00:00What do you think the midterms are possibly going to look like for the Republicans and for Donald Trump?
00:05And we haven't forgotten that the tariffs are also looming in the background.
00:10Well, I think by the time you get to November 2026 in the midterms, I think if you have the economic downturns caused not just simply by the likely rise in inflation, including the effects of tariffs,
00:23but if you have the economic and social effects that the government no longer works properly, yeah, that doesn't bode well for the Republicans.
00:32And indeed, Donald Trump has slipped significantly in opinion polls in the less than three months that he's been in office.
00:38But again, I have to take this beyond the question of the midterms in November 2026.
00:43Before we get there, America is in the unprecedented situation where you have what is now an authoritarian government.
00:50If you take the damage to the agencies, if you take the illegal and unconstitutional measures effectively disappearing people,
01:00as they have done recently, sending them to mass prisons in El Salvador,
01:04if you talk about the denial of judicial rights to Americans,
01:08if you talk about Donald Trump, as he did yesterday, denying the legitimacy of the Supreme Court
01:14when it made a unanimous decision in a case involving one of those disappeared immigrants,
01:19you have a question of an emergency regarding authoritarian government that is here now, not in November 2026.
01:28So we've got to talk about that even before we get to the midterms.
