00:00In Ecuador, Citizens' Revolution candidate Luisa González does not recognize the results of the 2025 presidential run-off amid voting irregularities.
00:21Heavy rains affect the Dominican Republic, causing flooding in several locations across the country.
00:42Police in Netherlands repressed Monday a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied the administrative headquarters of the University of Amsterdam in rejection of its links with Israel.
00:59Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:12The Citizens' Revolution movement in Ecuador rejected the results of Sunday's presidential run-off election, climbing irregularities that questioned the alleged victory of candidate Daniel Novoa.
01:30The political movement denounced the manipulation of the voting tallies, the anticipated announcement by the CNE of Novoa's alleged victory to influence public opinion, military intimidation and obstruction to the presence of observers in order to undermine the transparency of the polls.
01:48The Citizens' movement urged authorities to conduct the necessary investigation on social regularities, which severely limit the transparency of the electoral process.
01:59I want to be very clear and categorical.
02:09The Citizens' revolution has always recognized a defeat, in the last elections, when the polls and statistics have shown it.
02:16Today we do not recognize the results.
02:21Today we do not recognize the results.
02:36I am going to be very clear, in the name of the men, women, children, young people, whom
02:54I represent, whom all of us who are here represent, in the name of the people we represent, we
03:03do not recognize the results presented by the National Electoral Council.
03:10The Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity of Ecuador expressed its
03:14solidarity with the Ecuadorian people and Citizens' Revolution candidate Luisa González.
03:20In a statement, the organization called for the immediate repeal of Decree 5999 and the
03:27restoration of the fundamental rights of the Ecuadorian people.
03:31The decree contradicts legal doctrine and international standards which establish that states of emergency
03:37should not affect political rights or democratic processes, as in the case with the electoral
03:43process held on April 13, 2025.
03:46The group in also called on the National Electoral Council to make the electoral process and its
03:51results transparent, considering everything from the complete vote count to the analysis
03:57of compliance with the requirements set forth in the Code of Democracy and Legislation.
04:02The statement continued.
04:03We called on Ecuadorian institutions to ensure the continued existence of democracy, respect
04:10for human rights and an end to all forms of political and media persecution against local authorities.
04:16Finally, the organization urged international organizations, international observers and democracy advocates
04:22to ensure Ecuador's return to constitutional order and the end of all authoritarian actions.
04:28For the report, the UASU Front of Paraguay issued a statement qualifying the process as an outrage
04:43to the popular will after the fraud denounced by Luisa González.
04:47The organization affirmed that Daniel Novoa uses the state to control and prevent the advance
04:52of progressive forces.
04:54The Ecuadorian government, under the control of avaricious oligarchy, has carried out scandalous
05:01and crude electoral fraud.
05:04For its part, the international collective of CELAC Social states the following.
05:13What has happened in this country is not only a case of administrative irregularities, it is
05:17a systematic set-up aimed at imposing by force an authoritarian project led by Daniel Novoa.
05:25The document announces last-minute alterations in voting places, arbitrary use of state resources
05:31for client-less purposes, deliberate exclusion of international observers and the unacceptable
05:38suspension of the vote of thousands of Ecuadorians abroad.
05:42The communique states, in view of this scenario, we make an urgent call for organization, active
05:48resistance and popular mobilization.
05:51It is on the streets, in the neighborhoods, in the communities and in every corner of a struggle
05:55where the defense of democracy must be upheld.
06:08The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a meeting with the candidates for Governors
06:12of the Great Patriotic Poll ahead of the elections scheduled for May 25th.
06:17From the mountain barracks in the city of Caracas, the Venezuelan President was received by the
06:21candidates to the 23 governorships of the country.
06:25During the event, the Venezuelan President urged the candidates to commit themselves to preserve
06:29peace in the country in the face of the right-wing intentions to carry out a coup d'etat.
06:35More than 21 million voters are summoned to participate in the parliamentary and regional elections in
06:40Venezuela, as scheduled for May 25th, 2025.
06:51As of Monday, Argentina eliminates foreign exchange restrictions as part of the so-called
06:56Phase 3 of the economic program of Javier Millet's government.
