00:00armchair quarterback on a football Friday on the sports grid network what month is this show is this
00:06October November December no it's in the month of April and we are enjoying ourselves because the
00:11NFL draft completed round number one Donnie right side Joe Ranieri breaking it all down which
00:15includes once again Cam Ward number one overall to the Tennessee Titans I don't think it was too
00:20much of a surprise but over the past couple months Joe we saw a lot of movement it was neck and neck
00:26for the number one pick at least the odds market at FanDuel would it be Cam Ward would it be Shador
00:31Sanders we'll get to Shador Sanders in just a few moments but in your eyes why was the race so close
00:36at the end of the season for college football and why was the race over two to three weeks into it
00:42where as a parent Cam Ward was going to be that number one overall pick it's amazing when the the
00:48ebbs and flows of the hype this year was it not with I mean we were talking at certain points over
00:53last year on how Colorado had two of the top three picks in the draft that it was forget about it they
01:01were going to be these two guys were going to be buddies they were going to be in the top five of
01:06the draft and then all of a sudden we stopped hearing about Shador and then Cam Ward throwing
01:11for 500 yards a game and listen Tennessee we all knew Tennessee needs a quarterback and Cam Ward is the
01:18best he's got the best arm strength uh he's got the best playmaking ability uh but the problem with
01:25him is he tries to do too much but that can be coached and so Cam Ward to me was the only option
01:32for Tennessee they some oh we were going to trade out if you need a quarterback and you have the number
01:37one pick in the draft you go get the best quarterback in that draft that's exactly what Tennessee did
01:42exactly and you're right about this because unless you have your franchise guy you know you could pick
01:48another great football player but you know you're not going to win many football games we'll get to
01:51some other teams that were looking for the franchise guy but if you were sold on this no amount of picks
01:55or no amount of players that you would trade up and get that for and say you know what let me opt
01:59out of Cam Ward even though we like them because I can stack up an extra one next year and get a
02:03quarterback you're number one for a reason Joe that means you're a bad franchise and you don't have
02:07a quarterback now it looks like Tennessee's like got my new coach he's got his quarterback let's see if
02:12we can win some football games completely agree with the move and also even when the regular season
02:16ended in college football I always thought Cam Ward was a better quarterback than Shador Sanders
02:20value in the eye of the beholder he goes number one overall now the next question comes up is
02:25we always understand Joe with the draft itself quarterbacks will get overdrafted if you look at
02:30the big boards for teams not position by position Cam Ward certainly wasn't a top five player on the
02:36draft board but he's a quarterback they get graded differently were you surprised last night that we
02:41didn't get more than two quarterbacks drafted in the first round no I had actually bet under two
02:47and a half quarterbacks in the first round because everything listen it's one thing if you're going to
02:52draft a quarterback in the first round especially up in the board let's say before you know in the top 12
02:58picks there is an expectation that that quarterback has to play as far as I'm concerned there's only one
03:05quarterback here that was it is going to be able to go in and start right away and be worthy of that
03:12kind of draft uh you know that draft stock and that was Cam Ward Jackson Dart you know bottom of round one
03:19you can sit him behind you know some uh some experience there and let him get that but who else was there
03:26the big question was Shador and I think leading into the draft last night we all heard Donnie nobody
03:31thought he was worthy of a first round pick except Shador Sanders in his camp which is really
03:38interesting because again like you're talking about like we saw it in the draft what 20 years ago or so
03:43with Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers like okay number one pick neck and neck one goes number one and you saw
03:48the fall but Aaron Rodgers didn't make it out of the first round even got picked by a team that already
03:53had a hall of fame quarterback on the roster whoa the talent's too much here and the slipping is too much
03:57we'll take him here what do you feel though Joe overall as I set the question up for you is
04:01like Shador Sanders fall was it more play on the field is it too much hype coming into the building
04:07and I love the conspiracy theories out there which we talk about so many times is if you get Shador
04:12Sanders as your quarterback and it doesn't work out in your first year the general manager and the coach
04:16are going to get fired because Deion's going to convince that organization he needs to be there with
