00:00:01MMR's Dreamstream Concert Series, 93.3 WMMR, Everything That Rocks.
00:00:09Thanks for coming out, everybody.
00:00:14In the daytime, no less.
00:00:17It's 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia. I'm Pierre Robert.
00:00:21And welcome to the Ardmore Music Hall and another edition of Pierre Presents.
00:00:24Our guest this afternoon came together as a band in 1996 in Quincy, Massachusetts.
00:00:30As legend has it, they first started playing in the basement of their friend's barbershop,
00:00:34but soon began to play more, tour, record, and eventually earned a spot opening for the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones on their 97 tour.
00:00:43They were signed by Hellcat Records in 97 and released their first full-length album, Do or Die, in 98,
00:00:49produced, interestingly enough, by Lars Fredrickson of Rancid, who I love.
00:00:53The original lead singer, Mike McColgan, left in 98, and the gentleman who would step into that role, Al Barr,
00:00:58has at that point, or had been at that point, the lead singer of a Boston band called The Bruisers.
00:01:05And their second album, but first without, was called The Gangs All Here, released in March of 99.
00:01:10Various members, too many to mention, came and went over the next several years,
00:01:14but the band continued to record onto the fourth and fifth record for Hellcat Records.
00:01:19On that fifth release, called The Warrior's Code, in June of 2005, it not only featured that title track,
00:01:25and another of my favorites, Sunshine Highway, but it introduced us, in a re-recorded version,
00:01:30to an upbeat little number of theirs called, I'm Shippin' Off to Boston.
00:01:34In 2007, they began recording on their own label, Born and Bred Records, and they would release the meanest of times,
00:01:43then came Going Out in Style in 2011, signed and sealed in blood in 2013,
00:01:48including great songs like The Boys Are Back and Rose Tattoo, and many more.
00:01:52In addition, there were a few live albums on the way, along the way, and a DVD,
00:01:56and an incredible amount of work for charity, including the founding of the Colada Fund in 2009.
00:02:03If all of that were not enough, last year on St. Paddy's Day, they celebrated their 20th anniversary together as a band.
00:02:12Very cool.
00:02:17All of that brings us to the upcoming release on Friday, January 6th, of what will be their ninth studio album,
00:02:2311 Short Stories of Pain and Glory.
00:02:25It's a great pleasure to welcome back to MMR, James Lynch on guitar, backing vocals,
00:02:30Matt Kelly on drums, Jeff DeRose on banjo, mandolin, and a zillion other things,
00:02:34Tim Brennan on lead guitar, and a zillion other instruments,
00:02:37Al Bar on lead vocals, and on bass guitar and lead vocals,
00:02:41Mr. Ken Casey.
00:02:42Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Dropkick Murphys.
00:02:47Oh my God.
00:02:50Pierre, you really did your homework.
00:02:52Or went to Wikipedia, one or the other.
00:02:55That was like an episode of This Is Your Life.
00:03:00There was some stuff on there I didn't even know about us.
00:03:03Wondering about that.
00:03:06So we're going to play a song.
00:03:08They said, we're going to do an interview.
00:03:09And I said, let's start with a song, then we'll do an interview,
00:03:11and then we'll play some more.
00:03:12The crowd all pumped up.
00:03:15All right, so this is another, an interview, three beers, okay.
00:03:21Song, three beers, and another song, okay.
00:03:24Oh boy.
00:03:25What day is it?
00:03:26So listen, we're going to play mostly songs off the new album,
00:03:32and hopefully you'll like them.
00:03:33Hopefully you've heard a few online already.
00:03:35And this one's called You'll Never Walk Alone.
00:03:37When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high
00:03:50And don't be afraid of the dark
00:03:56At the end of the storm There's a golden sky
00:04:04And the sweet silver song of a lie
00:04:10Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain
00:04:19And let all your dreams be tossed And blown
00:04:24Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart
00:04:34And you'll never walk alone
00:04:39You'll never walk alone
00:04:45You'll never walk alone
00:04:47When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high
00:04:53And don't be afraid of the dark
00:04:58At the end of the storm
00:05:02At the end of the storm There's a golden sky
00:05:06And the sweet silver song of a lark
00:05:11Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain
00:05:19And let all your dreams be tossed And blown
00:05:26Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart
00:05:32And you'll never walk alone
00:05:38You'll never walk alone
00:05:44Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart
00:05:57And you'll never walk alone
00:06:03You'll never walk alone
00:06:09Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart
00:06:16And you'll never walk alone
00:06:24You'll never walk alone
00:06:30You'll never walk alone
00:06:36The Dropkick Murphys
00:06:51Again, so nice to have you here with us
00:06:54Covering Rodgers and Hammerstein from the film
00:06:57Or actually the Broadway play Carousel
00:06:59Which then became a film
00:07:01And I was looking at all the people who had covered it
00:07:04You were in the fine company of Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Barry Manilow, Doris Day, Inglebert Humperdinck, Jackie Wilson, Johnny Cash, Judy Garland, Lee Greenwood, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, The Muppets, Perry Como, Pink Floyd, Ray Charles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, Tammy Winnett, The Three Tenors, as well as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra
00:07:32But the Muppets
00:07:34But the Muppets
00:07:35I didn't know that
00:07:36The Muppets
00:07:37The Muppets
00:07:38That's what we remember
00:07:39But as I understand, Ken, you heard the Jerry and the Pacemakers version of it
00:07:44And that was what made you think you might want to try it
00:07:47Yeah, I had it on my iPhone
00:07:50And it just came on random
00:07:53And it was, you know, we were at the time
00:07:55I think some people don't know this story
00:07:57At the time, and I know for a fact it's a big problem down here
00:08:00But there's the opiate epidemic
00:08:03And I've probably been to maybe 40 wakes in this past year or two
00:08:07And I was leaving one and sitting in the parking lot
00:08:10When the Jerry and the Pacemakers version came on
00:08:12And I just thought lyrically it was kind of fitting to the sadness
00:08:15And also to the hope, you know what I mean?
00:08:18Of people having to move forward and get past it
00:08:20Families and some people struggling to get over addiction
00:08:23So that was kind of what started the whole writing process for the record, you know?
00:08:27Well, the record, before we get to the record
00:08:29I just want to go back to the earliest days
00:08:31Because every band starts somewhere
00:08:33Was that accurate or was that a legend that you started in your friend's barbershop basement?
