00:00The vast Bering Sea, over a million square miles of the world's most violent and unpredictable
00:11waters, and home of the deadliest catch, Alaskan crab.
00:19It's a new king crab season on Alaska's Bering Sea.
00:24A handful of adventurers will battle the weather with rogue waves and deadly steel for a chance
00:35at big money in this modern-day gold rush.
00:45In the past two decades, these waters have claimed more than 90 lives, and this season
00:50that toll is climbing.
00:52The red crab season is just days old, but already the fleet has faced foul weather, injury,
01:02and tragedy.
01:07Some boats are striking it rich, while others are striking out.
01:14Join us as the hunt continues for the deadliest catch.
01:22Yeah!
01:23Yeah!
01:24Yeah!
01:25Woo!
01:26Yeah!
01:27Yeah!
01:28Woo!
01:29Woo!
01:30Yeah!
01:44Whoo!
01:48Yeah!
01:52Whoa!
01:56Whoa!
02:00Whoa!
02:14About 258 miles to the north of Dutch Arbor,
02:16the Northwestern is approaching their second set of 150 pots.
02:20The first 150 struck crab gold in the east.
02:23Now, Captain Sig is looking to cash in on the Western Territory.
02:31We're going to start hauling here on our second load of gear.
02:33It's got a good 46 hours on it now,
02:36so it's got plenty of soak, I think.
02:38The guy's got a little nap on the way over,
02:40so they should be good to go for a while,
02:42and we'll see if we can't get through these next 150.
02:46Last year, the Northwestern fished alone in this area
02:48and pulled up huge numbers.
02:50Now, the word is out.
02:52Three other boats have set gear within spitting distance of six pots.
02:56I don't have too high of expectations for this,
02:59but there's a lot of pots around here.
03:01I think if you get close to a pot, you know,
03:03you're sharing with the other pot,
03:05and so we're not going to have as consistent numbers
03:07as we would have out to the east where we were more alone.
03:11Fishing in a crowd could mean fewer crab per pot
03:14and a longer season for the Northwestern,
03:16something no one wants.
03:18But for crewman Matt Bradley,
03:20one extra day of fishing could translate to eight months of hard time.
03:24I've got a court date coming up that I can't miss.
03:29If I miss this court date, a prosecuting attorney is not going to be so friendly.
03:35I've got priors, believe that.
03:38I'll gain myself eight months of jail time.
03:41Bottom line is what will happen if I miss this court date.
03:44For now, all Matt can do is concentrate on fishing
03:47and hope they can make their quota in time for his court date
03:51in just two weeks.
03:53First hole bed coming up.
03:56It'll be real interesting to see what comes up
03:58when they've got pots this close together.
04:03Come on.
04:08First pot's coming up, we'll see how it goes.
04:10Here it is.
04:13Here it is.
04:14Whoa!
04:15Shot!
04:16Wah, wah, wah.
04:25It's okay, we'll get him.
04:26Cool.
04:31Nine crab.
04:32Nine crab.
04:33You get that?
04:34Copy?
04:36Yes.
05:00No, this place got hammered.
05:01I don't know.
05:02It's just as quick.
05:03Nah, this place got hammered, I don't know.
05:05Sig's one secret spot has been overfished.
05:09Those sloppy seconds hurt.
05:11That's okay, we got 149 more to go.
05:14Edgar tries to stay positive.
05:17I ain't crab.
05:20Not much crab.
05:22If we don't see some decent numbers, we're going to bail.
05:25Low numbers mean more days at sea.
05:35Exactly what Matt does not want.
05:38On a break between strings, Matt decides he can't keep his secret from Sig any longer.
05:44Are you in any thought of when we're going to make it out of here?
05:48I mean, earliest, latest scenario.
05:51I got this court date coming up.
05:53We got set for the 14th.
05:55If I miss this thing, I mean, I'm looking at like eight months.
05:59If I make it, I'll do 20 days.
06:01I don't want to spend Christmas in jail, man.
06:03I go get this whack out.
06:04Why didn't you tell me about that before we flipped her?
06:07Well, I figured, you know, my own little head would make it back by then.
06:12You're not supposed to figure in your own little head.
