00:00Hey, ladies and gentlemen, we got my girl in the building, man.
00:02Oh, man, she's a superstar. Superstar for sure.
00:05All the talent. She's an actress, she's a writer, and she's a singer.
00:09Coco Jones, welcome to the D.
00:11Hey, how you doing?
00:12I'm doing good. How are you, Coco? Life is good for you right now.
00:15Life is great. I'm learning a lot.
00:18I am experiencing a lot of new things.
00:20It kind of feels like deja vu, though, in a way,
00:22because, you know, I've been at this for a long time,
00:24but I'm really, really grateful for the journey,
00:27and I feel like everything that's happening now, it's at the right time.
00:32Well, let's talk about the beginning, actually.
00:34How did you get a part of Disney, for one?
00:36Honestly, auditioning.
00:37I mean, I was raised in Nashville, Tennessee,
00:40and so there was a lot of country music opportunities,
00:43but I think I just would take any opportunity,
00:46whether it was background acting, one line,
00:49and, you know, little by little, you get better opportunities,
00:52so really just auditioning.
00:54So you did that, and then the Fresh Prince reboot on Peacock.
00:57How did that come about?
00:58Auditioning, honestly.
01:00At the time, I had new acting management,
01:03so I had never really had acting management.
01:05I'd had agents, but I had acting management at the time,
01:09and they really pressed for me to do the audition,
01:11and I kind of wasn't sure it was right for me
01:13because I didn't know what a reimagining was.
01:15I thought they were wanting the same look of the original Hillary,
01:18and I don't look like the original Hillary,
01:19so I was kind of apprehensive to do it,
01:21but I auditioned.
01:23I didn't think much of it because you kind of, as an actor,
01:25you don't get too much hope into things,
01:27and then I got a call.
01:28Got a call back?
01:29I got the, yeah.
01:30So the chemistry between all y'all is just so awesome.
01:32Yeah.
01:33How much of that character actually, like you in real life?
01:36I mean, me and Hillary, I think, have a lot of similarities,
01:39especially knowing what they wanted me to do with the character
01:41was to really make it my own.
01:43I feel like this is my first job where I wasn't put in any box.
01:46Like, whatever inclinations I had for the character,
01:50they were like, go, run with it.
01:51What else?
01:51Tell us, you know, like kind of make it feel more grounded.
01:54So I think we're very similar.
01:56She's a boss.
01:56She's an influencer.
01:58She's trying to, you know, create her own brand,
02:00and I feel her.
02:01I very much do feel her.
02:02That's what you're doing, too.
02:02I mind this music, yeah.
02:03Yeah, pretty much.
02:04So, you know, I'm torn between Demarcus and Jazzy.
02:08I'm screaming.
02:10I cannot.
02:11The amount, you guys don't even know how many people
02:14tell me these same things every day,
02:15and I'd be like, y'all.
02:16I'm pulling for the underdog.
02:18I'm simply just acting.
02:19I'm just the employee.
02:21I'm doing my stuff.
02:21I know, but you're doing so well.
02:23I hope the writers put you and Jazzy together.
02:26It's that kiss that y'all had.
02:27Like you mentioned, too, it's that kiss.
02:29You know what I'm saying?
02:30If she was in love with Demarcus,
02:31she wouldn't have kissed Jazzy like that.
02:32Oh, my God.
02:33I'm crying.
02:34I'm crying.
02:34I'm just doing my job, y'all.
02:36Just doing my job.
02:36So the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the reboot,
02:39going on to season three.
02:40Yeah, we just did season three, yeah.
02:41You're about to be season four.
02:43So did you have any idea it'll be like season one,
02:46two, and three?
02:46It's really taking off.
02:47I had no idea.
02:49And I think, honestly, in this time in the world,
02:51you can't really expect for people to consistently come back.
02:55It's just such a so much content, moving on.
02:58One day things are trending.
02:59The next day they're irrelevant.
03:00It's just such an up and down culture.
