00:00Chinese companies are considering the possibility of avoiding U.S. tariffs
00:06if they move manufacturing operations to Malaysia.
00:10Chinese-based tech firms are hoping that Malaysian officials can persuade Washington
00:15to forego the tariffs because the products will be assembled in the country,
00:19the Financial Times reported.
00:22However, a Malaysian government official told the newspaper that it was impossible for them
00:27to guarantee these Chinese firms that they would be able to do so.
00:31Meanwhile, Johor executive counselor Li Tinghan told FT that he had received a similar request
00:38from the head of a Chinese medical devices company.
00:42Li said he turned down the company's request,
00:45but his answer might change when the U.S. change its policies.
00:49China is facing the prospect of a new raft of tariffs imposed by the Joe Biden administration,
00:55which would particularly impact its electric vehicle exports to the U.S.
