00:00Hello, I'm Michael Crossland, business reporter with the Yorkshire Post, here with some interesting
00:06news this morning in that a site in Leeds, which was once home to the city's biggest
00:11employer, has now been earmarked for a new housing development. House builder Avant Homes
00:17has submitted plans to transform the site of the former Burton's clothing factory into
00:23a new housing community which will feature 302 homes. The proposed plan features a mix
00:31of apartments alongside semi-detached and terraced houses. You can see here a picture from Avant
00:37Homes which was sent to us, which shows what the development could look like.
00:42The plan also features a proposal for public green space, which would be located on the
00:47site of the factory's original Bowling Green and Gardens. The development is set to be
00:53in Montague Place, after Sir Montague Burton, who founded the factory in 1921. Located
01:00in Bermontoft, the Burton's factory was the city's largest employer at the height of its
01:05production and employed around 10,500 people, producing around 30,000 suits per week for
01:13the Burton tailoring chain, which then later became Burton Group. Avant Homes has said that
01:19to reflect the former site, it has developed a heritage strategy which will see a number
01:24of features retained, including art deco motifs and the iconic Burton signage. The company has
01:31also said that materials used on the proposed properties will be selected to reflect those
01:36which are currently seen at the site. That's all for the time being. I'm Michael Crossland reporting
01:42for the Yorkshire Post.