00:08:39Oh, yeah, yeah, the real going back to the very beginning
00:08:42Were you a legend, are you? Oh, yeah
00:08:44Both, both
00:08:46The band, I was bartending actually at Symphony Hall in Boston
00:08:52And that was my second job
00:08:54And I was going to school and working construction and bartending
00:08:57And a kid that I bartended with said
00:09:00He was going to Berklee and he had a band
00:09:03And he said, you're always talking about starting a band
00:09:05My band has a show in three weeks, I dare you to open for it
00:09:08So that was how the band started on a bet on three weeks notice
00:09:12And then we said, holy crap, I accepted this bet
00:09:15Where the hell are we going to rehearse?
00:09:17And yeah, our friend Karen Kelly had a barbershop
00:09:20And no stairs, she would just leave at night
00:09:23And leave us to sweep up all the hair
00:09:25Because you couldn't lift up the hats to go downstairs until you swept up
00:09:28So we would go down there
00:09:30And it was on a really busy road, Hancock Street in Quincy
00:09:33And the bottom windows were all boarded up
00:09:37And after about practicing down there maybe a week
00:09:40All of a sudden a foot comes kicking through the wood, kicks out the wood
00:09:43And these like teenage kids stick their heads in
00:09:46And they were like, that sounds great
00:09:48And we were like, our first fans
00:09:51Were vandals
00:09:52Nothing's changed much, Scott
00:09:56Then there was a place called the Rathskeller or the Rat
00:10:00That you guys was kind of, I guess, a home base for a while
00:10:03Is that still there in Boston?
00:10:04Oh, God, no
00:10:05It's been long ago
00:10:06Well, some of our clubs are still alive here
00:10:09That have been around for a long time
00:10:10Yeah, you do a good job of keeping them around
00:10:11But it's harder and harder
00:10:13But what was the rat like?
00:10:15Gentrification took it away
00:10:16What's that?
00:10:17Gentrification took the rat
00:10:18Sometime
00:10:19So there are condos where the rat once stood
00:10:21It's a hotel
00:10:22A fancy hotel
00:10:23And there's a suite in that hotel
00:10:25Called the Rat Suite
00:10:26That has all the memorabilia
00:10:27We recorded in there
00:10:28Really?
00:10:29Yeah
00:10:30That's awesome
00:10:31It's all we got
00:10:32We huddle around in a room and share the memories
00:10:34It does not smell like the rat did though
00:10:35Let's just say that
00:10:36But the rat was like Boston's answer to CBGB's
00:10:39You know what I mean?
00:10:40We played there
00:10:41And my mother had
00:10:42My mother told me she had her first drink there with a fake ID when she was a kid
00:10:46So there's a lot of history in the family
00:10:48We played a show there once where they had a sewage issue
00:10:53We're on the radio
00:10:55So you can imagine the pipe broke and sewage everywhere
00:10:58And Jim, the owner, thought it would be a great idea to take kitty litter and dump it all over the place
00:11:05So the sewer then became airborne and everybody at the show got sick
00:11:09Including all the bands
00:11:10It was great
00:11:11I think you were opening for us back then, right?
00:11:13Yeah, we were opening for Ken's solo act
00:11:16As I said
00:11:19I like the sound effects
00:11:21As I said, Al was in a band called The Bruisers
00:11:23And is it also true that he was hired the very first time?
00:11:27Hired?
00:11:28Well, I don't mean hired
00:11:29I mean brought on, accepted
00:11:31He did one audition
00:11:32It's still not been accepted, but I'm here
00:11:36But by virtue of that one audition?
00:11:38Yeah
00:11:39I'll tell you what happened
00:11:41If you want to hear my spin on it, okay?
00:11:43He tells a long story
00:11:44So I cut some wood
00:11:46I'll try to abbreviate it
00:11:48I basically
00:11:50He's getting his nap rag out
00:11:53I got
00:11:55I got
00:11:56I got
00:11:57I was on tour of The Bruisers
00:11:58And Blood for Blood
00:11:59Anybody in here remembers Blood for Blood?
00:12:01We were in Europe
00:12:02We came back from a very unsuccessful tour
00:12:06And I'm successful in the sense that we got to play for people
00:12:09But unsuccessful in the sense that I had to go and get another job
00:12:11And I had no money
00:12:12So nothing to show for it
00:12:13In the sense of my wife was looking at me like, uh-huh
00:12:17But she was always very supportive of me
00:12:20In her defense
00:12:22But to get on with this
00:12:23Basically the phone rang
00:12:24It was Kenny
00:12:25He said
00:12:26He said
00:12:27Did you hear what happened?
00:12:28I said
00:12:29I heard you guys got all sick and you dumped off the business tour
00:12:32And uh
00:12:33Next thing you know
00:12:35He's asking me to come down and just sing a couple of these new songs
00:12:38Because he says
00:12:39They're literally hitting the garage door opener
00:12:41They're hitting the down button before the door gets all the way open
00:12:44Because these people that are coming to try out are just terrible
00:12:46So
00:12:47I go down
00:12:48I try out
00:12:49I sing half
00:12:50I sing half a verse
00:12:51They throw me out of the room
00:12:52And I thought
00:12:53That didn't go very well
00:12:54I'll be getting back in my Toyota Tercel and driving home pretty soon
00:12:58And then Ken stuck his head out
00:12:59I don't think I got asked back in though
00:13:01Ken stuck his head out and said
00:13:02You want the job?
00:13:03It's yours
00:13:04And that was that
00:13:051 minute 23 seconds
00:13:07That was a fast story by Al Bach
00:13:09Thank you everybody
00:13:10Al
00:13:12A little bit of band trivia
00:13:13Do you remember what the song was you sang?
00:13:15Yeah it was 10 Years of Service
00:13:16Correct
00:13:17There you go
00:13:18He was coming in to sing with songs he had never heard
00:13:22Off our second record that we already wrote and were ready to record
00:13:26So there you have it
00:13:27There's a little history
00:13:28It is 93.3 WMMR
00:13:30We are here with the Dropkick Murphys
00:13:32I want to talk about the new record and the fact that it was recorded for the first time out of Boston
00:13:37But you really made a left turn in that you went to El Paso, Texas
00:13:41The studio is called Sonic Ranch
00:13:43It's about 30 miles east of El Paso I think along the US-Mexican border even
00:13:48And you obviously wanted to avoid distractions
00:13:51Family, you all have family and friends and a lot of stuff going on in Boston
00:13:55But what other things might have drawn you to that particular studio and that particular location?
