00:01Hi, welcome back. Matt Deary with you. Drew and Mark coming in here for Crosstalk momentarily.
00:05Maz is here. It's gotten a little bit hot with this Nick Castellanos discussion, in case you missed it.
00:10I asked Nick about Victor Martinez's comments. Nick said, yeah, there are still plenty of guys not over it.
00:17There are some guys it still stings from Game 3 last year of the ALDS when during player introductions,
00:25Java and Soria got booed, Brad got booed, and Nick said the Oriole players who were lined up on the first baseline across from the Tiger players
00:37were giving the Tiger players looks like, wow, can you believe this? So the Oriole players sort of saw it as well.
00:44We take Andrew on line 3 on Detroit Sports 105.1 on this subject because it's interesting.
00:51What's up, Andrew? How you doing, buddy?
01:09I'm a little... I know, I know. It was last October. And again, like I said, Victor Martinez signed a brand new deal.
01:17He could have bolted and told ownership, you know what? I don't want to play in front of fans.
01:21They're going to boo us like this. It still bothers me. He had every right to go wherever he wanted.
01:25He elected to stay. And now he's complaining about it now.
01:28How come during the Tiger's caravan, Drew, or during Winterfest or Tigerfest or whatever they call it,
01:34how come a couple of guys didn't get up there and go, you know what, guys, we love you.
01:37We were really disappointed a couple of months ago. Can we get that fixed?
01:41Nobody said a word. Now that they're losing, they're trying to pawn it off.
01:45And I'm not saying Nick is, but they're trying to pawn off excuses on the fans.
01:50And I think it's BS.
02:03This is what we're talking about. And this is already in your folder.
02:11Yeah, I know.
02:12Yeah, don't worry.
02:13Well, I think it was, I think I would not have done, thanks to the phone call, Drew,
02:27I think I would not have done my job if I didn't ask Nick about the comments.
02:31As Maz said earlier, what would you like me to do? Break down tonight's pitching matchup?
02:36I don't even know who's pitching.
02:37Who's pitching?
02:38Who's pitching tonight for the Diners?
02:40It doesn't matter.
02:41Who's pitching tonight?
02:42The rookie.
02:43Which rookie?
02:44Whatever the hell is it?
02:45Oh, yeah, Daniel Norris.
02:46What would you guys rather hear?
02:48Hey, hey, Nick, I think Daniel Norris will look at a pitch count tonight of like 45,
02:52or what do you think of Victor taking a shot at the fans?
02:56Got to get Nick's take on it, of course.
02:58Zach Herman on Twitter writes in a Derry 105.
03:01I'd like to think I'm very sympathetic to players' feelings.
03:04They're people too.
03:05But come on, this was 10 months ago.
03:07Bruce Weinberger, I love Nick.
03:09But players who hate the boos need to look inward, not at the frustrated fans.
03:14Detroit Tigers fans on Twitter writes, this is why you don't boo players.
03:19It is a everyman good fan topic.
03:23We bring Drew Lane and Mark Fellauer in here for cross talk.
03:25We boo them, but we also cheer them.
03:27I think Tiger fans have gotten a little spoiled.
03:30Absolutely I do.
03:31But I also think that this group sometimes acts like jackasses.
03:36Yeah.
03:36And so then it gets out in the media.
03:38Then it gets out on the radio.
03:40And so they go to hell with it.
03:41I'm going to pay my...
03:42Nobody threw any batteries at Victor last October.
03:45Hit on the eye.
03:45I don't know.
03:46They've never been sports fans.
03:48Don't they understand?
03:49Maybe they don't.
03:50Mark?
03:51Mark, maybe they don't.
03:52I was just stunned to hear Nick sort of comment like, yeah, there's some guys that still...
03:56Nick had it in his brain when I asked him about it.
03:59Crystal clear what happened last year in October.
04:02He had everything down from the Oriole players looking at them.
04:05David Price's feelings.
04:06David Price's feelings about it.
04:07He remembered each guy and how they felt.
04:10I mean, obviously, this is still a stench that is emanating from the clubhouse, I guess.
