Mother Honors Navy Veteran Who Is Now A Tampa Firefighter

00:00Tampa Bay's morning crew want to honor and thank those who protect and serve our country.
00:05Time now for Military Monday on 99.5 QYK.
00:10We got Shelby on the phone and we are honoring her son Garrett today.
00:14Shelby, why don't you tell us about Garrett's service?
00:16Well, he's currently a Naval Air Crewman Petty Officer First Class in the Navy Reserve
00:22serving out of the MacDill Air Force Base currently.
00:25All right.
00:26He graduated Tampa Tech, so he's a local Tampa boy, and he went straight into the Navy out of high school.
00:32He did some training in Chicago, Pensacola, and that's where he became a Naval Airman Operator.
00:38Wow.
00:39Yeah, he did six years active in the Navy, and during that time he went on three deployments
00:45and had been in 17 countries and received four achievement medals, one which he was real proud of.
00:52They were on the national news.
00:53They found some stranded people off an island in micro-Indonesia, so that was pretty cool.
01:00That's very cool.
01:01An amazing story.
01:02You know, Shelby, you talked about him graduating from Tampa Tech.
01:04Is this something that he's wanted to do since high school, go into the service?
01:08Yes.
01:09Ever since high school, someone inspired him there, and so he joined, you know, right after high school
01:16and then went into the reserves where he joined the funeral honor guard, and he's almost done 300 funerals at this point.
01:25Wow.
01:25Well, that especially is a very honorable job.
01:27So what are his plans now?
01:28Recently, he just got done with some schooling at HCC and Kaiser, and he got his EMT, and went through firefighting school,
01:36and he's going to be a firefighter.
01:39It's so neat.
01:41The city of Tampa just hired him a week ago, so he's really excited.
01:45Oh, my gosh.
01:45You can't stop this kid.
01:47No, he really has a drive, and he loves serving others, and he loves his military.
01:53He's very proud of it.
01:54Well, he should be proud of his service, and we are proud of him, and so thankful for him following his calling
02:00and now his calling to serve even more as a firefighter.
