00:00MMR's Dreamstream Concert Series, 93.3 WMMR, Everything That Rocks.
00:07Please welcome Seether, ladies and gentlemen.
00:10It's a pleasure to have the guys, Sean, Dale, John, and Brian.
00:15Let's start with Brian, the newest member of the band.
00:19Don't get too close to him because it's like Spinal Tap with guitar players and these guys.
00:23They just... He may actually blow up or meet an untimely death.
00:30Brian, welcome. Glad to have you here, man. Glad to have you here.
00:33So you're no stranger to the band, though. You were guitar tech for many years, right?
00:37Yeah, go ahead and lift the microphone up to the... I know, you're in a band. How do I work this microphone?
00:44We don't let him talk.
00:46I've known guys for some time and then ended up going and tacking for them for three and a half years.
00:53Right.
00:54And now I'm playing.
00:55And then they decided they liked you and they'd be out on stage and let you play. Again, be careful.
00:58Oh, yeah.
00:59Very, very careful.
01:00Stay away from sharp objects.
01:01Sharp objects. Don't walk on ice.
01:02Yeah.
01:03Yeah, no.
01:04Don't do anything.
01:05Don't do anything too crazy.
01:06So welcome to the studio.
01:08The guys are going to play a few songs for us today.
01:10It's going to be a really, really good time.
01:11This is probably, Sean, this is probably a question you've been asked a hundred times and I've seen it.
01:15A hundred times, but you were really influenced as a teenager by Kurt Cobain, by Nirvana, correct?
01:22I don't know where you heard that.
01:24Because it's been all over the place and you've been asked a thousand times.
01:28But it's funny when you think back at how many people he's actually influenced.
01:32You know, every year his birthday rolls around and every year the anniversary of his death rolls around
01:36and you realize just how many people I influenced.
01:38Because myself having no discernible talent with instruments or vocals had to choose the next best thing.
01:46But Nirvana was one of my early influences.
01:48One of the things that really got me into music and really made me want to be a part of this business.
01:53Well, I mean, I liked learning to play guitar to them because it was easy to learn.
01:56Right.
01:57You know, it wasn't very difficult to play their stuff.
01:58So it suited my needs at the time.
02:01And I liked that my parents didn't like what they sounded like.
02:03Right.
02:04Right.
02:05You know, but all those bands from that era were, I mean, I was 13.
02:08Yeah.
02:09Which is just, when you start discovering music and you start stepping away from pop music
02:13and like listening to stuff that you start identifying with on a more emotional level, you know.
02:19So it was Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, all those bands.
02:23And you were a self-taught guitar player?
02:25Yeah, I'm sure you can tell.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Not a lot of shredding going on here.
02:31So tell me about the title to the new record.
02:35I've always found your albums, I've been a fan for many years since you, if you go all the way back to Disclaimer,
02:39I remember like there were the, what were there like 10 to 15 different album covers on the very first record,
02:44which I thought was super cool.
02:46And I've always been a fan.
02:48I think it would have been super cool if they'd actually put the band name anywhere on those covers.
02:52Right, right, right.
02:53Because it was confusing.
02:54Well, there was Disclaimer 2.
02:56Yeah, well, it was this great marketing thing that our old label had
03:01and then they decided that they wouldn't anywhere put the band name.
03:04So you'd go to the record stores and it was like either 10 different albums that looked pretty similar
03:11by different bands called I Hate You and I Hate Myself or whatever.
03:15Right, right.
03:16And there was a little tiny band name on the spine.
03:18So, I mean, I guess it was a cool concept.
03:20It just sort of flopped a little, I think.
03:23But it was cool that we could do it, yeah.
03:25And so the album titles and the album art have always been very interesting.
03:29Tell me about this new one, Isolate and Medicate.
03:32There's not much to it, man.
03:33Is there some hidden meaning there or is that pretty literal?
03:36It's pretty literal.
03:37Yeah?
03:38Since you don't always have to be poetic to get a point across, I guess.
03:41And sometimes just to shoot straight with it from the hip is the best way to do it.
03:45Yeah.
03:46That just seemed the best way to sum up this album, I guess.
03:48So were you isolating and medicating before the album or during the album?
03:51No, there's a whole bunch of deeper meaning in that whole thing, man.
03:53Oh, okay.
03:54No, it was just pretty much.
03:55I was just locking myself away and drinking and writing music, you know?
03:58Right.
03:59So that was...
04:00I mean, I'd like to say there was a whole...
04:02There's a whole lot more below the surface, but it's just an explanation for the process,
04:08I guess.
04:09Right, right.
04:10Well, since...
04:11Well, God, I guess if you go all the way back to Gasoline, you guys have had a string
04:15of number one songs.
04:17A string.
04:18But you're not writing the same song over and over again.
04:20The next one doesn't sound anything like the last one you had.
04:23For example, you know, Gasoline or you had Remedy.
04:26Straight ahead rock songs.
04:27And then you had Fake It, which has got kind of like that swing beat.
04:30And then you had Country Song, which has obviously got some twang to it.
04:33Now you've got like Words as Weapons, which is kind of like that old Tears for Fears kind
04:38of Gary Jules thing.
04:40It's...
04:41But every single song is different and they all shoot straight to number one.
04:44Have you figured out a formula?
04:46Have you got some secrets that you're not sharing with the rest of the world?
04:50Or what is it?
04:51Do you just have a good ear?
04:52You know, when you hear a hit song, it's...
04:53I think if we knew what the formula was, we'd all have Nickelback money.
04:59Nah, we just write songs that we like to hear, man.
05:01And we like to write...
05:02We write songs that we like to play and that we see as being a hole in the genre.
05:07You know, I think a lot of bands sound the same.