04:18But, you know, let's have a little balance here.
04:20Three million people through the turnstiles.
04:22This year.
04:23In a city the size of Detroit.
04:24Pretty damn good.
04:25Yeah.
04:2530,000 people going to ballgames two weeks ago with a team way out of the race.
04:30Miles out of the race.
04:32And then there's also the issue of the bullpen.
04:35How many years can you go throwing games away when you're leading an eighth and ninth inning
04:40without the fans going a little nuts?
04:42And that's who they booed, really.
04:43Didn't they rain boos upon them?
04:45That was Soria and Java.
04:47And when I said Soria and Java got booed, Nick said, so did Brad.
04:51And Nick's a Brad guy.
04:53You know, Nick supported Brad when we asked him about Brad.
04:55He's a manager.
04:57Managers are...
04:57That's not unusual.
04:59Is this really...
05:00Is that really that unusual for a manager to get booed?
05:03No.
05:03Well, before your first home playoff game?
05:07Well, we were down 2-0, though.
05:09We were about to lose.
05:10Correct.
05:10But I think Nick's point was, hey, look, I'm excited about coming home.
05:14It's my first playoff game that I played in, you know, because I'm a regular now.
05:19It was his second year, technically, last year.
05:21The Orioles were on their way up.
05:22We were on our way down last year.
05:25Correct.
05:25The fans knew what was next.
05:27They knew what they were done.
05:28But in the defense of the players, and I'm not defending most of them, but I'm going
05:32to say in this instance, just to have some balance in this discussion, in defense of
05:35the players, I think a guy like Nick was kind of stunned that for introductions, when
05:39they still felt like, hey, we're down 0-2, we can take three straight from this team.
05:43Heck, there were people in this town in the newspaper that picked the Tigers' sweep.
05:48So they felt like, we can win three in a row.
05:50It's not a best-of-seven when we're down 0-3.
05:53It's only a best-of-five.
05:53We're down 0-2.
05:54And the booze rained down, and it's obvious that for some guys, they were still affected
05:58by it.
05:59They're still carrying it.
06:00Make sure my...
06:03Chelsea scored, by the way, there.
06:05I won nothing.
06:06Oh, boy.
06:07I'm kind of stunned, to be honest.
06:09I mean, I'm fascinated by it, but at the same time, I'm a little stunned, just because
06:13so often you get the, eh, this is a business, and we understand that, and that's why we had
06:18to sell players this year, and that's why I got traded.
06:22I mean, guys seem to understand the business of big-time sports, and this is big-time sports.
06:28Like I said, 3 million people, so there's a turnstiles.
06:30Yeah, some are getting really pissed, and the bullpen, as long as...
06:33Well, it's still unbuilt.
06:34The bullpen's...
06:35We still don't have a bullpen.
06:37Here's the other thing, and you're listening to WMGC-FM HD1 Detroit.
06:40Victor Martinez, after October, right?
06:42After the booing incident that now is apparently what we're calling it.
06:46We'll live in infamy.
06:47He re-signed with the Tigers, held it, got 17 million a year for four years, and had
06:53a press conference where Mike Illich showed up.
06:56How come at that presser, he couldn't have said, guys, I got one more thing I want to
06:59say.
07:00I was disappointed in October.
07:02I didn't like it.
07:03A lot of the guys felt the same way.
07:05We hope that for next year, and my four years beyond, that can't ever happen again.
07:11That would have been done with.
07:12Because he got a 17 million.
07:13He didn't want to spoil the day.
07:14So instead, he waits until now, September, this article was written two days ago, September
07:1814th with McCoskey in the news, and he spouts off about how, well, you know, everybody's
07:22going to learn a lesson.
07:23I'm going to learn a lesson from having a bad year.
07:24The front office, and oh, by the way, the fans are going to learn a lesson, too.
07:27It's like, whoa, whoa, you're in last place, bro.
07:30Don't start telling people paying the kind of money we're paying for our tickets that you're
07:34going to teach us a lesson, please.
07:36Well, what they meant is...
07:37The customer's always right.