00:14:01It was the desert, you know, the dry air, no I don't know
00:14:05There was a good studio and nobody around for miles and miles
00:14:11We needed a place that nobody could escape even if they were hitchhiking
00:14:14And that's what we accomplished
00:14:16We had 30 miles due west to get to El Paso
00:14:21And we were abutted the Mexican border and, you know, our phones
00:14:26When we could get cell service it was from Mexico
00:14:29So we all had high international roaming charges when we came home
00:14:33Even though we never left America
00:14:35But, you know, it just let us kind of be away and focus, you know
00:14:39Well, I want to talk about a few of the songs on the record
00:14:42We don't have time to go over them all
00:14:43It's a great album, by the way, and it will be out on Friday
00:14:46Really, really great
00:14:47But the first song is a single we've been playing, which is Blood
00:14:50And what's particularly cool is
00:14:54I think it was Tim that said
00:14:56We're still doing what we're known for doing
00:14:58But in a more sonically expanded manner
00:15:01And Tim, I don't know exactly what you mean
00:15:04Because you also added that it gave the band more space
00:15:07And a sonic expansion, if I read that quote correctly
00:15:11Yeah, I think...
00:15:13Oh, thank you
00:15:14Comfortable
00:15:19Musically, we worked on...
00:15:22I mean, we're known for...
00:15:25Sort of...
00:15:26Our songs are pretty rambunctious
00:15:27And sort of move along at a pretty fast pace and everything
00:15:30And, you know, I think we were listening to a lot of things like ACDC and stuff like that
00:15:37And realizing that the space between the notes seems just as important as the notes themselves, you know
00:15:43So I think we played with that aspect a little bit more as far as letting the music breathe a little bit more than we normally would
00:15:49And certainly to a good outcome, I think
00:15:57I mean, we're all really happy with these songs that are sort of a new progression of what the band sounds like, you know
00:16:04And do you credit that to El Paso and going to that particular location?
00:16:08Well, not necessarily because...
00:16:10Ken is waving them off
00:16:12I mean, sure, yeah
00:16:14We tend to button things up pretty good before we go into the studio in general
00:16:21But we most certainly let the overall vibe, if you will, of El Paso, you know, lend itself to what we were doing
00:16:30What else would you say about Blood, Ken?
00:16:33It's awesome
00:16:35No, this song's about basically the history of the band starting out at the Rat
00:16:39I know encompass in a two-and-a-half-minute song what, you know, what the band means to us
00:16:48And what all you guys mean to us and what you guys give back to us, you know
00:16:52Because to me, for most of us, it's not about the writing, the recording, any of that
00:16:56It's about doing this right here, you know, and meeting the people and playing live
00:17:00So, you know, it's about that experience
00:17:02We can relate with that at MMR
00:17:04We've been here for 48 years as a rock and roll radio station
00:17:07And that's pretty unusual
00:17:09Give it up for MMR, yeah
00:17:13I don't say that necessarily to boast
00:17:15I say that to thank you because it's the same dynamic
00:17:17Our audience, our listeners, have been kind enough to join us
00:17:20As you've had listeners join at various points in the progression of the band
00:17:25You know, various...
00:17:27This might be the first album for some future, you know, Dropkick Murphys fans
00:17:31So people have joined...
00:17:32Hold on, we've got one right here, hold on
00:17:34That's right
00:17:35What's your name, buddy?
00:17:36Keaton
00:17:37Keaton?
00:17:38Keaton, how old?
00:17:39I'm nine
00:17:40Keaton's nine, front row
00:17:43Nine years old, huh?
00:17:50So anyway, I mean, we acknowledge that great connection as well
00:17:54And for 20 years as a band, that's something special
00:17:56I love that you love your audience, we do the same
00:17:59I've been lucky enough to be on MMR for 35 years, which is a great blessing
00:18:03And...
00:18:04Thank you, but...
00:18:05You stopped when you were like 10?
00:18:06I did, yeah
00:18:07I'm 45 now
00:18:11But, it's very unusual in both my line of work as an individual DJ or for a rock and roll station
00:18:16BCN was a great station in Boston
00:18:18Sadly, you know, so many of them were around the country and most of them have fallen
00:18:22So, we get what you're talking about with that audience connection
00:18:26I want to go on to Rebels with a Cause
00:18:29First of all, on a song, and you haven't done this for a while
00:18:32Ken and Al are trading lead vocals
00:18:35And there's a line in there, a couple of lines that just grabbed me
00:18:40Talking about these kids who have heart
00:18:42You write, they were wretched, they were raw, they were tough and they were mean
00:18:46They were scared, they were cold, they were somewhere in between
00:18:49Remember what you see ain't what it seems
00:18:52So, give a kid a hand, lift him up, dust him off
00:18:57Many will stumble, others will be lost
00:19:00For all who failed, so many would succeed
00:19:02Don't be angry at the kids, be angry at the greed
00:19:05Some really great words in there about...
00:19:07Thank God you ran us through that because I was having a hard time remembering that verse
00:19:10We're gonna play that song
00:19:12We're gonna use that for the remix
00:19:14It's true, it's true
00:19:15I'll be your teleprompter
00:19:17Well, the song's directly related to the addiction struggle
00:19:23And talking about like, it's not always necessarily the kid that you think is a punk
00:19:29You know, a lot of times it's a guy who came home from the war
00:19:32And got lit up on Oxycontin for two years
00:19:35And you know, for an injury
00:19:36Or it's an athlete that blew his knee out
00:19:38And you know, got overprescribed
00:19:40And the next thing around, heroin
00:19:42And like I said, don't be angry at them
00:19:44Be angry with the greed of the pharmaceutical companies
00:19:47That kind of started this whole thing, you know, so...
00:19:51There's some really serious songs on the album
00:19:54There's a song that somewhat reminds me of your Christmas tune
00:19:57The Season's Upon Us
00:19:58The fifth song on the record is called First Class Loser
00:20:05And you write in there
00:20:07Have you ever had a family or a friend that drove you crazy?
00:20:10A foe or a neighbor who's obnoxious, rude or lazy?