05:09So it's annoying that there's a whole bunch of bands coming up now that I can't tell the difference
05:13between them.
05:14Right.
05:15And I mean, I'd love to be able to, but...
05:17And each song sounds like the next and then the next album sounds like the last album.
05:20Everyone's using the same guitars through the same amps with the same effects in the
05:23same studios.
05:24Right.
05:25So how do you become an individual?
05:27How do you get your own sound if everything you're doing sounds the same as everybody else?
05:30And everybody's playing the same guitars on stage and the same rigs.
05:33It's like, well, then you guys are all gonna sound the same.
05:35And it becomes this homogenized mess of mediocrity that I just, you know, prefer not to be
05:40part of.
05:41Well, the advantage to not having Nickelback money is you don't have Nickelback songs either.
05:48I guess.
05:49I don't mind their songs.
05:50I mean, I must be honest.
05:51For what they are, it's...
05:52Well, there is a formula.
05:53They are.
05:54They sold their soul to the devil and something's going on.
05:57They do that well and they get hated universally and paying for it.
06:01And I think it's unfair that they get so much grief about it.
06:04I mean, they never set out to try and be, I think, a serious band.
06:08Right.
06:09I think he's just writing party songs and he's really good at that and so good for him.
06:12And we've done a couple of tours of Nickelback and they're super nice guys.
06:16So I do feel bad for them.
06:18I don't like comparisons between us and them because I don't think we sound similar.
06:21Yeah.
06:22But as far as that goes, I mean, I'll defend those guys till the end because they've been
06:27nothing but good to us.
06:28Well, what's the other thing?
06:29I mean, we were just watching something the other night and it was like, we were watching
06:32Conan last night and Jonah Hill was talking about how there was a movie where he wanted
06:35to have a Nickelback song and he was on this acid trip and I guess it was supposed to take,
06:39you know, to make fun of Nickelback again, which is weird.
06:43It's like, it's almost like, it's almost like making fun of the kid in the wheelchair
06:46at this point, you know?
06:47It's just move on to somebody else, you know?
06:49Yeah.
06:50And so I guess Nickelback said no and he was like, whoa, you know, and I sort of,
06:55I was, you know, I felt really bad for them.
06:57There's no reason for them to be the whipping boys every single time.
07:00There are other really bad bands out there.
07:02Maybe pick some other ones.
07:03At least Nickelback's good at what they do.
07:05Well, you know, the problem is once you make it to the top, people want to tear you down.
07:08So when you become that popular, then they're out for you.
07:11Well, I mean, you know, they took the mantle off to Creed, but I'd say I'd rather make
07:14fun of like Linkin Park, you know?
07:16Right.
07:17Oh God.
07:18Well, they're also a big band.
07:20So isn't that, everyone likes to make fun of the guys at the top, right?
07:22I make fun of them all the time.
07:23And she'll, she'll, she'll, she'll come across the room and strange.
07:26That's fine.
07:27I'm pretty sure I deserve it, but I just, I would honestly, I'd say there's somebody
07:32that does the same thing over and over again as well.
07:34You know what I mean?
07:35Occasionally they do something that's slightly different and I, you have to give them credit
07:37for it, but it's like, yeah, I mean, there's, there's, if you look, if you, if your target
07:42is the band at the top, then surely they should be one of those.
07:44You know what I mean?
07:45Right.
07:46Right.
07:47Sure.
07:48I don't know.
07:49So you're going to play a song for us?
07:50Nope.
07:51Let's, uh, the good, the good news is Brian's still here.
07:52He has not met his, his untimely demise yet.
07:55Uh, so I think the guys are going to play a few songs for us today.
07:58Uh, give it up for Seether, ladies and gentlemen.
08:00Take the light and darken everything around me.
08:28Call the clouds and listen closely.
08:34I'm lost without you.
08:37Call your name every day.
08:43When I feel so helpless, I'm falling down.
08:50But I'll rise above this, rise above this.
08:55I hate the mind.
08:58Regrets are better, left unspoken.
09:03For all we know, this void will grow.
09:11And everything is in vain.
09:16Distressing you, though it leaves me open.
09:21Feels so right.
09:24Call your name every day.
09:25But I'll end it all before it gets me.
09:30Call your name every day.
09:35When I feel so helpless, I'm falling down.
09:42But I'll rise above this, rise above this.
09:47Call your name every day.
09:52Call your name every day.
09:53Call our name every day.
09:54When I feel so helpless doing what's falling down.
09:55I'm so helpless, I'm falling down
09:59But I'll rise above this, rise above this town
10:05I'll mend myself before it gets me
10:26Mend myself before it gets me
10:30I'll mend myself before it gets me
10:35Mend myself before it gets me
10:39Call your name every day
10:45When I feel so helpless, I'm falling down
10:51But I'll rise above this, rise above this
10:57For the eight ways he said
11:02He was feeling helpless, falling down
11:08I'll rise above this, rise above this
11:14Rise above this, rise above this
11:19Thank you, I tried something new there
11:43It's called Clear Your Throat in the middle of the song
11:45That song was a tribute to your brother who passed in 2007, correct?
11:53Yep
11:53Tell me about the rise above fest that you guys do now
11:57This will be the second year you did it back in Maine
11:59To raise awareness for suicide prevention
12:03We skipped last year, unfortunately
12:07But it's something we'd like to do annually now if we can
12:10It was really good, it was great
12:13We had a lot of friends that donated stuff for auctions and things like that
12:17A lot of bands came out and played
12:20Ben Sevenfold, Heldia, a bunch of other guys
12:22And we raised a lot of money
12:25And hopefully some awareness for suicide
12:29It's not something that people tend to want to talk about
12:33But it's a really big problem amongst teenagers
12:37And war vets coming back
12:39And they don't know where to go, what to do
12:41So, yeah, hopefully we can
12:44And I think with the recent passing of Robin Williams
12:48You see that it can affect anyone
12:50It really can
12:51It's like someone famous to make a real difference
12:53It's sad, but it's true
12:55It's sad, but true
12:56Is it what?