04:20his kid and take control like why the fall out of the first round for a quarterback of all players
04:25because the intent forget about all the hype and everything else along those lines the intangibles
04:32that we all know make a good a great quarterback or at least a franchise quarterback which is what
04:38you need to be in the first round right if a team is going to draft you with their first pick
04:43then you've got to have some of those intangibles he's not overly big he doesn't have great arm strength
04:51it doesn't you know sometimes his decision making not great he's very accurate but all of those
04:58intangibles the way that the NFL rates quarterbacks isn't a first round quarterback and we've seen guys
05:05have less right intangibles get drafted in the first round Danny dimes uh and how did that work out
05:12uh so i just think in this draft teams were like yes we need a quarterback but the kinds of
05:18quarterbacks that are available are ones that are projects that we can afford to take in the
05:23second or third round outside of cam ward that's it yeah it's a great talking point from last night
05:29because again not watching the back half of the draft you're waking up catching up on some of those
05:32picks the first guy i looked for there was i wonder where shador sanders went and then you see
05:36jackson dart goes to the new york giants which means that they didn't pick shador and maybe somebody was
05:40going to trade up in that 30 31 32 range to still get that quarterback in the first round so good for
05:45you joe opting out where most times quarterbacks again get overdrafted i don't feel that they might
05:49have been overdrafted because we only got two quarterbacks in round number one but the biggest
05:54storyline that we'll set up and certainly talk about into the next segment was how about the
05:58jacksonville jaguars making the move from five all the way up to two to take travis hunter so we'll start
06:05here with this were you surprised that the cleveland browns traded out of two with travis hunter and that
06:10the jaguars were able to get up to two and take travis hunter i listen i think it's smart right
06:16because jacksonville if i'm not mistaken right we've got new coach we have i believe the youngest gm
06:23in the national football league here they're trying to put their stamp on this organization and what
06:28better way than moving up and getting a if you want to go the receiver route which is where i think
06:34he's going to land well then you got to surround your quarterback with weapons and there may be no
06:41better weapon than what they just drafted to go up and get here because he wouldn't have been on the
06:45board at five we all know that so for them to go up and give what they did i think they have a player
06:52they know they can utilize right away and justify the price for moving up three spots to get him here so
06:59he's going to be in jacksonville a long time yeah you know i i it's one of those trades that you look
07:04at and we won't be able to grade it for years in advance but this is why we talk about it the day
07:07after it feels like to me like cleveland actually made the right move and so did the jacksonville
07:12jaguars you got that player the players can believe it in the locker room the fans can absolutely love
07:17and then you got extra draft capital for the cleveland brown love what i see it's the early line and we are
07:22just getting started ah the lightning started early in that draft as we just talked about with travis hunter
07:28number two overall not to the cleveland browns to the jacksonville jaguars who what happened there is
07:33you go back to five for cleveland you pick up an extra first round pick you get mason graham a
07:38defensive tackle understanding the premise for cleveland was we're not sold on a quarterback after
07:43cam ward which is probably there we're not going to overdraft but next year might be a better
07:48quarterback class coming in case in point arch manning could be a franchise guy that they want to
07:52look at they're at the end of the string now with the sean watson here joe so you're saying you know
07:56what next year if we want that extra draft capital we have it now got a great football player and as
08:01we picked up after the break here it's one of those deals where i think travis hunter fits perfectly in
08:06jacksonville you have an identity player can go both ways he could be a lockdown corner at serviceable
08:11wide receiver if not a pro bowl wide receiver if that's where he spends the majority of his time
08:15to help out trevor lawrence and then the cleveland browns on the opposite side get a really good defensive
08:20tackle to go with that strong defensive line and say quarterback's not there this year we're not going to force
08:25it let's get the extra ammo down the line so next year we have multiple first rounders if we want to
08:30then trade up to get our said quarterback i like both sides joe i really do very rarely will we sit
08:37here after round one of the nfl draft and look at a trade and be like you know what smart for both