07:38Give me a break.
07:39Victor said we took it for granted, we, the fans, that the Central was just part of the
07:45deal.
07:45You win the Central.
07:46Maybe he's taking three million a year for granted.
07:49The fans always show up.
07:51I think this...
07:51Right.
07:52That's the thing.
07:52I think this has been a pretty good fan base over the last...
07:54Since 06.
07:55Since 06.
07:56And, you know, the diehards that were still around at Tiger Stadium between what?
08:01When they were good?
08:0288 to 05.
08:03When they moved into Comerica.
08:04There were still plenty.
08:06Take it from me, an Indians fan.
08:08Our fan base sucks.
08:09All right?
08:09We don't have anybody.
08:10It's me and about eight others.
08:11Yeah, they laid fireworks off at the wrong time.
08:13Oh, gosh.
08:14What an old bit.
08:15I figured it was wrong.
08:16Right.
08:16And John...
08:17Right.
08:17The Tiger fans are pretty good.
08:19So, whether you think they're spoiled or not, timing now, if the team is in a free
08:23fall and nobody's paying attention, now is probably not the best time to be slinging
08:26arrows about the fans needed.
08:28They're learning a lesson, too.
08:29Not to mention you haven't driven a run in a month.
08:31Right.
08:31Well, he did last night.
08:32Yeah.
08:32But when he was quoted by McCoskey, he was in that 20...
08:37He hadn't driven in a run since August 20th.
08:39Yeah, he hit the ball great last night.
08:40Even the one out he had hit the ball hard.
08:43Look at Drew watching the games.
08:44Maz, you called it.
08:45I know.
08:45Maz goes, no, he's watching.
08:46I said, I watched a little, and I bet Drew is.
08:48Oh, for the worse.
08:49That's it.
08:50I was up watching Joe Maurer drill that double to left center and made it 5-4.
08:53Dude, why...
08:54Ron, don't throw 17 straight fastballs.
08:57Ron Allen says you might want to mix in a slider against...
09:00Maurer on his fifth pitch.
09:02He saw it and said, oh, if you're going to keep throwing me a fastball, the line went
09:05into left center.
09:06Drilled it.
09:06I watched Texas and Houston.
09:08That's a real game.
09:10I don't know.
09:10I'm addicted to the Tigers.
09:12What can I say?
09:13He's not a fan of every team like you are.
09:15Playoff.
09:15I like playoff baseball.
09:17I did watch a little bit of that game, though, actually.
09:18A.L. West.
09:19Yeah, that's a...
09:19That's still another big hit, and that's definitely Prince.
09:21Yeah, Prince is like the Cavaliers.
09:23His run was the game-winner.
09:24It's kind of fun watching a team choke away a lead, too.
09:27They're not choking.
09:28Well, Houston, they're not doing terribly well.
09:30No, but Texas is on fire.
09:32They are.
09:33You're right.
09:34Prince is playing really well, too.
09:35He's kind of the Cavaliers.
09:36He's the clubhouse leader.
09:37He is.
09:37Which is very funny.
09:39He's got kids, man.
09:40He does.
09:41Too bad he had to open his mouth.
09:43There it is.
09:44It is too bad.
09:45Because that bat...
09:46You said it yesterday.
09:47You said it yesterday.
09:48We had him when he had the worst year of his life.
09:50He was injured.
09:52Anyway, he was injured, too.
09:53The worst year of his life.
09:54And that's the way he's got to go out.
09:56Who knows?
09:57He still drove in 100 runs for both years.
09:59He's a terrific player.
10:01He's a great player.
10:01Nobody.
10:02There's some other driving going on.
10:04I don't understand why he had to go because of that.
10:07Nobody hits the ball harder than Prince Fielder.
10:10Nobody.
10:10You hit it on the head yesterday.
10:13You said that.
10:14I felt even worse.
10:16Why?
10:16Would you rather have him than Kinsler?
10:18You know what?
10:18I don't want to play...
10:19I like Kinsler a lot, too.
10:21I like having him.
10:22Kinsler's been great for us.
10:23Yes.