12:57Famous people get sad too?
12:58Yeah, yeah
12:59Yeah, and it's something that a lot of people try to sweep under the rug
13:02And they don't want to talk about
13:03And, you know, it's like, oh, that's a problem
13:05You shouldn't have that problem
13:07It's a sickness like any other sickness
13:09It's something that should be discussed
13:11So, let me ask you a question, Sean
13:13Five CDs
13:15Your five favorite CDs
13:16Let's say we'll do the old desert island thing
13:18You're going to be stranded on an island
13:20You only have five CDs
13:22Trust me, there's a CD player
13:23You have one
13:24Okay
13:25You can only bring it
13:26Because everybody's going
13:27Well, if I'm on or not
13:28No, you've got five CDs
13:29You can only take for the rest of your life
13:31What are they going to be?
13:32Vanilla Ice to the Extreme
13:33Wow
13:33That is extreme
13:36Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits
13:37Perfect
13:37Anything by my boy Candy Rogers
13:41Yeah
13:41Then
13:44Have you heard of those Rockabye Lullaby CDs?
13:47Yes
13:48With the little bells
13:48Which one do you have?
13:49The Tool one
13:50Tool
13:50Yes, perfect
13:51That really puts me to sleep every night
13:52And then
13:53I don't know
13:55Something by
13:56Something by
13:58Aqua
13:58I suspect you would die an early death on this island
14:01Yeah
14:01I think the whole point is not to survive a long time
14:04Drive yourself insane with music
14:08Dale, how about you?
14:09Let me see if we can get a straight answer out of you
14:12Five CDs
14:13Vulgar Display of Power
14:15Okay
14:15Good
14:16August and Everything After
14:19By Counting Crows
14:20Right
14:20That was a good record
14:21Yeah
14:22Yeah
14:22Yeah
14:23What else?
14:27This is a really tough one
14:28Yeah, and you'll always think of something later
14:30Yeah
14:30I can't believe I'm
14:31Injustice for All maybe
14:32Yeah
14:32Metallica, sure
14:33Don't you like
14:35Wouldn't you like a Guns N' Roses open with you as well?
14:37Yeah, maybe some Guns N' Roses
14:38I don't know
14:39Maybe
14:40Maybe like a
14:40Bob Seger's Greatest Hits or something
14:42Change it up a little bit
14:44Yeah, sure
14:44And then like
14:45Something by Explosions in the Sky
14:46Or something
14:47So I'll be able to cover all my bases
14:49Good, good
14:50So when did the
14:51When did the beards come along, guys?
14:54I notice everybody sporting the beard now
14:56Everybody sporting the beard
14:57Even in the artwork in the album
14:58It's a prerequisite for being in the band
15:00Yeah
15:00Must have facial hair
15:02He doesn't grow enough
15:03So he's allowed to trim his up in a certain direction
15:06He's talking to Brian
15:07Who's got the least amount of facial hair in the room
15:08We've all just
15:09We just developed a healthy obsession with Paul Bunyan
15:11It's not a big deal
15:12Now do you trim them
15:15Or do you let them go full on like Grizzly Adams
15:17Yeah
15:18We don't do that
15:18Whatever's the easiest
15:20I don't care
15:21I'm just letting myself go
15:23Pretty much
15:24It's beach shaving, man
15:26It does
15:27It really does
15:27I used to trim a while
15:29And then I just
15:29I stopped doing that
15:30So I let it grow really long
15:32And then I'll trim it down
15:33And then I'll grow it out again
15:34Right, right
15:35The only reason I cut mine
15:37Is I trimmed it about a month ago
15:38Because it was down
15:39It was about like
15:40You're a shine
15:40Because my wife makes me do it
15:41She's like
15:41That is a nasty
15:42You look homeless
15:43It's nasty
15:44I find people ask me
15:46For less change in the streets now
15:47But I do get offered weed a lot more
15:50Which is weird too
15:51That's all right
15:52All right
15:52All right
15:53Let's hear another song, Jens
15:55What do you got for us?
15:56Okay
15:56I'll take it again
15:57So who's to know if your soul will fade at all
16:06The one you sold to fool the world
16:11You lost your self-esteem along the way
16:19Good God, you're coming up with reasons
16:23Good God, you're dragging me down
16:28Good God, it's the changing of the season
16:32I feel so rude
16:34So follow me down
16:36And just fake it
16:38You're out of direction
16:41You're out of direction
16:41Faking it
16:43You don't belong here
16:46Faking it
16:47You feel like infection
16:50You're such a hypocrite
16:55You should know that your lies don't hide your flaws
17:09No sense in hiding all of yours
17:13You gave up on your dreams
17:16You gave up on your dreams along the way
17:21Good God, you're coming up with reasons
17:25Good God, you're dragging me down
17:30Good God, it's the changing of the season
17:34And I feel so rude
17:36You follow me down
17:38And just fake it
17:41You're out of direction
17:43Fake it
17:45You don't belong here
17:48Fake it
17:50You feel like infection
17:52Oh, oh
17:54You're such a hypocrite
17:57Cause I can fake with the stuff
18:26Anyone
18:27I can fake with the best of them all
18:32Cause I can fake with the best of anyone
18:36Cause I can fake it all
18:40So who's to know if your soul will fade at all
18:54The one you sold to fool the world
18:59You lost your self-esteem along the way
19:07Good God, you're coming up with reasons
19:11Good God, you're dragging me down
19:16Good God, it's the changing of the season
19:20And I feel so rude
19:22And I feel so rude
19:22So follow me down
19:24And just fake it
19:27If you're out of direction
19:29Fake it
19:31You don't belong here
19:34Fake it
19:36You feel like infection
19:38Fake it
19:44If you're out of direction
19:47Fake it
19:49If you don't belong here
19:52Fake it
19:53If you feel like infection
19:55Oh, oh
19:57You're such a hypocrite
20:00Thank you
20:14That
20:15That was a cool version
20:17That was a cool version
20:19Yeah, it doesn't work the other way acoustically
20:22Yeah
20:22Well, you know, here's the thing
20:24We'll play it later
20:24And someone out there will say
20:27It doesn't sound anything like the record
20:28How come it didn't sound like the record?