06:16Every day I was sitting here, it was pushing me further and further away.
06:20But that's when you should have told me.
06:22Yeah.
06:23You don't tell us in the middle of a trip.
06:25No.
06:26You know better, man.
06:27I don't know when we'll be done.
06:28That's the problem.
06:29We don't know if fishing's going to drop right now.
06:31Sure.
06:32Ain't going to be the case.
06:33We're going to catch them all home.
06:35All right.
06:36I'm out of here.
06:37Of course I don't want him to go to jail.
06:49You know, it's the last thing I want.
06:51I mean, the guy's finally walking a straight line.
06:55I can tell he didn't want to say anything because he knows.
06:59It's like, I'm focused here.
07:01And I mean, I'm not going to sit there and take him in because the fishing slowed down.
07:06This is business.
07:07We're fishing.
07:08Well, tough luck.
07:1330 miles to the southwest is the 155 foot wizard, one of the largest vessels in the crab fleet.
07:32Captain Keith manages more than 250 pots in a single trip, an exhausting feat for the crew.
07:44You can tell when the guys are waking up now on their sleep shifts, they're starting to look a little bit more haggard.
07:49And it affects their work, you know?
07:51I mean, that's the main thing.
07:52You can't have these guys distracted by anything.
07:58On deck, the sea and winds are building.
08:01This weary crew is in for a long haul.
08:04But Lenny, the most experienced man, is focused only on fishing.
08:09Hopefully this is the one.
08:11Supposed to be the good one that we spot checked earlier.
08:15By the time they start hauling gear, the wind is blowing 60 and the seas are reaching 30 feet.
08:21They're all flying.
08:22They're walking out the back here.
08:27Not bad.
08:28They're not leaning down, dude.
08:30You know, it's going to be somewhere else, but you don't wanna go on.
08:33Duffing down, not bad.
08:35Up and down, not bad.
08:58I really want to haul this gear, but there is a limit to what we're going to try to do.
09:02It only takes one bad wave to ruin your day.
09:12No rubber mayhem.
09:16What did I mention for you to tie the gear down?
09:19Are you doing that?
09:22These conditions are bad for even seasoned fishermen,
09:25but with two greenhorns on deck, the risk factor goes up.
09:29It was hooked up.
09:32You need to pay attention, neighbor.
09:36You don't want to break the weather.
09:44All right, forget it.
09:45We'll get out of the way.
09:46Give him a sec.
09:47Come on out here.
09:54Watch out.
09:55Watch out.
09:56Watch out.
09:57I don't have the experience.
09:58He doesn't want me basically doing anything right now, but...
10:01They get tangled up a lot, confused about what to do,
10:05and they can't do everything because they haven't learned how to do it yet.
10:08Why don't you throw your hands up?
10:10Were you counted for God who said you counted?
10:12No, I stopped.
10:13I stopped right here.
10:14Oh, that's good enough.
10:16You're looking good.
10:17What's that supposed to be?
10:20Watch out.
10:21Woo!
10:23A 30-foot wave knocks a pot loose.
10:38Grab that pot just up.
10:39Hold this, folks.
10:40Get over there and grab that pot.
10:41Hold this, folks.
10:42Greenhorn Crosby is there and able to wrestle the pot to the deck.
10:48But down below, staggering in from the deck, Lenny is injured.
10:55Oh, the pot wasn't picked up high enough.
10:58It's holding the corner of it and the boat swung in the power block.
11:02Smash bike slammed right into the corner of the pot where my hand was.
11:06It's got my left finger in it.
11:10Oh.
11:11Meat.
11:12Do you want to sit down?
11:13You seem a little shaky.
11:14Well, it's because of the paint.
11:16No, I know, I know.
11:17I know what I'm saying.
11:18Do you want to sit down?
11:19Meat sticking out.
11:20Yeah.
11:21211 miles from Dutch Harbor, fishing on the wizard has come to a grinding halt.
11:28Deckhand Lenny has retreated with a crushed finger.
11:34Oh.
11:36Oh, that kind of hurts.
11:41Damn it.
11:44Did somebody snitch?
11:45It's going to need it or I'll lose the tip.
11:47How are you doing?
