00:00well we may have lost the planet but at least we saved the wardrobe here's a
00:05look at McFarland toys DC multiverse DC classic ambush bug
00:11Erwin Schwab is deeply delusional morally ambiguous and obsessed with
00:31superheroes as ambush bug he sought to join the rarefied society in a body suit
00:35he claims fell to earth from the planet Schwab harassing superheroes including
00:39Superman Batman Wonder Woman and Cobra he displayed the abilities of
00:42teleporting and healing from any injury failing as a villain and faring no
00:46better as a hero he briefly found his niche and measure of stability as bug
00:50superhero field correspondent for channel 52 news he still maintains that
00:55he has cosmic awareness and that reality is merely comic books being read by
00:59extra-dimensional superior beings well at least his sock was spared from the
01:03giant radioactive space spider just before we get a close look stay with me
01:09before we get a close look at the DC classics ambush bug the tape measure is
01:13gonna tell us now I'm only gonna go to the top of his head in theory I should
01:16really go to the top of his antennae at being the tallest point in the figure
01:20but I'm gonna drop it down a bit we're gonna say though that ambush bug stands
01:23more close to about six and three-quarters of an inch in height or
01:25ambush is gonna stand about sixteen and a half centimeters tall yes it does seem
01:31like I've been busy lately looking at DC multiverse figures here on the
01:33channel just bringing in a bunch of them right now just happen to have them off
01:36to the side here's first what ambush bug looks like with the build a figure or
01:39bath if you prefer plastic man the figures that were part of that wave by
01:43the way were energy suits Superman a correction though I did want to make to
01:46the energy blue Superman was that in the review of him I did mention that his
01:49origins was he wanted to improve his IQ and it resulted in splitting his psyche
01:53into the blue and red versions that was actually the classic energy Superman
01:57this version of Superman actually took a different form his body by that point
02:01had become basically essentially energy and he needed to build this containment
02:04suit to contain all that energy henceforth blue energy Superman that
02:09same wave also brought us the harpoon hand Aquaman it did also bring in the
02:12mosaic version of Jon Stewart something also I didn't mention in either one of
02:16those reviews was that both the figures Jon Stewart and Aquaman were the platinum
02:20additions they weren't the regular retail release versions so the regular
02:24of Jon Stewart for example would still have the more classic looking a Green
02:28Lantern symbol here on the front and then for harpoon hand Aquaman the
02:31regular version would have had not the black armor on the sides of his shoulder
02:35it would have had silver instead crap I just may have broke the bike with all
02:38that backpedaling let's look at the accessories though yes please that come
02:41in clear with ambush bug first the figure comes in clear with a trading
02:44card the thing that's interesting about ambush bug if you're not familiar with
02:47the character is he's sort of the DC equivalent of Deadpool self somewhat
02:51self-aware and introducing the audience's kind of the what's going on
02:54around him created by Keith Giffen in 1982 again a lot of inspirations I think
02:59went then to Deadpool and you can really thank ambush bug for a lot of the
03:02character traits that Deadpool has now the feature on the front though is and
03:06we've got source material no figure photography anymore it indicates though
03:10down below it's ambush bug from the DC classics line flip around though to the
03:14back his real name is Erwin Schwab and there is a fairly substantial read so
03:19if you're not as familiar with the character of ambush bug you can pause
03:22and read for yourself that didn't happen by the way did by the way read
03:26this at the beginning of the review yeah I know I did let's move that off to the
03:30side the figure also as well comes included with the display stand the
03:33stand itself I mean what's really different about this display stand
03:37that we haven't already gotten before nothing the answer is nothing the DC
03:41logo is still branded down below you've still got the peg off to the far corner
03:45that can plug into either one of ambush bugs boots or that's feet he's wearing a
03:50suit so I suppose that would still be his boots now the figure does also come
03:54included with what's rather interesting an extra hand not that it's interesting
03:58that he has a hand but it's interesting where that hand happened to be no that's
04:02not leading to a dirty joke the hand was actually part of a separate baggie
04:05inside not the actual tray itself that contained ambush bug but rather it was
04:10actually just next to the trading card well I'm describing all this you guys