20:30How come I didn't play it like the knowledge?
20:33Very cool
20:33Thanks, guys
20:34That sounded awesome
20:36Really, really, really enjoyed it
20:37So tell me about Wind Up Records
20:40You guys formed in 1999 in South Africa
20:43Under the name Sarin Gas, correct?
20:45Yeah
20:45And then you were signed to Wind Up Records
20:47Changed the name to Seether
20:49Best part of my life
20:50Right
20:50So
20:50Then Wind Up Records, of course, sells the rights to their back catalog
20:55And your contract to another company
20:57That had to be
20:59That had to scare the crap out of you
21:01Yeah, no?
21:01Yeah
21:02It was pretty awful
21:03And we didn't get an email or a phone call or a text or anything from anyone
21:07So we found out basically in a press release that we had been sold off to somebody else
21:11Wow
21:12Halfway through writing the new album
21:13So that was put on hold for a while
21:16And you have no idea what's going to happen at this point
21:17You don't know if you're going to be dropped
21:19You don't know if you're going to
21:19Well, then you look up their back catalog
21:22And there's not a lot of rock bands on there
21:23You know, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles are a good company to be in
21:31But I don't know that we necessarily fit
21:33Right
21:34But I mean, there was a Paul McCartney
21:36And amongst others
21:38But certainly in the beginning
21:40It felt like, well, we were just going to be shelved
21:43And then, you know, they would concentrate on the other back catalog stuff that they'd bought
21:47That would make them more money
21:48And it turns out they're the greatest label we've ever been signed to
21:51And they hired a whole rock department just for our band
21:54And then to start that side of their label going
21:56And everyone that works on the label is awesome
21:58And everyone that we deal with is more passionate of that
22:01Than I think our entire label was in 12 years
22:04Really?
22:04Really?
22:05And that's person to person
22:07So we feel like we finally got signed to a real label
22:10And I hope something horrible happens to the other one
22:13I have no problem with that comically happening to me
22:18I mean, they certainly would deserve it, I guess
22:21I mean, I spent 12 years being told by A&R people
22:24I don't know what I'm doing
22:24Telling me that I can't write songs
22:26That I suck
22:27That I should hire other people to do it for me
22:29I mean, so I have no love for that label, man
22:31So did you ever just take number one song after number one song
22:33And shove it back in their face?
22:34Oh yeah, I didn't think I would have to
22:36I didn't think I'd have to
22:37But every single time we did a new album
22:38It was the same story
22:39And it was the same runaround every time
22:40And to the point where I just
22:41I wanted to quit, man
22:42Because if someone keeps telling you for that long
22:45And that consistently that you don't know what you're doing
22:47It makes you want to just give up
22:49And I will never forgive those guys for that
22:53Because the A&R guy co-wrote one song with Daughtry
22:57And now he knows everything about songwriting
22:59He's like, dude, bite me, man
23:01Seriously
23:02And you're friends with Train?
23:04Who says that out loud?
23:07Train sucks
23:08Even Train hates Train
23:10How do you really feel?
23:14Oh yeah, I thought I did
23:15I cleaned it up, though
23:16For radio, man
23:18That's good
23:19Well, they are
23:20I suppose the bright spot in that whole story
23:25Is they signed your band
23:27And you are where you are today
23:28Fifteen years later
23:29Yeah, and I must say
23:30Six months later
23:31When we started dealing with them
23:32And we started meeting them
23:33It was amazing
23:34And even going into the studio
23:35They were like, yeah, go ahead
23:36We believe in you guys
23:37And they never got involved
23:38They came in at the very end
23:40And they were having a listening party
23:41With Brendan O'Brien
23:41And everyone stood up
23:42And was cheering
23:43And it was really cool
23:45They really believe in what we do
23:46And it's awesome
23:47To have someone finally believing in us as well
23:49Which we never had before
23:50So who was it that told you
23:52To cover Careless Whisperer
23:53And have you fired them?