11:48The tip is turning all purple, blue.
11:51How deep is it?
11:52That will flip over if I wanted to.
11:55Let's not flip it over, okay?
11:56Yeah.
11:57This is way beyond my knowledge to try and stitch something up so we're not going to go there.
12:01Hundreds of miles for medical help, Keith assesses the situation.
12:05Let's butterfly it up but, you know, I think I got to get you in because if I don't, you are going to lose the end of that thing.
12:12Yeah.
12:13They have to put a little bit of pressure on that to push it back the other way, okay Lenny?
12:16Yes.
12:17Nobody's ever lost any body parts on this boat, Lenny, and you're not going to be the first, okay?
12:21Okay.
12:22Okay.
12:24Okay.
12:25Feel it still throbbing?
12:26Yeah.
12:27That's a good thing.
12:28That means that the blood's still pumping into that tip.
12:31Just bummed out.
12:32Didn't want this.
12:33Nobody wants this.
12:34Keith feels Lenny's finger will be lost if he doesn't get professional attention.
12:41Immediately, he heads for the clinic in Dutch.
12:44In the wheelhouse, Keith and his brother Monty discuss the impact of Lenny's finger.
12:49We're supposed to be out here to catch over 200,000 pounds now.
12:52We're going in with 120, so now we got to find a way to get back out here and put about 280,000 pounds on this boat in about 10 days.
13:00And I, to be honest, I've never done that.
13:03I mean, we've had some serious fishing before, but to do it after the fleet's already mopped up all the gravy in the first week is going to be a tall order.
13:11For Lenny, keeping his job is more important than keeping his finger.
13:16I don't want to lose my spot for the season or anything.
13:19Just manage it up and hope he lets me come back.
13:22Keep going.
13:3050 miles to the northeast of the Wizard is the Time Bandit.
13:35The fishing could not be worse.
13:38We're going to have a peso, I'll score here, right here.
13:43It's a hot spot last year.
13:45In the same area that pulled up gold last year, Jonathan is halfway through a string of painfully empty prospect pots.
13:52Oh, damn it!
13:54Feels pretty sad.
13:55Oh!
14:00Nice cockfish.
14:01Not out here to get speed.
14:11Come on.
14:12Oh!
14:13Can I get my first one?
14:16Sounds like a ball now.
14:26We're out in the land of snails and halibut.
14:29This is not too good.
14:31Lots of snails on the bottom though.
14:37Ow!
14:38Must be a hole in the pot somewhere.
14:40We're not on any crab here, so it's time for us to move and get the heck out of here.
14:45It's hard to keep the crew's spirit up when the fishing is so bad.
14:48This is not good!
14:50Whether it has a hundred or if it has zero in it, we still have to pull it.
14:54So we just shut down.
14:55We just go into auto mode.
14:57Let's roll.
15:10Oh, he hit this bunny bone.
15:12Bunny bone.
15:14Woo!
15:15Stand back!
15:16Damn it!
15:17Oh, he got it in the elbow.
15:19Woo!
15:20It's your funny bone and it's not funny.
15:24Why do they call it a funny bone?
15:27I thought I was going to pass out there for a second.
15:32On the Time Bandit, if you're not bleeding or dead, it's funny.
15:37Cut it off!
15:39Cut it off!
15:40Cut it off!
15:41Cut it off!
15:43In between pots, Andy does a patch job on Russell's elbow.
15:47Russell's got himself taped up with this much foam on his elbow.
15:51But he's ready to roll.
15:53Work through your injuries.
15:54I put on my sport elbow.
15:57I'm going to go with it the rest of the season.
15:59It feels pretty good actually.
16:01With Russell at half speed, Captain Jonathan is forced to put Nate, a rookie, in the boat's danger zone, working the rail.
16:07The kid's going to have to fuck up.
16:10Ready to step up, Nate?
16:12Yeah, baby.
16:16So far so good.
16:22Oh, easy.
16:24Get your legs out of the rope there.
16:26Blind.
16:27Make sure you keep your legs clear.
16:29It's supposed to shuffle.
16:30Shuffle your feet.
16:31Always shuffle.
16:32Your feet come off the ground, you're airborne.
