00:00I'm not going to kill you. I want you to do me a favor. I want you to tell all your friends about me.
00:04Here's your look at the brand new McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse, the Batman 1989 movie, Batman.
00:30Having witnessed his parents' brutal murder as a child, millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne fights crime in Gotham City disguised as Batman, a costumed hero who strikes fear into the hearts of villains.
00:45But when a deformed madman who calls himself the Joker seizes control of Gotham City's criminal underworld, Batman must face his most ruthless nemesis ever while protecting both his identity and the love interest reporter Vicki Vale.
01:00Lieutenant, is there a six-foot bat in Gotham City? And if so, is he on police payroll? And if so, what's he pulling down? After taxes.
01:07How about, though, before we find out just how much Bats pays in taxes, let's take the tape measure and see how tall the figure stands.
01:12Not the first Michael Keaton Batman we've gotten. Oh, no. We did get one also from the Flash film. Not a great film, but at least we had Michael Keaton Bats in it.
01:19As for how tall the figure stands, let me answer that question right away.
01:22If we count to the tops of the points in his cowl, obviously that's the highest point in the figure, then you're seeing, though, Batman being about seven inches in height.
01:30You can see it for yourself. That works out, though, to be a figure that's about 18 centimeters tall.
01:34To be honest with you, while I did like the idea of Michael Keaton returning into Batman, I didn't honestly like the suit.
01:39Here's what Michael Keaton actually did look like in the Flash film.
01:42It looked very much similar to what he would have been wearing, obviously, in the 89 film or the follow-up sequel in 92,
01:48although there was something really off about it.
01:50It just seemed more rubbery to me.
01:52From the standpoint of how the figures stand next to one another, they seem like they're on almost a similar size.
01:58I mean, if anything, you might just say that this one's just a little bit taller by the way that the ears are sculpted,
02:03but they're very similar styles of builds.
02:05They should be. They're the same actor.
02:06Where does he get those wonderful toys?
02:08Well, we already know the answer to that.
02:10What the figure does also come included with, though, is a trading card.
02:13It's odd that they chose this particular image, more of a black and white bat, as opposed to doing him in color.
02:18Other than maybe just the odd choice of color, I do actually like that they chose this Batman.
02:23They could have also maybe used as well the Batman where he's kind of punching the guy behind him in access to chemicals.
02:29That would have also been an ideal image.
02:31On the back, though, of the card, it does give us, of course, his real name as being Bruce Wayne.
02:34There's a paragraph read that has more to do, honestly, with the 89 film, which, as it should be,
02:39I wouldn't want necessarily just to be a generic read-up of Batman, his backstory, and why his parents got killed.
02:44Having more of it connected to the 89 film makes more sense to me.
02:47I'm going to, of course, put this, though, in my trading card sheet.
02:50The figure does also come included with a display stand that, no, is not going to be going in my trading card sheet.
02:55It has, though, the branding down below of the DC logo.
02:58To the far corner from that, it does also have a peg that can plug into either one of Batman's boots.
03:02Which, funny, though, enough, in the film, they were actually made of custom Air Jordan 6s.
03:07It's one of those weird things that when you go back and look at the film again,
03:09not that you're really looking at Batman's footwear,
03:11but it's kind of funny to think that the prop department and the costume department
03:15would have worked with other existing mediums in order to create the bat suit.
03:19It wasn't just a case that they did it from scratch.
03:21Let's actually move Batman just front and center here,
03:23as we run through the accessories that come included with the figure.
03:26Some things, though, we don't really see too much in the film.
03:28The figure does come included with some bat shurikens.
03:31I don't feel necessarily the need to add bat in front of every single item that we're going to be looking at.
03:35The actual ninja stars do look kind of cool.
03:37I like the way that they've painted gold on both sides,
03:39and the actual individual blades or spikes are all done here in silver.
03:44The figure does have, by the way, though, gripping hands.
03:46He already has them on the ends of his forms.
03:47When, immediately, get them out of the packaging.
03:49So, real no need to swap out hands just yet if you want to have them holding the shurikens.
03:54Moving that off to the side, the figure does also come included with a remote control.
03:57The remote we obviously see when he's being chased by Joker's goons.