00:20:13The type of guy you'd cross six lanes of traffic to avoid
00:20:18He's always got his hands out
00:20:21He's wickedly unemployed
00:20:22Just wicked, we don't say wickedly
00:20:24Wicked, wicked, wicked unemployed
00:20:26That's a Boston thing
00:20:28That's a Boston thing
00:20:29It's a Boston thing
00:20:30But it's so great because as I understand it
00:20:33You know, fans and friends have even come up to you
00:20:35Talking about the new album
00:20:37And you say, yeah, one is for you
00:20:38Track number five
00:20:39Check it out
00:20:40You're gonna really like it
00:20:41That we wrote just for you
00:20:43I actually took the wave file of the song
00:20:48And edited it and changed it to a bunch of my friends' names
00:20:52And wrote like the ballad of Paul Murphy
00:20:54The ballad of Bill Daley
00:20:56And I sent it to them and said
00:20:57Track five, it's about you
00:20:58And they went, you got my name in there
00:21:00You know, so
00:21:02Watch out
00:21:03If you get on our bad side
00:21:04We will write a song about you
00:21:06We're gonna pause here for an imaginary commercial
00:21:12We will be right back with the Dropkick Murphys
00:21:14Here at the Ardmore Music Hall
00:21:15Right after this
00:21:21And now, we're back with the Dropkick Murphys
00:21:27On MMR
00:21:28Dan and Al among others
00:21:30With us here
00:21:31It's such a great record
00:21:33I listened to it from beginning to end
00:21:35And it's got a great flow to it
00:21:37You've talked about the value
00:21:40And I think all of you believe in this
00:21:42Of an album
00:21:44Album's worth of material
00:21:45Something I really believe in
00:21:46We still play vinyl
00:21:47And I think every one of your records
00:21:49Has come out on vinyl
00:21:50But the value of the songs interconnecting with each other
00:21:56Speak to that if you would
00:21:57Because to me, that's everything
00:21:59It's not just the songs
00:22:00It's the interrelation of the songs
00:22:02It's the artwork on the record
00:22:04It's the things that connect it
00:22:05And make it a three-dimensional experience
00:22:07Well, the ritual of buying music
00:22:08Is kind of dead, isn't it?
00:22:09Or the way that we traditionally used to buy music
00:22:11Is dead
00:22:12In the sense that you used to get excited
00:22:14For said artists to come out
00:22:15There was no
00:22:16I'm talking way before there were any ripping sites
00:22:18Before they were able to download things
00:22:20So, I mean, everything's changed from when I was
00:22:23A hundred years ago when I was a kid
00:22:25And, you know, you'd get the record
00:22:29And you'd put it on
00:22:30You'd go home
00:22:31You'd listen to the whole thing
00:22:32You'd look at the line of notes
00:22:33There was that
00:22:34And the record
00:22:35The assembly of the songs
00:22:36There was a story
00:22:37There was a theme that ran through that
00:22:40And what the digital age has done
00:22:42And I understand the convenience of it
00:22:43But what that's done is
00:22:45It's killed music and how we get it
00:22:49Because now people aren't concerned with
00:22:51They're not concerned with how they're
00:22:53They're, you know
00:22:54They're not concerned with the arrangement of the songs
00:22:56They're just
00:22:57They're just
00:22:58Oh, I'm gonna listen to
00:22:59I don't really like that song
00:23:00They're not giving any
00:23:01They're not taking time
00:23:02To, like, listen to things
00:23:03I mean
00:23:04I go back to when I was listening
00:23:05I go back to when I was listening to music
00:23:07And I think about
00:23:08I think about
00:23:09Songs that I discovered
00:23:11Six months into owning that record
00:23:12And being like
00:23:13That
00:23:14That was listening to music
00:23:15That was like
00:23:16That was like
00:23:17That was what
00:23:18What it was
00:23:19But today
00:23:20Everything's disposable
00:23:21Everything's just
00:23:22You know
00:23:23Chew it, spit it out
00:23:24And it's hard to
00:23:25It's hard to stay grounded
00:23:26In that environment
00:23:27I think
00:23:28For musicians
00:23:29That are actively trying to
00:23:31You know
00:23:32Come across with their art
00:23:33You know what I mean
00:23:34It's
00:23:35I think we're trying to figure it out
00:23:36And when I say we
00:23:37I think
00:23:38Musicians
00:23:39Are trying to figure out different ways
00:23:40I know that
00:23:41When we
00:23:42Sent this particular
00:23:43Disc out this time
00:23:44Get reviewed
00:23:45And listened to
00:23:46By people in the media
00:23:47That there's no way
00:23:48That they could rip the thing
00:23:49I mean
00:23:50My buddy out in California
00:23:51He rips all the time
00:23:52And he's got two sights
00:23:53He's like
00:23:54I'll go on there right now
00:23:55And I just haven't ripped it
00:23:56Because you're my buddy
00:23:57And he went on there
00:23:58And he's like
00:23:59They're not on there
00:24:00And I'm like
00:24:01That's because we did some different things this time
00:24:02So
00:24:03We got the mafia involved
00:24:04Well this has been an Albaa tirade
00:24:05Brought to you by WMMI
00:24:06Brought to you by Starbucks
00:24:08He gets passionate
00:24:09He's so passionate about vinyl
00:24:11He doesn't even have it on his phone
00:24:12He carries a record player around with him
00:24:14It's
00:24:15It's
00:24:16It's nice that people are clamoring for music
00:24:18To the point where they need it immediately
00:24:20That's
00:24:21That's nice
00:24:22You know that they can go online
00:24:23And listen to it immediately
00:24:24And everything like that
00:24:25But there's something to be said
00:24:26But for the tangible record
00:24:27You know
00:24:28Like Al was saying
00:24:29I mean
00:24:30And even back when
00:24:31When I was a kid
00:24:32And records had
00:24:33Started
00:24:34Started to
00:24:35Sort of be phased out
00:24:36It's nice that they're back again
00:24:37But when CDs were big
00:24:39Even getting that
00:24:40And looking at the liner notes
00:24:41And everything like that
00:24:42Was a giant thing
00:24:43You know
00:24:44You're free here with the Dropkick Murphys
00:24:46I wanted to ask you about
00:24:47One more song on the record
00:24:48And a very moving one to me
00:24:50Certainly though
00:24:51More so to you
00:24:52Because you're from that great city
00:24:53And the song is just numbers
00:24:55It's 4-15-13
00:24:57And it references the Boston Marathon bombing
00:25:01And really does so in a passionate way
00:25:04You know
00:25:05You talk about the various different kinds of people
00:25:07That get affected by tragedies
00:25:09And it's really well written
00:25:12You know
00:25:13From every different lifestyle perspective
00:25:15Of people who just came out to enjoy something
00:25:18And it just makes me think of all the senseless
00:25:20And insane terrorist attacks
00:25:22From you know
00:25:239-11 to Sandy Hook
00:25:25To the gay club in Orlando
00:25:27To the rock club over in Paris
00:25:29And people that are just going about their lives
00:25:32Just like you speak of in this song
00:25:35But to me there's this positive thing
00:25:38That in every tragedy
00:25:40Whether natural disaster or a man made one
00:25:43You see these stories of heroism
00:25:45And I don't know if you
00:25:46I wouldn't surprise me
00:25:47If you guys have met these guys
00:25:48But there was a young man
00:25:4927 years old
00:25:50Named Jeffrey Bauman
00:25:52And he was there to
00:25:53Or Bauman
00:25:54He was there to watch the run
00:25:55He was across the street
00:25:56From another guy
00:25:57With a cowboy hat on
00:25:58Carlos Arredondo
00:26:00And when the bomb went off
00:26:02Or one of them went off
00:26:03It blew both his kids legs off
00:26:05This other gentleman
00:26:07Carlos
00:26:08Ran across the street
00:26:09Now he was
00:26:10Suffering all kinds of things himself
00:26:12His
00:26:13First son had died in Iraq
00:26:15The victim of sniper fire
00:26:17His second son suffered from depression
00:26:19And had taken his own life
00:26:20He was there to support National Guard people
00:26:23Who were running
00:26:24In the marathon
00:26:25And he was giving out little flags
00:26:27So he was there for this great reason
00:26:29And he'd gone through this transformation
00:26:30About wanting a peaceful world
00:26:32He sees this violent act happen
00:26:34Runs across the street
00:26:35Gets his kid
00:26:36Helps apply tourniquets to him
00:26:38And there's a very famous photo
00:26:39Of him pushing the kid in a wheelchair
00:26:42And some of the photos
00:26:44You can clearly see
00:26:45He doesn't have legs
00:26:46He's pale as a sheet
00:26:47But he survived
00:26:48The kid is a miracle
00:26:49The gentleman who saved him is a miracle
00:26:52And after the event
00:26:53You guys went and visited people
00:26:55Did you ever meet those two?