16:36It doesn't take long for Nate to put himself in a life or death situation.
16:45If the pod had gotten loose, he'd be dragged to the bottom.
16:51I think it happens so quick out here.
16:53It just happens like that.
16:54Everything's going great.
16:56If the time bandits Greenhorn doesn't step up, he may lose his job or his life.
17:0284 miles to the southeast, Greenhorn skipper Blake Painter's willingness to listen to the old guard has kept him on the crab.
17:11The maverick is returning to the crab grounds from the successful offload in St. Paul.
17:16He's averaged 70 crab per pot.
17:19An impressive number.
17:20He wants to keep up.
17:21Try to find something.
17:22I'm not going to set these pods in a desert.
17:24There's got to be something worth putting them on that.
17:26Yeah.
17:27Worth throwing them off the boat.
17:28There's no point in wasting the bait.
17:31Blake decides if his method of fishing isn't broke, don't fix it.
17:38He gets back on the radio to find the crab.
17:41What do you know about this?
17:42Is there anything else down here to look at?
17:45Phil's been pulling big pots, but he's feeling generous.
17:48He shares the location of a nearby honey hole with the rookie skipper.
17:51For right now, they want to be east of the 05.
17:55How far up can I go?
17:56Do you know?
17:57We'll run up above the 15 line, go out like the 05 and set to east.
18:02Make a couple of strings stretched out as quickly as you can.
18:07There's crabs above there.
18:11All right, man.
18:12Well, I appreciate all that info, Phil.
18:14I'm going to head up that way here.
18:17Man, here's another little tidbit.
18:19Whatever I tell you, you don't repeat to other people.
18:22I don't want to hear it from Jonathan or...
18:24Corky or any other...
18:25Corky or any other...
18:26Corky or any other...
18:27Corky or any other...
18:28Corky or any other...
18:29I'm telling you right now, or I'll never tell you another thing, Corky.
18:32Yeah, well, that's a given, I would think.
18:34That's a given, I would think.
18:35That's when you and me, that's when you and me, that's fine.
18:39Oh, Phil's got a little hotspot here.
18:42He's just keying us in on it.
18:43He just wants to make sure that nobody else is working it.
18:47But he gave it to us, so we're going to go set some through there and see what we can come up with.
18:53Hours later, as dawn breaks, Blake thinks twice about keeping Phil's hotspot confidential.
18:59Corky, Corky, Corky.
19:04What are you doing?
19:06If he wants to keep receiving information from the other skippers, he's going to have to start giving information.
19:11I don't know if I got a little bit of info, but nothing big.
19:14I heard mixed things about decent numbers there, just kind of west of the bottom end of the goose.
19:19Above the sombrero and west, kind of just west of the sombrero, sounds like pretty good numbers.
19:26Little does Blake know, Phil is tuned in.
19:34Who are you talking to?
19:36Who gives you a description?
19:38Phil.
19:41Right on.
19:42Blake's an arrogant little .
19:45I mean, they don't come any more arrogant than him.
19:49282 miles away from Dutch Harbor, the Maverick is arriving in St. Paul Harbor.
19:54We're just coming into St. Paul.
19:56Try to get us offloaded as quick as possible.
19:59We've got 18,000 pounds.
20:02Shouldn't take them but a couple hours.
20:04Hopefully we'll be out here by noon.
20:09Too late to remedy, the deckhands are left to worry the crab count is off after the processor crew takes over.
20:15You know, we all got to pay for a ticket if we get one.
20:18Mikey's a little stressed out.
20:19I'm a little stressed out too, but it's all on us basically.
20:24It's all going to come out of our pocket.
20:26It's all going to come down to me because I'm the one that did the counting.
20:30As the crab is placed in the braillers, deckhand Ed takes note of the weight.
20:45My first brailler weight was 1775.
20:48Okay.
20:59With the last brailler filled and weighed, the crew's concern for their count is the only thing on spot.
21:05While upstairs in the processing office, Blake sets to finalize his books so the boat can get paid.
21:11All this paperwork for a little bit of crab.
21:23What's our total crab?
21:2516,125.
21:28Okay.
21:29Well, thank you again.
21:31Have a good day.
21:32You too.