04:00He puts up the shields on the Batmobile, and, of course, he also tells the Batmobile to stop.
04:04This would be horribly timed if, obviously, Batman goes to press the button and he says,
04:08stop, and the remote control was dead on batteries.
04:11I wonder if it actually works on just AA batteries.
04:14I mean, obviously, it would be hard to tell.
04:16It's funny, though, that Batman, even for remote control, feels the need to add a Bat logo on that.
04:21Stop.
04:21Oh, wait, it's not stopping.
04:25Batman does also come included with a Batarang.
04:27I couldn't help but, though, notice that the Batarang is awfully thick.
04:31Seems to be a trend, though, when it comes to a lot of these accessories.
04:33You'll see that, also, when we look at the grapple gun.
04:36The Batarang does look like it's actually just a big cake.
04:39It looks like somebody wanted to make a Batarang out of a cake.
04:42It's just a really thick cake.
04:44It does also, again, fit in his hands, although, again, with it being so thick the way it is,
04:48you really have to work a lot harder than you would think to get the Batarang into this hand,
04:53which is dedicated for specifically holding this accessory.
04:56And definitely, giving it the blizzard test, that Batarang ain't going nowhere.
05:00There.
05:01The figure does also mention, as mentioned already, the figure does come included with an awfully thick grapple gun.
05:06It isn't so much thick up top here, but it is pretty thick when it comes to the handle.
05:10Don't worry, though.
05:11The figure does still have a means.
05:13I mean, it does have specifically a hand that has a trigger.
05:15You can take the grapple gun.
05:17Again, you'll probably be making noises while you're doing this.
05:21Getting the grapple gun into his hand.
05:23I mean, it holds, obviously.
05:24It's not, again, going to be going anywhere.
05:26I just feel, though, that they really need to make these handles on not only Batarangs,
05:29but in this case, grapple guns, a whole lot thinner.
05:34The grapple gun hook, by the way, cannot be removed.
05:36It's all made of rubbery plastic.
05:37At least they took the time to paint that all in gold.
05:40Everything else, sort of, I mean, like the remote control and obviously the Batarang,
05:43is just only molded just in the black plastic with that little Bat logo on the remote control.
05:48While we're also on the topic of hands, the figure does come included with a couple of closed fist hands.
05:53I like the look of those.
05:54I mean, obviously, I'm not going to be displaying the figure with closed fists.
05:56Who are we kidding?
05:57But if you did want to, he does have those available.
06:00The figure does also come with a relaxed hand.
06:03Kind of really surprised with all the accessories that he comes included with,
06:06that he doesn't have that Batarang ram that kind of sticks out from his fist.
06:09Remember when, again, he fights the guy in the alley and this thing just projects out
06:12and he basically just knocks the guy flying.
06:15Kind of surprised, though, that they give him a relaxed hand,
06:17but they don't give him the hand that actually has that ejecting piece.
06:20And then, of course, the figure does also come included with a hand
06:22specifically dedicated for holding the Batarang.
06:25I guess, really, you could also take yourself the remote control.
06:27And, yeah, the remote control, don't drop it, whatever you do.
06:29Oh, see, now that I've said that, just take the remote control.
06:32Oh, wedge it in there, wedge it in there.
06:34And you can hold it that way.
06:36Stop.
06:37Keep going, though.
06:38The figure does also come included with the rods that sit inside his cape.
06:42Batman simply just doesn't hold his cape alone.
06:44Oh, no.
06:44I'm not really sure where both these would have actually sit if this was a practical suit.
06:48I mean, Batman has to have these rods in there so he can give that scary winged look.
06:52But outside of that, him running around,
06:54these things would just basically be flopping around inside his legs.
06:58How they work, though, as I flail my finger frantically,
07:01if you look at the design of the cape,
07:03first of all, they're not using a regular material cape.
07:05They wanted to give him something, I'm guessing, that looks more like a rubbery material.
07:09I know in the film they tried to make the cape look like bat wings.
07:12Pretty successful.
07:13Though, trying to do that, though, as a figure,
07:15it results in the figure's cape kind of being really fidgety and hard to kind of work with.
07:21A regular fabric cape, as for an example,
07:23let's just put this guy down here for a second.
