The Maharashtra government, led by Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, has taken a significant step by making Hindi a mandatory subject for students of Classes 1 to 5 across the state. This decision, implemented under the three-language formula of the National Education Policy (NEP), designates Hindi as the third language in the curriculum. However, the move has triggered strong political opposition. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray criticized the decision, stating that Hindi is not a national language and that such “Hindi imposition” will not be tolerated. He called the policy “unacceptable.” The Congress party has also opposed the move, calling it an attack on regional identity and linguistic diversity. In response to the backlash, the Fadnavis government clarified that the decision does not undermine the importance or respect for Marathi, the state’s official language. The government emphasized that the policy aims to promote linguistic inclusivity without diminishing regional pride.