21:33Have a good travel.
21:34Alright.
21:35Scott checks on the final crab count.
21:37He's short a couple hundred pounds.
21:40About 200 bucks a piece.
21:43Um, so, it's better that than, uh, 2,000.
21:48We're about 600 pounds short.
21:54Uh, we'd like to have been up over 600 pounds, but the crab would probably light a little bit more than we thought they were.
22:01It's alright.
22:02Just one less pair of shoes for Christmas.
22:04221 miles to the north-northeast of Dutch Harbor.
22:10Captain Phil on the Cornelia Marie is still stewing over his hot spot being leaked by Captain Blake of the Maverick.
22:18But with 130,000 pounds on board and pulling an average of 50 crab per pot, Captain Phil is getting everything he wants but revenge.
22:32Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
22:34Oh, yeah!
22:35Woo!
22:36Woo!
22:37Woo!
22:38Yeah!
22:39Woo!
22:40I feel like a criminal!
22:41Money!
22:42A lot of big crab in here.
22:44I see all these crabs, you know, and I get so excited.
22:47My mind goes up into a far off place.
22:49Yeah.
22:50Start dreaming.
22:51My dreams often involve a warm beach, some Filipino women.
23:01While Jake dreams of the beach, Phil finds what he's looking for.
23:05Oh, well, by God, there's a Maverick pot.
23:08I might just have to have a little fun with Blake, fix his little .
23:13Hey, Dave.
23:14There's a Maverick pot sitting here.
23:16So we're going to haul this last one.
23:19We're going to go fiddle with Blake a little bit.
23:26There isn't any shortage of arrogance with Blake.
23:29And I suppose that's part of the motive, just to make sure that we can top him and put him in his place.
23:40Get the crab.
23:42If you're going to do something, you might as well do it all the way.
23:47Hey, there's an ice-keeper.
23:48Thanks, Blake.
23:49Thanks, Blake.
23:50Couple?
23:51Huh?
23:52Come on.
23:53We're in the one door shut on this thing.
23:56I want to do a good one, too.
23:57I don't want to do this half a .
24:06Monster garage-style stuff right here.
24:08Yeah!
24:09Yeah!
24:10He's changing the bridle, so it's going to come up weird.
24:12Well, first, they're going to pull up.
24:13They're going to be like, what the heck's going on?
24:15After that, they're going to go to pull open the door, not realize what's going on.
24:19They're going to think something's stuck, something's hung up at some point or another.
24:24Hopefully, it's about 3 o'clock in the morning.
24:26Everybody's tired and wet.
24:28This one here will be time-consuming.
24:30That's what makes it amusing, is we're going to see how sharp his boys are.
24:35Okay, let's get this thing back over.
24:38She's a beaut!
24:41Oh, boy.
24:42Oh, boy.
24:43Well, they ought to get a big charge out of that, I would think.
24:55There goes a great big pain in the .
24:5775 miles to the southeast, the far west leader is fishing, but hardly catching anything.
25:19Come on, man.
25:21I knew it.
25:22It's a bust.
25:23I wish I would have never set these here.
25:29Pots we've been picking up.
25:35Dusting at them.
25:36Two or three crab.
25:37Whenever you get pots like that, man's no crab around.
25:41Man's just time to stack them on and put them someplace else.
25:45Yesterday, Captain Greg was on the crab, and Rognild was on deck sorting.
25:52But today, with few crab in the pots, Rognild is in the wheelhouse, keeping score.
25:59These empty pots means that he hasn't made any money.
26:03Go to sleep or something.
26:05He should be listening to me.
26:07When I tell him he shouldn't sit here, he shouldn't do it.
26:10Whatever you say, dear.
26:12You're killing me.
26:15When I told him yesterday he should go further the road, he didn't listen.
26:20And now I'm telling him again.
26:22You're killing me.
26:23You're killing me.
26:24That's the thing in Norwegian.
26:26You can always tell a Norwegian.
26:27You just can't tell them much.
26:32Greg decides to make Rognild put her money where her mouth is.
26:36Well, you're going to set these pots, Rognild.
26:39I'm going to clear all the marks off this screen, and we'll see where you're going to go.
