00:00The vast Bering Sea, over a million square miles of the world's most violent and unpredictable
00:12waters, and home of the deadliest catch, Alaskan crab.
00:19It's January and the hunt for Opelio crab is on.
00:27Diehard crews are facing down bigger waves, more boat crippling ice, and deadly steel, to
00:42cash in on the $59 million at stake.
00:50So far, this Opelio season has been nothing but pain.
00:55A fire on board the processor has forced many crews to stop fishing, and the Coast Guard
01:03has already been called upon to make a daring night rescue.
01:08Now, tempers flare, the worst waves in years, and mechanical failures threaten entire seasons,
01:28as the hunt continues for the deadliest catch.
01:32Orange gold!
01:35Orange gold!
01:56Woo!
02:02Yeah!
02:21This January, the Opelio crab fishing season
02:24has gotten off to a rocky start.
02:26The 316-foot floating processor, the Stellar Sea,
02:30is being towed into Dutch Arbor.
02:32She suffered a fire that has put her out of commission.
02:34What we know that actually happened
02:36was that the governor got too hot and it exploded
02:39and it started a fire.
02:41Many of the fleet have contracts
02:42to offload only at the Stellar Sea.
02:47Now, there's no place to offload their crab
02:49and no reason to continue fishing.
02:54You gotta have somewhere to take it.
02:56325 miles to the northwest of Dutch Arbor
03:00is the Time Bandit.
03:01Despite no place to offload their Opelio crab,
03:04they're going fishing anyway.
03:05Stellar Sea caught on fire and that was the boat
03:10they were using for all the northern deliveries for Opelio.
03:13We decided to come out with plan B to do bear dye
03:15and it maybe hit the mother load.
03:18Maybe not.
03:19We'll find out.
03:21It's all good.
03:22We're fishing.
03:24The Time Bandit is fishing bear dye crab,
03:26a close cousin to the Opelio.
03:29But bear dye are more elusive and less lucrative.
03:33I wish the Stellar Sea wouldn't have burned up.
03:35We'd be Opie fishing right now.
03:36We wouldn't be messing around with this ghost bear dye.
03:40Jonathan is at the wheel allowing Captain Andy to rest
03:55before a major storm arrives.
03:57We're just trying to get as many of these together
04:10as we can before the storm hits us.
04:13Over the last 10 years,
04:15bear dye were protected and off limits to fishing.
04:18Now, bear dye can be fished again.
04:21To find the bear dye, Captain Andy sets a prospect string,
04:24one test pot every mile for 80 miles.
04:27If they find full pots, that's where they'll fish.
04:40The first prospect pot swings over the rail.
04:43Lookin' like a lot of small crab.
04:55Basically, nothing's good if we're rear over.
04:59None of that.
05:00Okay.
05:01Funny that, you come over here,
05:03you just like to fill up, Stan.
05:05You never know, we got gear set up for 80 miles,
05:07so there's still a chance to find some.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Yeah, there's another one.
05:12Couldn't fit a hair between them.
05:13Something's better.
05:14We're catching five, 600 crab a pot,
05:16but we're only keeping 15 of them.
05:17You know, so you've got to keep your eye out for them,
05:19because it's illegal to have the little crab
05:20and use the fish tank.
05:21So far, the catch on deck is poor.
05:24Up in the wheelhouse, Jonathan fills Captain Andy in
05:27on the upcoming storm.
05:28South East 60 with gusts of 70.
05:30Woo-hoo!
05:3135-foot seats.
05:32Perfect.
05:33It's not lookin' good.
05:34Okay.
05:34222 miles to the north-northwest of Dutch Harbour,
05:37the catch on deck is poor.
05:40Up in the wheelhouse, Jonathan fills Captain Andy
05:43in on the upcoming storm.
05:46South East 60 with gusts of 70.
05:48Woo-hoo!
05:4935-foot seats.
05:50Perfect.
05:51Okay.
05:52It's not lookin' good.
05:53It's not lookin' good.
05:54Oh, my.
06:01222 miles to the north-northwest of Dutch Harbour,
06:04at the port of St. George Island, is the far west leader.
06:07Captain Greg Moncrief is in a hurry to load on 30 pots
06:11and get back out to sea.
