00:00Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia will send its officials to the U.S. to discuss

00:06the 24 percent tariff recently imposed on Malaysian imports.

00:10He said Malaysia's trade with the U.S. had long been a model of mutual gain, with its

00:15exports supporting Malaysia's growth and high-quality jobs across the U.S.

00:20He also said that while the Malaysia-U.S. trade relationship had served both countries

00:25well, the tariff might have a negative impact on both economies.

00:29As part of our soft diplomacy of quiet engagement, and I build this consensus among ASEAN leaders,

00:36we will be dispatching, together with our colleagues in ASEAN, our officials to Washington

00:41to begin the process of dialogue.

00:44Yesterday, Reuters reported that White House economic adviser Stephen Moran encouraged

00:48countries hoping to escape high U.S. tariff rates to make offers to Trump, saying the

00:53president would welcome moves to lower barriers to U.S. exports.

00:58On April 2, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a series of new tariffs that directly increased

01:03import duties on several of Washington's Southeast Asian trading partners.

01:08The hardest hit were Cambodia, with a basic tariff of 49 percent, followed by Laos at

01:1248 percent, Vietnam at 46 percent, and Myanmar at 44 percent.