07:00The move authorizes the purchase of foreign currency without limits with local currency at
07:05flexible exchange rates, plus an increase of 1% per month.
07:10According to experts, the removal of restrictions could lead to an acceleration of inflation in
07:16Argentina, which currently stands at around 60%.
07:20These financial measures are implemented after the current government obtain a financial aid
07:25of at least $20 billion from the International Monetary Fund.
07:35In Argentina, Santa Fe Province Governor Maximiliano Pularo won a resounding victory in the elections
07:41for constituent convention members in Santa Fe, ensuring a clear majority.
07:47Second place went to Juan Monteverde, candidate representing Peronism, with 14.8% of the votes,
07:54while in third place was Nicolás Mayoraz of Liberty Advances, with 13.9%.
08:00In the next days, the Assembly will be formed to debate a constitutional reform in matters
08:05of political security, municipal autonomy and modernization of the state.
08:10In this regard, Governor Pularo emphasized that with this reform, what is being discussed
08:16is the next 20 or 30 years of the province.
08:24And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember, you can join us on TikTok
08:30at Telesur English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:34We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:36Welcome back to From the South.
08:48U.S. President Donald Trump met with his Salvadoran counterpart Nayib Bukele on Monday to tackle
09:04a strategic cooperation issues, namely the massive deportations of Latin American migrants.
09:09The Salvadoran head of state has been in the U.S. since past Saturday.
09:13His visit was reportedly aimed at strengthening his alliance with Trump.
09:18U.S. media asserted that Bukele would be the first Latin American president to be received at
09:23the White House for their good relations. In this context, both leaders who were accompanied
09:28by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance discussed the return of Salvadoran
09:35migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia wrongly deported to a high-security prison. In this regard,
09:40Bukele stated that Abrego was a criminal in the U.S. and that he won't be freeing him.
09:46In the United States, authorities investigated a fire at the residence of Pennsylvania Governor
09:59Democrat Josh Shafito. Pennsylvania State Police reported that the Governor and his family were
10:05immediately evacuated from the house. The blaze damaged the infrastructure of the building. Police
10:11authorities added that video surveillance showed an individual breaking a window and throwing a
10:17Molotov cocktail inside the house, triggering the fire. The U.S. prosecution informed that 38-year-old
10:24Cody Balmer turned himself into police and was being held on charges of attempted murder,
10:31aggravated arson, terrorism and other charges.
10:41The Panamanian people is ready to take to the streets in defense of their sovereignty in the
10:48face of the imperialist attempts by the U.S. President Donald Trump. Let's see more information
10:53in the following report by our correspondent Belén de los Santos.
11:00Panamanians are once again ready to take to the streets in defense of their sovereignty. After a week
11:06in which the government received U.S. officials and once again yielded to the will of the Trump
11:11administration, allowing increased presence of U.S. military in Panamanian territory,
11:16the major working sectors are coming together to defend the people's resources, which they understand
11:23are being handed over to foreign powers. Because Panama has a serious problem,
11:28and it is that the mafiocracy that we define as the corrupt oligarchy that thinks it owns the country,
11:34together with its servant politicians, the traditional politicians and a new generation of politicians,
11:41are dedicated to the plundering and looting of the people's resources, so there is widespread
11:46dissatisfaction in that sense, and we are facing a problem in which these traitors are finally
11:51receiving Rubio. They are receiving the heads of the Southern Command, they are receiving CIA agents,
11:58and now the Hegseth, Secretary of War or Defense of the United States, has arrived. They have
12:04practically signed memorandums that violate the political constitution in its article 91 and 325.
12:11According to one of the country's main union leaders, Saul Mendez, documents signed by the
12:16Panamanian executive constitute an act against the homeland, as the constitution states that the
12:22president cannot concede national territory in any way to foreign powers and that any change
12:28regarding the canal's defense should be approved by the assembly and through a popular consultation.
12:34This context adds to the social discontent regarding the mismanagement of sovereign resources
12:40and the recently approved social security reform that directly affects the working class.