06:15Saturday night.
06:16South East wind.
06:1745 knots.
06:18Seas 20 feet.
06:20Rain is snow.
06:23A massive storm is bearing down on the island,
06:26and Greg wants to get out of the harbor before it hits.
06:29Well, I don't want to be stuck in here overnight
06:32with the southwest,
06:33because once the swell starts wrapping around,
06:35it can just beat us,
06:36and we can't do anything about it.
06:38Just gotta sit there and take it.
06:40So I'll just soon get out of here.
06:44If it starts blowing the wrong way too hard,
06:49you can't get out through the dogleg out from the harbor.
06:52The channel, in the shape of a question mark,
06:55protects the harbor from storm-generated swells,
06:58but it's tricky to navigate, even in calm weather.
07:01With the wind and waves already building from the oncoming front,
07:04getting the 105-foot far west leader back out to sea
07:08will be like threading a needle.
07:10I'm not nervous.
07:11The worst thing you can do is go on the rocks.
07:14His pots are loaded, but Greg may have waited too long to leave.
07:19Pots are on.
07:20Now I need to just move over to the other side and drive.
07:23See if we can get out of here with this wind.
07:25Wow.
07:26That's a nice, that's massive swell.
07:28Holy .
07:32Well.
07:33Maybe we shouldn't go, Greg.
07:34I can't do anything, Rogno.
07:35Don't tell me what to do.
07:37Captain Greg must navigate the snaking channel with only a few feet to spare
07:40on either side of the boat.
07:51There is no room for a long distance.
07:53The danger is like a slur or a slur.
07:54I need to be careful, but I can't do anything, Rogno.
07:57It's just a big deal.
07:58I can't do anything, Rogno.
07:59Don't tell me what to do.
08:00Captain Greg must navigate the snaking channel with only a few feet
08:05to spare on either side of the boat.
08:07There is no room for error.
08:21The slightest drift, and the boat will be tossed onto the rocks.
08:29Hold on, boys.
08:37I don't know why I wouldn't have come in in this.
08:53Finally, after 30 harrowing minutes, Captain Bragg guides the far west leader back into open water.
09:03This is bad.
09:04This is what the ass is what it's all about.
09:07No, this is very bad.
09:09This is good.
09:10I want to go back on land.
09:12Oh, my God, Greg.
09:14Leaving St. George behind, the only damage done is to Rognil's nerves.
09:20Oh, Rognil got her panties in a bunch.
09:27Is that her?
09:28Yeah.
09:29Come here, Rognil.
09:30Come here, Rognil, you sniveler.
09:33What?
09:34Anyone do that?
09:35Typical woman in the passenger side.
09:37Yeah.
09:38No, I just didn't think it looked very safe.
09:40Well, we don't want your opinion.
09:42Well, I won't say my opinion anymore.
09:44I just suffer quietly.
09:45That's good.
09:46That's fine.
09:47If I want it, I'll ask for it.
09:49I'll rattle your chase.
09:50I just won't even look out of the windows anymore, because I can't handle it.
09:56Let's go fishing.
09:57Ain't no money in the harbor.
09:59325 miles to the northwest of Dutch Harbor is the Time Bandit.
10:08Captain Andy Hillstrand and his crew continue to sort through miserable pots of bear-dike crab.
10:14Big one.
10:15Get it on the boat.
10:16Now an impending storm is bearing down, and it's a race to haul as many pots as possible before it becomes unfishable.
10:28So far now on this big 80-pot string, we pulled about, well, we have about 20 pots pulled.
10:34The weather's just coming up, something fierce.
10:37They say storm warrantings all around the hole, and it was low.
10:47Right now we're in the trough of 20-footers, it's just wrong with us to make it happen.
10:52We've got to pick these things up.
10:54It's really just too dangerous to do it.
10:56We might have to jog into the weather.
11:00Someone gets killed.
11:02The safest way for a boat to fish is to head into the direction of the breaking waves, allowing the bow to absorb the brunt of the impact.
11:13However, a combination of string placement, tides, and weather can force a boat to work in the trough or the ditch.