26:44You're going to go to a place where things are happening.
26:47And what place would that be?
26:48That would be when boats are around a little bit.
26:51In pushing to set further north, it becomes apparent Norwegian minds think alike.
26:57Yeah, that's Sig, all right.
27:02Mr. Northwestern.
27:03He's right out your window.
27:05He's got a full load of gear on.
27:07There he is, Northwestern.
27:08He's set.
27:09You see, that's why he's popular, because he knows where he's going.
27:14Yeah, okay, Rognild.
27:15Don't make his head swell any bigger in a pot.
27:19Rognild's betting that the crab are moving north.
27:22I just want to tell them what bear to fish, and he can go over him.
27:27I'm going to shut you up.
27:29I'll set it wherever you want.
27:30Okay.
27:37Crabs move in massive clusters up to four miles a day.
27:40The key to catching them is to anticipate which way they're going, and set your pots ahead
27:45of them a few degrees off, and your pots land in barren ground.
27:49I'm definitely telling them where it's at.
27:52We don't need none of that going on in the wheelhouse.
28:00I'm telling the guys, if the pot's empty, it's your fault.
28:03We'll just wait and see.
28:06205 miles to the northeast of Dutch Arbor, the Maverick crew has been grinding for 30 hours.
28:12It's 5.30 in the morning.
28:15Just hauling the last couple pots of our second string.
28:20I think the guys are getting a little tired.
28:22Not as many woo-hoos and high fives outside as there was earlier.
28:26It's 6 a.m. as the weary Maverick crew pulls in pot number 45706, the one sabotaged by Captain Phil.
28:39Somebody play this, Blake.
28:41They put the bridle on the door.
28:44Oh, really?
28:45Somebody tied our bridle on the door side of the pot.
28:48It's supposed to be on the back side.
28:50Oh, yeah.
28:51We'll be alone, but we'll just put the crane on and spin around.
28:54Somebody ran this pot, and they tied our bridle on the door side, so we hauled up the pots backwards.
29:01That's like the oldest trick in the book.
29:03If you're gonna mess with somebody's pots, at least make it original.
29:06And that doesn't even warrant retribution.
29:15The door's welded shut!
29:17Oh, you gotta be kidding me.
29:21They welded the door, too.
29:23Somebody welded our door shut, too.
29:25Used to add about 20 minutes onto our string.
29:28Apparently, the dork that flipped our bridle on the opposite side of the pot also welded the door shut.
29:37Again, old trick, nothing new.
29:40You'd think they could have thought of something better than that.
29:43Something a little more original.
29:45Yeah, that would have been nice.
29:47What do you think put them up to?
29:49Seen a kind of a calling card on it?
29:51We tried to Ornelia marine bait job, fam, with no chew sack left.
29:55It's got the two majoros put together.
29:58Roger!
29:59Okay.
30:00And with that, you might end up burning the mesh off of it.
30:04You sure you wouldn't rather use a saw saw or something, Barb?
30:08Quick to solve the crime, the crew sets to spring their crab.
30:12There we go.
30:13I think that pot was spilled because these guys patented two main jars off of one hook.
30:33All right.
30:34If he wants to play that game, he'll get it too.
30:3678 miles to the north of the Maverick is the Northwestern.
30:52After striking out on his Western string, Captain Sig is on the move.
30:56We just ran about 40 miles, 30, 40 miles back east where our first load of gear was.
31:04That first load did quite well, so we're in that area to see if we can't find something
31:09more out this way.
31:11Captain Sig is gambling all 300 pots far to the northeast of last year's hotspot.
31:26Oh, yeah.
31:27This is dandy.
31:28The crew works all night, sending 150 pots to the bottom.
31:42Oh, my God.
31:45Dawn brings a sign that their fortune may turn.
31:48I guess I got good luck for a while.
31:51Just got pooped down by a seagull.
31:53Yeah, that's great.
31:56That is foul.
31:59Wash their eyes.
32:00Oh, great.
32:03That's fine.
32:04They say the bird's on me.
32:06That's definitely bad luck.
32:08So far, strategy alone hasn't worked for Captain Sig.
32:14He's open to all suggestions.