23:54No
23:54No
23:56We
23:56It's not as good as Banana Ramsey
23:58That's all I'm saying
23:59The reason
24:00Because we always get asked
24:01To do these stupid things
24:02And so we said
24:03Well, let's do something really stupid
24:04Right
24:04I thought it was great
24:06To be honest with you
24:06I'm just busting your balls
24:07Well, there's a whole long story behind that
24:09Dale and I used to play that to each other
24:10On each other's voicemails
24:11In South Africa
24:11It was like our little
24:12You know
24:13Love song to each other
24:14Right
24:14And because
24:16Who can deny that
24:16Saxophone solo
24:17Ironically, of course
24:19And so
24:19So then
24:19We get asked
24:20As all bands
24:21Hey, can you guys do
24:22A serious song
24:23For Valentine's Day
24:24So we said
24:24Sure
24:25Put us in the studio for a day
24:26We'll deliver
24:27A Valentine's Day song for you
24:29And obviously
24:29You know
24:30It's not
24:31It's us taking the piss
24:32Right
24:33So it's like
24:33Cool
24:34And then it becomes
24:35Well, we really
24:35No one gets the sense of humor
24:36No one gets that it's a joke
24:38Now they want it to be a single
24:40Because Wind Up has no vision
24:41And it becomes a single
24:43And then it gets put on the album
24:43And so on and so forth
24:45I think the last time we played it
24:47Was about
24:47I don't know
24:48Four or five years ago
24:49And I think the last time we played it
24:50There was a guy standing by the soundboard
24:52Just flipping us off
24:52The hallway
24:53I was like
24:54I get it, man
24:55It's not
24:55I understand
24:57So it was something like that
25:00Where we were just
25:01Making fun of ourselves
25:02In front of this request
25:04Because when we find we don't have a choice
25:07If we do it badly
25:08Then we don't get arsed again
25:09And we never got arsed again
25:10To do a Valentine's Day song
25:11So I guess mission accomplished
25:14But George Michael didn't mind
25:17No
25:17Yeah, sure
25:18Because how does that work
25:19When you cover somebody's song
25:20And it gets a lot of airplay
25:21He made a lot of money
25:22He makes a lot of money
25:23He makes all the money
25:23And you guys don't see anything
25:24It's just
25:25So you're welcome, George
25:27Not a lot of money
25:27In covering songs then, is there?
25:29No
25:29So are you making
25:29Veruca Salt some cash too?
25:31Hopefully
25:32Yeah
25:32I don't understand
25:33What the whole thing
25:34Is with those people either, man
25:35I just read an interview recently
25:36Where they thought
25:36We were making fun of them
25:37By choosing that
25:39Where we denied
25:41Even knowing that they existed
25:42And I was like, man
25:42You know what?
25:44Just if you read
25:45A couple of interviews
25:45And pull your head
25:47Right out of your backside
25:48Yeah
25:48We named this band
25:49Because we like the song
25:50And we like the band
25:51And I'm sick and tired
25:52Of them talking
25:53Crap about us
25:54Because they don't
25:56What, they live under a rock
25:57And don't have internet?
25:57See, I thought they'd be flattered
25:59I always thought it was cool
25:59And I had always wondered
26:01Why it had taken you so long
26:02To cover that song
26:03Yeah, and to be honest
26:03I'm kind of disappointed
26:04That it was like
26:06You're paying them homage
26:07And we did the song
26:09Which sort of coincided
26:10At the right time
26:11With them trying to make
26:12A comeback
26:12And all those kinds
26:13So we're basically
26:14Helping them out
26:15Sure
26:15And all they can do
26:16Is talk smack
26:17And I'm like, man
26:17God, is it too late
26:18To change the band name?
26:20I can find something
26:21Way cooler
26:21Don't you have
26:24The seether tattoos
26:25Though, I think
26:26Dale does
26:26Yeah, yeah
26:27I never made that mistake
26:28Because I always knew
26:29There's somebody
26:29I'm going to change the band name
26:30I'm not that committed
26:34To this band
26:34Right
26:34Fifteen years later
26:36Still not going to get
26:37The seether tattoos
26:37Yeah, no
26:38I probably won't, man
26:40Yeah
26:40So on the
26:42I guess you'd call it
26:43The collection
26:44The greatest hits record
26:452002 through 2013
26:47Is that what it was?
26:48It's got the dog
26:48Defecating on the
26:49Yes
26:50I had read somewhere
26:51That that was kind of
26:52A tribute to
26:53To wind up
26:54That that was
26:54Well, I didn't really
26:55Like the idea
26:55Right
26:56So they said
26:57We could do the artwork
26:57Ah
26:58And we sent them a message
27:00Good, okay
27:01And if you look closely
27:01There's actually a toad
27:02Coming out of his butt
27:03But you have to look
27:03You have to look really close
27:04Yeah
27:04And also
27:05Don't say we're not
27:06A class act, bro
27:06We just didn't want
27:09To do it, man
27:09We thought it was
27:10We thought it was
27:10Premature
27:11We thought it was
27:12A cash cow on their part
27:13But it ultimately
27:14Turned out to be
27:15The last thing we did
27:15With them
27:16Right
27:16So it was a good way
27:17To say goodbye to them
27:18And I just honestly
27:22That was my opinion of it
27:23I just
27:24I don't like those things
27:26I've never liked them
27:27Unless it's been
27:2830 or 40 years
27:29Right
27:30I don't think it's necessary
27:31And so
27:31You know
27:32Here are people
27:33That have bought our music
27:33Buy these songs again
27:34You know
27:36I will tell you
27:37The upside to those
27:38Collections
27:39Those Greatest Hits records
27:40As a kid
27:41When you could only afford
27:43If you liked a band
27:43And you could only afford
27:45One record
27:45And you could buy a record
27:46That had all the songs
27:47You liked from this band on it
27:48That was pretty cool
27:49Because I remember buying
27:50A lot of those collections
27:51You know
27:52I like that too
27:54But I think it's also
27:55A disservice to any band
27:56To say hey
27:57These are the songs
27:58That the label wanted you to hear
27:59Right
27:59Whereas the songs
28:01We want you to hear
28:01Are probably the ones
28:02That aren't those ones
28:02You know what I mean
28:03So maybe it's a good introduction
28:04To people
28:05And it does serve a purpose
28:06But we just didn't want to do it
28:08And it's like
28:09It's either something you do
28:10When you have nothing else going on
28:11Right
28:12Or because they're trying
28:14To get out of a record deal
28:15You know
28:16And even then
28:16They didn't count as an album anyway
28:18So it didn't help us
28:19Get closer to getting away
28:20From that label anyway
28:21But yeah
28:22It's done now
28:22And so
28:23It is what it is
28:24But I don't think
28:25We'll be doing any of those
28:25Anytime soon again
28:26Unless we get to do the artwork again
28:28Right
28:28So 15 years
28:3115 years man
28:32Do you ever stop and go
28:33Wow
28:3315 years
28:35I've been successful at this
28:36For 15 years
28:37I think we do
28:38And certainly when we look
28:39At some of the bands
28:39That we've toured with
28:40Many bands
28:40That aren't even around anymore
28:41Like if you think back
28:42To this
28:43When we started
28:43Trust Company
28:44Submersed
28:46There were a whole bunch of bands
28:48Even on our label
28:4812 Stones
28:49It was even on our label
28:49They're gone
28:50Social Burn
28:51Cinch
28:53Epidemic
28:54Raw
28:55Raw
28:56They made a comeback
28:57They have a song called
28:57Something
28:58Super Bass Heavy
29:00Dubstep or something
29:01You haven't heard it?
