who became one of the best quarterbacks of all time.
06:50I think he'd have gotten crushed.
06:50I'm uniquely, I'm uniquely, I am uniquely positioned and qualified to make a pick such as this.
06:56He, he, he, he'd have gotten crushed and I think a lot of it would have been because Jack Easterby was still in the building at that time.
07:02There's there.
07:02Well, plus he wouldn't have said that.
07:03No, no, no.
07:04You know, like he wouldn't, he wouldn't have said, he just, yeah, Jack Easterby was in the building.
07:08But he also, like, Casario tries really hard to not make it about himself.
07:11Yeah.
07:11Um, I, Gladstone was kind of like, Hey, don't worry.
07:14I'm in charge now.
07:15But the re right.
07:16But the reason I bring up that he would get crushed is everybody in Jacksonville seems to
07:19be slapping up everything.
07:21Gladstone is saying, like, I don't think they gave one crap that he's giving.
07:24He's bringing up the Rams last night.
07:26Like they love him there.
07:27Right.
07:27Right.
07:28Yeah.
07:28I don't, I wouldn't look, honestly, it's, I think it was a good move by the Jaguars.
07:32I don't, I don't begrudge them one bit.
07:34It was a bold move for a very unique player and they have a GM who's uniquely qualified to do it.
07:39You and I both liked the Will Anderson trade.
07:41I think if you like the Will Anderson trade, then it's hard to like, it's hard to criticize
07:45the Travis Hunter trade.
07:47They're the same trade almost the, the Will Anderson trade because one of the biggest assets
07:55for Will Anderson was very much about the intangibles and he wasn't the same caliber of unique
08:03physical specimen and football player in college that Travis Hunter was.
08:08Yeah.
08:08So that's where like, man, that's a lot to give up for at the time.
08:12Will Anderson, remember like Will Anderson was very, very raw as a pass rusher.
08:16You and I were having conversations about drafting Tyree Wilson instead of him two days before the
08:20draft.
08:20Because Tyree Wilson did some of the defensive end things with, he had more polished technique
08:26than Will Anderson did.
08:27So there was a lot of, there was still some projection with Will Anderson.
08:31The thing that really put him over the top was all of the intangibles.
08:34And that's something that we as fans can't see and also get tired of hearing about because
08:39every coach is gushing about the intangibles of various guys.
08:42Yep.