04:13saw at the beginning of this video the closed fist though is one possible
04:17option if you did want to remove the hand that he has right now the thing
04:20though removing it though it does do away with one thing he then can't hold
04:24on to cheeks the toy wonder what yes let's put that down for a second the
04:29figure his one other accessory is that he comes in clue with cheeks the toy
04:33wonder it's basically a doll he finds and then later becomes his partner
04:38ridiculous cheeks as you can see is dressed very somewhat similar to sort of
04:43like the flash he's got a big C down below because his name is cheeks he's
04:46got little lightning bolts I guess those would be antennas on the top of
04:49his head he has no articulation he's a doll after all hey I just realized I
04:53rhymed and he does have his hand sort of permanently bent like this because the
04:57idea in mind is that you're supposed to take the hand for ambush bug and you
05:00just take cheeks and just slide his tiny little hand it's like he's walking a
05:04child to the park there we go and you can carry around the doll with him now
05:08based on this and the fact that he does now have a while he has a dynamic hand
05:11this whole time on the other side of his arms there's no way no way at all I've
05:14ever gonna decide to change his hands out for the closed fist if it was to go
05:18on this side that's one thing but to then go on this side and replace the
05:22whole idea of him carrying around his toy wonder his partner why would I do
05:26that I'm just gonna leave it off altogether to show you what it looks
05:30like though if you did want to change out the hands go ahead and just hold on
05:33to his form for dear life whatever you do just gonna wiggle this off remove it
05:37from the post it's pretty easy to do and then just pop on the new hand I mean
05:41that's it's you know it's fine and good but now you're kind of left with this
05:44hand the hand I feel it's just I mean you could technically put cheeks in his
05:48hand that's that sounds wrong you can put cheeks in his hand unfortunately
05:52though I think just with the weight of that that probably would have caused
05:54stress I've already noticed though that with my ambush bug he's a little loose
05:57in the shoulders so really the last thing I would really want to do I mean
06:00he doesn't even have like a gripping hand either so it's not like he could
06:03really hold on the side of cheeks go away you can't even do that so I mean
06:08the only option really is to hold the gripping hand or use the gripping hand
06:11but I can't do that because now I've swapped it out to show all of you let's
06:15just pop that off right now at least we'll put it back on the way it was way
06:18I found it I'm probably just gonna be putting that extra hand I have like a
06:21little loose bag I just kind of put all my extra well that's not 100% true all
06:25the hands I don't know really belong to anything I kind of keep separate on
06:28their own but like characters like this I usually tend to take like the trading
06:31card if I'm not displaying it in my training card sheets the extra display
06:34stand and then all of those accessories and I label the bag anybody care about
06:38that nobody cares at all about that I hopefully you will care a little bit
06:42more about ambush bug it's an interesting looking character one thing
06:46that's unfortunate for for ambush bug I guess fortunate for me I was only really
06:50introduced to the character through buying comics not that I specifically
06:54went on my way to pick up ambush bug comics but just by the virtue of picking
06:58up if you ever gone to like back in the 80s maybe even in 90s as well if you
07:01ever bought like those little bags that sometimes contained four or five comics
07:05you know what I'm talking about right and on the front and on the back it was
07:09always advertised the comics that you were gonna be getting you may pick this
07:12up and think hey that's a Batman comic I don't have I'm gonna pick this up with
07:16the assumption inside that everything else behind it would be all the Batman
07:20comics oh you know what they do they always rope you in that way sure you buy
07:24it with the comic in mind on the outside but everything else inside is what we
07:28consider filler comics those are generally comics that have no value
07:33whatsoever those are generally comics of characters you probably have never
07:36even heard of super pro anybody anyways though the thing about ambush bug is by
07:41virtue of that I was introduced to the character between that and a lot of
07:46times also in the Sears catalog and I'm going I'm no way off tangent here if you
07:49ever had Sears catalog back in the day especially if you're in Canada you could
07:52buy yourself like entire sets like 50 comics just basically advertise it and
07:56they would just have an image just sprawled across well the comics is sort
07:59of spread out in a fan and you can look at that and say oh that's a Superman