00:26:56Oh yeah, Carlos is my boy
00:26:58He's
00:26:59Him and his wife are awesome
00:27:00He was like
00:27:01That spirit of like
00:27:02Didn't think
00:27:03Ran towards the explosions
00:27:05You know
00:27:06And I think Carlos
00:27:07Kind of sums up
00:27:08You know
00:27:09Like someone who could have gone the other way
00:27:10You know
00:27:11But he went towards it
00:27:12And especially with all he'd been through
00:27:14I know Jeff Bauman
00:27:15We went and visited all the victims in the hospital
00:27:17With the help of amazing fan base
00:27:20We raised over $500,000 for the victims
00:27:22So
00:27:23And we
00:27:25You know
00:27:26The one fund
00:27:27Which was the big fund
00:27:29That raised really lots of money
00:27:31That took a long time to be distributed
00:27:32So we were distributing money quickly
00:27:34Before these people had any other distributions
00:27:37But I will say this
00:27:38You'd stand outside of these hospital rooms
00:27:40Trying to get yourself like
00:27:41Pumped up to go in and like cheer these people up
00:27:44And you'd leave and go
00:27:45Wait
00:27:46They just cheered me up
00:27:47How did that happen?
00:27:48They were all so positive
00:27:49So
00:27:50You know
00:27:51Just blew our minds
00:27:52Well Jeffrey
00:27:53I mean he went on to get artificial legs
00:27:55And be really a positive role model
00:27:58And get engaged I believe
00:27:59And I mean every time I've heard him interviewed
00:28:02He's just this picture positivity
00:28:03And he has every reason to go
00:28:05Fuck it you know
00:28:06I mean the world is screwed
00:28:07We'll edit that
00:28:08But he
00:28:11In the midst of this horror
00:28:13He didn't
00:28:14Nor did Carlos
00:28:15And I mean they're just such great examples
00:28:17Of even in the worst of times
00:28:18The best of times
00:28:19And this album
00:28:20References moments
00:28:21That are the worst of times
00:28:22Be it you know
00:28:23Addiction, the opioid problem
00:28:25This violence
00:28:26But it also references
00:28:27You know
00:28:28With a song that you opened with
00:28:29You'll never walk alone
00:28:30The hopefulness
00:28:31Of not giving up
00:28:32And carrying on
00:28:33And both sides are reflected in this record
00:28:36But I always like to come away
00:28:37With the hopeful side
00:28:38Well if you don't
00:28:40You're a real bummer
00:28:41If you don't kind of put it to the hopeful side
00:28:43Because I mean
00:28:44It's hard though
00:28:45It's harder to be positive
00:28:46No
00:28:47You really have to work at it
00:28:48Absolutely
00:28:49And you know
00:28:50Speaking of particularly 4, 15, 13
00:28:53To find the positiveness
00:28:54And to make that song
00:28:55That was such a challenge
00:28:56In the sense
00:28:57That we didn't want it to be too somber
00:29:00Because we didn't want it
00:29:01To kind of remind people in a negative way
00:29:03Obviously didn't want to make it a raging anthem
00:29:06Because you know
00:29:07It was diff
00:29:08So we had to find the middle ground
00:29:11Both lyrically and musically
00:29:13And I think that's what we try to do with the whole album
00:29:15But that's what that ebb and flow of an album is
00:29:18You know
00:29:19You hit something serious
00:29:20And then you write a song like First Class Loser
00:29:22And everyone says
00:29:23These guys are just a bunch of knuckleheads
00:29:26You've got to have some fun with it
00:29:28The album is 11 short stories of pain and glory
00:29:30It's for sale here
00:29:31And you guys get to have it before anybody else
00:29:33So I actually want every single of the couple hundred people
00:29:38That are here
00:29:39And even if you came with someone
00:29:40I want you both to buy a record on the way out
00:29:42Because this is a hard working band
00:29:44You know
00:29:45They work their asses off
00:29:46They tour all the time
00:29:47They have families
00:29:48They have regular lives
00:29:49And yet they always give back to charity
00:29:51Which I love
00:29:52And your charity in 2009
00:29:54As I mentioned in the intro
00:29:55The Collada Fund
00:29:56Is very active in Boston
00:29:58And there's been activity here in Philly
00:30:01And you'd wanted to mention something that's coming up, Ken
00:30:04Yeah, we have our first annual friendship dinner
00:30:07The Collada Fund's having down here
00:30:09At the Chop House
00:30:10Over across the river into Jersey
00:30:12It is Tuesday, January 17th
00:30:15We're going to have a dinner
00:30:16Open bar
00:30:17Three-course steak
00:30:19Steaks, everything you want
00:30:20Like the...
00:30:21You know
00:30:22This is for the real...
00:30:23Vegetarian food for me
00:30:24Vegetarian food for you
00:30:27Philadelphia Eagle Connor Barwin
00:30:29Is going to be one of our honorees
00:30:31Because he does a lot of great work with charity
00:30:33And Ray Dittinger
00:30:35Hall of Fame journalist
00:30:37Cover of the Eagles
00:30:38He's going to be the speaker
00:30:39And he has a new book
00:30:40Everybody who attends
00:30:41Gets an autographed version of the book
00:30:44So you can...