29:02No
29:02Because it doesn't pay attention
29:03I pay attention
29:04It's called Super Dubstep
29:06Or something
29:06I like Raw
29:07So check it out
29:08But if you think about it that way
29:09There's a lot of bands
29:10That didn't make it
29:11And good bands
29:11Yeah
29:11I think
29:12Honestly
29:13One of our bands
29:14That we liked the most
29:14Was Social Burn
29:15I thought it was
29:16Real good poppy songwriting
29:18And I don't know why
29:18They ever didn't make it
29:19And I certainly
29:22Would prefer them
29:23To a lot of the stuff
29:23That's out now
29:24But yeah
29:26We never
29:27I don't know
29:28Somehow
29:28We're lucky to be here
29:29I guess
29:29And it's great
29:30I mean
29:30I definitely appreciate it
29:33Yeah
29:33But by the same token
29:35You almost feel bad
29:36For the other guys
29:37Because I think
29:38They deserved it too
29:38Right
29:39Well play us another song
29:40Okay
29:41This is a request
29:43Oh
29:46Awesome request
29:47Yeah
29:48Yeah
29:48I watched you change
30:09You were on fire
30:17I looked away
30:24You were on fire
30:31Cause I watched a change
30:38In you
30:40It's like you never
30:44Had wings
30:49Now you feel
30:53So alive
30:56I watched a change
31:01I took you home
31:12Set you on the glass
31:20I pulled off your wings
31:27Then I left
31:33Cause I watched a change
31:41In you
31:43It's like you never
31:47Had wings
31:51Now you feel
31:55So alive
31:59I watched a change
32:05It's like you never
32:10Had wings
32:13I look at the cross
32:31Oh, I look at the cross
32:41Then I looked away
32:49I give you the gun
32:57To blow me away
33:03Cause I'll watch the change in you
33:13It's like you've never had things
33:21Now you feel so alive
33:27I'll watch the change
33:33Now you feel so alive
33:43Now you feel so alive
33:51Now you feel so alive
33:58Cause I'll watch the change
34:05It's like you've never had ways
34:13Oh, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh
34:29You've changed
34:40You've changed
34:48You've changed
34:56On fire
35:02Agree or disagree, Deftones, White Pony, best record ever made.
35:10I think so, yeah.
35:11I like everything they do.
35:12One of my all-time favorites.
35:13That's one of my favorites.
35:14And around the fur, when I was a kid, was a huge one for me.
35:17Huge, huge Deftones fan.
35:18That was awesome, man.
35:19Thanks.
35:19Thanks for playing that.
35:20That was super cool.
35:21What's it like for Dale and John watching the other half of the band play?
35:25You guys are just chilling over here.
35:27You guys are wearing flip-flops and Bahamas shorts.
35:29I hope I'm there by osmosis, man.
35:31I can't have, like, I don't know, swing with it.
35:33And you want to be a part of it.
35:34You are a part of it, but yet you're watching it.
35:36Yeah, isn't that kind of...
35:37It's really cool.
35:37I was watching you guys get into it.
35:39And I'm like, yeah, this is cool.
35:40Yeah, yeah.
35:41Just to...
35:42Speaking of your music, this is something...
35:45You know, you go through, I guess, stages where, you know,
35:48there's so much music out there that you listen to, you know,
35:51five or ten records for a while.
35:52And then, you know, six months later, you'll switch that up
35:54and listen to five or ten records.
35:55And it had been a while since I'd gone and listened to, like,
35:57all my Cedar records.
35:58But preparing for this, I went back and listened to them.
36:00I forgot how much I dig your music, man.
36:03Really, really good stuff.
36:05It's also my, like, favorite gym music.
36:07If you're, like, those days that...
36:08If I put on something like gasoline...
36:10Yeah.
36:11I don't care how lazy I'm feeling.
36:13It just makes me want to kill somebody.
36:14It's great.
36:15In a good way.
36:16In a good way.
36:17In a good way.
36:17That's good.
36:20So you're touring now with Godsmack, part of these festival shows.
36:23You guys have done a lot of festivals over the years.
36:25You've played a few for us, the MM BBQs.
36:27I think two of them now.
36:29Do you like these kind of shows where you get to see all these other bands play?
36:34And do you watch the other bands play?
36:38We like these shows.
36:40Yeah.
36:41And we watch these bands.
36:45Usually, we're actually, you know, we watch all the bands if we can.
36:48Especially...
36:49Because you see a lot of bands that go on these festival type shows.
36:50At least one time.
36:51And they stay on the bus.
36:52And you don't see them until they come out and play.
