00:00Lawyers are urging the Judiciary and the Attorney General's Chambers to work together to address
00:06the mounting backlog of criminal cases involving serious offenses.
00:12They say it is unjust to hold accused persons to remain in remand while awaiting the commencement
00:16of their trials.
00:18The lawyers also recommend that more judges be appointed and called for the prosecutors
00:22to scrutinize the evidence before framing charges to ensure they are able to secure
00:27convictions.
00:29Prosecutor Salim Bashir suggested that judges currently assigned to the civil courts be
00:33also roped in to preside over criminal trials.
00:37Meanwhile, Counsel S. Paul Krishnarajah said prosecutors must prefer lesser charges that
00:42carry lower jail terms if the investigation papers reveal that there is insufficient evidence
00:48to justify a more serious offense.
00:51He said such a move would also reduce the need for the AGC to deal with representations
00:55seeking a reduction in the charges brought, another reason that contributes to delays.
01:01He was responding to recent complaints from criminal law practitioners about significant
01:05delays in their clients' trials, particularly in cases involving murder and trafficking
01:10charges.