08:43teams here we know how strapped cleveland is for draft capital because they gave it all away
08:49uh with uh with the move that signed uh deshaun watson there that didn't work out well so what's
08:55the best way in order to because you need picks right you need talent you need picks best way to
09:01do it is move down what three spots and get and gain all the extra picks they did only to get the guy
09:09that cleveland wanted anyway that had on the board uh which helps them so to me it was an absolute win-win
09:16for jacksonville and cleveland and that doesn't happen very often no it certainly doesn't i'll
09:21tell you what doesn't happen very often either joe a top 10 running back here in this day and age
09:25but the resurgence of the running back position based off of last year free agents were hitting
09:31home runs rookies were doing extremely well so the raiders figured we want to jump into that mix
09:36ashton jinty goes number six overall to the las vegas raiders as they get their running back now i have
09:42two ways joe that i look at this because i always have a philosophy if i'm a first round you know
09:48team drafting i want to take the best player on the board regardless of position outside of
09:52quarterback like if you have patrick mahomes and somehow you're number six pick you're not going
09:56to draft a quarterback knowing that that's not going to help you for the next 10 years because
09:59mahomes is going to be there but ashton jinty was the best most talented player at six the raiders
10:05got him but typically that running back is the cherry on top for a team that has his future young
10:10franchise quarterback wide receivers that are ready to learn and away you go is that final piece of
10:15the puzzle which i was looking at the chicago bears saying you know what they think they have
10:18their franchise quarterback they got wide receivers they got talent and now is the time to win over
10:23the next two to three years do you like to pick for the raiders getting ashton jinty and how'd you feel
10:27when you saw they selected him it's funny i love ashton jinty i i mean the kid is he's a phenomenal
10:35person first and foremost there and his story is captivating and he's got a ton of talent he's 5 11
10:432 12 uh and the anytime you put the words barry sanders in the same conversation even though barry
10:52you know got his yardage three games fewer than he did but that's a different story uh the bottom line
10:57is there's talent there and timing to me is everything because if this was five years ago
11:05we wouldn't even be having this he'd still be on the board and we'd be looking at a second or third
11:10round pick why well bijon robinson happened jameer gibbs happened here uh and of course we just watched
11:18uh a pretty good running back out of penn state win uh a uh a super bowl there with the philadelphia
11:24eagles who was the difference maker so you put all that together and now all of a sudden the
11:29running back spot is being valued more as of late bijon's a beast jameer gibbs i worry that a running
11:37back out of the mountain west 5 11 2 12 a six pick you're gonna run this kid three downs uh every drive
11:46like he's gonna be a three down back i mean how long does he last dotty does even make it to that next
11:52contract in the fifth year if you're gonna burn the kid like this that's the only thing i worry about
11:57for him it's such a good topic joe you bring up because when we talk about like great running backs
12:02in the ascension here like again new york giants drafted saquon barkley which was a good pick at the
12:07time but the giants weren't ready to win he goes to philadelphia and they're in the midst of a super
12:11bowl run so what do they do joe hand him the football every time they can get him he stays healthy
12:15and they won a super bowl so your point is correct you're saying well ashton genti getting the ball 275
12:21touches next year for a seven or eight win football team and then doing it again the next
12:25year for a seven or eight win football team and then you might go to the draft or get a young
12:28quarterback and now he's in year number three a lot of touches and you need two more years to groom
12:32that quarterback now it's year five and six he has a thousand total rushes under his belt maybe not
12:37the greatest use of resources but a fun player nonetheless we're going to talk more draft
12:42radio on the sports grid network with the early line we'll be right back
12:45tight ends galore last night a lot of good tight ends in this draft we may have had a surprise early
12:52in the draft in round number one now the chicago bears sitting there at the 10 spot saying you know
12:56what we'll take the best player available on the board and we'd love to have a tight end to go with
13:00cole commit and our young franchise quarterback we have a solid running game here the wide receivers
13:04maybe this is the missing piece to the puzzle where this offense can absolutely groove colston
13:09loveland was on the board and so was tyler warren so most people in draft nicks here were saying to