00:30:46There's a Collada Fund table here
00:30:47If you want to attend
00:30:48To look into that
00:30:49You can see them
00:30:50Or if you're listening on the radio
00:30:51You can email
00:30:52Kate.McLeod
00:30:54At Collada Fund.org
00:30:56I'm not going to spell it
00:30:57You've got to figure it out
00:30:58Is there a website?
00:30:59No, no, Kathleen
00:31:00C-A-T-H-L-E-E-N
00:31:03Dot M-C-C-L-O-U-D
00:31:07At Collada Fund.org
00:31:09Which is...
00:31:10I'm not spelling that
00:31:11You've got to figure that out
00:31:12Google it
00:31:13It's such a great cause
00:31:14But anyway
00:31:15Philadelphia has welcomed us
00:31:17With open arms
00:31:18As a band
00:31:19And then when we started the charity
00:31:20And you're just like Boston
00:31:22So it feels natural
00:31:23And the charity benefits
00:31:26We donate to local children's charities
00:31:33Veterans charities
00:31:34And substance abuse programs
00:31:35And you know
00:31:36It's been great here in Philadelphia
00:31:38It's been great in Boston
00:31:40And we thank you guys all
00:31:41For helping us keep this stuff going
00:31:43You know?
00:31:44So check out that dinner
00:31:46Two more things before we let you go
00:31:48First of all, another fake commercial
00:31:50We'll be right back with more
00:31:52With the Dropkick Murphys
00:31:53On ID33 WMMR
00:31:55It's a great audience here
00:32:00In Ardmore, Pennsylvania
00:32:02We're back with the Dropkick Murphys
00:32:03Two last things
00:32:10One is the fact that you guys got
00:32:13The Robert F. Kennedy Award
00:32:14You're from Boston
00:32:15The Kennedy family from Boston
00:32:17And you received this award
00:32:19At the Kennedy Center
00:32:20In Boston
00:32:22That had to have been
00:32:23A moment
00:32:24Of all the acknowledgements
00:32:25You've gotten
00:32:26And there have been a number
00:32:27What memories come to mind
00:32:28When you think of that?
00:32:29Well, I mean
00:32:30You know, obviously
00:32:31The Kennedys are
00:32:32Revered in Boston
00:32:34As everywhere
00:32:35But
00:32:36Or at least
00:32:37You know
00:32:38JFK and Robert
00:32:39Anyway
00:32:40There's mixed opinions
00:32:41On the rest of the family sometimes
00:32:42But
00:32:43I don't know them
00:32:44Hey
00:32:45He did do a lot of good
00:32:46He did
00:32:47He worked on both sides of the aisle
00:32:48He helped a lot of people
00:32:50But you know, arguably
00:32:51You know, Robert Kennedy
00:32:52Would have gone on to
00:32:53Bigger and better things
00:32:54Than his brother
00:32:55And you know
00:32:56He did a lot to give back
00:32:58And they started this
00:33:00Robert F. Kennedy Action Corps
00:33:02To kind of just
00:33:03Keep his legacy going
00:33:05And every year
00:33:06They award some people
00:33:07And they gave it to us
00:33:08And it was like
00:33:09Wow, you know
00:33:10That was a big one
00:33:11You know
00:33:12At the Kennedy Center
00:33:13At the Kennedy Center
00:33:14Yeah
00:33:15Or at the Kennedy Library
00:33:16Last thing I want to ask you about
00:33:18Is your friendship
00:33:19With Bruce Springsteen
00:33:20Boston boys
00:33:21Hooking up with the Jersey guy
00:33:23And
00:33:25So many times
00:33:26You've hung with him
00:33:27Or he's joined you on stage
00:33:28Or you've joined him
00:33:29But one of the times
00:33:30Early on
00:33:31I think it was on
00:33:32His working on a dream tour
00:33:33And was it the whole band
00:33:34That was on stage with him
00:33:35Doing Glory Days
00:33:36Or
00:33:37A bunch of us
00:33:38Yeah
00:33:39It was a few of us
00:33:40But yeah
00:33:41That was unbelievable
00:33:42We got
00:33:43Ken called me at
00:33:44I think
00:33:45One in the morning
00:33:46The night before
00:33:47Springsteen did two nights
00:33:48At the garden
00:33:49Ken went
00:33:50This the old Boston garden?
00:33:51No, not
00:33:52No, the new one
00:33:53The new thing
00:33:54Ken went as a spectator
00:33:55The first night
00:33:56And then
00:33:57After the show
00:33:58At about 1am
00:33:59I got a phone call
00:34:00Saying
00:34:01Learn this song
00:34:02He's got this
00:34:03Irish-y song
00:34:04Called American Land
00:34:05It came out on an album
00:34:06Called Wrecking Ball
00:34:07A few years ago
00:34:08He wanted us to come and join him
00:34:10And
00:34:11So
00:34:12I didn't sleep that night
00:34:13Obviously
00:34:14And I don't think
00:34:15Jeff did either
00:34:16And then
00:34:17The next day
00:34:18We went down for soundcheck
00:34:19And
00:34:20He was very welcoming
00:34:21And everything
00:34:22And his guys were all super nice
00:34:23And we
00:34:24We ran through it
00:34:25And
00:34:26Once
00:34:27Twice
00:34:28Once
00:34:29There's a funny story
00:34:30To that one actually
00:34:31So
00:34:32He didn't actually say
00:34:33What song he wanted us to
00:34:34But
00:34:35I kind of figured
00:34:36It would be that one
00:34:37So I went home
00:34:38And I'm saying
00:34:39How would dropkicks do it?