11:21Fishing in a ditch means the boat is heading on a course that exposes the broad side of the vessel to the crashing waves.
11:27The weather is deteriorating.
11:36It's like being in a washing machine on a full cycle.
11:40It's going to blow like hell.
11:42It's got 70 knots, I guess.
11:45They're updating it.
11:46It's coming up so fast, it was too low.
11:48The weather guy's having a hard time keeping us updated.
11:50Yeah, man!
11:51Let's get an onical click out here.
11:52Separate the men from the boys real fast.
11:53Oh, but there comes a smoke.
11:54Ooh, baby.
11:55Look at that one little buck.
11:56Be careful.
11:57Big waves.
11:58Really big waves.
11:59And it's going to get worse.
12:00The seas are now reaching 30 feet, and they're fishing in the trough.
12:02These are the types of scenarios that cause even the most die-hard captains to make top of the boat.
12:07And it's going to get worse.
12:08The seas are now reaching 30 feet, and they're fishing in the trough.
12:26These are the types of scenarios that cause even the most die-hard captains to make tough decisions.
12:33What do you say, Russell?
12:34He said that we've got to clean this pot up, and we've got to get off the deck so he doesn't kill us.
12:49Let's go!
12:51Big waves.
12:55Could see some of the deadliest waves we've seen for a long time.
13:02With so many small crab being tossed back, and so few keepers, the risk now outweighs the reward.
13:09Captain Andy, 14-1-4!
13:12Roger, 14.
13:14You guys good?
13:15Come on in.
13:16The weather is really getting poor out here.
13:19He's got to be particular how he runs the boat, especially when we're out here,
13:24because if we could take one wave, he'd kill us all.
13:27Good work, guys.
13:28Always good work in this weather.
13:31Make sure you shut off the board hydros.
13:33The men take shelter, and with the crew off the deck, Captain Andy can focus all his efforts on keeping the time bandit on a safe course.
13:43Now watch it growl.
13:46Do you see a big wave coming?
13:48Throttle down.
13:49Get ready to punch it.
13:50There's a freight train coming.
13:52Throttle up.
13:53Throttle down.
13:54Throttle down.
13:55Let's get a nautical.
13:56We know this is coming.
13:57We're going, we're traveling right with the low, so we're staying right with it, so now the wind's going to catch us.
14:11As soon as we start around here, it's going to be all its glory, 70 knots.
14:16That's what I think.
14:17We got big boys coming.
14:20It doesn't take long before Captain Andy gets confirmation that he made the right call.
14:25That's big, my friend.
14:28Welcome to the Bering Sea.
14:31Oh, my God.
14:32Oh, that's bad.
14:33Oh, that's bad.
14:34It's bad.
14:35It's bad.
14:36It's bad.
14:37It's bad.
14:38It's bad.
14:39It's bad.
14:40It's bad.
14:41It's bad.
14:42It's bad.
14:43It's bad.
14:44It's bad.
14:45Oh.
14:46That's not good.
14:47That's not good.
14:57Boiler down.
14:58We just had a road wave coming to the side.
15:00We just lost, took a big wave, just took our king coiler out.
15:03That's what will kill your engine, too.
15:06But it's either hanging on its hooves or its hooves are ripped off.
15:09Oh, that was four foot of water that went across the whole deck.
15:13Wow.
15:14That would have taken everybody out.
15:16I got cranked down wind.
15:19A 30-foot mountain of water has sheared the bolts from the base of the 200-pound coiler
15:25and torn it right off the deck.
15:27That would have taken everybody out.
15:29I don't know what they want.
15:31Yeah, these are steaks, dude.
15:33Oh, yeah.
15:34Yeah, now how big is that now?
15:36How big is that now?
15:37Captain Andy turns the boat out of the trough so that the men can quickly resecure the coiler,
15:43then get back inside.
15:44Every moment they spend on deck increases the risk of catastrophe.
15:58Move.
15:59Uh-oh.
16:00Watch out.
16:01Watch out.
16:02Watch out.
16:03Watch out.
16:09Finally, the men are able to bolt the coiler back down to the deck.
16:13So if I'm going to put it in the trough, is that coiler going to be okay?
16:17Okay, let's go.