08:02comic that's a flash comic that's a Batman comic then ask for it for
08:05Christmas and then of course everything else that was in that stack ambush bug
08:09you probably got like two or three of them inside so by that I was
08:12unfortunately sort of adopted into the idea of then looking at ambush bug and I
08:16gotta say I kind of like the character as a kid growing up he was a little
08:19wild he was a little zany I mean just the fact that he has he has one of his I
08:23don't know if you consider it a partner but he has like an Argyle sock he call
08:27it calls Argyle zany again a lot of inspiration for Deadpool laid a little
08:32bit later on now from the standpoint of a figure I mean if you're looking at him
08:36he's essentially all just a molded green figure there's a lot of possibilities if
08:40you're a customizer for example to get probably several ambush bugs remove the
08:44head obviously and then you basically have just a body to work with the body
08:47is pretty lean and bump in build very similar to like a flash style of body
08:52what's notable though is the way they've sculpted the head sculpt now of course
08:55you on the front you've got the goggles there and I like the way they've added
08:58these little dollops of blue you've got some nice panel lining there in front
09:02kind of gives them a little bit like a faux mustachio and he's got these long
09:06antennae one of the more notable traits of ambush bug is that he has these
09:09antennas on the top these are soft and plastic not that I'd be really worried
09:13but I'm not gonna be bending them all to all too much but they are fairly soft I
09:17don't feel like I I don't think I would have to worry as much that they would be
09:20to potentially breaking stop stop touching or whatever you do the head
09:23skull is generally quite good you got the ears sculpted on inside I like that
09:26they've given him a big expression on his face he's so delusional he's in his
09:30own world painted nicely are the teeth on the top and the bottom you've got a
09:33little bit of a tongue on the inside there as well again it's a nicely
09:36sculpted ambush bug this isn't gonna appeal to everybody but those that grew
09:40up with ambush bug probably really gonna be digging the look at this character
09:42generally though he's all kind of molded here in a very lime green jello plastic
09:46unfortunately again as already mentioned I'm a little not my arms but ambush
09:50bugs arms are a little on the loose side in fact there are actually a couple
09:53things on the figure that were loose the other thing being his ankles I don't
09:57know why they had to be loose really the fact that I just literally took the
10:00figure out about an hour and a half ago from the packaging and yeah he's already
10:03got like loose ankles probably again I don't know if they've used the mold from
10:07another figure from before but if they haven't already this would be a great
10:10mold to use for a future figure release now for the figures articulation ambush
10:15bugs start first with his head is gonna be on a ball joint so it allows the head
10:17to rotate all the way around careful those antenna head looks up about that
10:21high it looks down you can also move it back and forth as well his upper torso
10:26yes is on a ball joint his lower torso yes is also on a ball joint yes he still
10:31has the softer lower trunks some people call them figure diapers they are a
10:34little more on the diaper side of thing you can really see there's a gap but
10:38granted that's only because I'm squeezing the sides stop squeezing the
10:41sides but there's though a gap on the front which is unfortunate because when
10:45you're looking at the figure if you're looking at this way you can even still
10:47see there's a slot right there a little open area maybe that's where he stores
10:51his extra change arms rotate all the way around again it's a little loose on the
10:55shoulders for mine at least the figure does have a swivel in his bicep figure
10:59does have a double hinge on his elbow and the hands rotate all the way around
11:02like split out once again they're on ratcheted joints the legs go forward
11:07easy enough they also go in the back fairly easy to you can swivel at the top
11:11of the thigh the figure does have a double hinge on the knee and then again
11:14you've got your articulation where it counts in the ankle so it moves back
11:17and forth yeah it's still sad it's loose on mine it's loose on this side
11:21too it does have an ankle rocker and the figure does have toe articulation as
11:25well it's one of those deep cuts not everyone's gonna really dig the idea of
11:28getting an ambush bug again I love the idea that they also came included with
11:32cheeks come on put that also in his hand as well you know the thing again about
11:36this is like I don't know honestly what I've wasted the plastic to include a
11:40secondary hand with really giving him only one accessory to work with and that