36:54And I think there's a lot of those bands that are maybe playing the second, third, fourth slot
36:59that might be up-and-comers that could really, really get a leg up
37:04if the headliners of that festival show came out and watched their set.
37:07Or at least give them a few words of encouragement.
37:08Is that the point I'm sure?
37:09I will say this one doesn't feel as if there's that much camaraderie amongst everybody as there normally is.
37:15Right.
37:15So it's not quite as summer campy as they normally are.
37:20Sure.
37:21But that's just through no fault of our own.
37:24Because we'll, you know, run about half an hour after I said,
37:27there's at least three of us that are feeling really, really good.
37:31Well, a perfect example is, you know, Hailstorm.
37:34Lizzie Hale, the kids from the Philadelphia area here.
37:37And we've been with them since they were playing bar gigs.
37:40Yeah.
37:41And when they got out on the road with guys like you and with all these other bands
37:44on these festival shows, it really, really increased their exposure.
37:47I mean, they blew up from that.
37:49But also, we had a lot of camaraderie.
37:50We love those kids.
37:51And it was like, you know, we'd hang out with each other every day.
37:53We'd watch each other play every day.
37:54And I don't really have that with a lot of bands anymore.
37:57And we've done some tours where it's like, you know, when we did Crossfade and Dark New Day
38:02and us, it was like that tour was killer.
38:05We were all just, we would go everywhere together.
38:07All the bands and crews and everything.
38:09And I think that, unfortunately, some of the younger bands think they're too cool these days.
38:15And I've had some run-ins with some of them before.
38:17Because if you don't play your instruments, I don't, you know, respect you.
38:21Right.
38:21That happens.
38:22That really happens.
38:23Happens a lot.
38:23Yeah, man.
38:24Really?
38:24Like blatantly just miming, dude.
38:27So I immediately, I don't know.
38:29Maybe I just think, I think if you're in a band, you're supposed to be playing.
38:32And I think that your hair shouldn't take longer to do than it takes you to write some songs.
38:41You know what I mean?
38:42Is that wrong?
38:43I mean, I don't know.
38:44No, well, I didn't realize it was so rampant.
38:46I didn't realize that it happened as often as it apparently does.
38:49I think, unfortunately, there's a reversion to this idea that the image is more important than the music.
38:57That's more substance than what's on the CD.
38:59And I think that's really sad.
39:00But, you know, having said that, I mean, I'm sure these guys will be working in a Taco Bell in about six years.
39:07I don't know.
39:08But there's some bands on this tour that I'm not fans of.
39:12But other bands that I do, I am fans of.
39:14So it just doesn't feel the same.
39:15It just doesn't feel like it's fun.
39:17It is.
39:18I mean, obviously, it's great to be on a tour and playing and having a good time.
39:21It just doesn't, like, nobody wants to hang out.
39:22Do you have a favorite band to tour with?
39:25Like, if you could put together...
39:26Anybody that wants to hang out with us?
39:27Yeah.
39:27In fact, some of the nicest guys to tour with are Nickelback.
39:31Those guys, they look after the bands they tour with.
39:34I suppose if you're on the road day in and day out, really, that camaraderie is a big deal.
39:40Well, wouldn't you?
39:40Yeah.
39:41Instead of everyone hanging their heads when they walk by each other in the hallway, which is kind of odd.
39:46Or going into a catering, like, oh, I don't want to see that guy right now.
39:49I guess I'll eat later.
39:51And that's what's been happening, man.
39:52And it's like, I don't know.
39:54Maybe I should shut my mouth.
39:55No, it seems like the road would wear on you real quick, like, if that...
39:58I'm just over that stuff.
39:59We're like, we all sing Kumbaya backstage.
40:01It doesn't happen.
40:02You know what I mean?
40:03The reality is that some guys out there are not cool guys to hang out with, and other guys are.
40:07And unfortunately, I just...
40:09I mean, and all of us kind of miss those days when it was a tour when everybody really got on really well.
40:13And unfortunately, this isn't one of those.
40:15And that doesn't make it a bad tour.
40:17It just means that we just have more fun with ourselves than we do with other people.
40:22And other people don't get to get these charming personalities.
40:26So when you're not on the road, what are you guys doing?
40:29Do you go back to South Africa?
40:32Do you stay here in the States?
40:33Do you have a place you call home?
40:35Yeah.
40:36I used to.
40:37Until I...
40:38Okay, I don't care what you believe, but I bought a house that was haunted, and I'm just selling it.
40:42Get out of here.
40:43It was crazy, man.
40:44Where?
40:45Nashville.
40:45Yeah, really?
40:46And so much so that...
40:47Well, now you've got to tell the story.
40:48You can't just stay at home.
40:48So there was a whole bunch of stuff going on for a couple of months, and so much so that
40:51one night, my girlfriend and I actually got in our car and left, because we were so afraid
40:56of something, because the doors to our bedroom sort of got slammed into, like it was somebody
41:01on the other side trying to get through.
41:02Right.
41:03And after I'd finished wiping my underwear out, we literally got in a car, drove to a
41:11hotel, and then called like this, because we'd called this ghost paranormal activity
41:19kind of investigative group, and they said they could only come on the Friday, and this
41:22was on a Sunday night, so we actually went and stayed in a hotel until the Friday, and
41:25came back, because I wasn't going to go back there without their help.
41:28And basically what happened was there was a whole bunch of stuff that they came in and
41:30did, and then it didn't help.
41:31So nothing happened, so I'm out.
41:34So what kind of-
41:34I don't like fighting stuff I can't see now, right?