10:24So you'd rather have Prince, though?
10:25No, I want Prince now.
10:26I can't have him now and not have him a couple of years ago.
10:29Of course you'd rather have Prince than Kinsler.
10:32Come on.
10:33Kinsler's been terrific.
10:34A good Prince.
10:35Prince on his game?
10:36Yeah.
10:36But I love Kinsler.
10:37I just want to make that point.
10:38Me, too.
10:38Well, I mean, that was the fireworks, fellas.
10:43I didn't even think we'd even talk about Tigers, but, you know, we have Nick on every Wednesday,
10:47and it was good.
10:48So you're still addicted to the Tigers?
10:50Well, no.
10:51I was watching baseball last night.
10:54I just...
10:55What can I say?
10:55It was a close game.
10:57I like some of the twin players, too.
10:59I'm not just...
11:00I mean, I love the Tigers, but...
11:01You've always loved Mahler.
11:03Yeah, I love Joe Mahler.
11:04The twins play...
11:05They're playing hard for Mahler.
11:07They are.
11:07A lot of those young guys that have sucked the last few years now are starting to come around.
11:10And Sineau's going to be good.
11:11Although, he looked bad on the last at-bat.
11:13He hits the ball a ton.
11:15Yeah, no doubt.
11:16God, this...
11:17The guy...
11:19Not Sineau, but the other guy they brought, Buxton?
11:21Byron Buxton, yeah.
11:22Oh, my God!
11:23Is he fast!
11:24Yeah, he's going to be...
11:24Wow!
11:24He's going to be good.
11:25He just needs a couple of years, and he's going to be...
11:27He's one of the top prospects in the game.
11:28Oh, yeah.
11:29In the last three years.
11:30I think they rushed him up a little this year, but he's solid.
11:33He laid a bunt down that was not a great bunt, but it was...
11:36It was like, for the average guy, he'd be thrown out by two steps.
11:39Beat it out.
11:40Not even close.
11:41Yeah.
11:41And then, later on, he gave me another incredible base-running move.
11:46But, they said he runs to first base 3.7 from the right side.
11:51That's...
11:51I mean, I heard 4.1, 4.2 was fast.
11:54I thought.
11:56And he's running 3.7.
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:58But those two guys...
11:59Is it Sineau, S-A-N-R?
12:00Yeah, Sineau.
12:01He's having...
12:01He's doing fabulous.
12:02Yeah, he's having a good second.
12:03The other's been terrific all year.
12:05Yeah, 19 bombs and 69 ratings.
12:06That was the other comment that Nick said.
12:08We even brought up.
12:09When I asked him about Victor being the leader, he goes,
12:10Well, we don't really have one leader since Torrey left.
12:13Totally said that.
12:15I said it that he should never let him go.
12:17What did he say, exactly?
12:17He said...
12:18I said, is Victor the leader?
12:19I go, Victor's spouting out about the fans.
12:21He's speaking for the whole team.
12:22Is he the leader?
12:22He goes, we have some leaders like Victor and Miguel, but we don't have a leader like Torrey
12:27Hucka that he was here.
12:28So, he's kind of giving Torrey a little love that he ran the clubhouse.
12:31He sure did.
12:32You know?
12:32He was the guy.
12:33Yeah, he's definitely missed.
12:35And I'll tell you what, he's having a nice year for them.
12:3719 bombs, 69 ribbies.
12:38And they're winning.
12:39Look at, look at, look at...
12:41I think it was Brian Holliday who told me in the offseason.
12:42He goes, you're...
12:43I said something like, oh, well, you're not going to have the Torrey charade at right
12:46field defensively.
12:47And he goes, let me tell you something.
12:48Trust me.
12:49He goes, he was a huge leader for us.
12:51We're going to miss him.
12:52So, he's only a game and a half out, Drew.
12:54Right.
12:55Yeah, right there.
12:56They can do it.
12:57Cross Talk brought to you by Autolab ER for your car.
13:00All right, guys.
13:00Okie dokie.
13:01See you, Matt.
13:02Uh, it's 308 and all kinds of stuff.