16:22Andy gets his crew back inside to safety.
16:25After a brutal day of pulling low numbers in high seas, a rogue wave and a broken coiler, Captain Andy now faces a long night.
16:37It's getting dark.
16:38It's getting scary out.
16:39Battling the Bering Sea just to keep the time band afloat.
16:4337 miles to the south, the Cornelia Marie is returning to a string of 177 prospect pots.
17:07Greenhorn Josh Harris is looking forward to his first Opelio season.
17:12You know, everybody's really excited.
17:13I'm excited.
17:14Learned a lot.
17:15A little nervous to begin with.
17:16Still am.
17:17But things are working out pretty good.
17:19The guys are cool.
17:20So I'm really excited to get the season going.
17:23First spot of Opi's coming up right now.
17:26Hopefully there's some crab in it.
17:27Woo!
17:28Oh, baby.
17:29Damn.
17:30This one's got a little crab in it.
17:31Wow.
17:32There's a dip.
17:33Are they all a crab, Mike?
17:34Why not?
17:35We might get 400 out of that one.
17:36Woo-hoo!
17:40The crew's excitement has quickly dampened when they realize that most of these crab are throwaways.
18:02Yeah, there's a lot of junk.
18:04They're full of stuff that's got to go right back over the side.
18:09Wake up.
18:10Watch that pot.
18:11That last one had about, that first pot had about 270, 280 in it.
18:21I'm not all impressed.
18:24There's a tremendous amount of sub-legal crab.
18:28Jake, get your skates up there pushing crab down.
18:31Don't fall in the water, please.
18:32Just want to keep you on the boat.
18:34But not only is the crab small, it's the wrong kind.
18:39Great big pile of stuff.
18:40Yeah, just in case you didn't know, there's six different species of crab.
18:46Which one are we looking for, Dave?
18:48Well, we're taking a look at everything today.
18:52The crab are looking like a lot of sort and slows the whole process down, man.
19:09With pots full of juvies, females, and bear dye, the deck is slow to a crawl, hauling an average of eight pots an hour.
19:18Half the normal speed.
19:21Although each pot is averaging 700 crab, 400 of them are rejects and must be dumped back into the sea.
19:34A painful sight for a captain.
19:41After four hours of sorting through worthless crab, only 31 pots have been pulled.
19:48The crew will have to haul 146 more before they'll get a chance to rest.
19:57251 miles to the northwest of Dutch Harbor is the far west leader.
20:01The storm is still east of them, but bearing down rapidly.
20:05Like the Time Bandit, they're fishing for bear dye crab.
20:08And it's going just as poorly.
20:11Take a while to catch a quarter of these kind of numbers.
20:13I've been getting 12, 15.
20:16Bear dye, I like that.
20:18They'll be just barely under or way under.
20:23The job of sorting is difficult.
20:26To get a handful of crab into the tank, they have to toss hundreds of undersized and females over the side.
20:33Use both hands and both feet.
20:36Up in the wheelhouse, the news is no better.
20:39Storm warning tonight.
20:4175 knots.
20:42Behind south 55 knots tonight.
20:45Well, it's going to blow, boys.
20:53Well, it's supposed to come to east 50 tonight.
20:57So bundle up.
20:59Wind off the east comes off the landmass.
21:02That's what you'll call it.
21:03No.
21:04I'm not worried about it.
21:05It's going to be working in it.
21:09For a veteran, nasty weather is just part of the job.
21:13For Ragnild, it's something to fear.
21:17I don't like it there, but it's blowing.
21:20I think my boat could happen.
21:23Like what?
21:25Why?
21:26I don't know.
21:30Like the boat could take over or something.
21:32I don't know.
21:33She's just worried.
21:35She doesn't like bad weather.
21:37You know, her uncle, Fission, rolled his boat over and half the crew died.
21:42So I think that still lingers, and he's never been the same since.
21:49You know, so I think that still lingers in the back of her mind.
21:55It's going to be all right.
21:57Here I go.
21:58Why didn't you come in?
22:05God, what a pain in my backside.
22:09Oh, I think Ragnild, she's getting real worried about the weather coming up.
22:18She's a little upset, so.
22:21She's inside.