00:34:40I said
00:34:41Well I would sing the first line
00:34:42I'd sing the second
00:34:43I would sing the third
00:34:44I'd sing the fourth
00:34:45And I come up to soundcheck
00:34:46He goes
00:34:47Okay Ken
00:34:48We're gonna do American Land
00:34:49He goes
00:34:50I'll sing lines one and two
00:34:51You sing three and four
00:34:52I was like
00:34:53Because I had learned two and four
00:34:54Not three and four
00:34:55So we go through it
00:34:56And I kind of
00:34:57Bumble my way through it
00:34:58And I said
00:34:59Bruce you mind if
00:35:01I do two and four
00:35:02And three and four
00:35:03These guys are like
00:35:04Did you just tell Bruce
00:35:05How you were gonna do a song
00:35:06I don't remember the lyrics
00:35:08So but listen
00:35:09This is getting awkward
00:35:10Because you know
00:35:11We gotta say
00:35:12And this is probably
00:35:13A good time to do it
00:35:14And you don't even know
00:35:15About this Pierre
00:35:16But we got a special guest
00:35:17In the house
00:35:18Ladies and gentlemen
00:35:19Give it up
00:35:20Suddenly
00:35:22We're Will
00:35:23Timbal in your middle
00:35:27And in the middle
00:35:28You better watch out
00:35:30You better beware
00:35:33And I can come
00:35:35With you
00:35:36Goodbye
00:35:37Good luck
00:35:38They said people like you screw everything up
00:35:44If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:35:50Straight from the heart till the job is done
00:35:55If you want it now, then here it comes
00:36:01If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:36:08They beat us down, but we survived
00:36:23Taught down a school and made up lies
00:36:29But we don't listen, we do what we do
00:36:34We don't care about them, we care about you
00:36:40If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:36:46Straight from the heart till the job is done
00:36:50If you want it now, then here it comes
00:36:56If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:37:02We're coming for ya, we'll kick down the door
00:37:30Be careful what you ask for, cause I make it more
00:37:36We keep it loud, we don't turn down
00:37:42We're coming back, we're coming back
00:37:44We're coming back, we're taking over this town
00:37:48If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:38:00If you want blood, we'll give you some
00:38:02Straight from the heart till the job is done
00:38:08If you want it now, then here it comes
00:38:12If you want it now, then here it comes
00:38:16If you want it, we'll give you some
00:38:18If you want it, we'll give you some
00:38:24Blood, blood
00:38:28Blood, blood
00:38:32Blood, blood
00:38:34Blood, blood
00:38:38Die!
00:38:52We hadn't thought about the harmonica mic situation.
00:38:59We're gonna be out in a few months in Bethlehem
00:39:03starting our tour at the Sands Casino, if anyone's coming.
00:39:08Never been there.
00:39:11But I'm sure I'll leave with less than I came with.
00:39:15All right, so this is the second song off the album.
00:39:18It's called Rebels with the Cars.
00:39:21Yeah, that's what it's called.
00:39:24Ready?
00:39:25Two.
00:39:26Yeah.
00:39:27One, two, three.
00:39:38Good night.
00:39:39Yeah.
00:39:40Good night.
00:39:41Good night.
00:39:44At the point of conversation
00:39:49He was read some new relation
00:39:50In the corner he came from
00:39:52The coming he keeps
00:39:53She was from the country
00:39:55Far from the city
00:39:56They shared one love
00:39:57They were destined for defeat
00:39:58The rich in every trouble
00:40:00She was sick and she was lost
00:40:01Searching for an answer
00:40:03Rebels with the cost
00:40:04Doing what they do
00:40:05To get what they need
00:40:07Life was cheap
00:40:08There were no guarantees
00:40:09Dead end kids
00:40:13You don't want them
00:40:14You don't need them
00:40:15And you'll always find a reason
00:40:16When you need to write them off
00:40:17Dead end kids
00:40:19You can take them
00:40:19You can leave them
00:40:20You say if they never listen
00:40:21You say they'd be better off
00:40:23But we've had laid them go
00:40:25We knew it from the start
00:40:28Hey kids
00:40:30You got high
00:40:32They were wretched
00:40:37They were raw
00:40:37They were tough
00:40:38And they were mean
00:40:39They were scared
00:40:39They were cold
00:40:40They were somewhere in between
00:40:41Looking for a chance
00:40:43From someone who believed
00:40:44Remember what you see
00:40:45Ain't always what it seems
00:40:47So give a kid a hand
00:40:48Lift them up
00:40:49And dust them off
00:40:50Many will stumble
00:40:51Others will be lost
00:40:52For all who fail
00:40:53So many will succeed
00:40:55Don't be angry with the kids
00:40:56Be angry at the creed
00:40:58Dead end kids
00:41:02You don't want them
00:41:02You don't need them
00:41:03You'll always find a reason
00:41:04When you need to write them off
00:41:06Dead end kids
00:41:07You can take them
00:41:08You can leave them
00:41:08You said they never listen
00:41:10You said they'd be better off
00:41:11But we've had laid them go
00:41:13We knew it from the start
00:41:16Hey kid
00:41:17You got high
00:41:20Dead end kids
00:41:36You don't want them
00:41:37You don't need them
00:41:38Dead end kids
00:41:39You'll always write them off
00:41:40Dead end kids
00:41:42You can take them
00:41:42You can leave them
00:41:43Dead end kids
00:41:44You said they'd be better off
00:41:46Dead end kids
00:41:47You don't want them
00:41:48You don't need them
00:41:48And you'll always find a reason
00:41:50When you need to write them off
00:41:51Dead end kids
00:41:52You can take them
00:41:53You can leave them
00:41:54You said they'd never listen
00:41:55You said they'd be better off
00:41:56Dead end kids
00:41:58You don't want them
00:41:58You don't need them
00:41:59And you'll always find a reason
00:42:00When you need to write them off
00:42:02Dead end kids
00:42:03You can take them
00:42:04You can leave them
00:42:04You said they'd never listen
00:42:05You said they'd be better off
00:42:07But we've had laid than you
00:42:09We knew it from the start
00:42:12Hey, kid, you got hot!
00:42:28You guys are awesome.
00:42:35All right, let's keep this moving.
00:42:38Moving.
00:42:41Like Mariah Carey on New Year's Eve.
00:42:44Oh, man.
00:42:48I mean, we screw up like that all the time.
00:42:50We just don't have a track behind us to fix it.
00:42:52But does it fix it? No, it makes it worse.
00:42:58Best television ever.
00:43:01She's over it. She doesn't care.
00:43:03She probably sold more records because of it.
00:43:05One time we were doing the Today Show and came to Boston and we were doing a song and Matt Lowell was interviewing me and I had like the flu.
00:43:15And all I could think of is like in my head and while he's asking me questions, don't throw up on Matt, don't throw up on Matt, don't throw up on Matt.
00:43:22And he was asking me questions and I was like, huh? You know, in retrospect, I should have thrown up on Matt. We would have blown up.
00:43:29All right, this one's about the early days growing up before all the trouble started.
00:43:38When we were young, we had it all. We had the sun, the moon, the stars. We had it all. We had the Lord, and we were like, all right. We never had it all.