03:02So to even have people's attention consistently
03:05is like an amazing gift that's very rare.
03:08But you know they're going to watch you.
03:09You're beautiful.
03:09Well, thank you.
03:10I mean, that don't mean nothing.
03:11There's pretty girls out there.
03:13Yeah, you've got to have something quality content
03:15that's worth people coming back.
03:17And I think the writers do a great job
03:18of keeping everybody on the edge of their seats.
03:20And speaking of which, Coco,
03:22you're not only just beautiful, you're so talented.
03:25So we're talking about you got the Soul Train Awards.
03:28They were coming in.
03:30Ladies and gentlemen, the winner is Coco Jones,
03:32Soul Train Awards, NCAA Awards, BET Awards,
03:36and, of course, the Grammy.
03:37This last year has been,
03:39how has it been like world winning for you?
03:40Describe the emotions you've been feeling.
03:43I think, honestly, it's a relief
03:45because a lot of the time nobody's checking for you.
03:49You know, you're doing a lot of work behind the scenes
03:52without the cameras, without the press,
03:54without the, you know, virality and the people that care.
03:57So I think it's a relief when you get that payoff
03:59and when you get those acknowledgements
04:01and such prestigious awards
04:02because I've been doing this since I was nine.
04:05You know, it's just now that it's my time.
04:08So when did you realize you wanted to be a professional singer?
04:09I'm going to really go hard, hard in.
04:11Yeah, 9, 10.
04:129, 10, really?
04:13I told my parents, I'm like, I was playing basketball
04:16and that was like my hobby.
04:17That was my thing.
04:18That was my passion.
04:19And then I started, you know, singing at talent shows
04:22and singing competitions.
04:23And I just could not, I couldn't top that feeling.
04:26So that's when I was like, okay,
04:27I want to do this seriously, you know?
04:28Your dad was a good NFL player, played in Super Bowl.
04:31Yeah.
04:32So I'm sure you got that competitive spirit from him too.
04:34Definitely.
04:35Both of my parents actually have taught me a lot.
04:37My mom ran multiple businesses and she's my business manager now.
04:40So she teaches me a lot of the business perspective,
04:43being a successful businesswoman.
04:45And my dad, of course, is that athlete, that, you know, tenacity,
04:49you know, just pushing past uncomfortability to get to your goals.
04:53Hey, so I'm looking at two on Facebook and social media.
04:55A lot of women are gravitating towards you here in the city of Detroit.
04:58I told them I got an interview with Coco Jones.
05:01They're like, oh, I love Coco.
05:02I'm always hearing good stuff about Coco Jones.
05:05I guess it was your music when I See You first came out.
05:08Describe what is that song all about?
05:10I mean, it's really about what everyone feels,
05:13which is that desire for love
05:15and the knowing that this person is comfortable
05:19but not compatible all the way, you know?
05:22And so that push and pull of like,
05:24I love this person for how they make me feel,
05:26but I also hate the way that they make me feel, you know?
05:29And I feel like it's such a common strife in women's lives.
05:32It's like, I just want the person that I can be with
05:35and not have to regret it later on, you know?
05:37But you keep coming back around.
05:38Hey, speaking of being with,
05:39what's your love life looking like now?
05:41I'm very much happy.
05:42I think it's hard sometimes in this industry
05:44to find people who are genuine
05:46and who aren't trying to like, you know, promote themselves.
05:49In my world, it's very much, what do you do?
05:51Who are you?
05:52But I think I constantly give out authentic energy
05:55and that's what I've been getting back.
05:56So I'm happy.
05:56When you get that, when you get them Grammys,
05:58you really start getting offers and stuff.
06:00I'm telling you.
06:01Yeah, it definitely, I mean, hey,
06:03with new levels comes new devils.
06:04There you go.
06:05I like that.
06:06We use that.
06:06So we're talking to Coco Jones.
06:08She's live here in Detroit,
06:09here in the studio with Tune Up, man.
06:10So the song, Here We Go, I'm loving that.