22:23Great center inside for a little bit.
22:25I'm worried about the weather.
22:26I'm worried about the weather.
22:27Can I go inside?
22:30Here, Ragnild.
22:32Cheer up.
22:33Are you really that worried about the weather?
22:36Tell me the truth.
22:38Don't lie to me.
22:39Why?
22:40You don't think this boat goes through 50 mile an hour winds?
22:43We do it pretty much every season.
22:46I would do nothing to jeopardize you or the crew or the boat.
22:51Well, don't worry about that.
22:5590 miles to the northwest is the Northwestern.
23:01Captain Sig is looking to rebound from this season's rough start by pulling good pots before the storm hits.
23:11When we started, you know, we had some bad luck floating around and pointing the finger maybe at the kid a little bit, but someone's going to get the blame for the bad juju.
23:20Their bad luck began when sea lions destroyed their buoys.
23:25Look, there's teeth marks right there.
23:27You know, we've lost a lot of bags that we need to replace, and we've probably lost over $10,000 just in pots.
23:35Sig has been fortunate in one way.
23:38The processor he contracted with in Dutch is fully operational and ready for Opelio grab.
23:44About ready?
23:47First pot coming up here.
23:50First pot coming up here.
23:53And...
23:55Swing in a minute.
24:00The weather came up between this string and the last one, that's for sure.
24:07It's getting a little gusty out here.
24:10Come on!
24:15Yeah!
24:18I heard it, yeah!
24:23As they swing their first pot of board, they feel their luck may be turning for the better.
24:28That's crazy!
24:29Holy cow!
24:31Come on!
24:35Hey!
24:38Yeah!
24:43Of course, that's just the first pot.
24:47Let's see how the rest of them do.
24:56Yeah, baby!
24:57Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
24:59Yeah!
25:00The next pot is even more loaded down with Opi's than the first.
25:04You know, I thought that we were gonna be plagued by bad luck from the get-go.
25:16So, things have definitely turned around.
25:19I feel like we're back on track and the way we're supposed to be.
25:24But just as things seem to be looking up...
25:28Hey, Edgar, she's not staying in gear, man.
25:33I mean, she's, like, barely, barely doing it.
25:42It's, like, 3.30 now.
25:43She's not doing it.
25:44She's not holding.
25:45I mean, the engine's, like, grunting.
25:48Sig is pushing the throttle full forward, but the boat is hardly accelerating.
25:52Edgar, the boat's engineer, spots another symptom.
25:57Flat.
26:01She's running really ratty.
26:06It could be pneumatics.
26:07It could be filters.
26:08But one thing is for sure.
26:10This is no place to be without the full strength of the 1,300 horsepower main engine.
26:16Look for the most obvious thing first.
26:22Let's shut the panel off!
26:27Shut the whole panel off?
26:28Shut the panel off!
26:33Sig orders a complete shutdown while the entire crew searches for the problem.
26:39For once, on the Northwestern, fishing is the last thing on their minds.
26:44It's one thing we've got to check and get out of the way,
26:47because something's wrong between there and here.
26:52Sounds like it's between the Pollitt House and here.
26:5650-mile-per-hour gusts are already reaching the Northwestern.
26:59The swells will be next.
27:01Without enough power to navigate through the waves,
27:03the boat will be almost helpless in the coming storm.
27:06It needs to be able to keep the boat up against the weather,
27:08and if you can't jam on the throttle and spin the boat to keep it up against it,
27:13then we're left in the trough, and you don't want to be in the trough.
27:21There.
27:22Hold on.
27:24That's engaged?
27:25That's engaged?
27:26It should be forward.
27:28Huh?
27:30It's right here, Edgar.
27:32It's right in that diaphragm.
27:33It's right in that boot.
27:34Where at?
27:35Right here.
27:36It's that diaphragm.
27:37It's the one that engages that lever.
27:42They find an air leak.
27:51This could mean that the problem is the pneumatic, or air-powered throttle, and not the engine itself.
27:57Okay, well, fire it up.
27:59They fire the generator back up, so Edgar will have light as he attempts to repair the ruptured hose.
28:17Fire it up.
28:18Fire it up.
28:25Sig presses the throttle to see if it's working at full power.