13:15themselves you know what i do think the better tight end for myself and i'm me included was tyler
13:19warren loveland goes number 10 overall to the bears and it's also one of those picks joe that we talk
13:24about i i don't hate the pick for the bears i would have drafted differently but loveland is a really
13:30good tight end your thoughts when the bears went tight end and didn't go with warren what was that
13:35well what that is is ben johnson the new head coach of the chicago bears coming out of oh i don't know
13:42a guy like sam laporter who uh i am sure loveland reminding him a lot of and johnson loved uh laporter
13:51in detroit and you know a lot of the plays and a lot of the schemes that he was putting together
13:56for the lions involved a big tight end who can catch and run and i think uh loveland is exactly
14:04that for the bears and it's going to give caleb williams a legit receiving threat
14:10in just about all areas of the field which is exactly what his job was when he was hired
14:16is to make sure that you surround this kid with weapons and give him an opportunity to be able to
14:21succeed and a great tight end will go a long way for a young quarterback and i think they got the
14:27right one no certainly look he's a really good player and again it's another one of the things
14:31where i would have drafted differently but i'm not looking at the bears as like losers of the draft
14:35because they didn't get warren loveland was really good for michigan and basically really good in an
14:39offense that didn't have a great trigger man there that was like hey you know what i'm just going to
14:43light up the feel like cam ward is getting me the football every single play we'll see how it
14:47translates but caleb williams got to be certainly a happy guy today getting another tight end weapon
14:52here that he can use cole comet and also now taking a look at you know your new tight end coming in with
14:56loveland i like the move overall at this point you know that's what i liked because we talk about like the
15:00splash picks and the splash plays the atlanta falcons always had a issue last year with rushing
15:05the quarterback and sometimes you can overreach and say we gotta fix it in this draft no matter what
15:10happens even if the player we feel isn't that good we just need an outside pass rusher or a defensive
15:15end to get the job done i love what atlanta did they got two premier pass rushers in this draft in
15:21round number one that they did give up a little bit of future draft capital but if you're raheem
15:25morris and say i gotta fix this defense first i think i have enough weapons on offense to get busy
15:29and my franchise quarterback i like what the falcons did doubled up in the first round on
15:34edge rushers well and jalen walker at 15 might have been usually you don't you don't talk about
15:41value at 15 here but this kid jalen walker uh the comparison is micah parsons and kind of very similar
15:50to the role michael uh micah parsons does he can rush from the outside he can play linebacker
15:56uh a ridiculous athlete he was the butkus uh award winner right as the nation's best linebacker
16:02but he's also in the nfl with the speed that he has you know they can stick him out on end he is
16:10exactly the kind of player that atlanta needs on the defense to build around uh the kid is going to
16:16be an absolute beast i'd love the pick and the fact that he was available at 15 kudos uh to the
16:22atlanta falcons for making the move and grabbing him solid moves there if you need to improve their
16:27defense they certainly did that and how do you do it best here yes you could take a safety you could
16:30take a quarterback getting to the quarterback is king and they got two guys that certainly they
16:34expect to do that we look at the green bay packers by the way too because they were hosting the draft
16:38yesterday hundreds of thousands of fans in the building and the one thing we always scream
16:43about is boy can they just get their franchise wide receiver to go with their franchise quarterback
16:47a lot of guys in the mix list you're on that offense whether it's watson dobbs or reed but it's
16:51like i need to stand out they get golden you're figuring for the first time in a long time going
16:56wide out round number one they got their guy yeah and the first time since 2002 that the packers
17:03have actually used the first round pick on a wide receiver but again your quarterback is in place
17:10right jordan love uh is the future he's your franchise quarterback and we saw what happened when
17:16christian watson went down right with the acl tear they had nobody to stretch the field they needed
17:22wide receiver help here they already have the uh tight end and tyler craft right and luke musgrave
17:28so they've got those things squared away and now they've got a kid that out of texas that will a lot
17:34of people thought he was outside of uh hunter should have been the first wide receiver off the board but
17:42you i mean the kid has got nothing but speed uh 4.29 40 i believe at the combine he's gonna burn he's