41:37Well, no, it was just antagonistic stuff, like it was stuff to keep you on edge, and
41:41so every time you'd think that, okay, cool, nothing's going on, then something would
41:46happen, like a noise, or a knock, or a bang, or something that was like obvious, like,
41:50hey, hey, you know, and it's just bizarre, I mean, I was always on edge, and I didn't
41:57want to go home, so I didn't feel like I was, I mean, I wasn't sleeping.
42:01I was waking up every morning at 3.30 in the morning, and then smelling like rotting
42:04meat, or closet doors would open themselves.
42:07Yeah, it's time to move, yeah.
42:08Yeah, man.
42:09You just saw the house, okay.
42:10And I spent 35 years, and I'm 35 now, so I was like, well, maybe they are ghosts, I
42:16don't know.
42:16Now I'm like, yeah, they are, dude.
42:17So that, yeah, I used to watch that ghost adventure show, and I thought, yeah, that's
42:22hocus, man.
42:23Somebody threw that rock, no, dude.
42:25I mean, unless somebody ran into our house, slammed those doors, and then ran back out,
42:29we could see them, and they were like, you know, we could see shadow figures through
42:32the doors and stuff, and...
42:33So you live on the bus now?
42:34What are you doing?
42:35Dude, as of right now, I'm camping out in someone's backyard.
42:38Whoever's got the biggest yard, I'm camping in it.
42:39Right, right.
42:40It just, I mean, I don't know, it just wasn't for me, man.
42:44Like, I was terrified half the time.
42:47Dude, I'm a grown man, and I'm scared of turning off the lights at night?
42:50Come on.
42:51Yeah.
42:51That's not cool.
42:52Well, I always get chills when I hear stories like this, because when you talk to another
42:55grown man who's obviously got his wits about him, and he says, dude, I left for a week
42:58because I was that scared, you go, wow, there was something there.
43:01Yeah.
43:02And, you know, it's really cool.
43:03People are like, oh, there's no such thing as...
43:04Fine, fine.
43:05Believe that.
43:05Yeah.
43:06Because I'm glad you can go through a live thing, but I never really believed either, and I used
43:10to think people out of their minds, and now I know they're not.
43:12So it's just, it just takes one horrifically terrifying.
43:16And it wasn't like, you know, then we get stories about like, okay, so this other couple
43:19moved into a house in your neighborhood, and they were unpacking their kitchen stuff, and
43:22the knives started flying into the closets.
43:24I'm like, that was a little bit more extreme than what we had.
43:27Yeah.
43:28At least ours was just a little noisy, but yeah, it was kind of, I don't know.
43:32Yeah.
43:34Yeah.
43:34Yeah.
43:36Freeloaders.
43:37But anyway, yeah, it was pretty scary.
43:39Well, thanks for freaking me out.
43:40No, man, no problem.
43:41That's great.
43:42That's great.
43:42Why don't you play us another song now?
43:45Sure thing.
43:45Well, fortune favors not the young, spoken words and songs unsung.
44:13Right.
44:14I guess I don't have what it takes to never learn from my mistakes.
44:24Right.
44:25I miss that I was strong.
44:32All this time I've lost, I'll never find again.
44:47So save today, the secrets that you prayed for, awake, cause we deserve it so much more.
45:03And save the secrets that you prayed for, awake, I'll see you on the other side.
45:15Right.
45:16Right.
45:17Right.
45:18I never learn from my mistakes.
45:22I guess I don't have what it takes.
45:28Right.
45:29I wish that I was wrong and you'd come home again.
45:36Cause all this time I've lost, I'll never find again.
45:43Cause all this time I've lost, I'll never find again.
45:50Cause all this time I've lost, I'll never find again.
45:57Cause all this time I've lost, I'll never find again.
46:04So save today, the secrets that you prayed for, awake, cause we deserve it so much more.
46:21And save the secrets that you prayed for, awake, I'll see you on the other side.
46:34And save the secrets that you prayed for.
46:41Say you can help me now.
46:47Say you can help me out
46:52Say you can help me down
46:58Say you can help me out
47:03So save today the secrets that you prayed for
47:10Awake, cause we deserve it so much more
47:17And save the secrets that you prayed for
47:22Awake, I'll see you on the other side
47:27Save today the secrets that you prayed for
47:33Awake, cause we deserve it so much more
47:39And save the secrets that you prayed for
47:44Awake, I'll see you on the other side
47:50Awake, cause we deserve it so much more
48:20I don't know, I want it to be one though
48:23Yeah, it's my favorite song on the new album
48:25Cut 10 on the new record, really good stuff
48:27So you got a treat there, you got to hear that
48:29If you haven't heard it on the record yet
48:30Save today the name of the song
48:32Seether, gentlemen, thank you so much for coming in today

48:55We really do
48:56You think you'll still be touring in 15 years?
48:59Maybe not as many shows a year as this
49:02I'll be in 15 years
49:04Well, that's what, you know
49:05Do you think somebody like Robert Plant or Mick Jagger
49:08Any of those guys
49:09That just made me really sad to think about
49:11When they were like 30, they thought
49:12No, I'll be done
49:13We'll be done by the time we're 35
49:14When you're 16, you think so, yeah
49:16You think, oh, I'll be retired by 25
49:18It'd be sweet
49:19Now I'm rapidly approaching even 40
49:24It's terrifying
49:25I'm starting to go gray
49:26It's a silver beard
49:28Can you see yourself on stage at like 65?
49:31Oh, man
49:31Yeah, absolutely
49:32You can, yeah?
49:33I think we'll be playing all like the softer stuff though
49:35There you go
49:36None of the headbangy stuff
49:38We'll be playing like casinos in Atlantic City
49:40If there are any left
49:42Seated shows too
49:43We'll do gasoline and then jokes for 15 minutes
49:45Right, right