28:32It takes a while to get up to past 13.
28:35I'm almost pegged now.
28:41I am pegged now.
28:43Yeah, it should be more 50.
28:45Yeah, there's still something.
28:47Fixing the air leak didn't solve the problem.
28:53I don't want to go fishing if the engine's not 100%.
28:55I don't think that'd be a wise choice.
28:57I don't know if it's going to get worse.
29:00Especially when you consider you're in the Pribloff Islands in the middle of winter.
29:05Yeah, let's get out of here.
29:06Let's go in.
29:08You know we're going to kick ourselves.
29:09You know you're going to kick yourself.
29:10Yeah, Roger.
29:12Sig sets course for St. Paul Island to get out of the weather, and to get the Northwestern back at full steam.
29:18But it's another setback, and more time lost fishing.
29:21Even if we just run in, and it's a screw loose, it's a day in, a day there, a day back out.
29:30It's three days shot.
29:31Three days, I don't make no money.
29:33For something that could be very small, you never know.
29:36But that's the thing, you just don't know.
29:38Why lay five guys' slides on the line for something you just don't know.
29:43With the start we've had, the pots we've lost already, you know, I don't want to go from bad to worse.
29:49We do have 50 knot winds in our forecast.
29:54Nobody likes to go out there without being 100% sure of what they have.
30:00And right now I'm not.
30:06292 miles to the northwest of Dutch Harbor is the Cornelia Marie.
30:11Captain Phil received word that the Stellar Sea is repaired and will be ready to process crab in a couple of days.
30:18Well, now we're back in business, and we've got a place to take 175,000 pounds.
30:27The Cornelia Marie is on the crab, and on deck, Greenhorn Josh is getting his first look at huge pots of Opelio.
30:34They've done anything quite like this before, so I'm just kind of rolling with the flow.
30:41A lot more sorting involved, and I don't really know much about the different species of crabs out there, or what exactly we're looking for.
30:46It's a lot different than king crab, so it's very frustrating sometimes.
30:49Very frustrating sometimes.
30:54Come on, Josh.
30:56Come on, Josh.
30:58Come on, Josh.
30:59Let's go there, buddy.
31:00Get them all out of there by now.
31:01All right.
31:05For a beginner, it's really confusing.
31:07You're looking at a couple thousand crab.
31:08You've got to pick the right one.
31:11Education will be crucial for Josh to ever move past his bait boy position, but the Cornelia Marie is grinding at full speed to make up for lost time, and patience is at an all-time low.
31:25Stand there some more, Josh.
31:27Kill some time.
31:29Might as well shove your thumb up your door while you're at it.
31:32Kid's been standing there for one minute. He could have got a bait can filled in that time.
31:42Am I okay to bait it?
31:44Yep.
31:45Okay.
31:49You're wasting time, Josh.
31:52Fire that when we go in if he keeps his up.
31:57Need a severe glove change. Hands are soaked.
32:00While steaming to the next pot, Phil calls the forepeak with some skipperly advice for Josh.
32:07Hey, bud.
32:09I know you're trying to help, but it ain't helping.
32:11This is what I want.
32:12I want the bait done.
32:13Then you can go up there and help them push it down.
32:16But don't stand there and do one crab over, hand them one crab.
32:20Okay, well, this is, did they tell me to get up on there?
32:23I know, I know, but listen, hear me out.
32:25What did everybody says?
32:26Push the crab down when it needs to and get your bait done.
32:29Okay, did you not notice, like, two minutes before you told me that, I already did that and they were already full.
32:34I've been kneeing the crab all the way down whenever they asked me to.
32:37Yes.
32:38Just don't stand at the end of the launcher and do one crab at a time.
32:43Okay.
32:44All right.
32:47Josh has yet to learn that there is only one boss on a crab boat, the captain.
32:52Oh, he just doesn't know what goes on on deck all the time.
32:55But he thinks he does.
32:56That happens.
32:58Even if he is your dad.
32:59Take care of your bait.
33:00Well, I got more than that bait cans.
33:02Well, sure you do.
33:03You tell me that about the 180th pot.
33:07You think you're going to die, you piece of .
33:11Tell me how to fish your .