07:25This is probably the only time I would really praise the one from the Flash film.
07:28His cape at least was soft enough that it had a natural drape and a natural flow to it.
07:33You can do a little bit more with it.
07:35With this one specifically designed to look like the cape in the film,
07:38again, to try to get this guy to pose,
07:40he doesn't have any wire, by the way, built into the frame of the cape.
07:43It's specifically left relaxed like this,
07:45just for the only sake of adding the little rods.
07:48If not for that, obviously, trying to put this around,
07:50like, you could put him where it's draped around the front of the figure's body.
07:54Just close the curtain before you leave for the day.
07:56You can't really quite pull off that look that he has in the film.
07:59You can kind of just move this a little bit further forward underneath the cowl.
08:03You probably could also even lift the cowl piece right here,
08:06because this would only be the thing that's holding the cape in place.
08:09Lift it up, kind of move the cape back around, and then plank it back down.
08:14But I did notice, though, like the plastic itself,
08:16this material that they're using is a little cumbersome.
08:18It's a little hard to kind of navigate.
08:21Anyways, though, if you did want to take the poles,
08:22all they essentially are, though, is you basically take Batman's hands.
08:26You take these parts.
08:28Obviously, this is the handle.
08:29You're going to want to use that first.
08:30Now, you can either go from the bottom or you can go from the top.
08:33If you, say, for example, want to go from the top,
08:35just basically just attach this into his hand.
08:38Dowel, dowel, dowel.
08:40These might not even be the best hands.
08:42I think they're probably the better ones to go with.
08:44Yeah, just fit them right in place.
08:46It's not the easiest thing, granted, to do.
08:48Do it on one side.
08:49The hand may come off.
08:50It's okay.
08:51You just peg it back in place.
08:53And then from there, you're going to take...
08:55If you look at it, he's actually got himself a little pocket.
08:57Oh, isn't that clever?
08:59I may have actually wanted to...
09:00You know what?
09:00I should really do it the opposite order.
09:02Put it in first, the cape,
09:04because then it's a whole lot easier to slide it into his hand.
09:06Just slide this inside the cape, just like that.
09:09Then go back to Batman's hands.
09:11Oh, boy.
09:12Did this completely out of order.
09:14Plug it back into his hands as best you can.
09:17I mean, obviously, if you had more time...
09:19You have a lot more time to do this than I do.
09:20But you basically just get that into his hand like that.
09:22You can kind of drape the cape around that.
09:24Drape the cape around there.
09:25And then you have Batman doing it that way.
09:28You may also even want to have the rod facing the opposite way.
09:32Because if you have it facing this way, it kind of reveals...
09:34It gives the secret away for the magician and how exactly he does the trick.
09:38Having it on the opposite way, you more see just his hand.
09:41And then you basically see the post underneath.
09:43So don't do really what I've done.
09:44I've just done this quickly just to show you guys how this works with a figure.
09:47But you may want to, though, flip it around and have the pole coming down this way.
09:51Just so that you're really only looking at his hand.
09:53You're not looking at the obnoxious pole.
09:56But at least it gives you the idea.
09:57And then you would just do it on the other side as well.
09:59Who are you?
10:01Well, we all know who he is.
10:02So basically, we just do that on both sides.
10:04Let's get that out of his hand.
10:06We'll come back to that.
10:06We'll revisit that, I promise, when we get to the final looks of the figure.
10:10Get that out of his hand.
10:11By the way, though, also, if you want to look to see how he changes out the hands...
10:15They're not super really hard to do.
10:17Basically, just un-peg it.
10:18Very large peg and easy to work with.
10:20And then let's get ourselves the remote control hand.
10:23And we'll just take that off for right now.
10:25So that is super, super simple to change out the hands for Batman.
10:27Getting a little closer look at the figure.
10:29I'm generally quite happy with it.
10:31Now, we are also getting a Batman Returns line, which I am super excited for.
10:36Though they have already covered Batman and Robin.
10:38And just obviously, they've also done Batman forever.
10:41The one I was really the most excited for to see that McFarlane was going to be doing eventually was the Batman Returns line.
10:46Love the look of Danny DeVito's Penguin.