06:14I told you a record rep when I first heard it.
06:16I'm like, that's a whole new side of you.
06:18Tell me about that new single.
06:20Well, yeah, I love Here We Go.
06:23I love the Lenny Williams sample.
06:25And I think I also like to be able to
06:27not just give heartbreak, you know?
06:28I think R&B is all those emotions.
06:31It's anger and it's passion.
06:33It's heartbreak.
06:33It's uptempo.
06:34So I'm excited to give a bunch of different moods of R&B.
06:38That's two hot singles right there, Coco.
06:40So I'm looking for the,
06:41I'm hearing that the new album is coming out
06:43late fall, early next year.
06:44Well, we're working on top of the year.
06:46I have another single coming out this month
06:49on the 18th with Me and Future.
06:51And that's cool.
06:52It's like a trap ballad.
06:53It's very like both of our worlds colliding.
06:55And then I want to do a Christmas song.
06:57And then at the top of the year,
06:58I want to put my album out.
06:59See, that's what superstars do.
07:00Hey, I'm trying, you know, you know,
07:03I'm still a baby in it.
07:04So on this new album,
07:05I'm hearing like 14 tracks possibly?
07:07Yeah, about that.
07:0813, 14.
07:09And then we probably would do like a deluxe too.
07:11It's hard, man, choosing like what's going to make the cut.
07:14Because at this time,
07:14I feel like there's no literal formula.
07:17You just got to go with, you know,
07:18you just got to gamble on yourself
07:19and how the music makes you feel
07:21and hope the world agrees.
07:23Yeah, I hear you.
07:23I hear you.
07:24It's a hard business to not just to get into,
07:26but to stay in it.
07:27Yeah.
07:28Any advice you have for a young lady
07:29who's thinking about,
07:31I want to be the next Coco Jones?
07:32I mean, honestly,
07:33you kind of have to have a little bit of a delusion about you
07:36because a lot of the time
07:38you're going to be seeing a version of yourself in the future
07:40that nobody will be able to see right then and there, you know?
07:43And some people may,
07:44maybe in your family or maybe in your circle,
07:46doubt that or maybe get scared for you
07:49and then try to make you scared as well.
07:50Yeah.
07:50You got to be a little delusional.
07:52And sometimes you're going to have to push past
07:55the uncomfortability and the uncertainty
07:57because a lot of the times it's not going to look pretty, you know?
08:00It's just going to be your journey.
08:02Coco, give me something for 2025
08:03that nobody knows, but I'm the first to know.
08:06What the?
08:07I mean, I can't tell the future.
08:08I don't even know my damn self.
08:10Give me something.
08:11For 2025?
08:12What you got, Landa?
08:13I don't know.
08:15I ain't got nothing for you, man.
08:16I don't even know myself.
08:17We both don't know.
08:18I don't know what's going on next year,
08:19but I'm excited.
08:21Well, my debut album is like the main thing,
08:24which I've been talking about so much,
08:25but I think I'm excited for people to see the version of Coco
08:30that I am now.
08:32I think with my EP,
08:33I felt like this freshman at college,
08:35like, oh, my God, I hope y'all like me.
08:37I just got here.
08:38But with my album,
08:40I feel like hopefully everybody sees me as cool senior,
08:42like not just the rookie girl.
08:44Like, okay, she's finally made her claim,
08:46and she's one of the girls.
08:47She's not the newbie.
08:48She's like the cool senior.
08:50Got a tour coming up?
08:51Absolutely.
08:51That's the plan for sure in the summer I want to tour,
08:53right after I drop my album.
08:54Okay, sounds good.
08:55Yeah.
08:56And I want to thank my man Drew Dada from Def Jam
08:58who made it possible this interview.
09:00And, man, I'm so glad I got a chance to kick it with you, Coco.
09:02Of course.
09:02Thanks for coming through.
09:03Yeah, thanks for having me.
09:04I'll see you again soon, okay?
09:06For sure.
09:06Ladies and gentlemen, Coco Jones.