33:13And then the going to tell me how to do it?
33:16He's out of his damn mind.
33:19The kid knows how to push my buttons, I swear to .
33:22Joshua is new to crabbing on this boat.
33:29He's new to crabbing on any boat.
33:32And all of a sudden, he has the idea that he knows more about it than I do.
33:36You know, I asked him nicely not to push crabs around and do something else.
33:42And he started telling me how life was going to be.
33:45And I just freaked out on him.
33:46I mean, the kid's got about as much experience in crabbing as he does being President of the United States.
33:53I'm trying to teach the kid the right way.
33:54But when he thinks he knows more than me, I take that just a wee bit personal.
34:03So I felt like grabbing a club and walking down there and knocking him out.
34:06But that will come next.
34:12Josh, come here.
34:16Don't talk.
34:19It's my turn.
34:22I know what's right and wrong down there, Josh.
34:24Okay.
34:25I've been doing it for 30 years.
34:27That's right.
34:28When I see you doing something that ain't right, I'm going to say something.
34:31Okay.
34:32So you will do it right.
34:33But what you got to understand is that...
34:35Hey, understand this.
34:37On here, right now, you're that low below whale .
34:41Yeah, okay.
34:42Well, then understand this.
34:43Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
34:45Who asked you to talk?
34:47Well, do you want to know why I'm doing what I'm doing?
34:50I mean, seriously.
34:51Get with the program here.
34:52Shush.
34:54Don't even say a damn word.
34:56Oh, the skipper of the boat.
34:58Oh, okay.
34:59I'll reply okay to everything you say.
35:01My job is to make this boat run as smooth and make as much money as we can.
35:07The reason this boat's in the top 10 or 15 in the fleet through the years is because we have a certain way.
35:14When you deviate from that, you us up.
35:18Do you understand?
35:20Please understand.
35:22Yes, sir.
35:25That's a good answer.
35:2657 miles to the northeast of the Cornelia Marie is the wizard.
35:36Oh, yeah.
35:51After pulling disappointing pots from one of last year's hotspots, Captain Keith has decided to stack his gear and head for more fertile fishing grounds.
36:01Once again, trying to raise the weather, you know, is why we put this gear on here.
36:08We didn't want to be spread out 25, 30 miles so that we could try and finish this trip up with all our gear in one little spot.
36:16I mean, what we're trying to do now is we're trying to get all our gear on good fishing.
36:19We're trying to fill the boat and then leave the gear on really good fishing.
36:22Okay, guys, don't lose track of the fact that it's pretty out here too, Mouse, okay?
36:34So everything we do has to be done with a little bit of a sense of urgency, all right?
36:39I'm blindsided on this part side, guys.
36:41I don't see them until the last second, so I don't know how big they're going to be.
36:45With winds hitting 50 miles an hour, Keith's visibility is down to a minimum.
36:49Heads up, guys. Everybody hang on, hang on, hang on.
36:58I hope you got a camera going, Christian, because this might get ugly real quick.
37:04Yeah, we got it, Mouse, we got to find a way to secure it now, okay?
37:08Let's go.
37:12Captain Keith instructs his brother, Monte, a.k.a. Mouse, to lock down the crane.
37:18The forward crane is up, and the forward crane is basically our life on this boat.
37:23Trying to hook the hook, Mouse.
37:25You can hook the hook with the throwing hook real quick, all right?
37:34A wave taken over the bow has sheared the transmission gears inside the eight-ton crane.
37:39If not secured, it can swing wildly and present a deadly hazard.
37:44Watch your heads up there on the starboard side.
37:46We got some waves coming through here as well.
37:52The crew races to secure it as the boat violently pitches and rolls.
37:57They broke the transmission in the crane, the forward crane, which is what we use for taking our paws out of the water.
38:04As soon as everything's secure, have everybody come in, get a cup of coffee and Lenny, give me a status report on the crane.
38:12The crane is secure, but there is still more work to be done.
38:15As soon as we get out there, first thing we're going to do is we're going to move that sorting table back into the corner.
38:20Get it secure, make sure it can't move permanent, all right?
38:25That's not going to be any fun.
