00:46He was one of the people responsible for the boom
00:50in Latin American literature during the 60s and 70s
00:54with a number of masterpieces, starting with his first book
01:00The Time of the Hero, I think it's called in English,
01:04when he was just 25 years old
01:06and continued to produce a number of very, very respected
01:11and excellent works of fiction.
01:14They are often very complex in composition, his books.
01:17He is masterful when it comes to dialogue, shifting time planes
01:22and shifting persons, always going for the big picture.
01:25He started writing by working as a teenage journalist back in Peru,
01:32running around on crime scenes and so on.
01:35He has never really left journalism.
01:37He has been reporting from both Gaza and Iraq.
01:40So he is a very multi-talented man.
01:43I would recommend The Feast of the Goat,
01:47which is his book about the Dominican Republic
01:51and the assassination of the dictator,
01:54the old long-standing dictator Rafael Trujillo.
01:57It's a very exact and chilling book
02:00on the inner workings of a dictatorship.
02:02Not only the thing that dictators do
02:05when they sort of kill and torture and censor people,
02:08but also about moral corruption,
02:10the moral corruption of dictatorship.
02:12He believes in improving the world.
02:15He believes in fiction and the power of fiction
02:18to improve the world.
02:19And if that's not an ideal direction, I don't know.
02:23Thank you very much, Peter England.
02:25Thank you.
02:26Thank you.
02:27Thank you.