10:48And it's, for me, my favorite Batman film of all time.
10:52Something to be said also for the 89 film.
10:54But I always really think that the sequel is the superior film.
10:57And I actually just think it's my favorite of all the Bat films.
10:59I mean, even really now what we're getting here with the The Batman movie.
11:02All the way up to the new film.
11:03It's my favorite Batman of all time.
11:06Anyways, going back to the head sculpt, though.
11:08Talking a little bit about Michael Keaton's face.
11:10Does it look like Michael Keaton?
11:12Somewhat.
11:13But I think it looks a little more like him when you see it from the side.
11:16It doesn't look as much like him from the front.
11:18And I think one illusion it loses.
11:21Not having, though, the wider neck.
11:22Because, of course, Michael Keaton had to have the Bat turn.
11:25There's no real way that he could turn his head ever in the cowl.
11:28Obviously, this would have all been one piece.
11:30I know that they would have had to make the neck thinner in order to accommodate articulation.
11:34Because if the neck was wider, you'd never be able to do this.
11:37And you would have to really do the true Bat turn.
11:40But because it is a little thinner, it loses the illusion of having Batman with one cowl piece.
11:45Basically, this would have gone right into the shoulders.
11:47The Bat emblem is on point.
11:49With all the additional points, of course, that the 89 film would have.
11:52Returns would have done away with the little points on either side.
11:55Or only would have just had the point right in the middle.
11:56I actually prefer, really, the Batman Returns Bat emblem a little bit more.
12:01The only other issue I really would have with the figure.
12:03I mean, overall, it does look quite good.
12:05Is that his utility belt isn't quite this color.
12:08They chose to kind of give him a gold.
12:10And in the film, it's more resembling a yellow.
12:12It does certainly look like the Bat, obviously, the Bat utility belt.
12:16There's no real place, obviously, to store any of the accessories that he has.
12:20I mean, that would include either pegs or magnets.
12:23Peg holes would certainly make this unruly.
12:26Adding then magnets would obviously increase the price of the figure.
12:29The torso piece does look, again, very accurate.
12:31The only thing that's missing, though, is that in the movie, you can really kind of see,
12:34especially up close-up shots, that really it's only the front piece that's rubber.
12:38And then he's got a thinner rubber piece.
12:39So allowing some more mobility in his torso.
12:42Down below, of course, we already have ourselves the custom Air Jordans.
12:46Obviously, they added the flaps on the front.
12:48So it didn't look as much like Air Jordans.
12:49It would actually have been funny that they had gone in there and sculpted Air Jordan symbols.
12:53I think even, in fact, they have this Jordans actually symboled on the sides.
12:57Of course, the bottoms of the treads, pretty flat.
13:00At least he does have pegles in the bottoms of his feet.
13:02So if you want to get this guy in some creative enough poses, you can certainly do that as well.
13:06Now for the figure's articulation, going back to, again, his head.
13:09You would never, ever be able to do this in the 89 film.
13:12Batman, however, though, in the figure, can at least rotate his head all the way around.
13:16Head can look up, look down, and you can also move it, rock it back and forth.
13:20The upper torso is going to be also on a very good ball joint.
13:22Same could be said for the ball joint down below in his abdomen.
13:25The arms do rotate all the way around.
13:27The cape at least stays that way, out of the way.
13:30You can bring the arms out at 90 degrees or that T pose.
13:33The figure does have a swivel in the bicep.
13:35You may even, in fact, have to hold the shoulder in order to swivel the bicep.
13:38Double hinge on the elbow.
13:40Hands rotate all the way around.
13:42Legs do split successfully.
13:44The lower half is about the only part of the figure's body that does have everything else is hard plastic.
13:49The lower trunks are about the only thing that is a softer plastic, but at least it conceals the joints behind the scenes.
13:55Of course, Batman does do a splits on his legs.
13:57You can take the legs and move forward, move them back.
14:00A swivel at the top of the thigh.
14:01Double hinge on the knee.
14:03No articulation down below here.
14:05This all continued sculpt of one calf.
14:07There's an ankle pivot, an ankle rocker, and yeah, would you believe, the figure does also have toe articulation as well.
14:12All in all, a really nice looking Batman.