38:28We should probably get these codpods off, get the hoppers out of the way, get the tanks capped off,
38:35and then we'll just hand push those things to the rack one at a time.
38:38Boom, boom, boom, and set them off.
38:41With high seas, everything on deck must be securely in its place before more harm is done.
38:47First, the sorting table.
38:49Then the pots.
38:52Heads up on the port side, guys.
38:55And with five codpods on deck and no crane, the crew must shove the 800-pound pots to the rail.
39:03Everything hard, when you're ready, let it roll.
39:06Launching them before the boat heads in for repair.
39:09Can't really fish without that forward crane, so I'm calling it a trip as far as I know.
39:15It's too bad.
39:16Without the forward crane, fishing on the wizard comes to a halt.
39:21Captain Keith is left with no option.
39:23He must secure the deck, battle the heavy seas, and head for port.
39:27The wizard is out in front with a full load of Opelio crab, while the Time Bandit and Far West leader are still making ends meet with small catches of Beard Eye crab.
39:41325 miles to the northwest of Dutch Harbor is the Time Bandit.
39:49They're still searching for full pots of Beard Eye crab from their prospect string.
39:53But Captain Andy is going to try a new strategy.
39:57We're trying to set all of our gear right into the weather for the storm.
40:01And then hopefully, that will set the pots and tunnels right on the bank where the crab just go.
40:07With the storm, with the currents underneath there, they just push right up to your pot and they go, oh.
40:12We'll get in there for dinner time.
40:13On deck, the crew readies to drop the first of 20 pots.
40:20So you know what your job is on this, Richard?
40:24What?
40:26The buoy thrower.
40:28It's a hard job, but...
40:30Here's the buoy guy.
40:32Throw your own shots.
40:34That's the rule.
40:36That is the rule.
40:37You coil that crap, you throw it.
40:39You know what my job is on this.
40:43As the rest of the crew steps up, Russell steps down to bait boy.
40:48We think we might have found a little vein of crap to set these pots on.
40:52You know, we'll probably set six or seven in a mile this time.
40:56We were setting them every mile last time.
41:06Let's go!
41:09All over!
41:31The Time Bandit crew made quick work with the first 19 pots.
41:35But then...
41:37Watch out, watch out!
41:40Richard is caught in the line.
41:41Oh, my God!
41:42Ah!
41:47Oh, my God!
41:54In a matter of seconds, Richard could have been dragged overboard.
42:00Oh, my God!
42:01We got real serious there real fast.
42:03How many guys are wearing knives right now?
42:07So you guys would have cut Richard out of that, right?
42:09Did I see some knives in the hands already?
42:11All right.
42:13Yeah, I was getting ready to throw the buoys.
42:14It happened really fast.
42:15I'm not exactly sure.
42:16There was waves crashing over the boat in between throwing the shots.
42:17It went around my leg.
42:18And all I could think to do was to slap it.
42:20And when I slapped it, it went flying up in the air.
42:22It went around my other leg twice.
42:23And Shea was trying to help me.
42:24And just thank God I got it out from around my leg and almost went over the rail and down
42:30the side of the boat.
42:31Got away with one on that deal.
42:49Today, one crewman's life was spared, and the time bandit got lucky.
42:53Only one crewman's life was spared, and the time bandit got lucky.
42:59And for now, the weather has subsided.
43:05Across the fleet, captains and crews take stock and prepare for the unknown.
43:12Man, it just absolutely splintered this thing right now.
43:17Come sit with your angels.
43:21But everyone has survived, and the grind continues.
43:25Give us some time
43:31Forgive us this fragile
43:35Flaming mind
43:39It's alright
43:42Hey
43:46It's gonna come down
43:48It's gonna come down
43:51It's gonna come down
43:57Change
44:00It's gonna come around
44:03It's gonna come around
44:05Well, given these moments
44:10Well, given these moments
44:14Well, given this time
44:19Time
44:20Yeah
44:22Yeah
44:23Yeah
44:24No
44:25Movement
44:26Before
44:27To be honest
44:28Yeah
44:31It's gonna come down
44:32Now
44:33ождved
44:34New
44:36To fuck
44:39We Huh
44:46We Are
44:48We Are
44:53You