00:43:59When we were young we had it all
00:44:04We had the sun, the moon, the stars
00:44:08We didn't venture very far
00:44:11We didn't go
00:44:13When people drove in fancy cars
00:44:19We swam in pools but they weren't ours
00:44:22We weren't rich yet but no one told us
00:44:26We didn't know
00:44:28Yeah, when we were young
00:44:35Yeah, when we were young
00:44:42We had it all
00:44:44When we were young
00:44:46We had a ball
00:44:48When we were young
00:44:49We had it all
00:44:51When we were young
00:44:53We didn't know about girls of ours
00:44:59We stole candy in occasional cars
00:45:02Playing stickball, thus to dawn
00:45:06That's what we knew
00:45:08You had too much, so I took your bike
00:45:13I hated your guts, but I wanted your life
00:45:17Your mom was fine, you went to fancy school
00:45:20You had lots of shit, but you still weren't cool
00:45:24Yeah, when we were young
00:45:29Yeah, when we were young, we had it all
00:45:39When we were young, we had a ball
00:45:42When we were young, we had it all
00:45:46When we were young
00:45:50Alright, coming up, I'm gonna let you sing a chorus here
00:45:54In NMR, all by yourself, alright
00:45:56And I think you can handle it
00:45:58Cause looking at you, except for this guy
00:46:00You're all a bunch of old bastards, so
00:46:02You ready? Ready?
00:46:05Yeah, when we were young
00:46:10Yeah, when we were young
00:46:17Yeah, when we were young
00:46:24Yeah, when we were young
00:46:31We had it all
00:46:33When we were young, we had a ball
00:46:37When we were young, we had it all
00:46:41When we were young
00:46:47When we were young, we had a ball
00:46:52When we were young, we had it all
00:46:55When we were young
00:46:57Thank you, thank you.
00:47:17You guys having a good time?
00:47:21Well, that's good.
00:47:27Hey, Pete, I put this other mic, I don't know where you are, but I put this other mic,
00:47:37the recording's getting the background vocals, but the people on here and the background vocals.
00:47:41So, now we get that mic, so it'll be all good.
00:47:48Are you ready to pick things up a little, liven it up a little?
00:47:57I had a hat when I came in, I hung it on the rack.
00:48:16I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:48:23I'll break somebody's back.
00:48:27I'll have a hat when I go out, I'll break somebody's back.
00:48:49I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am, and I don't want to shout, but I had a hat when I came in.
00:48:57I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:49:02Casey kept on shouting, boys, they couldn't keep him quiet.
00:49:05Someone phoned the cops up to come and stop the riot.
00:49:08Two cops rushed into the room, but Casey laid them out.
00:49:11I fired them through the window.
00:49:13They both heard Casey shout.
00:49:14I had a hat when I came in, I hung it on the rack.
00:49:17I'll have a hat when I go out, I'll break somebody's back.
00:49:21I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am, and I don't want to shout, but I had a hat when I came in.
00:49:28I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:49:30I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:49:31I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am, and I don't want to shout, but I had a hat when I came in.
00:49:47I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:49:55Casey kept on shouting, boys, they'll one-eyed Patty Flynn.
00:50:01Socked me in the whiskers with a great big rolling pin.
00:50:07And I put Casey senseless.
00:50:11It was an awful clown.
00:50:14As he lay there unconscious, Casey shouted out.
00:50:17I had a hat when I came in, I hung it on the rack.
00:50:20I'll have a hat when I go out, I'll break somebody's back.
00:50:24I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am, and I don't want to shout, but I had a hat when I came in.
00:50:30I'll have a hat when I go out.
00:50:34I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am.
00:50:41I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am.
00:50:47I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am.
00:50:52I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am.
00:50:58I'm a peaceful, loving man, I am.
00:51:08Oh, yeah.
00:51:15So, if you have the record, if you get the record today,
00:51:18hopefully you know all the songs when we play in Bethlehem,
00:51:20and we'll all have a good time.
00:51:22And, and, can't officially announce it yet,
00:51:26but we're coming back to Philly in the summer.
00:51:29And it's going to be something special.
00:51:32It's going to be something big.
00:51:34And we're not telling you, Scott, stop prying.
00:51:36We can't release it.
00:51:39Here's our old friend, Scott.
00:51:40It is, it is Smash Mouth.
00:51:42You're right, it's Smash Mouth.
00:51:42He says, you can just tell me, who are you touring with this summer?
00:51:45The guy with the, you could not keep a secret.
00:51:55Where's Bicycle Shorts?
00:51:58No, no, where is he, though?
00:52:01Pierre will be the first to know, he'll tell you.
00:52:02Oh, good.
00:52:03I got something for him.
00:52:06All right, so.
00:52:07Throat Punch.
00:52:07We got two songs up.
00:52:08We're going to play one, uh, one more, uh, new one.
00:52:12Then we're going to close with Rose Tattoo.
00:52:13So, uh, you can have a start.
00:52:16And then we're going to get the hell out of here!
00:52:21All right.
00:52:22You ready?
00:52:25Yeah?
00:52:26Yeah.
00:52:26Yeah.
00:52:26You got any clappers in here?
00:52:35Come on.
00:52:40No clappers over there?
00:52:42I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, some days are long, some days I'm weak, some days I'm strong.
00:53:02I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way.
00:53:10I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, but my heart is so much higher.
00:53:24I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way, some days I'm paying my way.
00:53:33I'm city streets, dead in roads and no one sees
00:53:38And I'm proud to be a fighter
00:53:45Don't shut me out, don't hold me down
00:53:54I'm right here, I'll be around
00:53:57I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way
00:54:00Some days I slow, some days fly by
00:54:06Some days I laugh, some days I cry
00:54:09I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way
00:54:13I'm paying my way, I'm paying my way
00:54:25But my hopes are so much higher
00:54:32Don't count me out, I'm a survivor
00:54:38I chase these dreams down city streets
00:54:43Dead in roads and no one sees
00:54:46And I'm proud to be a fighter
00:54:55Oh
00:55:00When I look back and see your side
00:55:13When I look hard into your eyes
00:55:15When I look hard into your eyes
00:55:29When I take stock of what I've done
00:55:32I think about how far I've come
00:55:37And my hopes are so much higher
00:55:43Don't count me out, I'm a survivor
00:55:50And my hopes are so much higher
00:55:56And I'm proud to be a fighter

00:57:45The pictures tell the story
00:58:10This life had many shades
00:58:12I'd wake up every morning
00:58:14I'd wake up every morning
00:58:14And before I'd start each day
00:58:16I'd take a drag from last night's cigarette
00:58:18That smoldered in its tray
00:58:20Down a little something
00:58:23Then be on my way
00:58:25I traveled far and wide
00:58:31I was guided by a compass
00:58:36I saw beauty to the north
00:58:38I drew the tales of many lines
00:58:40Through all the faces of my own
00:58:42I had these memories all around me