17:50gonna stretch the field for jordan love and for uh for the green bay packers i loved the fact that
17:56they went wide receiver here and bucked the trend there you go pun intended they absolutely loved it
18:02as well and by the way for a draft that we thought was really top heavy right one two and three great and
18:06said you know where these players fit in and again you have the same feeling every draft but it just
18:11feels like you know teams were making the right decisions all the way up and down the draft group
18:15you really didn't get that what the heck kind of pick was that like if i pick winners and losers i
18:19pick the raiders were a loser for picking a superstar running back just i don't think it fits but he's
18:23still a great football player to that football team there was no like oh al davis is picking this guy
18:28could have went in the fifth round but he's a super fast wide receiver that can't catch we draft him
18:32number five overall we didn't get that which is great because teams look like they were making
18:36selective positions here for the teams they excuse me for the players they needed and it's worked out here at
18:40this point other notable draft picks here you know you got tech mcmillan top 10 to the panthers was a
18:46little bit of surprise to go but isn't this what you're supposed to do your young quarterback that
18:50looks like he finally took another step get him another weapon i love that move for the panthers
18:55there and then we take a look at tyler warren who falls to the colts who desperately wanted a tight end
18:59and got for me the best tight end in the draft the bucks go with another wide receiver to help out
19:03baker mayfield that looks like a fun football team and then hampton goes to the chargers you know
19:08harbaugh wants to run the football thunder and lightning now i like so many draft picks joe that
19:13i saw in that first round yeah and listen when you're when you're a team like the jets or carolina
19:19and you need everything you know i mean if you really can't go wrong if you surround your young
19:25quarterback with some weapons here i you know they need so much help on the defensive side of the ball
19:32carolina they could have went defense with the number eight pick like a walker or somebody along those
19:37lines but you know what getting a kid that uh can stretch the field uh and that can grow with
19:43your uh you know bryce young i you can't go wrong kudos to carolina getting it done and same thing
19:49with indy when's the last time indy actually had a legit tight end uh that they could uh that they
19:55could count on so i love the moves you're right donny outside of the giants what was the head scratching
20:00move and even that wasn't that head scratching correct yes no again it's very rare that you go
20:06through or the teams look like they were actually prepared and ready to go and everybody was happy
20:11and nobody was blowing gas it's like i can't believe my team just drafted this guy everything
20:15looked comfortable last night which then brings us up here at the fan blue sportsbook it's never too
20:19early to look at the odds for next season's nfl offensive and defensive rookies of the year if we
20:25start on offense it's no surprise number one overall barring injury cam ward's going to play 17 games
20:30he's going to be throwing the football they're not a great football team which means extra yardage
20:34possible in the second half or latter parts of the fourth quarter he's plus 330 right behind him
20:39ashton jinty plug and play running back there for oak for the vegas raiders he's going to get a lot
20:43of looks there travis hunter tett mcmillan hampton henderson who hasn't been drafted yet at 18 to 1
20:49looking to go early in the second round how do you feel so far about the emerging market here for
20:53offensive rookie of the year well i it's all a matter of touches right and impact and who is going to
21:02you know obviously cam ward is the easy one but how good is tennessee going to be not good news is
21:09they play in a weaker division so they might have an opportunity to shine here a little bit but jinty
21:16we talked about is going to get the touches certainly hunter is going to get enough publicity and
21:21certainly if they opt offense first and work them into the defensive side well then that's uh he's got
21:29to be in that conversation too so a lot still to be determined in these markets though no certainly
21:36as well and take a look at the rookie defensive market a little bit harder to kind of judge but
21:39typically it's who's going to get the most sacks as a rookie so we look there it's abdul carter at a
21:44plus 240 price jalen walker plus 550 mason graham the defensive tackle that went to the cleveland
21:49browns he sits at a plus 750 and again travis hunter which is an interesting one a 10 to 1 if he's
21:54full-time defense joe of course he's going to get a bump but the reason why he's only 10 to 1 is we
21:59don't know if he's going to be full-time defense in jacksonville we'll see it play out
22:03you
22:08you