12:45The Panamanian people have always been a peaceful people, but the people of struggle who demand
12:56respect, who demand that their fundamental social claims be fulfilled. In recent periods,
13:02we have seen a country where the economy is growing, but living conditions are very precarious.
13:07The fourth place with the worst distribution of wealth in the world. This has generated national
13:13discontent, and Panamanians have asked for a canal in favor of the interest of Panamanians,
13:20a canal for the country and not a country for the canal. And on top of that comes the government of
13:26Jose Raul Molino, a reactionary government that calls itself a business government, but is, above all,
13:33in the face of the aggression after Donald Trump became president of the United States, a submissive
13:39government dragged along that has allowed a series of situations that we Panamanians thought had been
13:45overcome. For example, the military presence of the United States in our country.
13:58As in 2023, when Panama saw massive protests against the expansion of foreign mining in the country,
14:05the political climate in the nation anticipates a new cycle of demonstrations as the working class
14:10is determined to fight against the impositions of a U.S.-aligned government that prioritizes foreign
14:16mandates over its own people. Unions from different economic sectors are organizing a joint action
14:22plan with a great demonstration set for April 24th, when a general strike is likely to be announced.
14:29The rejection of U.S. military bases in the country, as well as the construction of a new
14:34dam in Rio Indio, and the need to repeal the social security law are the main causes fueling the struggle.
14:44Panama's sovereignty is cared for by Panamanians. The people have risen up as of Wednesday,
14:50April 23rd. The teachers of this country have announced that we are going to go on a general
14:56strike, and as of April to 4th. After the great national march that we are going to have that day,
15:02it is most probable that a national strike of all other sectors will be announced.
15:12And hence the slogan, this country is not for sale. This country has been defended,
15:16and this is a fact that we have demonstrated with the blood of Panamanian men and women.
15:21Belen de los Santos from Panama City for Telesur English.
15:40Heavy rains affect the Dominican Republic causing flooding in several locations across the country.
15:45The torrential rains have caused the overflow of the Soco River and the collapse of one of the walls of
15:52the municipal cemetery of El Ceibo. The Emergency Operations Center has declared red to green alerts
15:58in 18 provinces due to the rains, which the National Institute of Meteorology forecast will continue on
16:05Monday. Authorities have warned the population of the affected areas to refrain from crossing rivers,
16:11streams or creeks in order to avoid unfortunate accidents.
16:26Palestinian civil defense denounced that the Israeli occupation regime had been arbitrarily
16:43attacking the health sector in the Gaza Strip. Earlier, the Sionist forces had demanded to evacuate
16:49outside downtown southern Gaza. Right afterwards, Israeli airstrikes hit the area, namely the Al-Ali
16:56Baptist Hospital, the last one able to provide medical assistance. So far, authorities reported no
17:02fatalities. In this context, the Return Health and Community Association in Gaza condemned the Israeli
17:08campaign against Gaza's health care centers, and it underscored that over 60 percent of hospitals and
17:15primary care centers have been destroyed since October 2023.
17:26Houthis registered U.S. airstrikes on Sanaa City, which brought about six deaths and 30 others injured.
17:33Yemeni media reported that U.S. bombings targeted a factory in the industrial Al-Sawari western zone in
17:40Bani Matar region. Houthis confirmed the aforesaid death toll and wounded in the ceramics factory after
17:47the three consecutive attacks in addition to the impact of shellings on Sunday evening. Houthis further
17:53claimed that the factory had recently resumed its operations after receiving a similar aggression in
17:592016 that had kept it closed for several years. Likewise, they highlighted that the U.S. offensive has
18:07climbed some 100 lives and injured 250 people, mostly women and children.
18:18Police in the Netherlands repressed Monday a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied the
18:23administrative headquarters of the University of Amsterdam in rejection of its links with Israel.
18:29The occupation took place after the group failed to engage the university in talks about its links
18:35with Israeli academic centers involved in the genocide against the Gaza Strip. Tensions escalated as riot
18:42officers moved in to control the crowd and prevent photo disruption. Around 5 pm local time police
18:49removed the last protesters from the scene bringing the action to a close. After that, some demonstrators
18:56reportedly shifted their progress to other university of Amsterdam buildings.
