00:00Hey guys, I'm Jen Green and this is Stryker. We're from Tailwaggers Academy.
00:03Today we're going to be doing a trick, putting your toys away.
00:07I love doing tricks with our dogs. They're silly, they're fun, but they can actually be useful for us.
00:13If you've ever stepped on one of these things in the middle of the night, you're actually going to appreciate this trick.
00:19This trick is going to be asking our dogs to put their toys away.
00:23It's a great way to reinforce what you're teaching your dogs in real life settings.
00:28You can teach your dogs anything, but if you don't use them in real life, what's the point?
00:33So this is something really fun that you can do with your dogs.
00:36We're going to start out with a step-by-step of how do I get my dogs to do this.
00:41First, sometimes fetching things doesn't come natural for a lot of dogs, so we need to kind of break it down into little pieces for them.
00:49We're going to start out with step one is we're going to put the word get with an object.
00:55It doesn't matter what it is. It could be a toy. It could be another object.
00:59We're going to present it to them.
01:00We're going to tell them to get, when they open up their mouth, we're going to mark it with a marker word.
01:05A marker word just means, you did something exactly what I wanted you to do.
01:10Now I'm going to reward you for it.
01:12So we'll use a word like yes.
01:14You can use a clicker if you've used clickers before.
01:17It's totally up to you what you prefer.
01:19So when he opens up his mouth, I'm going to tell him yes and I'm going to reward.
01:24The yes will always come before the reward.
01:27Look at yes as your paycheck.
01:30The food is the money.
01:31You always need to get that paycheck before you get your money.
01:34So just be mindful of that one.
01:36The other thing is we're trying to mark it as soon as our dogs do it.
01:40So try and do it pretty quickly after your dog actually follows through with that.
01:46The next part will be we're going to put the toy on the floor.
01:49We're going to point to it.
01:51We're going to tell him to get it again.
01:52But we want to see if he actually picks it up.
01:54The next part is we're going to ask him to pick it up, point to a basket or toy box where you keep your toys.
02:02And then we are going to mark that as well.
02:05The last step is we're going to ask them to pick up the toy, put it in the basket, and then we're going to reward it.
02:12But we're actually going to name it.
02:14Now you're going to notice that I don't name the last part until the very end.
02:19For this, I use the word load.
02:21You can use whatever word you want to.
02:23I have ulterior motives.
02:25I'm going to be using this trick for other things.
02:29So that's why I'm calling it load.
02:32So we're going to start out with, I'm just going to present it, and I'm just going to tell him to get.
02:36Get.
02:38Yes.
02:39He opened up his mouth a little bit.
02:42Get.
02:44Yes.
02:47Now the first one, he pushed it.
02:50That does not get a treat.
02:51He's only getting a treat.
02:53He's only getting marked if he actually does what I wanted him to do.
02:56And for them to push it initially is 100% normal.
03:00So don't get frustrated with that.
03:02Get.
03:04Yes.
03:04Good job, buddy.
03:09Get.
03:09Yes.
03:12Good boy.
03:12Good boy.
03:14I want to do one more, but normally I'll do about 8 to 10.
03:17Some things I do a little bit longer just because it's a little bit more complex, and I want to give my dog as much time as they need to figure this out.
03:25Get.
03:26Yes.
03:31Good boy.
03:31I waited him out on that, guys.
03:33He tried to beat the system a bit.
03:36I wanted him to wait out, wait it out a little bit in order for him to do it.
03:41Now I'm going to ask him to take a break, which just means get up.
03:43Now I'm going to point to the object, and I'm going to see if he actually picks it up.
03:49Get.
03:51Yes.
03:52Good job, buddy.
03:58Get.
04:02Yes.
04:03Good boy.
04:04Take a break.
04:05Come on.
04:06Good job, buddy.
04:07I'm going to move this basket over.
04:09Striker has done this, so I'm going to move him along a bit, but again, do it as long as you need to do it in order for your dog to understand it.
04:19If your dog drops the toy, it's okay.
04:22It's 100% okay.
04:24Dogs are going to make mistakes just like us.
04:27When Striker drops something or he doesn't follow through with something, I will tell him, uh-oh.
04:32Uh-oh just means follow through with what you were taught to do.
04:38So I'm going to put the toy right here.
04:41I'm going to move the basket right here.
04:43I'm going to tell him to get, and I'm going to point to this.
04:48Come on, bud.
04:49Uh-oh.
04:50He dropped it.
04:52It's okay.
04:53Take a break, buddy.
04:55Yes.
04:56Good boy.
04:58I'm going to take the toy back out again, and I'm going to tell him to get.
05:02And I'm going to point.
05:11Get, buddy.
05:14Yes.
05:14Good job.
05:18We're going to do this a couple more times because he's dropping this a lot, and I want him to, and he's just learning it, so it's 100% okay.
05:26I want him to pick it up and really put it in there.
05:31I don't want him to drop it all the time.
05:34I want him to understand to put it in first.
05:38Get your toy.
05:43And I'm pointing.
05:44Yes.
05:45Put it right in.
05:46Good job.
05:46I'm giving him a jackpot for that.
05:49Jackpot just means you're getting a bunch of rewards because you just did awesome.
05:53I was super proud of him for picking up the toy and then actually putting it in and not dropping it.
06:01I usually call all of his stuff toys just toys.
06:05I do call these things bones.
06:07The Benny Bones just bones and balls.
06:09I just call balls.
06:10You can call it whatever you want.
06:13Make it simple.
06:14It doesn't have to be anything fancy.
06:17Get your toy.
06:18Yes.
06:24Good job, buddy.
06:25Good job.
06:25He got another jackpot for that.
06:29Sometimes jackpots are a good thing.
06:32Actually, they're a good thing all the time.
06:34We don't want to give them all the time, but it actually is a good thing to motivate your dog when they're doing really, really well.
06:39I'm going to do one more of these, and then I'm actually going to name it.
06:42I want you to do it as much as you need to for your dog to understand what the expectation is.
06:49Get your toy.
06:52I'm going to point to it one more time.
06:53Yes.
06:54Good job, buddy.
06:55Very good.
06:58This one I'm going to name.
07:01I am going to put the word load with it.
07:03Can you sit?
07:03Good job, bubs.
07:05Get your toy.
07:08Load.
07:10Uh-oh.
07:10Uh-oh.
07:12Yes.
07:14Good boy, buddy.
07:17It's okay if they drop it, guys.
07:20Get your toy.
07:23Load.
07:24Yes.
07:25Very good.
07:26I'll do one more.
07:31Good job.
07:32Get your toy.
07:35Load.
07:36Yes.
07:37Good boy.
07:38So, I hope you guys have as much fun with this one as I did.
07:43Again, it's something to do, something fun to do with your dogs.
07:47But I actually think I may enjoy this one just as much as he does.
07:51Have fun with this.