32:16Maybe we'll have the guys stand on the bow and get hit by all the seagulls.
32:21A little luck never hurt anybody.
32:2431 miles east aboard the Time Bandit, Greenhorn Nate is still struggling at the rail.
32:31Just let her back out or it'll pull itself.
32:37You got it.
32:38Captain Jonathan has a plan to initiate the rookie with some Hillstrand-style hazing.
32:43The first pile we dump is going to have Russell's and John's new flower bomb.
32:50The Hillstrand family recipe for flower bombs is simple.
32:54One 30-gallon trash bag, five pounds of flower, tie off and attach to the line.
33:00Let the games begin.
33:17208 miles northeast of Dutch Arbor, Captain Greg of the Far West Leader is approaching the most anticipated strings of the season.
33:22The strings set by his wife, Rognild.
33:31Rognild's string will be the next one, so we'll see what happens there.
33:36Whether I'm going to never hear the end of it or not will tell in this pot.
33:41It's healthy, isn't it?
33:43I wouldn't go that far, Rognild.
33:45You've been pretty lucky so far.
33:47Look at the husband you landed.
33:56Oh, Rognild's picked.
33:58We got a new captain.
33:59Captain Rog.
34:00Nice call.
34:02I bet that's 30 to 40 anyway.
34:05In 38 hours.
34:07Well, boys, this is the string Rognild told me where to set, so I guess we'll never hear the end of it.
34:12No, I think it was pure luck.
34:15That's all it is.
34:17Norwegians, you know, conquer the world before everybody else.
34:21The fish, the power of the sea.
34:24Sounds like she's got natural crab sense.
34:28Trying to find the crab.
34:31We can call it the Rogo string.
34:34Roggy string.
34:35Ha-ha.
34:36Ha-ha.
34:37It works.
34:38Crab in the pot.
34:40She made a good pick there, this brown.
34:44Women's intuition or beginner's luck.
34:46Either way, she found the crab.
34:49I'm going to be sorting here shortly.
34:51That's what you said shortly ago.
34:53I'm just making sure that I don't come out there and the next pot is up.
34:58Bye.
34:59Bye.
35:00As dawn breaks and the sea subsides, Rognild braves the deck to see more pots coming up.
35:08Pots, pots, pots, pots.
35:10Yeah.
35:11Please, now she'll be happy.
35:14She'll be in a good mood today, so she'll make a good dinner.
35:17Oh, wow.
35:18That's a good one, too.
35:19A good fight.
35:20Well, you take three pots like this, that makes up for a whole string of in three pots.
35:37That's how quick it adds up.
35:39That pot had 103.
35:50And this one's got more.
35:52Crab all over that pot.
35:57Big pot.
36:02123 to grab that last pot.
36:05This is getting really good fishing right now.
36:09That string Rognild's set made almost $29,000 for that 26 pot string.
36:17Over $1,000 a pot she had.
36:20But I'm not going to tell her that.
36:24And then she'll want it in cash.
36:29Rognild's hot spot paid off.
36:31And now the guys have a surprise for her.
36:33Okay, Rognild, here's your moment of glory.
36:36Help her out, Chico.
36:38Whoa, you got a pink hug?
36:41Yep.
36:42It's just for you.
36:43Who type it is?
36:44Rognild, sidearm would be better.
36:46Don't play it like a baseball.
36:48Oh, she was staying on the line.
36:52Try again.
36:53All right.
36:54Try again, Chico.
36:55Go ahead, Rognild, throw.
36:58Yeah, I'm telling you, it must have been the pink hook.
37:10The pink lady hits it.
37:12I can't believe I made it.
37:14I think it might have a pad on the shoulder.
37:2245 miles to the northwest, the Time Bandit is hauling gear,
37:26and they're just one pot away from springing their flower bomb
37:29on greenhorn Nate.
37:30Skipper Jonathan feels if they can't catch crab,
37:33at least they can catch some laughs.
37:35Today, we're going to be bowling the flower pot.
37:39There we are.
37:40All right, here's the end pot.
37:45As Nate steps forward, everyone else steps back.
37:49I thought they'd get wet.
37:50Are we ready?
37:51I'm ready.
37:52Okay, here we go.
37:53Here we go.