11:44one accessory just happens to use the same hand that would then be replaced
11:47with an alternate hand just put the figure right there let's move it why why
11:51do we still have this here let's move that out of the way yeah to include a
11:54secondary hand like this even if it was even part of the train the first place
11:57kind of makes you think did they have any plan to include the hand or they
12:01just decide as an afterthought you know let's pack the hand let's put it inside
12:04a little bag and let's stick it on the back of the packaging that's my thought
12:08because if not why would they have not just made a permanent impressant in the
12:11actual clam case where the hand would have been in there that's usually the
12:14case with all these extra hands but still though I don't know if you're
12:17gonna include cheeks and you're all also only gonna have the one gripping hand
12:21it's only gonna allow the figure to hold the doll on one side why waste the
12:25plastic to produce a secondary hand that then would dismiss his one only other
12:28accessory I think if anything they should have then used the plastic
12:32instead and made the plastic available for his argyle sock or dial which I
12:37think would have been a better way to make use of the plastic than giving him
12:39an extra hand it's not that I would say ambush bug is one of those deep-cut
12:43character releases based on a very limited recent comic run this guy when
12:48you think about it's been around since the early 80s but casual collectors
12:51though seeing this guy in the store shelf may pass I'm just not knowing who
12:53he is at all the thing about him though is at least from producing him not that
12:57I produce action figures for a living but I would imagine the costs were kept
13:00pretty low to produce him because they only needed to tool a brand new head
13:03because I think the body's been used before the more I'm looking at it
13:07especially the markings that he has on his shoulders got little triangular
13:10carvings in his shoulders and the back of his body I'm thinking that they
13:13probably pulled this body from the earlier release platinum edition Beast
13:16Boy not the build the figure Beast Boy that was part of the Teen Titans wave
13:19but the one that was sold separately that came in clue with a bird I think
13:23they're probably using the body for that so right away they're already saving the
13:26money's there they're only then having a brand new sculpt a head and of course
13:30dedicate some plastic and some money to produce Cheeks the toy wonder one of the
13:35welcomed included accessories that come in clue with ambush bug granted he
13:38doesn't come in clue with Argyle sock but not that he necessarily needed it I
13:42don't think he really honestly needed to have the closed fist the problem with
13:45including something like that is if you ever decide you want to swap it out with
13:48the hand that he has right now that hand is also there for holding cheeks so
13:52you're literally changing the hand and then you're gonna be the one holding
13:54cheeks in your hand thing what am I gonna do with these cheeks now keep your
13:58dirty answers at the door I unknowingly was introduced to ambush bug as a kid I
14:02was one of those suckers that went to it like I think was a Cole's bookstore
14:06here in Canada remember those baggies of comics that were all sold as a set you'd
14:10get like four or five of them they were advertised with a big red sticker that
14:13would say like five comics $2.99 and you think how could I go wrong advertised on
14:18the front was a Superman comic a lot of times was a Batman on the back and just
14:21as a stupid kid you just assume that all the comics inside were all like either
14:24Batman or Superman boy were we misled between that and then stupidly asking at
14:29Christmas time for those 50 pack comic sets that were advertised in Sears wish
14:33books remember those yeah a lot of times I got a lot of ambush bugs as a result
14:37of that I think if I was to take Italia I probably have still a lot of those
14:40ambush bugs in my in my collection now I have like I don't know 10 or 12 of them
14:45and none of them were bought individually that were always part of
14:48sets I like ambush book for that because I was introduced to a character that out
14:52of I wouldn't have gone out of my way to have bought the comic for but just by
14:56the virtue of being packed along with other things I was introduced to the
14:59character that way probably one of the reasons why I wanted to add this one to
15:02my collection have you ever been a victim of that have you ever bought one
15:06of those comic baggies as a kid thinking stupidly that you would have all like
15:10Batman all top-notch comics inside and a lot of times what did we get lurking
15:14inside was always crap that happened to you let me know down below if also you
15:20guys did enjoy this video why not throw it like hey why not if you guys want to
