00:00Glove stocks rose on Bursa Malaysia yesterday amidst a sea of red in global stock markets, bludgeoned by Trump's reciprocal tariffs.
00:10However, the shining star among the glove counters was Supermax Corporation Berhard, which surged as much as 11.6%, emerging as the top gainer among glove stocks and the third most actively traded stock with 81 million shares.
00:24Meanwhile, top glove corporation Berhard, the world's largest natural rubber glove producer, and Hartalega Holdings Berhard both rose as much as 5%, while Kosan Rubber Industries Berhard jumped to 8.1%.
00:37The sell-down was in the wake of US President Donald Trump's punishing reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries, including Malaysia, taking effect yesterday.
00:46This included the eye-watering 125% duty on Chinese goods after the US responded to counter-tariffs from Beijing, escalating a global trade war.
00:56However, Supermax, the smallest among the top four Malaysian glove makers by market capitalization, has a huge advantage over its peers, as it is the only one with a glove manufacturing facility in the US.
01:07This means that gloves made by its wholly owned US subsidiary, Maxxer Healthcare Inc., will not be slapped with any tariff, unlike other Malaysian glove makers, which will be hit with a 24% import duty.
01:20More crucially, Supermax's main competitors, China-based glove makers, will likely be crushed by the 125% duty imposed by the Trump administration.
01:29Yesterday, China hit back at Trump's tariff policies by hiking tariffs on all US imports by 50% effective today.