37:54Go, go, go, go.
37:55Hey.
37:56Oh, yeah.
37:57You got it.
37:58I'm ready.
37:59I'm ready.
38:00I'm ready.
38:01I'm ready.
38:02There we go.
38:04I'm ready.
38:05Okay, here we go.
38:06Here we go.
38:07Go, go, go, go.
38:08Here we go.
38:09Here we go.
38:10Go, go, go, go.
38:16Oh, yeah.
38:18oh
38:44it works good
38:48i can't wait to see the replay
38:52man i looked over right and looked right when it exploded right in my face
38:58there was just an explosion of light and a garbage bag tied to the line
39:02that was a good one
39:04i love you man
39:06that was funny stuff we enjoyed that
39:12and of course being the new guy nate has to clean up the mess
39:26he did good though when you see him grab that buoys it came right in board
39:30we were counting on that because we needed the speed when the flower come through
39:34he's got it down now
39:36i like that guy
39:38good kid
39:40good kid
39:54after steaming 200 miles at a cost of ten thousand dollars in time fuel and crab lost
40:00it arrives in dutch harbor on their mission to get lenny to medical attention
40:06despite his injury lenny still helps tie up the boat
40:10lenny doesn't feel pain look at it i mean his fingers are virtually scar on scar
40:16i'm not sure we'll see what they say at the clinic but
40:20i still say put a band-aid on and go to work
40:26all right let's get her patched up
40:32that looks kind of wicked
40:34don't cheat
40:36all right you got these touches to kind of tack it down
40:38we definitely made the right call bringing the boat in
40:40yeah definitely because he would have lost that fingertip
40:42lenny's finger and his season are in jeopardy
40:46but captain keith will let the doctor make the call
40:48don't worry about the status after we get the finger patched up
40:52you know when he stays on the beach he stays on the beach
40:54probably always have some residual numbness
40:56to this area of the finger
40:58it's going to go forward
41:00sorry
41:02if it were farther up where the nerve is
41:04that would cause you more of a problem walk
41:06if you do it right
41:10you'll be able to straighten it out all the way
41:12and bend it
41:14the swelling that you have that's from the injection
41:16you did a good job shorter but
41:18i think it'll still work
41:20so tell me where we're at here on uh
41:22his stems
41:24he can go back on the boat if he wants to
41:26got to keep it out of any contaminated water
41:28that sounds like he's good to go
41:30see you on there
41:32Lenny's cleared for duty
41:34but captain keith is not about to let him fish
41:36he'll be confined to the galley
41:38until his finger heals
41:40keep it dry and clean
41:42the two things you don't do on a crab boat are dry and clean
41:44i mean it's uh dirty and wet
41:46so i mean that's that's
41:48the biggest goal is keeping Lenny's finger the way it's supposed to be
41:52do what little odds and ends he has me do
41:54until he says i can go out
41:56i think it's going to be hard to keep him off deck
41:58and he's already chomping at the bit to get back out there
42:00he's not uh
42:02he's not uh he's not the kind of guy
42:04that wants to sit in the house and watch guys
42:06fish
42:08187 miles east northeast
42:10of dutch harbor captain phil's
42:12making an emergency stop in king cove
42:14something's wrong with one of his
42:16propellers also known as a wheel
42:18last night he's just shaking the whole back
42:20of the boat apart
42:22so we're gonna get some divers down here
42:26i'm so pissed off
42:28every hour
42:30in port is costing this boat money
42:34local diver joe morris expects to find line caught in the prop a pretty easy fix
42:42the good is when there's absolutely nothing in there
42:46it's happened uh two out of my last three dives
42:48guy was mistaken well something broke
42:50from it would be the worst case for him
42:52but i think you'd hear more clinking
42:54right probably be up sooner than we think
42:56well i hope the wheels aren't bent or something weird
43:00there's no line in the wheel
43:12it's much worse
43:14a piece of the propeller is broken off
43:16how is it
43:30there isn't
43:32there isn't
43:38this is bad
43:40phil's hopes for a quick fix are gone
43:42now he just hopes he can save his season
43:58hey this is phil harris and i'm about ready to have a heart attack i have the coronaria marie