14:15Does it look enough like Michael Keaton?
14:16I think it does.
14:17I mean, obviously, when you're looking at a figure like this, this is a mass retail release figure.
14:21This is the kind of figure you find in stores.
14:23If you're lucky enough, Canadian collectors may not apply.
14:26But to get a Michael Keaton Batman finally from the 89 film, for a while I was kind of really having this Michael Keaton on my shelf as kind of my go-to Batman with the hopes, with the praise, prayers that eventually we would get ourselves one from the original film.
14:39The film for me, at least, the 1989 movie, stands out to me as one of my childhood memories.
14:43Like, I still remember the day that I went in to see the theater.
14:46I mean, back in the day also, too, in the mid to late 80s.
14:50When you went in to see a movie at the theater, a lot of times, too.
14:53And this was also the case when I went to see Gremlins.
14:55Yeah, I'm old enough to see the 84 Gremlins film.
14:58I still remember, though, that walking through the theater, they always had, like, advertisements of merchandise you could also buy.
15:04And back then, back then, they would have had the Kenner 89 Batman figures.
15:08I was still anxious to get myself a Batman.
15:10I eventually did, that had the pull-away utility belt that would snap up, basically would give him, like, a zip line.
15:15As now we get ourselves a fully articulated figure, the only thing I'm really not super crazy with is the way that they handled the cape.
15:23I know that they wanted to try to keep the cape a little closer to that Batwing look that he had in the film.
15:28But it doesn't have the relaxed nature that the one that we get from Flash did have.
15:32And, of course, they also didn't have to incorporate the little pocket areas on either side of the cape.
15:37So, of course, if you wanted to give Batman that scary winged look, you would just basically attach those posts into the actual pockets provided.
15:45Because of that, though, the figure does, unfortunately, have to sacrifice what normally would be, for fabric capes, a wire frame.
15:51It's actually funny, though, I say a wire frame, not even like the Flash Batman had a wire built into his cape.
15:55But if you like more, like, the flexibility of being able to go in there and control the look of the cape,
16:01you may not, though, be able to do that with the 89 Michael Keaton Batman figure.
16:04But it's still a really nice figure if you get the chance to grab one for your collection.
16:08Some may find this look of Batman uneasy.
16:10I mean, obviously, after what happened to Johnny Garbs.
16:12But still, though, the idea that they incorporated pockets on the interior of the cape was a nice touch by McFarlane Toys.
16:18It does, unfortunately, mean that it causes conflict with a generally bulky cape.
16:22But in order to pull off a wingspan like this, it means that the cape does have, when it's just in a relaxed state,
16:28causes it to be bigger, bulkier, and a little more cumbersome.
16:32The sculpting of the face is generally that of Michael Keaton.
16:34I mean, it looks more like Michael Keaton from certain angles.
16:38I mean, certainly we are also beginning ourselves a Batman Returns Michael Keaton.
16:42So it'll be interesting to see if they're going to be using a somewhat similar mold of face
16:45or are going to be tooling a different one altogether.
16:47From head to toe, it does certainly look like Batman, at least the costume that he has in the 89 film.
16:53The utility belt isn't probably the closest thing in resembling color.
16:56It should be more close to the color of what he actually has for the Bat Emblem.
17:00Still finally, though, happy enough to have this guy as part of my collection.
17:03I think it's probably a good time now to retire old man Bruce.
17:06He can go back in the bag with all the other Flash figures.
17:10I haven't had those on display for a while.
17:12What do you guys think of the 1989 Batman?
17:15A pickup or pass?
17:16So let me know what you guys think of it down below in the comment section.
17:19If you guys also did enjoy this video, do it a sol and throw it a like.
17:22You guys want to stick around for more so?
17:23Yeah, I hope so.
17:25While we are wrapping up the review for at least one Batman film character,
17:29there's also going to be another DC Multiverse Batman that's going to be coming your way this week.
17:34Which Batman?
17:34Which film is it going to be?
17:36You guys can let me know what you think.
17:37Down below.
17:38If, again, you guys did want to stick around for more so, and I certainly hope so,
17:41hit that subscribe, turn on that bell, and of course, as always, come back.
17:44As always, thanks for watching, see you guys next time.
