00:00The 2025 NFL Draft is only a few days away, and all eyes are on the Pittsburgh Steelers and what they do at 21st overall.
00:09But, there is a chance that if a plethora of the Steelers prospects are off the board, they don't pick in the first round at all.
00:18Today, we're going to explain why.
00:20Hey everyone, Rob Grex of A to Z Sports Pittsburgh, and today, I'm going to explain why trading out of the first round is a real possibility for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:34To begin, let's set the stage for this draft.
00:37You talk to people that are in the league, that are around the league, other people in media, and everyone admits that this is one of the worst draft classes in recent memory.
00:48That's not just at the quarterback position, or the wide receiver position, but overall.
00:54So, if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, and you only have two picks on the first two days, being 21st overall and 83rd overall, what is the smartest strategy?
01:07If Shadur Sanders, and the top defensive lineman on their board, and the top wide receiver on their board, are all gone by 21.
01:16If you try and trade up, and you cannot, why stick and pick?
01:20Why force a selection that, in a bad draft class, where, once again, you talk to people, the meat of the class, the best players, is in that 30 to 60 range, where you have no picks?
01:34Why stay and force someone at 21, when you can trade back, get a second, maybe even another third, and suddenly, now you have three picks on day two, instead of just one at 83 overall.
01:50So, that is the game that the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to play, and one that we've had reports that they are seriously considering.
01:58So, if you're the Steelers, it all comes down to what the board looks like, and how things in front of you play out.
02:06If there's no Shadur Sanders, if, let's say, a Derek Harmon's gone, or an Emeka Buka at wide receiver are off the board, they're going to have to think long and hard about the 21st overall pick.
02:18That's not to say that they won't take a running back. Maybe O'Marion Hampton's there, maybe Travion Henderson.
02:25But why force a running back, when we know this class is stacked at running back?
02:31It's one of the few positions, along with tight end, where you can find a lot of good players on day two, in the second and third round.
02:39Well, guess what? You trade back, all of a sudden, you have all these options at running back, if you're the Steelers.
02:45A position, among many others, that we know they have to target.
02:49So, if you're Pittsburgh, you have to think long and hard about staying and picking at 21, or moving back in the draft, and it's something to watch on Thursday night.
